    EditorialTHE BULLS EYE4 Wednesday, May 25, 2011

    Editorial

The California Fish andGame Commission has recentlyproposed to increase the quotaof bears allowed to be huntedannually by 300 bears, raisingthe already sufficient maximum

of 1,700 bears per season. Thehunting season lasts roughlyfrom October to December, andthroughout these three months, bear hunters are required tohave an identification tag tokill one bear. These suggestedchanges will help keep a heavysurveillance over the bearpopulation to keep the quotain check, but these precautionsare constantly questioned with

unreasonable suggestions toincrease the bear hunting quota. The upcoming spring seasonmarks the third consecutiveyear that the commission hasproposed to expand bear hunting

in California. Killing more bearsin California will endanger boththe environment and the bearpopulation. This unnecessaryincrease will not only upset manyCalifornians by the inhumanity ofthe commissions actions, but itwill also pose a threat on the restof the environment.

Commissioner MichaelSutton admitted to the Los

Angeles Times that 99 percentof Californians disagree withthe commission and do not wantthis proposal to be passed. In

addition to this, the HumaneSociety of the United Statesrejected the proposition and21 Cal i forn ian legis latorsencouraged the commissionto abandon the proposal. TheHMUS and California legislatorsare right to do so, being thatthe commissions actions areharmful and unnecessary.Countless disagreements haverisen from animal welfare andenvironmental groups concerningthe opposition of the idea. Thesearguments have not changedover the last three years for goodreason, yet the commission stilldoes not hesitate to suggest

    Claire HuangAsst. A & E Editor

the expansion of bear hunting. This request for an increase willonly satisfy a small portion ofCalifornians. The U.S. Fish andWildlife Service reported thathikers and explorers outnumber

bear hunters in a ratio of morethan 20 to one. Only onepercent of Californians takesup bear hunting as a sport;with this increase in the bearquota, a minute percentage ofabout 0.008 of the bear huntingcommunity will be satisfied with

one more kill, but 300 morebears will have lost their livesand a new threat to the bearpopulation will be created.

The commission stated thatit is necessary for more bearsto be hunted due to the growing

population of this species.Although the bear popu lationis gradually increasing, thecommission must keep in mindthat many bear habitats inCalifornia are changing due toconstant environmental dangersand that every decision will greatlyimpact the future of Californiasbear population. The gradualexpansion of bear hunting can

eventually lead to a larger quotafor bear hunters, numbers largeenough to place a negativeimpact on the bear population. The actions of humans haveendangered numerous speciesand subsequent ly causedextinction. For example, in 1922

the last grizzly bear in Californiawas shot; this scenario does not

seem implausible consideringthat the grizzly bear becameextinct in California due to

    excessive hunting.

By agreeing to this proposal, the bear population in Californiawill show a dramatic decreaseas more bears will be killedannually. This raised quotawould allow the number offuture propositions regardingthe expansion of bear hunting

to increase as well. The CFGCshould consider the drasticeffects that raising this quotawill have on the environment, sothat their actions will not lead toextinction of an entire population.

    A new scientific

breakthrough produced bycompanies such as PathwayGenomics have released ahome genetic test that allowspeople to test their DNA byswabbing the inside of theirmouth and sending the salivasample to a genealogy firm. By

doing so, people will be able tohave more knowledge regardingtheir likelihood of developinga specific kind of hereditary

disease. However, this processis unreliable, and will ultimatelyprove to be dangerous. Althoughthis kit represents undeniableprogress made by scientists, the practicality and reliability

needed to make it efficient islacking. These new at-homekits pose too many inexcusable

risks for it to be useful for theconsumers.

Reputable national healthorganizations such as theCenters for Disease Control andPrevention and the Food andDrug Administration have issuedwarnings to consumers lookingto purchase this new innovation. Both claim that genetic tests aretoo complicated to be done inthe privacy of the buyers ownhome and recommend thatgenetic tests should be doneonly with the advice of a doctor

and in a lab setting. In the

presence of a doctor, results canbe verified and different options

can be discussed immediately. With the kit, the users wouldhave to wait until their sample isanalyzed. Only then would theybe able to make an appointmentwith a doctorto discusstheir options. The FDA,which is ther e g u l a t o r ya g e n c yresponsiblefor reviewinggenetic tests, has approvedonly 12 ofthe 1,000genetic test

kits currentlyavailable. Of those dozen, none of them are the at-home version, but rathertests performed in clinicallaboratories with higher qualitytesting services. In order to helpprevent this defective productfrom being used, organizationslike the FDA should reject theproduct from being sold entirely.

