VA-12-95 Experimenting with Acrylics - 6 weeksSheila Macdonald RobertsSaturdays, November 3rd - December 8th10:30am-1:30pm$135 members / $150 non-members

Those who have taken Sheila’s previous courses might like to try some newand and experimental approaches to painting with acrylic. New techniques and fun tricks working with gels, glitz and textures, along with gloriously wildand fun applications will be explored in this class. This course is meant forstudents with a background in acrylic painting.

Participants of all skill levels will have the opportunity to draw from a differentlive nude model every week, while gaining an intuitive understanding of thehuman form. From quick gestures (30 s. to 5 min.) to more complex, extensiveposes (15 to 40 mins.) hone your craft - at your own pace - in this friendly andinformative studio environment. Must be at least 18, or with consent from theinstructoinstructor.

Students will learn to express themselves in both realistic and abstract styles in the colourful and vibrant medium of chalk pastelin the colourful and vibrant medium of chalk pastel. This class is intendedfor the beginner in this medium; the fundamental techniques will be the focusfor this course, with additional introduction in composition and colour theory.You will develop and perfect your technique by creating an abstract design aswell as a landscape in consultation with the instructor.

Come out and explore this glorious medium and learn the secrets to workingwith colouwith colour, shape and design. Students will be guided through demonstrationsof technique and colour mixing, and then put them into practice. This programis an introduction to the world of watercolours, but is suitable for all levels.

Professional artist Albert Casson has taught all ages how to draw for over20 years. Learn the differences between drawing and sketching; shading, contour, gesture and the basics of perspective. Everyone can learn how todraw, and Albert is the one to show you! With individual attention and a relaxed studio atmosphere, bring out your drawing talent and confidence.

Safety in the Studio

Anyone registering for a printmaking course must attend a Studio Safetysession previous to the start date of the course. Studio Safety will includeWHMIS procedures, how to use the press, and how to properly clean up inks and tools. The sessions are free, but please register.

A comprehensive workshop designed to get to the essentials of capturing a likeness of the model on canvas, board and paper. Students will be lookingat a at a variety of formal problems such as the initial blocking in of the figure,modelling the form through colour and reconciling the figure and the back-ground. Learning to see the figure in terms of mass and volume as opposed to line will be emphasized. Previous experience in figure drawing is recommended.

Experiment and play your way to beautiful, original and expressive abstractpaintings. Experience various approaches to abstraction. Find your personalartistic signature. Learn to trust your own creative instincts. Absorb the guidelines for colour use, concept, composition and design as you tease the boundaries of your imagination. Play with some new acrylic products and pushtheir boundaries along with yours. The art classroom becomes your safe place to to fearlessly experiment with the guidance of your instructor. Learn aboutcurrent magazines, DVDs, art shows and additional resources.

VA-12-103 Lino PrintmakingAmanda CaldwellSaturdays, November 17th and 24th, 2:00pm-4:00pm$85 members / $100 non-members + $20 supply fee

This four hour workshop will teach students how to create a one-colour linoleum print editionlinoleum print edition. Artist Amanda Caldwell will guide students through the process of designing an image, carving a lino block, and printing youredition using a press. Basic techniques will be learned, as well as tips and tricks. Supply fee covers cost of lino, paper and inks.* Participants must take a Studio Safety session prior to class.

We spend years learning to “get it right” in drawing - developing skills inperspectiperspective, proportion, rendering. But what if we threw all that out thewindow and just played with drawing? New tools, new materials, new ways to make marks, and new ways to challenge ourselves to see any objectincluding the human body. Come and play in a completely non-judgmentaland experimental way and just see where it takes you. Note: This workshop is on the upper floor of the Button Factory, which is not accessible by wheelchair.

