Rabbi’s Message Many of us have multiple connections to the people and State of Israel. Some of us have relatives living there and some of us belong to organizations with a continuing relationship and presence. As Conservative Jews, our movement maintains a number of connections to the State and people of Israel. One of those is MERCAZ, the Conservative Zionist Party which represents us in the World Zionist Organization. Voting representation in the WZO is very much like the Israeli parliament, based on a proportion of votes received by its constituent member organizations in quadrennial elections. The results of these elections not only determine the number of seats, or voting members, in the WZO, but also influences the allocation of funds by the WZO to the programs and activities of its constituent groups. This is why our participation in MERCAZ is so critical. Ultimately, it will determine how much funding our Conservative movement institutions in Israel will receive to help operate their programs. This translates into Masorti congregations, Masorti youth programs and other activities. Beginning in January, we will have the opportunity to enroll as members of
MERCAZ and then vote in the WZO elections. We will be sending you the information as soon as it is available. We have not organized to do this in the past, but I am calling on all of us to take an active role this year. Last winter I had the opportunity to visit our sister Conservative institutions in Israel and learn how they are both serving Israeli families, children and youth and the impact that they are having in the religious pluralism debate currently raging in Israel. The issue of Religious Pluralism, ending the stranglehold of the Ultra-Orthodox over many areas of personal Jewish identity, is a critical issue for us and for the future of the Jewish State. Religious pluralism is the only path that will allow large number of Israelis to continue identifying as Jews and thus retain the 'Jewish' character of the Jewish State. I will be sharing my experience and my impressions during the month of January at our Shabbat Services and other programs. I hope you not only will attend to become better informed, but will join me in tangibly supporting our Conservative movement brothers and sisters in Israel. Rabbi Art Vernon

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
By request, below are the remarks I made during the Congregation Meeting on November 18th 2019: Thank you all for attending our Congregation Meeting tonight. On our agenda, are two important items: Voting on the proposed budget for 2020, and voting on the proposed contract for Todd Rosner as Cantor. Before we get into the legitimate business of this meeting, I would like to take this opportunity to make a few remarks. At this time, I am 16 months into my 24 month term as President of Congregation Shaaray Shalom, and approaching the horizon of my 5th year as an Executive Officer. I have, and continue to serve, on many committees within our congregation, including House, Security, Ritual, and Strategic Planning. Additionally, I participate with other volunteers in the logistics of running their committees of which I am not a part. Furthermore, I work with many individuals here who perform essential roles and tasks for us, without formal committees, as volunteers. It brings me great pleasure to see positive results from the efforts of those who dedicate their time, and donate their money, for the sole purpose of ensuring the lasting success of this wonderful synagogue. Without those people, we would be nothing. My prior mention of my involvement here was not to tout my personal volunteerism, but to show as an example what many people here do for all of us. Let us all, together, please give a round of applause for those in our midst today, who give for our benefit. We will not receive reports from the committees of the synagogue at this time since this is a special meeting. We will review the minutes from our last congregation meeting, and we will conclude with the votes for the two matters on the agenda.
I am pleased to report that overall, our shul is vibrant and healthy. While there are occasional problems with infrastructure, the building has been pretty cooperative and problem free as of late. As you know, we lose membership more quickly than we bring in, but we still manage to provide a tremendous amount of programming here for our pleasure and education. Our Kol Nidre Appeal did very well, hitting our targets. We managed to put together a Journal again this year, honoring several women of our shul. The Journal helped to bolster our income substantially. In addition, we have had several concerts and performances which have all been able to operate in the black. I know that this year there were many people who were upset over the holidays, with problems with our Yizkor Book, plaques, and yarzheit boards. Please know that we make our best effort to fully represent the desires and needs of the congregation, and sometimes we make mistakes. Yes, more oversight and review is needed, but please remember that there are few doing the work of many. I thank you all for continuing to be a part of this wonderful community. Please take an introspective look, to see how you can help us do more. Your time, and your dollars, is needed now as well as in our future. Once again, for those that already contribute, I thank you for your time and contributions. Alan Shamoun
The Rabbi's Discretionary Fund Most synagogue funds are used for the benefit of the synagogue, but the Rabbi's Discretionary Fund in par-ticular, is for the benefit of people in need in the community. Unfortunately, as the needs have increased, con-tributions to the Fund have decreased. Keep making the contributions that you have, but if you are able to give something additional for this Fund, please do. All donors are acknowledged, both with a card and in the Bulletin, unless you wish your donation to be anonymous. Thanks and best wishes.