This product also runs ahigh risk of false results, whichis inexcusable in the medical

    field. If consumers are given

an incorrect result, there aresure to be a number of negativeconsequences. For example, if

    Lowering Bear Quota

Every year during May,countless high school girlsand even several boys can beseen obsessing over hairstyles, dresses and suits, makeup, andmost of all, weight. They are allplanning for one of the biggestschool events of the entireyearProm.

Some students solemnlyswear themselves of f of carbohydrates, sugar, andall kinds of fattening foodsuntil the day after Prom, whileothers simply exercise until

they drop those extra two, five,

    or even fifteen pounds needed

to squeeze themselves intothe typical skin-tight dress orform-fitting tuxedo. Whatever

the ex t reme me thod fo r

the rapid weight loss, moststudents regret their ridiculousand potentially dangerous andthreatening crash diets afterProm is over and forgotten. These weight-loss schemesare seemingly harmless, butthe grave risk that crash dietspose is not worth the seriousaftereffects.

Whether it is for Prom or fora new summer body, suddenweight loss is nothing short ofunhealthy. Nearly 90 percentof all crash dieters put all theweight they lost back on shortlyafter they stop their diets. Insome cases, extra pounds are

gained because of the dietersbodys inability to adjust to theabrupt change in nutrition intake.

Extreme dieting can often leadto skin problems, including acneand rashes, which obviouslycompletely shatters a typicalteenagers optimal look forProm night and couple pictures.

Excessive dieting can also causeheadaches, constipation, eventualextreme eating disorders such as

    anorexia, and even the occasional

blackout. In their attempts tolook their absolute best, manyboys and girls ironically end upnegatively affecting their physicalappearances.

High school students shouldnever be putting their health atrisk for the sake of one ratherinsignificant night. Not only iscrash dieting untimely, but it alsovery inconvenient as Prom weekcollides with AP testing. Thechange in diet and lack of usualnutrients will strongly impact testscores. Students tend to feelgroggy and are often unableto focus when they have not

eaten properly before a test. They will ultimately benefit more

from reorganizing their prioritiesand realizing that an AP test faroutweighs looking exceptional

for Prom night. Some high schoolstudents will go to extreme lengths

in their attempts to impress theirpeers and dates and to makeProm the perfect night. Oftentimes, they succeed in single-handedlymaking their own situations worseby doing so.

    C r a s h d i e t i n g c a n b edangerous, and is definitely not a

sensible option for obtaining theideal Prom body. Pre-Prom dietsare simply unreasonable, and caneven pose a threat to ones health.High school students need tofinally understand that one school

dance does not make or breaktheir high school experiences.

Overdoing a diet for Prom will onlybring them grief and a bad highschool memory, while establishinga healthy lifestyle will be beneficial.

The Democratic PeoplesRepublic of Korea experienced

    a harsh winter that resulted

    in severe food shortages that

affected the citizens greatly.According to the United Nations

    World Food Programme,

without more internationalhelp, six million people in North

Korea may be at serious risk of

malnutrition or starvation. Thegenerosity of donor countries

    has withered and diminished

over the last decade in responseto Chairman Kim Jong-Ils

    unreasonable confinement.

Rather than being discouragedby Kim Jong-Ils poor national

    relations, donor countries

should be giving aid in order tohelp the six million lives at risk.

    The intense winter, severe

    flooding, and foot-and-mouth

disease shook DPRK to itscore. FMD is a caustic viral

    disease of cattle and swine.

