Hugh Lowson said: “We are all thrilled that HRH The Duchess of Cambridge is helping to raise awareness of services like Chestnut Tree House by marking Children’s Hospice Week.“We are incredibly grateful for all the support we receive from our local community, as without this we simply wouldn’t be able to continue reaching out to families and providing this vital care.”The Duchess, as Royal Patron of East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH), talks about her personal experience of the incredible difference that children’s hospices and palliative care services can make for children and families, and asked everyone to join her during Children’s Hospice Week in shining a light on these lifeline services. In an excerpt from the video, The Duchess says:“Across the UK more than 49,000 children and young people have life-limiting conditions. For these families, having expert care and support is vital, and this is what children’s hospices provide. They deliver first class care in a safe environment that feels as close to home as possible, full of colour, warmth, love and support.“Today as we mark the beginning of Children’s Hospice Week – I hope you will join me in shining a light on the dedicated and inspirational staff and volunteers, and the lifeline services they provide for children and their families.“The work they do is extraordinary, and it really does make a world of difference.”

Chestnut Tree House also marked Children’s Hospice Week by getting involved with Spirit FM’s Local Radio Day on Friday 26 May. Members of the Fundraising and Marketing teams went out and about in West Sussex, enjoying ‘Sponge the Presenter’, lucky dips, a Punch & Judy show in Littlehampton and Hotham Park Miniature Railway. The Miniature Railway kindly donated all fares to Chestnut Tree House and Spirit FM also used the occasion to raise funds for us. A huge thank you to everyone who got involved to help raise awareness of our services during Children’s Hospice Week!

Welcome to our new Trustee and Treasurer

We would like to give a warm welcome to our new Trustee

and Treasurer, Nick Brown, whose area of expertise is Charity

Accounting, Governance and Finance.

Nick first became aware of the charity’s work when his

younger son, Matthew, who suffered from Duchene Muscular

Dystrophy, was referred to Chestnut Tree House in 2004.

Nick is a Chartered Accountant and for the last 20 years

he has specialised in acting for charities and not-for-profit

entities and holds the Diploma of Charity Accounting. He

has in-depth knowledge of both charity and commercial

organisations and this, together with his experience of using

the hospice means that he can bring a unique insight to the

organisation.

Nick and his wife, Tanya, have lived in Sussex for over 50 years. They enjoy walking and

taking in the beauty of the area. They also love to travel, especially to places with lots of

sun!Nick said, “I feel deeply privileged to be able to be a part of this amazing organisation. It

provides not only the highest quality of care and compassion to individuals at the most

difficult time in their lives but also provides help and pastoral care for the whole family.”

Changes to meal ticket purchases at St

Barnabas House

Please note changes to meal tickets coming into effect from Thursday1 June:

• The current meal ticket system at St Barnabas House will move to a single

price of £2.50. This will greatly help with planning and preparation for

the Catering Team.• The meal tickets will no longer be held by Finance and instead can be

purchased from the Coffee Shop in reception - Monday to Sunday.

• Please let Amanda and the Catering Team know of your meal choices as usual.

• The Nurses Office will still hold a stock of tickets for the night teams.

Keeping systems safe from cyber attacksA large number of businesses – particularly the NHS – were targeted this month with a ransomware virus known as WannaCry.

To ensure that our systems were protected, Sys-Pro worked to ensure our servers had all the essential security patches updated. We have been pushing out additional patches to all physical PCs and laptops. This will be an install in the background and your device may request a restart - please do so if prompted.

For those of you with laptops at home could you please bring them into the office as soon as possible and connect to the network (Wi-Fi or cable) to allow the patches to be applied.

A reminder to please be vigilant to keep our systems safe. If you receive an unusual email check the following:

1. Do you know or trust the sender?2. Are you expecting an email from them?3. Does the attachment look legitimate?

If you are unsure about anything then please ring the service desk who will be able to take a look for you on 01825 830000.

