I was surprised to hear that some of you have not heard about the Temple Visioning process. Although I have referred to “Visioning” and “Future” frequently in my monthly President’s column please bear with me as I do so again. I am repeating myself not only because this is an important discussion for the congregation but because we will be discussing these topics at the annual meeting on June 19 and we strongly encourage all of you to attend! To learn more about the visioning process please refer to the Temple’s Visioning Process web page at templebnaiisrael.org; the entire process is explained. It is possible that we will be bringing some innovative topics to the annual meeting in addition to initiating a discussion about the building. Although it is true that some kind of decision has to be made about the building (even if it is a decision to continue as is) some other ideas came out of the Visioning process and the Board and additional supporting committees have been investigating these ideas. There is a Cohousing Committee (www.urbanmoshav.org/bnai-israel.html) and, if it is determined that there is enough congregational interest to consider this a possibility, we will discuss cohousing as one option. In addition, another committee has begun reaching out to faith based organizations to ascertain if there might be interest in a Shared Values/Interfaith initiative which includes sharing space. If we learn that other faith based communities might be interested then we will discuss this at the meeting. Additionally, the Building Committee has done an incredible amount of research about building options which will be presented soon. However, it is important that you know that investigative work is being done so that information can be presented to you, and you can join in the discussion and decision making. That is why we need you to attend the annual meeting, if possible!” More information and a complete agenda will be included in the call to the Annual Meeting. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

I had the intention of skipping my article this month but then I was jolted by the burning of the Diyanet Mosque in New Haven, that, at this time, is thought to be due to an act of arson (editors note: it has been confirmed that this was an act of arson). I think I do not have to highlight the horror inflicted upon people by the hatred of others. Thank goodness there were no direct human injuries in this most recent act of violence but how can one measure the trauma and fear of repetitive exposure we all have by hearing about so many acts of violence and hate against all types of people including people of faith? And then as I write this, I received an email from the Interfaith Working Group and their call for participation in a vigil to be held for the Diyanet Mosque. I am so proud to be part of a community that is working hard to form relationships with others and is so empathic and empowering. Unfortunately, this has also left us in a position where we have to talk about security. Temple Bnai Israel has a dedicated group of members on our Security and Safety Committee which has been investigating security and safety concerns around our building and community. They recently met with an individual from Homeland Security and

hope to meet with the Willimantic Police. And yet, I cannot help but be saddened by the fact that this Committee needs to exist and spend so much time learning about how to keep us safe. The fact is there are differing opinions about how to keep safe: is it possible? Should we do things that make us feel safe even if it does not make us safe? I have been reading information shared by Presidents of other Reconstructionist congregations and the opinions are varied but I was struck by one opinion published in the Forward. https://forward.com/opinion/423676/letter-after-poway-my-synagogue-wont-be-locking-its-doors-were-keeping. The author opines against having locked doors and armed guards and I feel is worth reading regardless of how you feel about the subject. Temple Bnai Israel’s Board will continue to discuss our safety with the support of the Security Committee. Please let us know if you have questions or concerns. I hope to see you all at the Annual Meeting on June 19th!

The whole community is necessary...

...this is one of my favorite teachings about the revelation of God and Its Torah at Sinai, which we celebrate this month on Shavuot. If even one of the people had been missing at the scene, it’s been taught, the Torah could not have been given. (Bereshit Rabbah 70:9, Mekhilta on Exodus 19:11.) So, contrary to other teaching both within Judaism and outside of it, no one person can contain or reveal all of Torah. Not Moses, not Jesus, not Karl Marx or the Lubavitcher Rebbe.

There’s a human component to knowledge of the Divine and Its ways, and each of us contains an essential and unique aspect of that knowledge. And there’s an interpersonal component; we need to be together for revelation because the Divine Way is about the interactions of our lives together – our loves, politics, economics, communities and relationships, – as well as our individual, internal, existential lives, as well as the immense universe outside the human world. We might even say that our deliberations about how best to live with one another, when done in a spirit of love and learning, is a form of Revelation.

Two events this month exemplify these notions of the necessity of the whole community’s involvement in revelation: The first, on June 8th, our all-Federation Shavuot celebration at Temple Emanu-El, will be a program called “Everybody Stood at Sinai – A Celebration of Inclusion” (details on back cover) in which we affirm that those who have sometimes been

COMMITTEE AND BOOK CLUB NEWS

DAUGHTERS OF ABRAHAM BOOK CLUB Carol Kraus [email protected]

The Tikkun Olam Committee met on May 12th to discuss and plan a variety of actions. We will go forward planning a program on confronting racism with Dr. Mara Gottlieb from “Talking Changes, LLC” (see https://talkingchanges.com). We will be partnering with the local chapter of the NAACP and also plan to invite some additional partners into this special programming. Please consider if you have some time to help with preparations for an autumn program.