Most animals recover, butthe disease leaves them

    weakened. With the FMD, the

people of North Korea will haveless milk and meat, which will

affect their growth. Adding on to

the crisis, the rise of food prices

makes importing goods harderand more costly. Kim Jong-Il

    needs to reestablish a strong

relationship between NorthKorea and the donor countries

like China, so that the citizens

    can thrive again. The United

States food aid was renouncedtwo years ago after North Korea

disconnected all ties with thealleviating rations, yet the North

    Korean government is not being

    held accountable for the food

    shortages. The governmentsdevastating economic policies

are fatal to the people of North

Korea. According to the WFP,government rations are at an

all-time low, currently supplyingno more than half of peoples

    daily nutritional daily needs.

    While malnutrition rates among

children have decreasedover the last decade, one in

    every three children remains

constantly stunted, meaningthat they are too short for their

    age.

Many people detestChairman Kim Jong-Il, however

    neighboring countries have seen

the nation in distress, so theydecided to donate food to North

Korea. This is the type of effort

that needs to be seen today sothat the malnourishment can be

    minimized once again. The U.S.

announced plans to distributeemergency food aid. The WFPsaid that the 3.5 million people in

    North Korea who were suffering

from malnutrition would be fed.The purpose of the mission is to

    examine the ways food security

in North Korea changed sincethe Crop and Food Security

    Assessment Mission, which

    assesses emergencies relatedto agricultural production

    or overall food availability

    problems, took place in

September 2010.If Kim Jong-Il continues to

ignore the needs of the people,

they will disintegrate and thegovernment will be thrown into

    chaos. No matter how anyone

looks at this situation, it will

inevitably lead to this result.Cutting food supplies will lead to

the death of millions of innocentpeople. Instead of having people

    suffer because of one person,

    neighboring countries should

reconsider food aid in NorthKorea to save the citizens.

The merciless leader ofthe Al Qaeda network who

    orchestrated the horrendous

9/11 terror attack in the United

States a decade ago, Osamabin Laden, was killed in a firefight

with U.S. elite forces on April

29, concluding one of the mostdevastating time periods in the

    history of America. When one

considers the countless innocentcivilian lives bin Laden has

taken, the death of bin Laden

is worthy of the relief and joy ithas caused. Without a doubt, the

U.S. has made the right decision

to assassinate bin Ladenacourse of action necessary in

    preventing the nation from falling

    victim to his perpetual savageryagain.

    Over the last few years,

    American citizens have observed

their nation thrive in a seeminglyterror-free serenity. However,

    according to new information

unveiled after bin Ladens death, the momentary peace from

    terrorist attacks would not have

Pro: Osama Bin Laden AssasinationJustin Park

    Asst. Editorial Editor

lasted for long. From bin Ladens

compound, the U.S. forcesdiscovered an intricate plan to

initiate a calamitous terror attackon the tenth anniversary of 9/11.

    The attack would target mass

transit passengers in a majorAmerican city, assumedly New

    York or Chicago.

    Another terr or

    m o v e m e n ts t r i k i n g o u r

    nat ion would

    p u b l i c l yh u m i l i a t e

    America for its

    vulnerability tothe Al Qaeda

    and its inability

    t o p r o t e c ti t s p e o p l e .

    Therefore, it was unquestionably

the U.S. governments dutyto take extreme measures inpreventing such an attack from

    taking place.

Fortunately, good measureshave been takenthe U.S. killed

    the terror plots main perpetrator.

The discovery of this latent terrorwould not have been possible

had the U.S. not executed the

    mission to assassinate bin

Laden. Now that bin Laden isdead, the chance of Al Qaeda

executing the terror plan hasbecome incredibly slim. All

    railroad stations across the U.S.

are in an extremely heightenedstate of alertness after being

    in fo rmed o f

    t he a l l eged

    terror plot, andbegan to equip

    their facilities

    with enhanceds e c u r i t y

    s y s t e m s .

    This sor t of p r e p a r a t i o n

    w a s o n l y

    made possibleby at taining

    the vital information during

the invasion of bin Ladenscompound. I f the U.S. didnot execute its operation on

    bin Laden, the dangerously

imminent terror scheme couldhave become a tangible reality.

    Instead, the U.S. successfully

demonstrated its intoleranceover its enemies, by valiantly

    assassinating bin Laden.

