SUNDAY 3 APRIL
BUNGONIA CAR FIRE A Mitsubishi 4WD was travelling south along Oallen Ford Rd and when near the intersection of Lumley Rd, the driver saw smoke coming from under the bonnet and stopped in the centre of that lane. The vehicle was shortly engulfed in flames as the occu-pants attempted to remove some 8kg & 4kg Gas bottles from the vehicle but didn’t get them all out with some of the bottles exploding. As with all modern cars, once the aluminium started to melt, that carried the fire to both sides of the road caus-ing a relatively small section of grass to burn out. Luck-ily it wasn’t a day or two earlier. The occupants escaped with minor burns and smoke in-halation. With the assistance of staff from Ardmore Park, their water tanker and heavy equipment and Bungonia RFS, the fire was extinguished and the vehicle pushed to the side of the road. Although the cause of the fire was not from the gas bot-tles inside the vehicle, remember that they should be well ventilated and not carried inside a vehicle.
* * * The new Goulburn Mulawaree Council Library van will be coming to Bungonia to offer library services to the community on Wednesday 13 April ( Judy’s Morning Tea ) between 10.30am - noon. So if you want to see what the Library Van can offer
you and the family, then come on down and enjoy a fresh cuppa whilst you are there.
* * * Statutory Bush Fire Season finishes as of 1 April but that doesn’t mean you can just light those fires. You still need to let Yass know at least 24 hours prior to lighting that spark and also your neighbours and, as a courtesy, let your local Captain know when and where.

Bungonia Hall Supper Room.
Judy’s Kitchen Table morning tea will be cut back
from every second Wednesday of the month to just
the second Wednesday of the month - until further
notice.
All that cooking, together with other functions and
commitments has been a little too much for our old
chooks that do all the cooking. So they are going to
get some much needed breaks for a while.
We hope to see you all on the 2nd Wednesday of each
month for a get together and great food.
INCREASE IN FEE’s It is currently being discussed about the currents fees for the hire of Bungonia Hall. The current fees have stayed the same for many years but maintenance and upgrades to the hall, and other community projects, are depleting the bank accounts of Progress and, as a result and coming in line with other communities around the area, the Hire Fee’s will be in-creased as of the next AGM. The same situation has befallen the Bungonia Times bank account due to some advertisers feeling it is be-yond their desire to pay their bills, one being in the Thousands from Marulan. As such, the Bungonia Times “ may be “ forced to raise the advertising charges as of the new Financial Year and / or reduce the print size of the publication from A4 to A5.
The Big READ bus
From Goulburn Mulwaree Library will visit Bungonia Hall between
10.30am - noon on Wednesday 13 April 2016.

SHOUT OUT
A big shout out for the staff of Ardmore Park who as-
sisted the Bungonia RFS in the extinguishing of the
Mitsubishi car fire on Oallen Ford Rd during the week
and offering the use and support of their heavy equip-
ment. It was very much appreciated.
FIRE DANGER RATINGS Catastrophic
For your survival, leaving early is the only option. Leave bush fire prone areas the night before or early in the day - do not just wait and see what happens. Make a decision about when you will leave, where you will go, how you will get there and when you will re-turn. Homes are not designed to withstand fires in catastro-phic conditions so you should leave early.
Extreme Leaving early is the safest option for your survival. If you are not prepared to the highest level, leave early in the day. Only consider staying if you are prepared to the high-est level - such as your home is specially designed, constructed or modified, and situated to withstand a fire, you are well prepared and can ac-tively defend it if a fire starts.
Severe Leaving early is the safest option for your survival. Well prepared homes that are actively defended can provide safety – but only stay if you are physically and mentally prepared to defend in these conditions. If you’re not prepared, leave early in the day.
Very HighVery High, High, Moderate - Low Review your Bush Fire Survival Plan with your family. Keep yourself informed and monitor conditions. Be ready to act if necessary. Usually, fire details are locally updated on the Bungo-nia Facebook page when circumstances permit.
If you see this vehicle around - the female driver is
strongly suspected of stealing $18,000 worth of equip-
ment from a Bungonia property in late September
2015 and is also responsible for having the stolen box
trailer taken from the same property. She has since
been charged with Goods in Custody of the stolen
trailer and possession of unlicensed ammunition but
the $18,000 of equipment has not been recovered.
She frequents the Bungonia, Windellama & Marulan
area using the guise of “Pigging” to get onto the
property - but don’t paint all pigers with the bitter
paint brush that this shiela has left with a lot of peo-
ple.
The offender, Natalie Cepenuik, born 17 March
1988, as part of her current Bail conditions is not to
enter Bungonia.
She is due to appear in Goulburn Court on 18 April
for a “ Not Guilty Hearing “.
Current partner has a similar single cab vehicle
HAD-34B
The matter next goes to Goulburn Court on 18 April 2016 for
“ Hearing “.

