Other BC Bowlers include: Shannon Battles, Burnside LBC; Tim Mason, West Vancouver LBC; Steve Santana, Vancouver South LBC; and George Whitelaw, Juan de Fuca LBC. Cary reports that Bowls Canada has gone with a new format regarding the team . Players will now be on the team for three years - 2012-2014 . This will be a much better way of doing business for the National Team . Players will be able to schedule their family lives as well as their bowling lives . The Canadian Team will be attending many trips over the next three years: April 2012 - Tiger Bowls/China Open - Hong KongSept 2012 - No . American Challenge - Victoria, BCNov 2012 - World Champ'ships - Adelaide, Aust .April 2013 - Tiger Bowls/China Open - Hong Kong2013 - Asia Pacifics Championships - TBA 2013 - Atlantic Rim Championships - TBAApril 2014 - No . The National team coach, Lachlan Tighe, is from Australia . "There will be a lot of new things for us to develop . We must prepare a monthly report for Lachlan regarding our goals, our drills, and our results, as well as our training during the off-season . I am really looking forward to playing in Victoria in September . That is the North American Challenge - Canada versus the United States over a four-day tournament ."

Report from John Speers,Coaching - Bowls BC Welcome to the 2012 season, we look forward to an exciting and busy time . Two Club Coach Courses were held this year in the LowerMainland, at the North Vancouver Lawn Bowling Club on April 16 and 21, 2012 . If the Board ap-proves we would like to make a trip to the Interior and put on one course there . The NCCP has upgraded its database once more . I attended a course via the internet on how to navigate the new system . One of the new features is the ability to enter the names of those taking the course directly into their database right after the course is completed, a savings of time and paperwork . I have had some inquiries about certification certificates. The NCCP has not sent out any cards or certificates for the last two years. If you want to view your transcript, you can do that by going to the Website at: www.coach.ca/ Navigate to the check certification page. Enter your CC# and your last name and click VIEW and your info should appear . If you do not know your CC# you can contact me at [email protected]/ I have a record of all numbers for Lawn Bowls BC. You are supposed to be able to print a card for your wallet. When I tried, it didn't work. Looks like they still have some work to do . Before I close I would like to thank my fellow coaches Ron Leslie, Bev Johnson, and Anne Jackson, for all their help in the past season . I lookforward to working with them again this year . If you have any questions at all about any coaching matter please don't hesitate to get in touch . I will do my best to help you .

Respectfully submitted, John Speers

Coaching and OfficiatingReport from Nick Watkins,Officiating Bowls BC

This year we have two new(*) district officiating coordinators and two who are carrying on .Bowls South Islands – Nick Watkins, POC ChairNorth Island / Powell River – Jeff Dixon*Vancouver and District – George Cubiss*Interior – Al BelliveauThe primary duties of the district coordinators: • Organize umpires for provincial championships and district events being held in the district• Re-test umpires as they need to be recertified (presently a 3-year cycle)• Maintain a database of district umpires and dis-tribute umpires’ cards• Conduct markers clinics and rules and measuring clinics• Assess prospective new umpires (currently on hold)• Collect officiating reports from each umpire at the end of the yearThere are very few umpires who will require recer-tification this year.Officiating Priorities: I am now the Chair of the National Officiating Committee and my top priority has been to work with committee members on the development ofa new Training and Certification Program for Umpires . Work is currently underway, and it is still too early to make any firm predictions on when the program will get underway . However, it is my goal to initiate the program this bowling season . The NOC is also preparing resources for the training of markers . I will be conducting three markers’ clinics in Victoria late April / early May using the new course material for these clinics . I have been in contact with Alan Stirling from the

Bowls BC 'Emerging Athlete' Program This is the second year the Emerging Athlete Program has been in effect, under the guidance of the EAP coaches, led by Stephen Forrest, Bowls BC Coordinator of Athlete Development. The basic aim of the EAP is for BC to domi-nate the medals at the Canadian Championships byimproving the competitive skill levels of BC’s representatives . The focus will be to identify and develop gifted and talented bowlers . Although the 19 – 50 year age is preferred, no age restriction will exist for this program . Coach development will also be a priority as

committed athletes need knowledgeable and at-tentive coaches to guide and support these athletes during their practices and competitions . The program needs 16 students maximum . Volunteers are also required - four to eight expe-rienced players for one or both days to assist with play . Volunteers please contact Stephen Forrest at [email protected] - phone 604-484-5516 or 250-731-6375 . The EAP will only work if clubs are aware of the program and actively recruit new members .For a complete outline of the program go to the Bowls BC website at: www.bowlsbc.ca