As part of Dying Matters Week, the St Barnabas Hospice Outreach Programme went out with leaflets regarding Dying Matters, to encourage people to talk about it and write something on their ‘Before I die’ blackboard. There was a great response, with all age ranges getting involved. Some of the things written on the blackboard included:• Get married• Go to Australia• I want to visit New York• Get a degree We even had the Mayor of Worthing, Sean McDonald, to visit. He wrote that he would like to visit Antarctica! We asked staff at Chestnut Tree House and St Barnabas House to get involved with Dying Matters Week by answering what they would do to help someone facing death or bereavement. At Chestnut Tree House, the board was upstairs in the Retreat and we had some great comments, here are a couple of them:• Give them a hug.• Be there for them – to talk or just to listen.

At St Barnabas the board was on the Education landing and there were some more great answers, here are a couple of them:• Be there to talk about it, but also be there to take their mind off it and help them laugh and enjoy life again.• Make them smile.

If you would like some Dying Matters leaflets or wish to know more about the Hospice Outreach Programme, please get in touch with

St Barnabas House News

Day Hospice saw another fantastic ‘Me Time Monday’ pamper event this month - a chance for patients, carers and family members to relax, have some tea and cake and get their nails, hair and makeup done for them.

The event was a huge success and saw 42 people attending and resulted in some new Day Hospice users. Well done to Jools Morrison for organising the event and for everyone in Day Hospice for making it run so smoothly.

We would like to say a really big thank you to everyone who volunteered at the event in various ways, including Kaylea Greenfield from Namaste Massage and Beauty, the wonderful ladies from Richard John, Becky Howie from Mac, Val our in-house therapist and Annette Smith offering hand massages.

Kaylea from Namaste Massage and Beauty said, “My Nan used St Barnabas House’s services ten years ago so I felt really proud to be able to get involved with the hospice. One lady said it was the most relaxed she’s been in a long time which was so nice. It was a lovely day and I really enjoyed myself.”

Me Time Monday in Day Hospice

Each dedication service will last for approximately 15 minutes and will take the form of a couple of poems, a reading and a quiet time of reflection. The services will take place outside the front of the hospice. However, if the weather isn’t kind to us, it will take place in Reception.

Everyone is very welcome to attend - volunteers, staff, family and friends.

There is still time to participate if you wish and have a Sunflower displayed in memory of a loved one. You can take part by picking up a leaflet in Reception, at one of our St Barnabas House shops, online at www.stbh.org.uk/sunflowermemories or by speaking to James Millen in Fundraising on 01903 706329 or email [email protected].

St B’s Schools Engagement Project gets the go-ahead!The St B’s Schools Engagement Project involves children going to the Day Hospice to work on an art project with patients under the care of St Barnabas House. The aim is to encourage patients and children to work collaboratively, in a non-threatening environment, to introduce hospice care and to enable children to explore concepts around life, death and dying. The pilot consisted of 4 courses with 32 children, 7 patients and 4 carers taking part.

Following the submission of revised aims and objectives at a meeting with the Senior Management Team, it has been decided that the St B’s Schools Engagement Project will recommence on 1 June. Best of luck to Marcelle Palmer in raising the profile of St Barnabas House across our local schools, and helping the next generation of our community gain a better understanding of death, dying and what our work entails.

A programme for the next new school year is to be planned and we will keep you updated on how this progresses.

Well done to everyone involved in the St B’s project!

Mayor raises £5,000 for St Barnabas HouseSt Barnabas House was lucky to have been selected as one of The Mayor of Worthing’s charities in 2016-17, together with Coastal West Sussex Mind and Worthing Samaritans. The Mayor, Counsellor Sean McDonald, and his Charities Team organised several events in the year as diverse as a Laurel & Hardy night, wrestling match, poker nights, murder mystery evening and singing and dancing shows. The St Barnabas House Community Fundraising Team were part of the Charities Committee, which raised an incredible total of £15,000 over the year, split between the three charities.