    Despite the success of the

U.S. on their mission, thosewho oppose the slaughter of bin

Laden assert that capturing himalive would have been a more

    prudent option. Over the past

decade, the U.S. governmentinvested over a trillion dollars

    in various military attempts to

    capture bin Laden alive. None

of the attempts were successful, and each failed attempt drew

    America farther from succeeding.

However President BarackObama was intelligent enough to

    comprehend the level of difficulty

in arresting bin Laden alive. Herefused to take any more risks

    by authorizing the assassination.

Obamas sensible decisionultimately prevented the U.S.

from losing yet another chance of

stopping bin Laden from furtherexpanding his terrorism.

    The iconic terrorist behind

    Americas fear has finally been

put to rest. Americas killing ofbin Laden was not an action of

    cruelty and imprudence. Rather,

it was a justified and satisfactory

    endeavor to serve long-overdue

    justice for its citizens.

    It was unquestionably

    the U.S. governments

    duty to take extreme

    measures in preventing

    such an attack from

    taking place.

    Blazing Trails of Satire

On April 29, 2011, the single

    greatest event in history of

England was aired live on every

television set in Great Britain. That fateful day marked the

    royal wedding of Catherine

Middleton and Prince Williamof England. People brought

    their entire families from all

    over England, broke bread,

and feasted in front of the royalgates. It is very fortunate that the

rest of the world was given theopportunity to view this event

    with minimal effort. Thankfully,

the trivial and far less significant

stories that tried to overshadowthe wedding were ignored by

    reputable media outlets while

Middleton was walking downthe aisle. News stations in the

    United States need to continue

reporting events like the RoyalWedding rather than burdening

    audiences with stress-inducing

    news stories.While the wedding bells

    were humming through the

streets of Buckingham Palace, citizens of the U.S. found it

incredibly easy to find a channel

that was broadcasting thewedding. Instead of reporting onan extremely useless invasion of

    Syrian troops onto Dara, Syria,

the U.S. recognized that humanrights are far less important

    than the royal wedding. Media

    stations are finally realizing that

royalty was established longbefore any human rights were

    impressive atfirst, the 500

    not possiblecompete with

    the 500,000

    citizens whoattended the royal couples

    first balcony appearance. For

the past 10 years, the U.S.has constantly been fighting

    the War on Terrorism overseas

thus making its military perfectlycapable of putting this matter

to rest within a couple of days.

People do not want to be botheredwith trivial happenings. Royalweddings, however, happen only

    once a lifetime.

While Prince William waswalking down the aisle during the

    ceremony, people at home were

    freed of random terrorist stories

and military invasions. WhenAmericans managed to get a live

    Instead of sympathizing for

countries that cannot manageto take care of their own pathetic

    problems, women were lining up

in shops in order to create anexact replica of her dress.

    Not only did news stations

    provide excellent coverage of

the magnificent dress, theyalso covered the princes

    extravagant and technologically

    advanced attire. Using his heat

absorbent suit as an example, companies and manufacturers

all around the world can now

    incorporate this technology

into their products. Homes canbe replaced and rebuilt with

ease, but a royal wedding can

never be recreated. Obviously, stations should have focused on

the wedding rather than the few

    tornadoes that, incidentally, left

not even a thousand citizenswithout a home around the time

of the wedding. Once more, news stations succeeded in

    recognizing that this number

does not come close to the

1,900 guests who received aspecial invitation to attend the

    ceremony inside Westminster

    Abbey.Nothing is more important

than the wedding of a royal

member of England; theevent was rightfully placed as

    the highest priority of every

credible news station aroundthe world, while the priorities

    of a few unreliable, never-to-

be-named-again news stationsplaced their priorities on human

    rights and terrorist events. A

media station should reflectits countrys ideals; it shouldaspire to present its audience

with fame rather than the civil

destruction that is occurringaround the world.

    For ten years, the United

States government has triedto locate Osama bin Laden,

the founder of Al Qaeda, a

    global militant Islamic group

that launched a series of suicideattacks against the U.S. that

is more commonly referred toas 9/11. After this tragic event,

    former President George W.