Ann and David Mathie, Bowls BC Direc-tors to Bowls Canada, attended the Bowls Canada meeting in Ottawa on February 4th and 5th of this year . They submitted a lengthy report of the meet-ing . Here are the highlights: Governance... Did not go through at this meeting, as the Provinces must have 60 days before taking a vote . All issues raised by the Prov-inces will be looked into, including the ones BC e-mailed about . For a complete explanation, go to the Bowls Canada website and click on "Cana-dian Bowls Newletter ." Singles Indoor Championships . . . The ex-pense of attending this event, and billeting, were discussed . These are issues that BC will have to look into . Bowls Canada will keep the format the same for the next two years after which they will review to see if they will continue . Juniors 2012 . . . . Provinces can hold their championships but if the junior who finishes 10th wants to go and his parents are willing to take him then he can attend, as Bowls Canada has made this an open competition . Bowls Canada would like to introduce a new tournament called Forster Lang Pairs, in which Juniors and the Under 25’s will be paired up together, This will be done by a Blind draw for teams . This tournament will be discussed with the Kelowna LBC. If Kelowna is not willing to do it then it will not go for this year . Gary Robinson is contacting Alan Stirling at the Kelowna LBC about this decision. National Singles . . . In 2013 this will be a stand alone event, at a different time as the Ma-jors. For the first year it will be held in Regina. It will be an open tournament in which anyone in Canada can enter . It also will be a medal competi-tion and the winner will go to the Champion of Champions . Triples Entry . . . .In 2013 Bowls Canada would like to bring a triples entry into the Majors . This was not taken to a vote as the BC Direc-

"In 2001 I was asked by Ed & Joanne Grobler if I would be interested in tak-ing over the position of Director of Op-erations for Bowls BC . I accepted the position, not think-ing that I would still be holding that same position in 2011 ."Originally every-thing was strange to me as it was nothing

like I had experienced in South Africa . However I will always be very thankful to Sheila Buttars for the advice and assistance that she gave me during this time . After a few years I decided that a Condi-tion of Play should be introduced so that all the players understood exactly what we were trying to achieve and what was expected from them . "With the assistance of Gary Robinson, we drew up a Guideline Program . Each year we up-dated these Guidelines to cover any controversial points that we had encountered during the previ-ous year . I hope that the players have found this an answer to some questions that they may have had, and all I ask is that they abide by these Guidelines thereby making things easier for all concerned . "There have always been two schools of thought regarding the Format that should be used to determine the winners of the various Provincial Play Downs. I have favored the Round Robin/Play Offs, simply because it offers more games to each player, and there is no doubt in my mind that this is the reason that the number of entries into the Pro-

vincials has been increasing each year . I hope that this will be the case in the future when the format is changed to Double Knock Out, as it is imperative that more new bowlers must be encouraged to enter the Provincials, otherwise the game will stagnate . "During my term of office several new events have been introduced, one of which is the Bowls BC Sponsored Tournament . This has been well received by the various Districts over the last few years, and the number of players from the Inland has risen from nil to 12 entries in 2011, which indicates that more players are now becoming inter-ested in playing against stronger opposition, and not just against the same players each week . "There have been times when we have been faced with difficult decisions to make, however, with the assistance of the Provincial Games Com-mittee we have always looked at the general picture before making a decision . I would like to thank all the members who have served on this Committee with me, and the manner in which they have carried out their respective duties . "Over the last three years I have also organized both the Provincial and Canadian Indoor Singles at the PIBC. This was new to me; however with the assistance of Mary Anne Gillies and others, we managed to hold successful events . "In conclusion I would like to thank all those who have assisted me over the last 10 years, and this includes my wife Val who was my right hand (wo)man for the first seven years. To all the players who I have met playing in the Provincials, and who have become great friends, I wish you all the best in the future and I hope you continue enjoying playing in the Provincials . Good Bowling to all ."

Don Law

We'll miss you Don! In January of this year, we received the following notice from Don Law: "After giving the matter much thought, I have decided that the time has come for me to relinquish my position of Director of Operations on the Bowls BC Board. I have held this position since 2002, and have always given my best to running the Provincial Games over the last 11 years. So as to eliminate any confusion will you please make my decision made known to all concerned, once a replacement for my position has been found."