VVA-12-106 Playful Printmaking Without a PressVictoria CowanSaturday, December 15th, 10:00am-4:00pmSunday, December 16th, 10:00am-3:00pm$140 members / $155 non-members + $20 supply fee

We shall start with a brief overview of printmaking in general and samplesof relief prints. This method can be as basic as cutting a stamp from an eraser,or as rich as or as rich as making multi-layered works from a variety of plates. No matterwhat the desired end-product, the technique is simply to cut the plate by hand to leave the image you wish to print. Ink is then applied with a brayer and paper is laid on top to transfer the image. You can stop there, for an elegantand simple result, or add layers, print on a collaged surface, include hand colour in your favourite medium, or sew, fold or glue prints together tomake an extended work. The choices are all yours.

No prNo previous experience required. Water-washable soy-based inks will be used as an alternative to oil-based inks. No solvents needed. Supply fee includes bamboo barens, papers for printing, collage and chine colle papers, and hand-outs.

This program is intended for youth who have a passion for writing and want to learn the basic principles of creatito learn the basic principles of creative writing. The program covers writingprocess, brainstorming, plot and subplot, characters, backstory, dialogue, writer’s block, editing and publishing. You will be encouraged to apply whatyou have learned to both personal writing and group writing sessions. Noexperience is necessary. Fee includes a manual.

VA-12-93 Lego Animation (ages 8-12) - 7 weeksVanessa MonizSaturdaysSaturdays, October 20th - December 1st11:00am-1:00pm$100 members / $115 non-members

Calling all film-makers in training! Once a week, the Button Factory willbecome the Lego factory. Participants will have the opportunity to imagine,build and film their Lego world using stop-motion animation. This is a hands-on class allowing students to create storyboards, build with Legoand then use video camerasand then use video cameras, Mac cameras and the iStopMotion programto animate.

VA-12-96 Mixed Media (ages 5-8) - 4 weeksVanessa MonizSaturdays. November 3rd - November 24th1:30pm-3:30pm$100 members / $115 non-members

Charcoal, and pastels and ink, oh my! Come and unleash your inner artist and eexplore your creativity at the Button Factory. Learn to draw your portrait in the style of another artist, dip into some watercolour and use your imagination to sculpt exquisite creatures through some mixed-media fun! Each class will cover a new project and different medium. No experience required.

Crystal Bradford is a graduate of Environmental Resourcestudies from the University of Waterloo. She and her partnerLiam own a landscaping, restoration and native plant nurserybusiness. Passionate about the natural environment, youthand community, Crystal enjoys engaging thought by usingrecycling media in her work. She is a project coordinator forthe Procession of the Species celebrationthe Procession of the Species celebration.

Amanda Caldwell is a printmaker from St. Thomas, Ontario.She is a graduate of UWO, with a Bachelor of Educationdegree, an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree, and an ArtsManagement diploma. She has been practicing since 2006and is a founding member of the St. Thomas-Elgin Artists’Guild.

Albert Casson is a professional artist with over 35 yearsof experience as a fine artist and 20 years teaching drawingand painting. Albert has designed, administered and taughtnumerous individual and group art courses across the Region.He was also commissioned to produce artwork for KodakCanada, Panasonic, The Vancouver Aquarium, The CalgaryZoZoo, Molson Indy and Royal City Real Estate.

Pamela Clayfield has diplomas in Creative Writing andPhotography. She’s been writing for 10 years and, after giving a talk in her daughter’s class, realized there was great needfor writing instructor in K-W and developed Kids R Writeand The Writer’s Path. She publishes her work throughlulu.com and has some titles on Amazon.

Victoria Cowan is a prize-winning graduate of OCAD and Concordia University. Active both as a jurist and instructor, Victoria shows regularly and has won awards in painting and printmaking. Examples of her work, her teaching schedule and up-coming exhibitions can be seen at www.victoriacowan.ca

Amy Ferrari achieved a degree in product design, whichhas provided her with a unique and solid foundation forlater pursuing a career in art. During 20 years of painting, the remainder of her art education has been self-taught,allowing her to develop an intuitive, transformative techniquewith a distinct, organic style. www.amyferrariart.com

Atena Ganea is an artist and educator who resides inKitchener. She has a degree in Fine Arts and has taken courses at both the University of Waterloo and WilfredLaurier. In her work, Atena incorporates a nice blend of traditional European style with contemporary NorthAmerican modernism.