Well done team!

Please note that our new Hospice Care Pioneers leaflet has been finalised and printed, outlining our St Barnabas House clinical strategy, existing services, new developments and including a fold-out visual of our holistic care. If you would like to pick up any copies of the leaflet, please come and ask a member of the Marketing Team.

New Hospice Care Pioneers leaflet available!

Hospice Care PioneersHow your local hospice is bringing new, innovative care to your community

We believe that everyone deserves the chance to have St Barnabas’ care at the end of their life. That’s why we are pioneering new hospice services that will enable us to provide care to more people.“St Barnabas House has a reputation, gained over more than 40 years, of providing local people going through their end of life journey with the very best care available. But, we have never been a charity content to stand still and we always strive to bring our specialist care, knowledge and experience to more people.

Our vision is that everyone in our community is able to have the best possible experience at

the end of life. St Barnabas is the best placed organisation in our community to lead this drive

forward. In order to do this we are developing and

expanding on the care we provide ourselves, as

well as working with local hospitals, care providers

and care homes, to ensure that wherever a patient

is, the end of life journey for an individual and their family is as positive as we can make it.”Andy Burt

St Barnabas House Outstanding care for local people since 1973 St Barnabas House has been providing hospice care for

local people, and their families, for over 40 years. In that

time our goal has always been the same – to give people

and their loved ones the care and support they need. Our services have grown and changed continually

since we saw our first patient in 1973. We moved

into our new hospice building in 2011 and have since

established our Hospice at Home service and our

Hospice Outreach Project. Our Hospice at Home Team

cares for patients in their own homes during the day

and through the difficult night-time hours. Our Hospice

Outreach Project travels around the local area providing

advice, support and information for those facing a life-

limiting illness or bereavement. Together, these services

reach the lives of thousands of local people and their

families each year, providing the unique, compassionate

care for which St Barnabas is renowned. We have the skill, knowledge and experience to make a

difference to lives of the people in our community who

need our support. But, although we support over 80%

of adults who are terminally ill with cancer, we are only

able to touch the lives of less than 10% of people with

other life-limiting conditions. The care we provide to cancer patients is a fundamental

aspect of our core service and this won’t change.

However, we also have an ongoing five year strategy

which we launched in 2016. This leaflet sets out our

goals for local care and how we plan to expand the reach

of our services to more people and families in our area

who need our care.

Disease Specific Nursing Team We have created a Disease Specific Nursing Team with dedicated specialist nurses working in key areas of care to support

patients with End Stage Renal Failure, End Stage

Liver Disease, End Stage Respiratory Disease, Advanced Heart Failure and Dementia. Our Renal, Liver, Respiratory and Heart Supportive

Care Services aim to provide a high quality service

to manage the symptoms and provide support for

emotional and psychological needs that may occur as

a result of the illness. The role of the Dementia Lead Nurse is to adapt our

existing services in order to support patients with a

diagnosis of Dementia, and also educating staff and

other healthcare professionals to be able to provide

care specific to the needs of these patients.

More volunteer support Another new initiative we are exploring is Dementia

Companions to extend our growing Community

Companions service by giving additional training

to volunteers to support patients with Dementia.

We are also expanding our team of Volunteer Counsellors, Family Services Visitors and Ward

Volunteers who are part of a wider team of volunteers that support our clinical services.

Echo (end of life care hub for Coastal West Sussex) We are one of the leading partners of Echo, a new 24 hour a day, seven day a week, nurse-led

telephone support service for patients who have

been diagnosed with a life-limiting illness. Echo will

coordinate end of life care for people across our

catchment area and beyond. The service can be used by patients approaching

the end phase of their life as well as carers, families or healthcare professionals as one single

number to phone. Our specialist nurses and palliative care consultants provide 24/7 advice and

support to Echo nurses. Echo tel: 01903 254789 (select option 3) Echo email: [email protected]

Sharing our knowledge Our Education Team is currently supporting 28 care homes through various programmes. We are reaching nurses, care support

workers, managers and team members across the community to share our knowledge and best

practice of palliative care for the benefit of those

approaching the end of life.