Our WAIM Work Day is scheduled for Sunday, July 21st; we will meet at the WAIM garden in Lauter Park, Willimantic, at 8:30 that morning for a couple of hours. Recall that the produce from this garden goes to feed individuals and families who depend on the Covenant Soup Kitchen. This would be a great opportunity for high school students to gain some community service hours required for their graduation while helping 2 different local organizations.

Thanks to our May leaders, Carol Kraus and Ellen Marshall. (our newest members are listed in BOLD and we give them a “shout out” for their willingness to help!).

This is also part of our commitment to WAIM as a member community, so please join in this fun morning of gardening.

Our efforts to meet with our Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF), Community organizer, Pat Spears, have been derailed a bit and we are again working to meet with him in early June. This meeting will help us to determine whether and how we will move forward with community organizing in our own synagogue community. The process will help to identify leaders and issues that we want and need to address most pressingly.

We hope to set up a meeting with Representative Joe Courtney in the late summer to speak with him about our continued need to keep the issue of settling refugees on our Federal agenda. This conversation will proceed with support from HIAS and our QCRR partners locally.

Please consider offering some of your time to Temple Bnai Israel’s efforts to repair the world. You may wish to help for a couple of hours working in the community garden or you may wish to assist us in planning or implementing one of our upcoming events. Please contact Merle [email protected] or 860-450-0435 to help engage with this important work. Thanks!!

TIKKUN OLAM COMMITTEE, continued from previous page

What’s Coming Up in June 2019 Since June is a very busy month for families, we will schedule our last Friday night potluck Shabbat and our last Saturday service of the season based on the consensus of the group:

Saturday June 1 – Family Shabbat 11:00 – 12 noon – we’ll celebrate Shavuot with some dairy treats! (***alternate date Saturday June 15***)

I have greatly enjoyed this past year working with the wonderful families of Temple Bnai Israel, and with the many kind, generous and spiritual members of this very special community (too many to name!). Many thanks to all the families who participated in J-Kids Families Club activities; I do hope you stay connected and continue to join one another in celebrating Jewish life together.

Special thanks to everyone involved in creating this grant opportunity with the Mansfield United Jewish Communities and honoring me with the task of carrying out an ambitious year-long schedule of programming and outreach.

Please feel free to call on me in the future for music or program ideas. Wishing everyone a relaxing and fun-filled summer, Nancy Beller-Krieger

INTERFAITH Sheila Amdur, [email protected]

RELIGIOUS LIBERTY UNDER ATTACK

Over the last year, we have all seen and witnessed the attacks on Jewish, Christian, and Muslim places of worship, and deadly attacks on their congregants. We must not accept this as “the way things are.” The first amendment to the U. S. Constitution enshrines this belief as a basic part of the American fabric, and we are each part of its guardian.

Three years ago, the Hochberg Human Rights and Holocaust Education Committee called together people from across all faith groups in our area and from people of good will. We mutually formed the Windham Interfaith Working Group, which has sponsored educational forums and interfaith sharing events over these last three years. It is the kind of initiative that builds over time, as more and more people open their minds and their hearts to what is new and different to them.

The Interfaith Working Group also promoted the “Welcome the Stranger” lawn signs and banners, one of which is proudly displayed on our Temple. The Working Group also sold over 200 peace T-shirts that benefited the local homeless shelter. We have also walked each year in the July 4 Boom Box parade.

Please join the Windham Interfaith Working Group on July 4 in Willimantic’s Boom Box Parade. We will walk under the banner of “Welcoming the Stranger”, we will walk with pride, and we will walk together. If you would like to join the Group on July 4, please contact Sheila Amdur at 860-477-0339.

Shalom chaverim—

Another school year draws to a close. This one was successful thanks to our wonderful school families; our talented and dedicated teachers, Merle, Stephanie, and Hillary; the ever-awesome Rav Jeremy; our super-engaging Israeli emissaries, Liron and Roy; and most of all, our amazing students!

We had a great time at our year-end picnic. We were rained out of our original Lauter Park destination but we still had a great time at the shul, picnicking and visiting and playing and enjoying impromptu drama and vocal performances - SEE OUR GREAT PICTURE FOLLOW UP - SPREAD A BIT FAR AND WIDE, ON THIS PAGE AND ON PAGES: 6, 12, 16, and the back cover.

I wish everyone a restful and restorative summer break. Whether you’re traveling, stay close to home, working, whatever...I wish you peace and happiness and immense joy.

