Did someone say peer advocacy? My
name is James Burney. People call me
Mr. Burney. I am a member of Our
Voice and a peer advocate. I like be-
ing a peer advocate because I feel en-
couraged and a sense of self-worth
when helping others to voice their
wants and wishes. Sometimes I know
it might be hard to talk to others about
problems you have but you are not
alone. When faced with a problem you
can’t fix its okay to reach out for help.
Sometimes you might have a problem
at your place of employment, services
you are receiving etc. Peer advocates
are available to help. A peer advocates
can arrange a meeting to see how we
can help you come up with solutions
to your problem. Please feel free to
contact me at Jamesbur-
[email protected] if you have any
questions or if you would like to talk.

The Magical Forest By Josh Turner
A long time ago there was an
ancient mystical forest where magical
creatures lived in harmony with other
creatures that live in the same environ-
ment with the magical creatures. The
magical creatures are multiplying by
the numbers. The magical creatures
were still multiplying by the thou-
sands. The magical creatures finally
stopped multiplying. All together now
there are five thousand six hundred
twenty-nine magical creatures now
living in the magical forest.
Conflict Resolution Tip of the Quarter: NEVER jump to conclusions or make
assumptions about what another is
feeling or thinking.
Listen without interrupting; ask for
feedback if needed to assure a clear
understanding of the issue.
As a self advocate you may want to know about the new
rule about the changes in standards of community services and
supports, they also effect employment options too. These new reg-
ulations issued in January of 2014 may effect you or a friend.
Medicaid money is sometimes used to support a person with
a disability to live in a setting that is not in their community. In
these situations, the person can be isolated and has no choices
about their daily routine. The new rules will help protect people
with disabilities right to live in their community with correct sup-
ports.
This is an exciting new change for Virginia. But some peo-
ple are scared it won’t work. Change can be scary, but it can also be good. Everybody, people
with disabilities and without can look out for one another to keep everybody safe. In my opinion
I think this is a good change, and I hope you feel the same.
The new rules might sound complicated if you go to The Centers for Medicare & Medi-
caid Services. I found a great site that explains them in simpler terms at HCBS Advocacy (Home

A Great Time at Wanna B’s Karaoke! By Kevin Latham
Hi, my name is Kevin Latham and I would like to
share with you my experiences of going to karaoke. Every
Saturday I attend Wanna B’s Karaoke Club. It is an awe-
some place to hang out with friends, eat good food, and
have a great time! It opens at 7 pm and I usually arrive just
as they are opening their doors. All of the waitresses greet
me at the door and know my name. It is an awesome feel-
ing! Every Saturday at 8 o’clock sharp, the DJ draws the 8
o’clock Bonus Round. This is a chance where you are able
to sing an extra song if your name is selected. Last week,
my name was chosen! It made me feel great! I decided to
sing Toby Keith’s “Country Comes to Town”. I love sing-
ing country music; it is my favorite! When I was selected
for the 8 o’clock bonus round, I chose from their props to
wear a cowboy hat. I just want to encourage you to come to
Wanna B’s. It is a great place to have fun on the weekends!

This is What I Think…
By Blake Thomas
Hi! My name is Blake Thomas and playing video games is what I
do. The game I have been playing is Xtreme Legends dynasty Warriors. I
play this game on my PlayStation 3. I purchased this game on my last
game day at GameStop.
I give this game 2 thumbs up. My favorite character is Lu Bu be-
cause he is huge and a bit scary. He has a deep commanding voice that
scares the bad guys. I laugh when he calls them “pathetic little maggots”
because the bad guys run for cover. He wears a cool warrior’s armor and
he carries a long axe that helps him in battle. Sometimes Lu Bu even bat-
tles while riding on his red horse. I also like when his team mates battle alongside him. Their
names are Dong Zhuo and Huang Gao. They fight all of the bad guys. The cool things about the
bad guys is that they wear different color clothes for each new level and tournament.
Although this game does not have any blood some people may not want to play this game
because of the violent battles. This game is rated T for teen and it’s a lot of fun to play!
Diabetes Tip of the Quarter: Modest weight loss of 5-10% of body weight
can decrease or delay the onset of diabetes.