SOME FACTS ABOUT TEVET Tevet Is in the Winter The tenth month on the Jewish calendar, Te-vet, occurs in the wintertime. In fact, the entire winter season is sometimes called tekufat (season of) Tevet n Jewish tradition. Tevet Always Has 29 Days The two months preceding Tevet (Cheshvan and Kislev) can each have either 29 or 30 days, de-pending on the year. From Tevet and onward, things are simple. Tevet has 29 days and Shevat has 30, es-tablishing a pattern of alternating months that contin-ues for the rest of the year. Chanukah Bleeds Into Tevet Chanukah begins on 5 Kislev and continues for eight days This means that the final few days of Chanukah extend into Tevet, an otherwise dreary and ordinary month. In the event that the first day of Te-vet is on Shabbat, this Shabbat is one of the few times when three Torah scrolls are removed from the ark during morning services. The Torah portuib if the week (Mikeitz) is read from the one scroll, the Rosh Chodesh reading is read from the second, and the Chanukah prtion is read from the third. The Birkat Hamazon for that Shabbat (Which includes additions for Shabbat, Rosh Chodesh and Chanukah) is also the longest of the year. Esther Was Taken To The Palace In Megillah Esther we read that Esther was taken to King Ahasuerus’s palace in the 10th month which is the month of Tevet. The Talmud explains that the month of Tevet was a particulaly opportune time, since the cold causes “the body to take pleasure from the body [of another].”
The Siege of Jerusalem Began Even before it got the name Tevet, when it was known simply as the tenth month, this was a signifi-cant time in Jewish history. In the tenth month, on the tenth of the month, Nebuvhadnezzar, the king of Baby-lonia came—he and this entire army—against Jerusa-lem, and encamped against it, and they built siege works around it. The Tenth Day of the Month Is a Fast Day The book of Zachariah tells us that four fast days will become days of “joy and gladness and good festivals” in the era of the Moshiach, including the fast of the tenth” a reference to the tenth days of Tevet (the tenth month). On this day the Jewish people mourn the destruction of Jerusalem, the result of the siege which began on that day. From daybreak to nightfall, no food or drink is consumed, and extra prayers are recited. Two Other Tragic Events Happened As Well Tradition tells us that the fast of the tenth of Tevet commemorates two other tragic events. On the eighth of Tevet, at the behest of Ptolemy of Egypt, the Torah was translated into Greek, marking a sharp decline of Jewish spirituality, the Torah now perceived as just another book of wis-dom in Ptolemy’s great library. The ninth of Tevet is the yahrzeit of Ezra the Scribe, the spiritual leader of the Jews who returned to the Land of Israel from Babylonia and rebuilt the Temple in Jerusalem. The death of this great leader, who left an indelible mark on Jewish life and obser-vance, was deeply mourned. Yet a single fast was de-clared for all three events, so the month would not be full of sadness and mourning.

Our Daily Minyan is in Need of Your Support Congregation Shaaray Shalom has a long history of supporting the many congregants who need to say Kaddish and observe yahrzeiten. Our constant pleas for participation sometimes work. We have a few new faces and some returning ones. All are welcome to spend a few minutes on Monday and Thursday mornings at 6:30 am and Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 8:30 am. This is another NO EXPERIENCE needed pro-gram and our clergy are always willing to help you learn and become more proficient at davening and maybe someday be a leader. We now conduct minyan services in memory and honor of David Weiss, -@'. We are looking to start a small list of those who can be on standby via TEXT messaging for any of the mornings. A group text would be sent only if we are missing #10 and if one person responds, the others would go on their way. It is a modern approach to the old fashioned apparatus on the wall and it can contact many people in a FLASH. Please contact Rich Selzer: 516 680 3710 / [email protected] or Leah Freeberg: 516 984-7782 / [email protected] to add your name to this list . Our minyan continues to be one of our strengths. Please help us continue it. Greetings From the Ritual Committee
At the December 5th Ritual Committee meeting we discussed attendance at Shabbat ser-
vices. While services begin at 9:00 AM sharp, we usually do not have a minyan of 10 people until well after 9:30 AM. The Committee discussed and decided not to amend the starting time of services. Instead we will publicize that the Torah service will begin at approximately 9:45 AM and encourage congregants to arrive on time so we can have less difficulty with the distribution of honors. We had a discussion of mentioning the matriarchs during repetition of the Ameida and Musaf services. We will continue with the Committee’s policy of leaving the mentioning of the matriarchs up to the person who is leading that portion of the service. The Menorah outside the Shul has been tested and is in working order. The light bulb for the Shamus needs to be replaced. The Cantor will look into this since he donated the bulbs last year. A sub-committee has been formed and will be meeting to discuss the daily minyonim. We continue to struggle in forming a minyan of 10 people. There is also concern about having a minyon for Kabbalat Shab-bat. The Committee recognizes and thanks all those who have helped with various aspects of the Shabbat services. The Rabbi informed the Committee that we will need 3 Torahs for Shabbat Chanukah. He will make sure all Torahs are rolled to their proper places. The Committee was informed that the Cantor and the Shul have agreed to a new contract which will begin in September 2020. The new contract calls on the Cantor to chant six haftorot during the upcoming con-tract year. The Cantor will be available to teach davening, haftorot, etc. to all interested congregants. Our next meeting is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, January 9, 2020.