    Bush announced that bin Laden

would be caught dead or alive andthe War on Terrorism overseas

    began. When President Barack

Obama entered office, thecapture of bin Laden was one

of his top priorities and under

his command a U.S. militaryraid called Operation Neptune

    Spear was authorized. In this

raid, bin Laden was found inhis Pakistani hideout and killed.

    Although loca ting bin Laden

was an outstanding feat for theU.S. government, murdering him

    immediately was an impetuous

act. The amount of effort, time, and money spent on trying to

Con: Osama Bin Laden AssasinationHolly Liu

    Asst. News Editor

    find him significantly outweighs

the value of bin Ladens death.Bin Laden was unarmed

    during the invasion and therefore

could not have attacked. TheUnited States should not have

    killed Osama when capturing

    h i m w a s a

    feasible option.Overpowering

    h i m a n dbringing him

    back for trial

    was possible,and, if carried

    out, i t would

    h a v e b e e n

    more beneficial.

    His death does

    not solve the

problems created by his radicalideas but by capturing and

    interrogating him, the U.S. could

obtain a lot of critical information. The U.S. war efforts have

cost over three billion dollars and

ten years of military presence, yet the only accomplishment

has been bin Ladens death. His

death may provide comfort forfamily and friends of victims to

the terror attacks directed by bin

Laden, but it does not solve thedefinitive problem that the U.S.

    currently facesthe dismantling

of Al Qaeda and similar terroristgroups. The U.S. is currently

at a standstill in the two wars

    that have been

    star ted overthe search of

    bin Laden andmany lives are

    cont inuous ly

    being lost. TheU.S. entered

    t h e M i d d l e

    East to fight the

    reign of terrorbrought about

    by attacks led

by bin Laden, but his death didnot end the wars. By bringing

him to the U.S., the government

could have obtained informationand locations of other most-

    wanted Muslim extremists.

Bin Ladens death will alsoresult in retaliations against the

U.S. by his followers. The U.S.

has already found extensiveplans, which target the country.

His death will eventually lead to

further causalities to U.S. armedforces overseas along with more

distrust in the Middle East. The

U.S. is occupying the MiddleEast in an effort to stabilize the

    economic and political conditions

there, but his death will cause

a gradual disturbance in theMiddle East that could prove to

be counterproductive. Even ifleaving bin Laden alive would

    have been dangerous, it would

    provide the U.S. with leverage

to negotiate a cease fire with the

    Al Qaeda.

    Bin Laden should have been

apprehended; his death doesnot provide any closure in the

    Middle East, instead his death

will kindle more trouble for theU.S. than capturing him would

    have. Bin Ladens death was

abrupt and will require moreeffort, lives, and money to settle

the conflicts that will arise as a

result of his death. Capturing binLaden would have instead given

the U.S. more time and options

to deal with problems that havestarted from bin Laden.

    Have you ever eaten a

pancake? Well, of course youhave. Now, have you ever eatena GIANT pancake? One that was

longer than twice the length of

you palms? One that could easilyfeed four hungry people? One

that you had to put in a pizza

box to take home? This is exactlywhat I encountered when I went

to the Guasti Homestyle Caf in

    Chino, California.This past Mothers Day,

I decided that instead of our

    traditional dinner, my family

and I would go eat breakfast

    to celebrate. We arrived at

    the Guasti Caf expecting to

be seated within ten minutes. However, there was a huge

    number of people waiting outside

the door. I was not sure whetherit was always this crowded or if it

was just because it was Mothers

Day, but our wait was about 30minutes long. Although there

were a lot of people, the service

of the restaurant was surprisinglyquick. Two minutes after we

    sat down, a waitress came

over to ask what we wanted todrink. Our order took around 25minutes to come out, but when

I saw the dish, I understood

why. Each plates diameter wasaround the length of my hand

to my elbow, and they were all

completely filled with food. Iordered the pancake combo, andthe pancakes were literally the

same size of a medium pizza.

My moms omelet basically tookup half of her huge plate, with

the other half was filled with

fried potato slices. It also camewith a separate dish of biscuits

and gravy. My dad ordered the

Chilaguiles, a Mexican dishthat contains nachos, rice, and

    beans. We could barely finish

any of our food and ended up

    taking most of it home.