Gardening in March Start preparing for the coming winter, rake up fallen leaves
and compost to make rich mulch for the spring. Start moving or
covering frost tender plants to a sheltered position.
Order bare rooted roses, trees and shrubs now to establish
before the really cold weather. Plant tulips and iris if this has not
already been done.
Plant garlic now in an area that was not planted the previ-
ous year, in full sun and free drainage. Harvest when leaves die off.
Pick remaining apple’s and pears, clear fallen fruit from
under the trees to prevent the spread of disease.
Place sticky bands around the trunks of apple’s, pears,
plums and cherries to trap wingless winter moths. These can be
made from greased brown paper. Also plant bare rooted berries
while the soil is still moist and warm, this will enable to the plants
to establish before the really cold weather sets in.
Don’t forget to clean the flue of wood burning heaters be-
fore lighting to prevent them catching on fire and bring in the fire
wood ready for the first cold day.
Stay warm and cost.

I used to attend and donate whole blood but you can only do that every 12 weeks which saves 3 lives. The girls down at the Blood Service are absolute crackers and you will thoroughly enjoy your time down there with them, have a few milk shakes and snacks before leaving and you know that your donation will be di-rectly used in a life saving situation. Marulan Cemetery
Late last year Goulburn Mulwaree Council refused an application from the Al Mabarrat Society for an Islamic Cemetery in Marulan. That determina-tion has been appealed to the Land & Environment Court with the applicants determined to go against community concerns and wishes and proceed with the development of this cemetery. Council is now preparing its defence to its decision and have filed five expert reports in relation to traffic, bushfire, Aboriginal Archaeological Heritage, plan of management and permissibility. Council is also taking a very strong stance that this application is not per-missible under the Council’s current LEP. We understand that the Land and Envi-ronment Court hearing will commence on the 2nd of May 2016 at 9:30am onsite in Marulan before resuming at Goulburn Local Court. The hearing shall then re-sume in the Land and Environment Court in Sydney on the 3rd of May 2016. Council will make a very strong case to not only defend its decision but also to ensure that the community is heard by the Court.
SERIOUS MVA - JERRARA RD A serious Motor Vehicle accident oc-curred upon Jerrara Rd, Bungonia, on the 11 March, at one of the causeways whereby a vehicle travelling south has lost control on the wet roads surface and spun into the Armco railing causing serious damage and injury which re-sulted in the roads total closure and Air Ambulance being called in to evacuate two seriously injured children and the female driver. Please take care on our roads - espe-cially during the wet.

BUNGONIA. ACCIDENT.- A rather painful accident, but not attended by serious conse-quences, happened to Mrs. George Broadhead and infant, on Sunday last. It appears that the family were coming into church on the day named, when the boy who was driving ran the buggy into a hole, and at the same time pulled the horse round. The jolt and sudden swerve threw Mrs. Broadhead, who had a child in her arms, out, and the wheel-passed her over and the baby's leg, fortunately not breaking any bones; but giving both a severe shaking.
I like the sound of you not talking.

BUNGONIA ( From Our Correspondent. )
Kicked by a Horse:- On Saturday last while returning from the
cricket match Mr. Charley Broadhead met with a nasty accident. He was riding alongside his brother, Leonard, both being on horseback,
when the animal that Leonard was riding lashed out and kicked
Charley on the leg, inflicting a nasty wound on the shin, causing
two bone splinters to protrude through the skin.
Something About the Cemetery.- A few weeks ago the Bungonia
and District Progress Association undertook to have a new rabbit-
proof fence erected round the cemetery, and after carrying out the
work the Association decided to have further improvements exe-
cuted within the enclosure. At last meeting it was asked if the ceme-
tery was vested in trustees, and the reply was that there was no
such body, and it was thought that the Bishop controlled that busi-
ness. A motion was carried that the committee appointed to carry out the
work interview Bishop Gallagher and Bishop Barlow and ascer-
tain from their lordships the terms and conditions on which the land
was held. As far as the interview with Dr. Gallagher went no light
could be thrown on the subject, as no records could be found in
Goulburn. Subsequently a meeting of parishioners was held on
Sunday last with the Rev. Father Collins in the chair. It was unani-
mously decided that a searching inquiry be made in Sydney, and
that the following gentlemen be appointed trustees: -Messrs.
James Armstrong, G. Broadhead, and J. Hogan. No doubt the
Church of England parishioners will find themselves in the same fix, as both cemeteries are on the one block, which was a grant
from the late Robert Futter. In those days a parish priest and a
rector of the Church of England were stationed at Bungonia, and
were recognised as Government officials, as they had a fixed salary
from the Government. No doubt Sydney was the headquarters in
those days, and the records can be found there.
Sickness.- Influenza is raging through the district, and as soon as
one recovers there is another case to take the patient's place.