Fabio Gasbarri started painting and drawing at an early age.A graduate of the Central Technological School in Hamilton, Ontario, Fabio has kept up his studio practice for over 30years and has an extensive exhibition history including incountries such as Spain and Cyprus.

Connie Melnik was educated at the Dundas Valley School ofArt and has painted and instructed classes in the Puslincharea for over 30 years. Many exhibitions throughout WesternOntario have enabled her to hone her skills. The highlight ofher career was being recognized and invited to participatein the Biennale Internazionale dell ‘Arte Contemporaneain Florencin Florence, Italy, in 2003.

Vanessa Moniz is a passionate and caring artist and recentgraduate from the University of Western’s Faculty of Education. She is currently pursuing a career in teachingwhere she can inspire and encourage others in the processof art making. Vanessa hopes to share her experience, creativity and inspiration with the community at the ButtonFFactory this fall.

Hubert Haisoch currently resides in Guelph, but has previously taught in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania as well asOntario. He has a B.Sc. in Art and Art Education and an MFAin Painting and Printmaking. He began teaching in 1959 andhas taught at the elementary, secondary, college and universitylevels. Since retiring, art critique work, adult teaching andeexhibiting has kept him active in the arts community. He isrepresented in numerous private and corporate collections.

Liam Kijewski likes to promote creative thinking and improv-isational skills as well as good manners with students. He isan eco-arts teacher for Artists on the Move, and has taughtat the Eco-Arts Discovery camp. He loves music and enjoysrhyming on the funk. He was a coordinator for the Processionof the Species celebration. Liam is working on an eco-theatreprogram program for schools with his partner, Crystal.

Instructor Biographies

Nancy Peng studied math at the University of Waterloobut has since enjoyed exploring painting and silver jewelrydesign in Toronto and Kitchener-Waterloo. She has exhibited her creations at the Harbinger Gallery and the Button Factory.Her paintings depict varying perspectives and views oflandscapes and her community.

Sheila Macdonald Roberts took painting lessons as a childfrom Toronto artist Adrian Dingle. She attended the DoonSchool of Art and was taught by F.H.Varley, A.J. Cassonand others. Sheila was the first female student to win theT. Eaton Scholarship. She then spent a season at the Stratford Festival as a costume painter and won the GuthriAAward for costume breakdown.

Brian Smith was accepted into the Ontario College of Artwith advanced standings and a full scholarship. Aftergraduating in 1969, he worked as a graphic designer, including founding his own brand development company in 1979. Brian is a practicing fine artist, specializing in classicaldrawing and painting from the figure. www.drawn2life.com

Gwen Tooth spent her early years in Huron County and nowresides in Toronto. Gwen has passionately pursued many artdisciplines for over 40 years. She shows her paintings regularly and specializes in teaching expressive acrylicabstraction techniques. Gwen gently guides each student alongthe path from realism to abstraction in its many forms. Shecompleted a Bachelor of completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2005 from the OntarioCollege of Art and Design University, where she studieddrawing, painting, and printmaking. www.zhibit.org/gwentooth

Marshall Ward has taught life drawing for over ten years,and is the recipient of Wildfrid Laurier University’s Awardfor Teaching Excellence in 2007. He has exhibited his workthroughout Southwestern Ontario, England and Japan, andhas been published in International Artist and CanadianHouse and Home.

Wilma Vanderleeuw was born in the Netherlands, and is anartist with European flair. She creates not only portraits ofpeople and animals, but scenery and buildings. Her mediainclude pastel, acrylic, oil and watercolours. Wilma is a member of KWSA, Visual Arts Ontario, and the Central OntarioArts Association. She has received numerous awards of eexcellence in juried art exhibitions and competitions, and herwork hangs in private homes in Canada, the US, and theNetherlands.