    The overall atmosphere of

    the restaurant was very relaxed

and friendly and the staff wasvery easy to talk to. The food was

    pretty average, it tasted pretty

similar to the breakfast servedat Dennys and was your typical

    homestyle breakfast, simple

and not overly fancy. Althoughthe price was a little towards

    the high side, considering the

size of each serving, it was stillpretty reasonable. The serving

sizes at this restaurant are really

oversized, so plan on comingwith your friends or maybe fastingbefore you come here! You are

When I started high school,I never would have expected to

become the person I am now.

Though I am nowhere nearwhere I thought I would be (and

    nowhere near where my peers

and parents think I should be), Iknow that I am happy. I realizedthat though I may not have

achieved what I had hoped and

planned to accomplish, I havegained so much more than I

could have ever imagined. It was

on this campus that I met someof the most amazing people in

the world, and one of my only

regrets about high school is thatI did not spend more time with

    these beautiful human beings.

    But high school is only

four years of your life, and youshould not dwell on something so

    insignificant and trivial right?

That was what I used tothink. I wanted high school to

be over, to get out of this city

    and break away from familiar

faces to encounter somethingnew and spectacular. As senior

year is drawing to an end, Iam realizing that though high

school is not and will not be

the most important time of your

life, it is still a memory thatevery teenager should have the

chance to keep for the rest of

    their lives.Appreciate what you have.

That was the attitude that I had

developed in high school abouteverything but high school. I

    appreciated all the situations

that I had been put in and all theobstacles I had to overcome in

my life, but I did not appreciate

high school.Even as I was starting senior

year in 2010, I still held to my

belief that high school was justa huge waste of time and effort. Now that I am almost finished

with my life here, I can finally

see that I did not appreciate highschool enough. I did not cherish

the time I had with my teachers

and my peers, and I did notmake high school a time worth

    remembering.

While it is too late for me tochange this and too pointless

for me to dwell on this regret, all

I can do is give those who still

have time left a piece of advice:make cherishable memories.

Looking to lose a little weight before the swimsuit season? Taking off some of those extra pounds

might tempt you to start depriving yourself of food, which is very unhealthy, but luckily for you, wehave two healthy and ingenious ideas to help you get your desired figureand fast!

Prince Harry of England, the younger brother of the newlywed Prince William, is still

up for grabs. The prince dedicates much of his time doing charity work in Africa and other

developing nations. He holds the rank of Captain in the Army Air Corps, Commodore-in-Chiefin Small Ships and Diving, and Honorary Air Commandant of Royal Air Force Honington.

Unfortunately, the prince is also enrolled in the Royal Military Academy, which does not give

him much room for fun. Thankfully, he has two personal secretaries to sort out and deal withhis love letters from various women.

Princess Beatrice of York is the stunning daughter of the Duchess of York, SarahFergusson. This beautiful bachelorette was also the first person in the royal family to finishthe London Marathon. She is also the first female in her family to be the first in line for thesuccession of 16 independent states. On the downside, she suffers from dyslexia whichdelayed her from taking her General Certificate of Secondary Education exams for a year.Eventually, she received high marks for history, drama, and film studies and she was alsoelected as Head Girl in her final year of school. Most would see her diability as a disadvantage, but who needs to know how to read when you have a face like that!

The limelight is slowly fading for the prince of music royalty, who is turning 53 this June.

On the bright side, he continues to date in hopes of finding his significant other. Notoriousfor his eccentric and unusual antics, Prince can still woo women with his amazing voice

and incredible passion for music. Doubtful? Many would feel the same way, but Princehas actually managed to win over girls almost half his age. His most recent girlfriend,

Misty Copeland, was only 29 years old! Over the past ten years, Prince has dated a grand

total of four different women who are all significantly younger than him. It seems that the

prince of music still has some game left in him.