BUNGONIA. ( From Our Correspondent. ) Late Fatality.-- The
remains of the young man, Harold Lee Frost, who was accidentally killed through colliding against a gate on the roadway, were taken to
Sydney on Wednesday, and were interred alongside those of his
mother, who died a few years ago. At the 10 o'clock Mass on Sun-
day the prayers of the congregation were requested for the repose of
his soul by the Rev. Father Slattery. The poor fellow will be
greatly missed from our midst for his sportsmanlike qualities, as he
was the promoter of the Bungonia Football Club. It is said that he
was coming to Bungonia the night of the accident to take part in
some of the new dances which the young folk were learning. He
often went by the name of "Murphy," as he told his schoolmates he
was " the clean potato. " A few months ago he was chosen to go with the troops to Egypt, and was about setting sail when his father
died, and by request he was allowed to cancel his offer. He was the
only son in a family of three, and is survived by two sisters. On the
Land.-Messrs. Marsh and Lindsay Broadhead have finished
threshing for a grand yield of 40 bushels of wheat to the acre. This
goes to show what can be done on the land with a good season, such
as we are having. There is plenty of land in the Goulburn district
that would give a return of £10 per acre the same as Broadhead's
property. The owners prefer to leave it idle and turn it into sheep-
walks. They say " It's not worth the game unless you are out on the
wheat belt, where the average is ten bushels to the acre. " Harvesters and strippers have been worked in this district with great success,
and the land has been proved a great money bag.
The Canberra Times Tuesday 14 June 1927 p 1
After three days of enquiry, during which about 29 witnesses were
examined, the Coroner has found that Constable Owen Edwin
Bell died from injuries received on May 27th through being
knocked down by a car negligently driven by Ernest Hibbert, whom he committed for trial for manslaughter at the Goulburn
Quarter sessions on September 13th, substantial bail being al-
lowed.

Queanbeyan Age & General Advertiser
Thursday 7 September 1865
GOULBURN. MAN FOUND DEAD.- On Monday evening the
dead body of a man unknown was found about five miles from here,
and in the direction of Bullamalita, by a shepherd in the employ of
Mr Bradley. The body, which is that of a young man, was found
near a tree, with the head resting on one hand, as if the deceased had lain down to sleep. Decomposition had set in, and it is conjectured
that the body had lain for about two months before it was thus dis-
covered. Deceased appears to have been a young man with fair hair,
and, from his dress, to have belonged to the working class. No one
has been missed from the neighbourhood lately, so that he was
probably a traveller. -Herald, August 30.- The same paper, of
Saturday, adds, that an inquest was held on the body, at which Dr
Hanford deposed to making a post mortem examination of the
body ; the clothing of the deceased consisted of a blue monkey-
jacket, much worn, check cotton doeskin trousers, patched in two
or three places, common blucher boots with nails, a home-made serge shirt next the skin, and over that a plum-coloured check cri-
mean shirt. The body was very much eaten, except in those parts
covered by the clothing, and was much decomposed; externally
there were no marks of violence, with the exception of an old and
united fracture of the left leg, between the knee and ankle ; on the
left arm there is a union jack in vermillion, and on the right arm
cross flags in Indian ink, also a ship, and CA 1860 in roman, and
A-U-G in italic letters; deceased appeared to be 25 or 27 years of
age, and had been dead two or three months it was supposed from
natural causes. Verdict-found dead.

The Sydney Morning Herald Fri 4 July 1851
ENTERPRISING SPIRIT.- Mr. S. Davis, of the Australian
store, being confident that the general expectation of gold existing
in the district in a natural state is not without foundation, has at his
own expense fitted out a party of fourteen men, headed by a captain
from his own establishment; their place of rendezvous is " the Dead
Man's Creek," near Gunning, from which the party is to diverge.
We hope the enterprise will prove successful, if so, Mr. S. Davis
will deserve much praise for the public spirit herein manifested ; if
not successful, the thanks of the whole community are due to him,
seeing he has without help from any quarter entered with such a public spirit into the enterprise.
Captain Hovell, who has been to the diggings at Ophir, has been
out reconnoitering the Wallogorang and Gundaroo Ranges, Dr.
Cropper is also exerting himself at Lake Bathurst, in fact every
one who has got eyes have them more directed to the earth than at
any former period.
REACTION.- A number of those who left our township about
three weeks ago for Ophir, have already returned, some of them
were men of the most robust constitutions, but the labour, the wet,
and the cold, and the general misery, and the little chance of doing
better than at their ordinary callings, induced them to give up searching for an uncertainty ; those who went out with music, and
who have returned, it is said, should have entered the town singing "
weel gang na mair to yon toun." Some of them really look as if they

