Strong showing from the Healthcare Community to engage State Senators French and Giuda at Franklin VNA & Hospice’s Meet Your Representative Event

Below: In attendance were teens

from Belmont High School Below L to R: Elaine Cartier, RN Hos-

pice Director, Senator French, Senator

Giuda and Tabitha Dowd, MSN RN

Executive Director

and Tabitha Dowd, MSN RN Executive

Director

NH State Senators Harold French and Bob Giuda spoke both to the students and to the eager audience about their role in government and some of their plans for the upcoming legislative season.

In addition to the Belmont High School students and other constituents, there were many health care professionals present, including Meg Miller and Cheryl Barnes, Administrator and Director of Nursing for the Peabody Home to Tabitha Dowd and Elaine Cartier, Franklin VNA & Hospice's Executive Director and Hospice Director.

Dowd is the force behind the event, "I wanted to open a door between our health care experience and knowledge and their desire to craft strong healthcare legislation. These events are a beginning of that."

When asked about possible pay rate increases for the Choices For Independence Program, to attract more people willing to provide in-home care to allow seniors to remain in their own homes and out of Nursing Homes, Repre-sentative Giuda said, "I sponsored a bill last year to try to raise the rates. It’s always a constant battle…. I think there’s a much better chance of something coming this session." He encouraged attendees to attend hearings and testify.

As they discussed that the high cost of emergency room visits and frequent 911 calls would pay for months of CFI for those same individuals and free up resources for true emergencies, he added, “We have to highlight that and say, look, here’s a much better way to spend that money. Now you’re seeing an interaction, where someone has identi-fied a problem and a solution so now you’re going to see a couple of guys go to work and try to get it fixed.”

The NH Senators capped off their event by accompanying two Franklin VNA & Hospice nurses to a patient visit where they saw home care in action. Patients are being discharged home with more and more complex health needs, including chest tubes, wound VACS, total nutrition given though an IV – all being treated in the patient’s own homes.

“We wanted to show the NH Senators the real challenges facing home care,” says Dowd. “How can they make in-formed decisions on these issues without really seeing the people affected by them?”

After their visits, so struck by the dedication of RN Cindi Payne, the nurse he accompanied, Representative Giuda noted, "You love what you do, don't you?"

"To the core," she replied.

Cervical Health Awareness Month

When you hear people say “cancer prevention” they are usually talking about steps we can all take to lower our

risk of getting cancer, like quitting smoking and wearing sunscreen every day. For a few types of cancer, includ-

ing cervical cancer, “cancer prevention” includes getting a vaccine to prevent it. Since January is Cervical Health

Awareness Month, Franklin VNA & Hospice wants you to know that there’s a lot you can do to prevent cervi-

cal cancer, including getting the HPV vaccine.

Each year, more than 11,000 women in the United States get cervical cancer. Almost all cases are caused by the

human papilloma virus (HPV), a very common infection that spreads through sexual activity. The HPV vaccine

(shots) can prevent HPV. For those who have HPV, cervical cancer can often be prevented with

regular screening tests and follow-up care. These regular cervical cancer screenings can help detect cell changes early, before they turn into cancer. Most

deaths from cervical cancer could be prevented by regular screenings and follow-up care.

So starting this January, make a point to encourage women to get their well-woman visit this year. Most

insurance plans cover well-woman visits and cervical cancer screening. This means that, depending on their

insurance, women can get these services at no cost to them. If you are a parent, take the important step of getting your pre-teen vaccinated against HPV. Both boys and girls

need the vaccine. Not a parent? Encourage the people with children in your life to get educated about the need for

their child to receive the HPV vaccine.

11,000 cases of cervical cancer a year is 11,000 too many when it can be prevented. Protect yourself. Protect the

ones you love. What better New Year’s resolution is there? Check out healthfinder.gov for resources and

information.

In 2019 You Need One Resolution Some people may have a whole laundry list of New Year's resolutions, including

losing weight, eating better, spending more time with family and, in general, figur-

ing out ways to enjoy life more and not be so stressed out. Our challenge for you is to get your recom-

mended amount of sleep! The National Institute of Health found that adequate sleep can help lower

your risk for diabetes and heart disease, help with weight loss, improve your mood and help you get

sick less. Sleep is when your cells build muscle, regulate hormones that control weight and mood and is

when we build our memories. Skimping on just an hour of sleep can cause us to perform 7 points lower

on IQ and vocabulary tests!

So how do you figure out how much sleep is enough? To figure out how much sleep your body needs will take a few nights of good restful sleep. The reason you can't figure this out in one night is because often times we sleep too little and accrue what is known as a sleep debt. Sleep debt is the reason why you want to sleep-in on the weekend mornings. You skipped on sleep during the week and now need to make it up. Because of this, the amount you sleep in on a Saturday morning may not necessarily be the amount of sleep your body actually needs every night. Make a point to go to bed early for a few nights, in a healthy sleep environment, then see what time you wake up in the morning feeling well-rested and energized. That will be your new hours of sleep goal number.

What’s a healthy sleep environment, and how do you create one? First, keep a consistent bedtime to allow for your needed sleep, even on the weekends. Make sure the room is truly dark and quiet. This may mean...

Moving electronic devices to a different room

Putting light blocking tape over small offending standby lights

Ensuring that your curtains and blinds are thick enough to truly block out light and sound.

A small fan or other “white noise” producer can help if you have noisy neighbors. Next you need to make sure the bedroom is a comfortable temperature, the National Sleep Foun-dation recommends you aim for a little bit on the cool side, 60 -67 degrees. The cool air will help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep. If you get cold feet, wearing socks or putting a hot water bottle by them is just fine. Lastly, you need to train your brain that it’s time for sleep

Try not to have any activities in your bedroom aside from sleeping and sex.

Move out the TV

Avoid playing on your phone or tablet while in bed

Wear comfortable sleeping clothes

Do something restful for a few minutes before going to sleep like deep breathing exercises or writing in a journal.

If you have trouble sleeping and are lying awake at night, get up out of bed to read a book for a few minutes rather than grabbing for your cell phone. The light emitted by cell phones and other electronic devices can trick our brain into thinking that it's morning time and start our chemical wake-up process. Getting enough sleep should truly be the one resolution that you start for 2019. It will help you lead a more productive, happier, less-stressed new year! Added possible bonus...it may help you loose weight as well!