With all the end of the year activities, it feels

like there is no time left in the day, yet all Brahmasseem to have weight loss on their minds. In order

to prove to students that starving themselves is

not the answer to weight loss, I decided to work offthe weight. By working out for 20 minutes a day, I

showed that it is possible to drop weight and have

the energy needed to complete everything on yourschedule. In just seven days I lost five pounds by

    doing simple exercises each day.

At first I thought that exercising each day

would take a lot of effort, especially with so manyother things that I had to do in the day. It was

    overwhelming to imagine cramming another

activity into my already overflowing schedule. For the beginning of the week I focused on

cardiovascular activity and ran a mile each day for

two days. Just by running a little every day I felt

refreshed and already seemed to be more awakeduring my classes; I even began looking forward

to exercising. After two days of cardio, I turned myattention to strength training, which I was terrified

to attempt. I started by bench-pressing, the most

intimidating of the strength training exercises, as

well as doing pull ups and lifting weights. It wasdifficult for me to do these exercises because I had

never attempting any muscle building activities

prior to this. I began to see results immediatelyand felt stronger each day. As my strength built I

had more and more energy, and at the same time

I felt more confident because I was losing weight. Not only did I lose weight, but my arms were more

toned and my stomach seemed firmer. Finally, I did

one last day of cardio to end the week. I was ableto run faster and further because my body was in

better shape. I was not as tired after working out

and felt like I had accomplished something. As aresult of the strength training that I did throughout

the week, I dropped even more weight while

gaining lean muscle.Even though I did not change anything with my

diet, I was still able to lose weight during the end of

the year rush. I was also able to drop the pounds

without losing any energy or focus by simplygetting up and moving for 20 minutes each day.

Modern society often reminds us that we need

a quick fix for everything. So, why not participatein a one-week diet right before Prom? I decided

to see how effective these miracle diets can be by

experimenting with a fruit detox.I was to consume only fruit and drink water or

100 percent fruit juice for a full seven days. I had

to stay away from dairy, sugar, carbohydrates, and, oddly, too much physical activity. This is very

different from starving oneself because the diet

specifically mentions to keep eating the fruit until

no longer hungry (this sometimes meant eatingcontinuously for long periods of times since I am

    often left hungry).

I began my endeavors on Thursday, May 5and by the time I finished on Wednesday, May 12,

I lost a total of six pounds in seven days. It was

undeniably one of the most difficult challenges I had

ever overcome, as I have never tried dieting before. What made it even trickier was that I had to avoid

temptations presented by Cinco de Mayo festivitiesand Mothers Day meals. This is in addition to the

additional desires of going out to eat with friends and

taking food out of my refrigerator or food cabinet.

My daily routine consisted of drinking eightglasses of water, two glasses of fruit juice, an

average of one and a half fruit smoothies, and

snacking on various fruits. I ate mostly strawberries, pineapples, apples, pears, and tangerines. When I

went to make a smoothie, I combined all of the fruit

with orange juice and ice.Though it does not seem like enough food to

consume throughout one whole day, I was often

pleased to find myself a lot less hungry than Iexpected to be. During the experiment, I started to

notice the numbers drop on the scale and my energy

level increase everyday. My experience with detoxing taught me many

valuable lessons. I learned a lot about my self-

discipline and my limitations. On the other hand, Ido not think I will ever be able to repeat the sameself-control with such a strict diet again because it

became quite difficult to maintain after a while.

*Disclaimer: I had a hot dog while attending anAngels game on Mothers Day.

    On stage, Jeon never broke

out of character and pouredemotion into his parts. On top

    of that, he danced energetically

    performed passionately, singing

The musical highlighted thebest talents at Diamond Bar High

All of the songs were rehearsed

    well and nicely incorporated in

    vibe. Each performer portrayed

a lot of emotion at every momentof the play, showing that that

    they were accustomed to each

of their roles. The dances were very

    entertaining to watch because

    Hakuna matata. What a

wonderful phrase! Thoughhaving completely no worries

    is obviously impossible in the

world we live in today, I alwayslike to think that not adding

additional worry to ones life is

healthy. I dont think there is anypoint in stressing out. I mean, you can worry about something,

but there is no reason to keep

panicking and complaining aboutsomething stressful. Life is a lot

    happier that way.