Big changes ahead for Bowls Canadators insisted on taking it back to their Province for discussion . Since we are running the Majors in 2013 it would be an extra 40 athletes to feed and transport to the events . I do not think that this is a move that is favourable with the Provinces, as some of the Prov-inces don’t have the players to field such entries. National Mixed Pairs . . . Now scheduled for Sept 17 – Sept 24, 2012 . $50 entry fee... will remain in effect until it is brought to the floor as a motion again . It was passed 11 – 6 . Ont, BC, MB, Que and PEI against . All fees collected will go into General Revenue due to the decrease in membership . The $50 entry feea col-lected in 2009 – 2011 will be used for a test match for National team members in Scotland in 2013 . National Senior triples in Regina...There will be no evening games . LTAD Phase 1 booklet . . . Given to us for pre-view. It will go to the printers next week with final changes and hopefully it will be in the Provinces hands by start of season . It looks great! Coaching... Competition Introduction Pro-gram (old level 1) is coming out soon . Competition Development (old level 2) out later this year. Bowls Canada Bouligrin . . . A name change was brought up for discussion. The Quebec Director was asked to take it back to her Province and see if there were any ideas of what the name should be . Bowls Canada would like this determined before the Governance Report comes out . Dress code... This was brought to the floor as there is nothing in the laws of the sport about clothing requirements . Bowls Canada did not want to address this and said it was up to the Provinces to implement a Dress Code. Ontario implements a dress code for its players . Newsletter... The Bowls Canada Newsletter has been reinstated . Called "Extra Ends", it will be published four times a year . If you have a story, or anything you would like to have printed, please send an e-mail to: [email protected]

Each year the District Associations affliated with Bowls BC are asked to select someone in their midst who deserves special recognition as a bowler who has made a dif-ference. Each year the Semi-Annual General Meeting is the occasion when the nominees are paid tribute for their selfless contributions. Vancouver and District did not have a volunteer award in 2011. The other four recipients were unavailable for the SAGM, but District representatives accepted the awards in their absence.

Fred Dunlop has been a lawn bowler for the past 30 years . With over 29 years at the Powell River LBC, and a year at Beban LBC, he has been an outstanding member of his club, and our sport .

Fred has worked tire-lessly for the past 30

years promoting and supporting lawn bowling in his community . He is an outstanding fundraiser - in 2011 he was responsible for single-handedly raising over $50,000 for the celebration of Powell River Lawn Bowling Club’s 90th anniversary . Fred is also one of his club’s prime recruiters . One year he was responsible for 11 new members joining PRLBC. He is at the green every evening to assist new members, and spends his winters planning for the following bowling season . He introduces high school classes to the sport of lawn bowling, and is always looking for ways to attract new and younger members . Always willing to lend a helping hand, Fred is ever available, whether the job is large or small, from greens upkeep to clubhouse maintenance . For his outstanding devotion and support to his club, and our sport, for the past 30 years, we are proud to have Fred Dunlop as our Volunteer of the Year . Bravo, and thank you Fred!

Maureen has been a member of the McArthur Park LBC for five years. She has held the position of Vice President, Presi-dent and is now Past President . In addition she is currently commit-tee head of the Crib Club at McPark . Maureen also floor curls twice a week, chairs the crib club ev-

ery Tuesday, volunteers with Hospice and volunteers at the Kamloops Fish and Game Club . Whew! When does this human dynamo have time to lawn bowl? Nevertheless, Maureen loves the game of lawn bowling . However, she says, the real pleasure is lawn bowling with a wonderful group of fine folks. During bowling season she volunteers to help with the blind bowlers on Thursdays . This has shown her what the sport of lawn bowling is all about . “To roll a slightly radially asymmetrical ball (bowl) clos-est to a smaller white ball (jack) with limited or no sight . . .they are amazing people ." Maureen thanks everyone for the honour of being named Volunteer for the Interior .

Tom and Marcia have been members of the Nanaimo Lawn Bowling Club for the past ten years . Together they have managed and organized the BC Blind Sports Lawn Bowling Team when travelling out of the Province, and they have assisted in organizing regional and provincial tournaments . Tom is a sighted sport guide who directs a blind lawn bowler, giving visual information to the bowler so he will be able to participate in practices and tour-naments getting all the information a sighted person would have when playing the game of lawn bowls . Marcia is a sighted sport guide who directs a bowler with low vision, and makes sure the bowler is giving all the information she needs to participate in the sport of lawn bowling . Together Tom and Marcia make our lawn bowl-ing program a huge success . They bring their valued knowledge and experience to the game, as well as their willingness to teach and promote lawn bowling for those who are blind or visually impaired . They have both given so much to our grass routes and competitive programs and we value their dedica-tions and contributions . Tom and Marcia truly love the sport of lawn bowling .

Our apologies. A photo of Tom and Marcia was not available at press time.