I , Victoria Akers, went on Saturday the seven tenth to sell art at Stockley Gardens and I
got a picture taken with my first five dollars. It was fun sitting out there and I ate lo mein and
funnel cake for lunch but didn't want a drink because it will make me go to the bathroom during
my sell. I sold my ten dollar Clifford picture art and sold all about except three. I didn't want to
leave Stockley Gardens that day because I was still selling more pictures before I left. I told Ma-
ria I enjoyed myself that day and told her I want to go there Sunday evening. I couldn't go back
because the staff I had was busy that day. So what she told me that she
knows someone in her family that does art and I’m going to sell the
rest of my art to that person. When I came home we counted the mon-
ey and I made thirty-six dollars. My start dollar my driver gave me
from my drawing and it makes thirty-seven and when I get three five
dollar bills I will have fifteen dollar bills and I will have fifty-two dol-
lars added up. The End!
P.S. It was a great experience!

What is Rock?
By Justin Brown
In this world of mixed up values, where anything goes,
excess for many while others are jobless and homeless
and hungry, even our music has become a little less de-
fined…. Its confusing.
Rock is put with country… they call this Rock-a-billy.
Rap is put with Rock… they call this Rap-Rock. Metal
with Rap is Rap or Death Metal. Punk with Rock is
Punk Rock. Then there is Techno, Hip-Hop, Glam,
Death Metal, Hard Core, Thrash, Classical, Grunge and
Classical Rock.
Even the radio stations find it difficult to untangle the web of genres into some musical order. My-
self being a hardcore classic rock fan, have found my roots deep in the 60’s music with greats like
James Brown, Jimmy Hendrix, Rolling Stones, Yard Birds and The Who. On to the 70’s and early
80’s where Bon Jovi, Poison, Motley Crue and many others that led to the 90’s Grunge starring
Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Sound Garden and Alice and Chains, which all come together to what we now
k now as Rap Metal. In this Rocker’s humble opinion music should come from the heart. It has to
be felt deep in your soul with meaningful lyrics that are not mumbled. And rhythm that make your
feet want to get up and dance!
Diabetes Tip of the Quarter:
The 1st Annual VA Drum Show By Justin Brown
On Saturday, September 13, 2014 at the Meredith Center for the
Arts, was a banging time for anyone that loves percussion. From 10am to
6pm, drums and drummers of all kinds were on stage performing, lecturing
and available to directly speak with you. This was advertised by Veer, and
all the music stores. Some of the drum experts there that day included Jae-
Sinnet, Jazz Drum Master, John Lindberg, Timpani Master, Arthur Lopaz,
who held a drum circle for all that wanted to participate with drums for all, Bianca Hicks, hand
drum master. Then the special guest was Carmine Appice, a very famous percussionist who has
played with Jimi Hendrix, Ozzy, Santana and Rod Stewart, just to name a few. It was a great
day, filled with music, raffles and friends.
I cant wait for next year! SAFE Tip of the Quarter: Respect everyone's right to make his/her own
personal decisions - including yourself!

Holiday Safety Tips for Hosting & Food Safety
THE BUZZ Page 8
When preparing a holiday meal for friends and family be sure to wash hands, utensils, sink, and anything else that has come in contact with raw poultry. Keep in mind that a stuffed bird takes longer to cook. Never defrost food at room temperature. Thaw it in the refrigerator, in cold water or in the microwave. Use a clean food thermometer to cook foods to a safe internal tempera-ture before serving.
Avoid cleaning kitchen surfaces with wet dishcloths or sponges. They easily harbor bacteria and promote bacteria growth. Use clean paper towels instead. When reheating leftovers, bring the temperature up to at least 165°F to eliminate any bacterial growth. Refrigerate or freeze leftovers in covered shallow containers (less than two inches deep) within two hours after cooking. Date the leftovers for future use. Being a smart party host or guest should include being sensible about alcoholic drinks. More than half of all traffic fatalities are alcohol-related. Use designated drivers, people who do not drink, to drive other guests home after a holiday party.