What has a whole bunch of balls and screws old ladies? A bingo machine
Goulburn Evening Penny Post Tue 24 Oct. 1916 BUNGONIA. ( From a Correspondent. ) A large number of resi-
dents assembled in the local hall on Saturday night, where on an
anti-conscription meeting was held. Mr. J. Armstrong, J.P., occu-
pied the chair. Messrs. F. W. Yates, G. Strangman, and J. Chris-
topher, of the Goulburn Anti-conscription League, we're the
speakers. The three speaker's, who delivered addresses of 40 min-
utes each, vigorously denounced the conscription proposals and
argued that conscription in Australia was not necessary, and if
adopted would prove disastrous to the pastoral, commercial, indus-trial and agricultural pursuits of the Commonwealth, as well as by
taking the manhood of the country away leave ourselves at the
mercy of Maltese, Asiatics, or Chinese, immigrants; that much more
effective service could be given to the AIlies' cause in the great war
by keeping all our men at home and accepting contracts from the
Russian Government for arms and equipment for the eight million
soldiers she had in her training camps and could not send to the
front for want of proper equipment. We had fought the Gallipoli
campaign to help the Russians in their time of trouble and relieve
the pressure on them, and now that they had concentrated their ar-
mies and had taken the offensive the best help Australia could give would be to see that the necessary munitions and equipment were
forthcoming to keep Russia's great armies in fighting trim. This
course would, instead of depopulating and ruining our country, as
Mr. Hughes proposed, bring millions of capital into the country, and
build up great industries as well as develop our immense resources.
At the conclusion of the addresses several questions were answered,
and a resolution pledging the meeting to vote against conscription
was carried. Votes of thanks to the speakers and the chairman con-
cluded an enthusiastic meeting.

BUNGONIA. ( From Our Correspondent. ) There was a
grand view of the total eclipse of the moon on Friday
last. Our next look-out is for the great comet, to arrive in
a few weeks.
After the grand fall of rain at the beginning of the month
warm weather followed, making everything spring like.
Grass and crops are making great growth, and many or-
chard trees are white with blossom. Frosts are keeping
away, and at the time of writing it looks as if another
rainfall is approaching.
The amount of tourist traffic to the Look Down week in
and week out is sufficient to warrant refreshment stalls
being started on the ground. The visitor would be glad of
any kind of shanty in order to obtain refreshments.
Our village is badly in need of accommodation, as every
day there are callers looking for it both for day and night
and they have to depend on good Samaritans to take
them in.
Mr. Fitzgerald, a dairy farmer on the South Coast, can-
not understand why the farmers in this district do not go
in more for dairying and pig farming. The fine crops of
lucerne and rich alluvial flats, with a never failing sup-
ply of water and plenty of shelter, warrant a good dairy-
ing spec. The land which is the cream of the district is
held by one man. If it were cut up into 200 acre blocks
there would be a rush.
Mrs. Smede and family will be leaving in a few days for
their new home, Ariah Park, to which place Constable
Smede has been promoted. Their going-away means our
loss. There has been some speculation as to who the suc-
cessor of Constable Smede will be. The school teacher
will not mind if he is a married man with a large family
to fill up thee gap in the school that the Smede children
will leave. The boys hope that it will be an old codger
with good-looking daughters. The girls are wondering if
he will be a single man. Take my tip, you are all out of
the running - it is a young man just got into double har-
ness.

Community First Responders
C.F.R. / S.E.S.
These blokes and women do an absolutely fantastic and critical job in responding to medical emergencies in this area and dedicate a lot of
their personal time in an effort to help and protect members of this, and other, communities.
C.F.R. Members are also member of the S.E.S., and are further trained in advanced First Aid techniques by the NSW Ambulance Service
and could be called upon to provide advanced first aid at roadside collisions and other emergencies in areas where there is no immediate
State ambulance service available or close by.
C.F.R. Members also have a positive working relationship with local Police, Ambulance and other emergency services.
In order to keep this vital C.F.R. Active in this community, further volunteers are urgently required. If you are interested in this line of
activity - please contact Kevin Muffet on 4844 7143 who will be more than glad to explain the processes to you.

The C.F.R. is still in need of suitable volunteers to join the
organisation as First Responders.
This would be a great career step for the younger folk
who are looking to get into the medical field Ambulance
Service, Police Force etc.
It would also be a great way for good local people to join
in a winning team who are out there to help others.
If you would like to join the S.E.S. / C.F.R. then give Kev
a call and speak with him ab