Wellbeing at the heart of our service‘Wellbeing’ is the name we give to rehabilitative palliative care, enabling patients to maximise their physical and mental wellbeing, giving them the chance to have a better quality of life. During 2017 we are introducing a new Therapy and

Support Team. This team will work across all areas

of the service we provide. We will be exploring new

ways in which we can improve the way we support

some of our patients at an earlier stage of their

disease journey, through a focus on rehabilitation. This is very much geared towards a stronger focus

on helping patients maximise their independence

and ability to undertake everyday tasks that we all

quite possibly take for granted.

John Bush has benefitted from St Barnabas’ pioneering careJohn was diagnosed with Advanced Kidney Disease

two years ago and after deciding against dialysis

because of his age, 87, he was referred to the Renal

Supportive Care Service at St Barnabas House in

2016. Since then he has been supported by the

Renal Supportive Care Nurse Specialist and now

attends the Day Hospice. He said: “I’m absolutely amazed at how kind the

people here are and how wonderfully they treat

you. They can’t do enough for you. I’ve not had

anybody treat me with as much care before.“I attend the Day Hospice and it’s useful to see

other people in a similar position to myself and how

they’re coping. I don’t get out much so I’m able to

come here and have a social day. I’ve also been out

on the ManBus. We went to Haskins for a lunch, a

couple of pubs and Shoreham Airport. It’s great! You

get out, have a chat and a nice meal and you go to

different places.“My wife and I have helped with funding the hospice in the past, not knowing how much you

do. Now we know how much you do it has helped

us a great deal. Before that I didn’t know where

we would go. It’s a great relief to know that there’s

such a place to help us when times will get rough.”

Fundraising newsHit the Downs success!

On Sunday 7 May, 330 people took part in a brand new cycling event ‘Hit the Downs MTB’ for both St Barnabas House and Chestnut Tree House.

From individuals to cycling clubs and corporate teams, people of all ages and backgrounds took part in the event. Amongst the cyclists were Chestnut Tree House Patron, Sally Gunnell; our Director of Adult Nursing, Andy Burt; Finance Director, Max Caunhye; Trustee, David Pegler and our CEO, Hugh Lowson. Riders opted for either a 20 or 40-mile route, which started and ended within the grounds of Windlesham House School.

Jacob Garrod, 32, cycled 40 miles to raise money for St Barnabas House in memory of his father, Andrew Garrod, who received end of life care, having suffered from lung cancer.

Jacob said: “It was hard work. Some of the climbs were pretty horrendous but I didn’t get off and push. It was a brilliant event with an amazing route. Some of the scenery was stunning. It was a little bit chilly up on the top but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Peter Roberts signed up for the event to raise money for Chestnut Tree House, and cycled the 20-mile route in memory of his daughter,

Izzi, who sadly passed away last year. Hit the Downs MTB was Peter’s first fundraiser for Chestnut Tree House, and he has exceeded his £200 fundraising target by raising over £600 so far.

Lucy Bone, Events and Campaigns Fundraiser for St Barnabas and Chestnut Tree House, said: “We would like to thank all the cyclists who took part, and also the supporters and volunteers who helped out. It was an exciting day, with lots of happy and proud faces at the finish line. Sponsorship money is still coming in but we hope to raise around £20,000 for each hospice, which will cover three days of all care services provided by Chestnut Tree House and 12 days of Day Hospice care at St Barnabas House.”

Hugh Lowson, said: “I very much enjoyed taking part in our inaugural Hit the Downs MTB event. I did the ride to support the charity I work for. The work we do is really important and government funding is so small that we need events like this to support us. I’m really pleased that so many people turned up to support us and it was a really special day.”

This year, St Barnabas is asking ladies to ‘light up the night’ and cover themselves in fairy lights and glow products to light up Worthing seafront.