Senior year has been quitethe experience. I can definitely

    understand why everyone loves

being a senior. This year, mygreatest struggle was not with

    college applications, or grades.

The biggest thing I struggled with

was pride. At times, pride can behealthy, like the pride I have for

being part of the best class ever,

while in other instances, it canbe severely detrimental, like the

    pride that comes with boasting.

    Unfortunately, I am guilty of

having the more unpleasant sort. There is a very fine line

between pride and arrogance.I believe I was foolish enough

to cross that line. Like almost

    all seniors, I procrastinated

heavily on apps. Nevertheless,I felt confident in what I did.

However, I let my pride blind me.

I thought that my rsum wasstrong. I thought that I could be

special and forego taking a visual

performing art. I thought that Iwould get into a strong enough

college so I would not regret

never taking a VPA. In thinkingall of this, I was arrogantand

    wrong.

But now, as I reflect, I realize

that college was never the goal,

so there is absolutely no reason

for me to worry about whatschool I attend. I can make themost of any circumstances I

fall under, just as I have in high

school. I just cant get cocky, which brings me to my next point:

    humility. Humility is awesome. If

I have ever emitted any senseof arrogance to you (like to

    you, Lea!), Im sorry. Humility

is a virtue I hope to attain ineverything I do, for with humility

    comes gratitude. Especially after

    being humbled in Kenya last

summer, I think I have become amuch more appreciative person.

Now, I love showers. I love

paved streets. I love having aneducation. I love having a sack

    lunch everyday (thanks to my

    awesome mom!). I love having

an awesome brother and sister.I love knowing awesome

people. Thank you to myawesome teachers. Thank

you to all my awesome friends

(shout out to Jessica Pan! for

knowing that I was writing asenior column). Thank you to the

    awesome soccer guys; we could

have beat Crescenta Valley anydaygiven proper refs. Thank

    you to the awesome volunteers

guys at the banquet about mythoughts on journalism. Make

    sure you appreciate your time

tremendously as a member ofthe staff, and I hope you develop

    your own meaning for journalism.

As I close, I want to remindyou to be modest and never getcocky. Arrogance is worthless.

    The switch from the Sierra

League to the Hacienda Leaguein 2010-2011 had a remarkable

    impact on the Diamond Bar

High School sports teams. Itmade for better competition and

    more successful seasons for

nearly every team. The DBHS girls soccer

    program made a name for

itself in 2011 by making a

complete transformation fromthe previous year. Coming off

of a 1-7 season, the team knewthat the league change wouldbe benecial. The program also

    underwent coaching changes

when Matt Brummett took overthe head coaching position.

    The competition leveled out

and Diamond Bar took third inleague with a record of 8-3. The

change in league was not the

sole reason for the astoundingimprovement this year. With all

    of the improvements the team

made, it would have done better

in any league it was placed in.Similarly, the swim teams

    assistant coach, Patrick

Murphy, became the headcoach for the 2011 season. This

    along with the league change

resulted in a 5-1 season after

a 2-4 season in 2010. Wherelast year the members would

grow more distant with eachdefeat, the opposite occurred

this year; the team grew closer

    together with each victory. The

bond of the team membersdeveloped so much that after

    the loss against Walnut, they

still remained supportive. Thecompetition was not as strong

    as previous seasons, but the

boost in morale led to morecondence in their ability to win.

With all of the success, several

swimmers were able to qualifyfor California Interscholastic

    Federation and even Masters.

Out of all of the sports on

campus, softball has had thebiggest turn-around compared

to any other team. The teamwent from a 0-10 record in2010 to a winning record of

    10-2 and Hacienda League

Co-Champions with BonitaHigh School. Though CIF

    is unfamiliar territory to the

DBHS softball program, theLady Brahmas have proven

    themselves throughout league

play to be solid competitors. While most teams saw

    improvement from seasons in

the past, several of the already

excellent Diamond Bar sportsteams remained triumphant

    and therefore were unaffected

by the change in league. Both girls and boys golf had

    incredibly successful seasons.

The girls golf came into the

Hacienda League from lastyears Montview League, but

dominated both leagues equallywith back-to-back undefeated