MEN’S CLUB ON THE MOVE Although the winter has started the Men’s Club keeps moving on. We hope you enjoyed the holiday movie and Chinese dinner. The New Year 2020 brings many exciting things. The World Wide Wrap and Super Bowl and our Super Bowl Bonanza follows in February. Right after that we will celebrate Shabbat Across America . We continue to stay busy with programs and opportunities to gather together to share wonderful events If you have suggestions or things you want to promote by all means contact us. We continue to offer the opportunity to learn how to operate the many new hi tech products that your grandchildren buy you for Chanukah; the new cell phone or tablet, the hi tech fit bit that is supposed to get you off your tuchas and get you into shape or the digital photo frame. Don’t hesitate. We have nothing better to do on Sunday mornings. Just call or email one of the Men’s Club officers and we will be happy to get a team together for you and of course you are always welcome and encouraged to join our Sunday minyan.

FOOD FUND Dear Friends, “Baby it’s cold outside”. A lyric to an old song, but true nonetheless. In these winter months with bitter cold, it’s important to eat properly. Many cannot afford to do so. Your contributions go directly to purchase food for the Hempstead Inn, which serves 1,500 (yes, that's one thousand five hundred!) meals each week. Your check to the Temple office is all it takes to be an important partner in this mitzvah. Happy Secular New Year to you and yours. Shalom, Arbie Orenstein

SISTERHOOD
AH...THE GOOD OLD DAYS Remember when gasoline cost 32 cents a gallon? My mom paid 11 cents a quart for milk when she moved to Franklin Square in 1941, and it was delivered three times a week! I remember filling up a grocery bag (the paper kind) for $8.00. Now it can cost at least $50.00 for the same items. Why am I going on like this? The Sisterhood Board had a debate recently about raising prices for some of our events. It was heated; with some members wanting to keep costs the same as they were five years ago and others saying that was unrealistic. Anyone who buys groceries can give impassioned speeches on how the price of food has risen. So -- expect our luncheons and game nights to be a couple of dollars more in the coming year. We can't stop inflation, and we don't want to stop getting together. Look at it this way: These meetings will be the good old days someday. Case in point: We finally have pictures of our models and our past presidents from our Paid Up Membership Brunch last November. We were proud to celebrate Sisterhood's past and enjoyed how lovely our members looked modeling Chico's clothes. This was part of the "good old days" of 2019. Enter 2020. For starters, we're happy to welcome our new Membership Chair, Judy Stone. Congratulations, Judy. Looking ahead, we're gearing up to assemble Purim baskets early in March. We even have an entertainer, Rhonda Denet, a fantastic singer, lined up for our Mother's Day Brunch in May, although this year's brunch is creating a challenge for us. Unfortunately for us, and lucky for him, our Cuisinart donor, Fran Welner's son, has retired and will no longer be able to donate those wonderful Cuisinart appliances. We're asking our members for suggestions and maybe donations of items we can raffle off. If you have any ideas or resources, please contact Sisterhood. Beat The Clock winners will once again be revealed at the Pre-Mother's Day Brunch. Meanwhile, since it's only January, stay warm and safe and enjoy another New Year. We look forward to sharing it with you. Helene