We are also delighted to announce that this year the route will take the ladies down Worthing pier, with all three routes enabling participants to walk around the pier for the first time!

Fundraising news

Over 550 women walked through the night in Eastbourne on Saturday 20 May in aid of Chestnut Tree House, raising a grand total of £62,288.

This year saw the introduction of a new 15 mile Urban Trek, a challenge that over 150 ladies took on. The 5 and 10 mile routes around Sovereign Harbour and the seafront were also popular, with walkers dressing to impress, covering themselves with bright flashing lights, crazy wigs and tutus. Among the sea of lights, there were smurfs, chickens and even a clown, all taking part and raising money for Chestnut Tree House.

The High Sheriff of East Sussex, Maureen Chowen, attended the event with her husband Michael Chowen. Mrs Chowen, who is also a Trustee of Chestnut Tree House and St Barnabas House, spoke to the ladies about how important the Night to Remember event is for Chestnut Tree House. “Your continued support in raising funds at Night to Remember is vital,” she told the walkers before they set off. “We are caring for children with life-shortening

conditions in communities across Sussex, making the support we have had tonight from people across the county all the more important and special.”

A big thank you to all our amazing volunteers and local businesses who kindly supported the event, and helped us raise such a fantastic amount.

Brave supporters of St Barnabas House abseiled down the Spinnaker Tower on Saturday 22 April to raise funds to help support the hospice.

A group of 44 people, many of whom were abseiling in memory of friends or family who have been cared for by the hospice, took on the 100 metre descent.

So far the event has raised around £15,000. Bella Cripps, Events Fundraiser said: “We are so grateful to everyone who took part in the

abseil day and helped to raise an incredible amount of money for the hospice.”

Due to the huge amount of interest we have had, we are looking into holding another day of abseiling in the near future. You can register your interest on our website by visiting www.stbh.org.uk/spinnaker-tower-abseil-day

We celebrated the opening of our latest Chestnut Tree House shop in Goring-by-Sea with a party. Among the guests was local celebrity DJ, Ambrose Harcourt. Ambrose is a Patron of Chestnut Tree House and has been supporting us since before the hospice was built. Past Mayor of Worthing, Cllr Sean McDonald, also attended together with trustees, staff, volunteers and supporters.

During the celebrations, Hugh Lowson awarded Retail Area Manager, Karen Bentley, with her five year long service badge. As well as being our Retail Area Manager, Karen also made and decorated the fabulous cake, which featured a teddy bear on the top. Our Chestnut Tree House mascot, Chester Bear, took a particular interest in this!

Ambrose spoke about his involvement over the years with Chestnut Tree House and proposed a toast to the new shop. He then cut the cake together with Shop Manager, Nikki Lambert.

Head of Retail, Jan Harper said: “We’d like to thank everyone who came along to help us celebrate the opening of our eleventh Chestnut Tree House shop, and make it such an enjoyable event.”

Gary Challis has been appointed as our new Warehouse Manager at the Retail Distribution Centre. Gary joined us as a driver in 2012 and stepped up to the role of Supervisor last year. We are delighted that he has now taken on this new challenge and look forward to working with him in his new role.

A donation with a history...Julie Angell, Assistant Manager at our St Barnabas Henfield charity shop, found a personalised wartime love poem written in a Common Prayer and Hymn Book recently donated to the shop.

She was so touched that she decided to share the poem on social media in an effort to reunite the book with the couple’s living relatives and the story was featured on the BBC website!

Julie has been in touch with the family and hopes to pass this little piece of history back to them.

Blooming marvellous!Jean, Mel and the fantastic volunteer team at our Chestnut Tree House shop in Billingshurst held a plant sale at the local village hall recently. Everyone involved collected plants and garden items. Volunteer Keith, grew a large range of plants, as well as making garden bird boxes and ornamental wishing wells to sell on the day. Everyone worked really hard to make the sale such a success and raised £456. Well done!
