StevenPayne UnitTwoSpace TheCabinetofDr.Caligari (1920) Dir.RobertWeine TheCabinetofDr.Caligari iswidelyconsidered“the firsttruehorrorfilm”(Ebert,2009)andisamassively influentialpieceofclassiccinema,presentingfuture filmmakerswithnow-iconicelements,suchasthe‘twist ending’.FilmcriticColeSmitheyaddressesthis,saying, “Thefilm's ripplesof influencecanbe foundinavantg arde,  filmnoir, horror,and thrillersrang ingfromcri meto  psychologicalsuspense.” (Smithey,2011) The film a ppears t o hop fromone genre to a noth er, startingoffwithatoneofsuspenseandmystery,likethatofa psychologicalthriller(followingtheideaofCesarehavingthe abilitytopredictone’sdeath),movingontosomewhatofa slashermovie,withserialmurderbeingrifethroughoutthe slightlydisjointedvillageofHolstenwallbytheendofthefilm. Ofcourse,beingthepredecessortothetypicaltropesof thesegenres,thefilmdoesnotfeeloverlycomplexor strangelyridiculous.Itfeelsasifthismergedcombinationof unusualsituationsisperfectlynormal,whereasnowadays, thismash-upofgenreswouldbeputdowntoa misunderstandingofbasicfilmmaking. The film i s a visual delight, set wi thin a war ped world oftwistedstreets,loomingstaircasesdrapedaround distortedbuildingsandhillsidesthatlookasiftheycouldbefoundwithinthepagesofa pop-upbook.Themesmerizing,somewhatunsettlingsettingdepictsthethemesofinsanity anddelusioneffectively,constantlyresettingideaswithinthemindsoftheaudiencewith eachnewscene. “Slatheringthesc reenwithforc edperspectives andallkinds ofbizarre diagonalsand slants;thereis hardlyaright angletobefound inthisfilm. Itresults invivid, dreamlike logicandater rifyinglack ofcontrol .” (Anderson,2008) The sets are primarily two-dimensional , much like that of a the atre producti on, but atnopointdothesefacadesfeelobviousandunreal.Theseamlessintegrationofthe sceneryandtheplotmaketheentirefilmutterlyimmersive.ThecharacterofCesarethe Somnambulisthashadanobviousinfluenceonvariouscharactersthroughoutcinema. TheCabinetofDr.Caligari iswidelyconsidered“the

influentialpieceofclassiccinema,presentingfuture

filmmakerswithnow-iconicelements,suchasthe‘twistending’.FilmcriticColeSmitheyaddressesthis,saying,

Thefilmappearstohopfromonegenretoanother,

startingoffwithatoneofsuspenseandmystery,likethatofa

psychologicalthriller(followingtheideaofCesarehavingthe

abilitytopredictone’sdeath),movingontosomewhatofa

slashermovie,withserialmurderbeingrifethroughouttheslightlydisjointedvillageofHolstenwallbytheendofthefilm.

Ofcourse,beingthepredecessortothetypicaltropesof

thesegenres,thefilmdoesnotfeeloverlycomplexor

strangelyridiculous.Itfeelsasifthismergedcombinationof

unusualsituationsisperfectlynormal,whereasnowadays,

thismash-upofgenreswouldbeputdowntoa

misunderstandingofbasicfilmmaking.

Thefilmisavisualdelight,setwithinawarpedworld

oftwistedstreets,loomingstaircasesdrapedaround

distortedbuildingsandhillsidesthatlookasiftheycouldbefoundwithinthepagesofa

pop-upbook.Themesmerizing,somewhatunsettlingsettingdepictsthethemesofinsanityanddelusioneffectively,constantlyresettingideaswithinthemindsoftheaudiencewith

eachnewscene.

“Slatheringthescreenwithforcedperspectivesandallkindsofbizarrediagonalsand

slants;thereishardlyarightangletobefoundinthisfilm.Itresultsinvivid,dreamlike

logicandaterrifyinglackofcontrol.”(Anderson,2008)

Thesetsareprimarilytwo-dimensional,muchlikethatofatheatreproduction,but

atnopointdothesefacadesfeelobviousandunreal.Theseamlessintegrationofthe

sceneryandtheplotmaketheentirefilmutterlyimmersive.ThecharacterofCesarethe

Somnambulisthashadanobviousinfluenceonvariouscharactersthroughoutcinema.

SimilaritiescanbefoundincharacterssuchasNosferatuandmorerecently,Edward

Scissorhands.

Theunbelievablyflamboyantmelodramaputforwardbythecastissomewhatsuppressed

bytheaskewnatureofthesetdesign,makingtheover-the-topperformancesappearperfectlyrationalinavillagethatisanythingbut.

Therearevariousstorytellingtechniquesfoundwithinthefilmthatarenow

consideredsomewhatcompulsoryintheaveragefilm.Thefirstofthesetechniquesisthe

flashback.Flashbacksareusedwhenthefilmmakerwishestoportraytheconclusionofthe

plotinitially,beforetheaudienceisclearonwhyithasoccurred.Thisplaysonthe

audience’ssenseofcuriosity,leavingthemdesperatetoknowwhathappenedandensuring

thattheyareconstantlyengagedwiththeplotofthefilm.Anotherstorytellingtechnique

displayedisthetwistending.Twistendingsareusedtoapplyashockfactortotheplot,

typicallyinthefinale.Theplotisplayedoutandtowardstheendofthefilm,theresultthe

audiencewasexpectingisswitchedoutforsomethingentirelyspontaneousand

unexpected.ThistechniqueisusedliberallybydirectorssuchasM.NightShyamalanandcanbefoundinfilmssuchasTheSixthSense,Se7en,FightClub andTheEmpireStrikesBack .

TheworldinwhichTheCabinetofDr.Caligari issetperfectlyreflectsthedislocated

toneofdissolutionpresentedbytheplot,makingitexceedinglyclearwhythefilmhashad

suchanimpactonthehistoryofcinema.