With every best wish, Morah Dara

Dear Friends, as you may or may not know, for the past few months, either Rochelle or Peter has selected books to review in this bulletin. We'd like to invite you, our readers, to help us select books for review (thanks to Miriam Drew for her previous recommendation!). You're also invited to contribute a book review at any time. Please email Rochelle, [email protected], with suggestions and requests or simply let her know in person.

For the month of June, we are enjoying a summer vacation theme, so you will find some light beach fiction and some humorous texts available on our annex library carts. Come see what we have to offer!

Three Daughters is an excellent first novel by Letty Cottin Pogrebin. The three quirky, estranged Wasserman sisters must reconcile their differences and deal with past family secrets in this funny, well-written text. If you enjoy hu-morous, empathetic, authentic characters, this book is perfect for you. One reviewer writes, "Three Daughters is a rich and complex story of three lives, their loves, and the web of relationships that either hold these lives together or hopelessly entangle them."

Calling all pet owners/animal lovers! How to Raise a Jewish Dog by The (fictional) Rabbis of the Boca Raton Theological Seminary as told to Ellis Weiner and Barbara Davilman explains how to apply successful Jewish child-rearing strategies to Jewish dogs. Stereotypical behaviors and expectations color this manual with humor and laughter. For example, one chart shows what one should say when feeding table scraps to one's dog including, "See how nice!? From my own plate!" and "Of course I like it. But I'll be all right..." Enjoy this entertaining illustration of Jewish parenting/pet-owning. Happy reading!

YOUR RECIPES WANTED (DAIRY RECIPES TOO!)

Dear Friends, we are collecting recipes for a Temple Bnai Israel cookbook as part of our year-long focus on food and spirituality. If you have a family/favorite recipe to share, please put it in the grey cardboard box marked “Recipes”, located in the upstairs lobby.

You can also e-mail your recipe(s) to

Judy Stein at [email protected] or to the Temple office, [email protected].

Please include your name, and if there is a story about the food or the recipe that you would like to share, please include that as well. We look forward to gathering all of your recipes and creating our very special cookbook.

We’d love to TASTE those recipes as well; so feel free to make it for a kiddush, Shabbes dinner, or other food related event. A WORD ABOUT DAIRY. WE WANT YOUR DAIRY RECIPES AS WELL. Traditionally, we eat dairy, especially dairy desserts, on Shavuot, the celebration of the Revelation of Torah (evening of June 8, morning of June 9). Do you have special dairy dessert recipes to share for our Temple cookbook? Something you’ve brought to kiddush? Something you’ve enjoyed at home? If so, please email it/hem to Judy Stein [email protected]. Thanks!

Soon to be the Temple Bnai Israel Cookbook.

Send us your recipes!

AND WHILE WE ARE ON THE SUBJECT OF FOOD

BEANS I (Rav Jeremy) recently read a wonderful Mary Oliver poem about beans. It ends like this:

I know what you think: this is foolishness. They’re only vegetables. Even the blossoms with which they begin are small and pale, hardly significant. Our hands, our minds, our feet hold more intelligence. With this I have no quarrel. But, what about virtue?...

...do the virtuous thing.

Bring beans for the food pantry and place them in the basket in the lobby - boxed, canned or dried!

SUBSIDIES AVAILABLE FOR JEWISH SUMMER CAMP

We thank the Hevra Kaddisha for donating proceeds from taharas to the Hevra Kaddisha Fund.

I’ve often written about what a wonderful gift Jewish summer camping is to give to our children, how it’s a gift of fun, friends, independence, and solid grounding.

Now I want to remind you that there’s money available to help you send your kid(s). Through the generosity of the Temple’s Discretionary Fund donors, I have several hundred dollars available for small-to-moderate scholarships to Jewish summer camp.

There are also other sources of funding available to provide substantial scholarships, especially for first-time campers. If you’re interested in camp or in scholarships, please let me know. I’d love to perform the mitzvah of spending this money!

EVERYBODY STOOD AT SINAI A CELEBRATION OF INCLUSION

A JFEC/FEDERATION-WIDE SHAVUOT CELEBRATION

AT TEMPLE EMANU-EL

The Torah teaches Jews of every background were present for the giving of the Torah at Sinai: Jews-by-birth and Jews-by-choice, persons who were (visibly) whole alongside those who were broken or in need of wholeness, Jews of every hue, family station or sexual orientation. We stood as one before our Creator in a manner we have been hard-pressed to replicate since. This year, on the anniversary of this great convocation, Erev Shavuot (Saturday, June 8), Jews from throughout Eastern Connecticut will be gathering at Temple Emanu-El at 7:30 p.m. for a program entitled “We All Stood at Sinai: Inclusion in the Jewish Community.” We will be looking at diversity within our own community and examining ways that we inadvertently deny individuals who depart from our unstated “norms” equal access to the Jewish life that they aspire to and that others enjoy.
