Notes! from the President

Paul

I am grateful to have the opportunity to continue to serve the band as President and to assume the duties of an unofficial manger, as Greg Heltman so often acknowledges at our concerts. These notes provide one opportunity I have to catalogue the impressive support that the band has from the community, our audience and from our members. We are honored to perform annually at the four national holidays. In addition, at the Rotary Club Pancakes on the Plaza July 4, five volunteers from the band have helped with the pancakes after we performed. We have 42 businesses donating in one way or another. For example, Allegra provides all of our concert programs at no charge thanks to Vic Perry. In brief, we serve the community and the community is serving us – a reciprocal relationship as I see it. Thank you to all for your support. 2015 was a banner year in many ways.

I want to call attention to the Nominating Committee, band members Peg Johnson, Nancy Scheer, and Jack Sullivan, for their work in putting together a slate for the election of the 2016 Board of Directors. The new Board was elected on December 1, 2015.

The out-going Board members are Vice President Ruth Stiles, saxophone and Secretary Christine Beekman. Ruth chose to retire from her position on the Board after two years and will continue as a member of the alto sax section.  As VP she handled all of the band’s correspondence acknowledging donations from many donors, more donors than we have ever seen; she also organized the post-concert dinners following our Holiday Concerts. I cannot overlook that her husband, Charles, was a volunteer at many of our concerts.

Christine Beekman, member of the flute section since 2013, was on the board for one year and hosted two board meetings at her home. She is an avid cyclist and one of the band members who rode for the band. She is transferring to her new assignment with the National Park Service in Oregon at Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument.

I am looking forward to our 2016 season. We have a record number of 70 musicians on our roster to call upon for our performances!

A Member ! ! ! of Note S T A C C A T O

Welcome New Members!

Laura Quintana, flute Jessica Ramirez, clarinet, Max McGrael, percussion Steve Brinegar, horn.

Brian Norris grew up in and around Springfield, MA and except for travel and college lived almost of his life there. Hegraduated from Dartmouth in 1971 with a BA in Psychology and while there played with the Dartmouth Community Symphony and the Wind Ensemble as well as a number of smaller groups. He taught in Springfield Public Schools for about 40 years as a MIddle and High School Math teacher and a Guidance Counselor. One the perks of his job was the opportunity to meet his wife, Catherine, who was working as  a Special Ed Vocational teacher at the time.

He had a chance in the 90's to relocate to Santa Fe and take a job with the Los Alamos School system but just wasn't ready for the change at that time. However, he had to promise Catherine that when he retired they would definitely make the move out here. So in 2011 we packed the car and headed out by way of Southern Canada, Montana, Idaho, until they reached New Mexico, spending time in Albuquerque and Pojoaque before arriving in Santa Fe. After relocating to Colorado Springs for health reason, they eventually settled into the city different (or Santa Fogey as he likes to call it) for the second time last July. Now he is enjoying retirement and looking to do some tutoring on the side. In junior high, Brian was part of a group of very good clarinetists who were never going to be better than the excellent players in our class and the one behind us. “The band director took us aside and gave us the bad news that we would most likely be playing second for all of high school. So, he made one of us play the Soprano, one the Alto, one the Bass Clarinet, and I got the Bassoon. As the saying goes, some are born to play the bassoon, some choose to play it, and some (like me) have it thrust upon them,” he says. But it worked out great, as he has had opportunities that he probably wouldn't have had without the switch -- high school All District Band and Orchestra and the All State Band.

He also had the great fortune to study with Emil Hebert who played in orchestras all over Europe and the US but whose great claim to fame was all the work he did providing background music for commercials and TV shows. If you can remember the amazing bassoon parts in the TV series Mission Impossible - that was Emil.

After college, Brian mostly got involved with community theater "

appearing in dozens of plays and musicals, even once directing a production of The Mikado. Later he returned to playing the bassoon for 17 years as principal in the Holyoke (MA) Community Symphony. Of the Band, he says,“My short time with the SFCB has been very enjoyable both musically (haven't seen these charts since high school!) and socially - band members have been easy to approach and fun to get to know.” He looks forward to the many rewarding concerts and activities coming up.

They care about each other. . .After the Holiday Concert, some Band members surprised Bethany Morse with gifts of money to help her prepare for her baby, due in late February.

Some of them pictured; Athena Beshur, Bob Jones, Bethany, Amy McNillan, Jenny Otto, Peg Johnson, Barry Feldman, Brian Johnson, and Dave Dennison from the clarinet section.

Also in January, the flute/oboe section gave Bethany a baby shower.

SFCB members are generous with their volunteering and in sharing their talents. . . Every Fourth of July, the Band members gather at the Plaza to help the community kick off the early morning part of the day’s celebrations.

Giving -- Above and Beyond!

The High Desert Sax Quartet has played several gigs around Santa Fe and donated their income to the band. Great generosity from these four dedicated band members! Pictured l to r: Cesario Quintana, David Dennison, Ruth Stiles and Lewis Sinoff.

Confederate Buglers at the Battle of Glorieta In 1987 a mass grave of Confederate soldiers was located in Glorieta including the bones of thirty-one soldiers; the gravesite was initially found when Kip Siler was digging the basement for his new home. Among the bones were those of G.N. Taylor, a 42 year old bugler for the Confederates. His bones now lie in a mass grave at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.

“G. N. Taylor was a bugler in Company H of the 7th Texas Volunteer Cavalry. At 42, he was the oldest Confederate soldier killed at Glorieta and buried on the battlefield on March 28, 1862. He was a white male approximately 5 feet, 6 inches in height and between 35 and 45 years in age. Dental analysis found nine gold fillings distributed across seven teeth, indicating access to professional dental care. A .58 caliber “Minié ball” bullet was found in the pelvic area, suggesting the subject may have died from a bullet to the groin or abdomen. Archaeologists speculate the retention of his teeth may have been critical to his effectiveness as a bugler.”

Remains of G.N. Taylor

Paraphrased information put together by Paul Pease who attended a lecture by Mathew J. Barbour, at the New Mexico History Museum on January 17, 2016. Archaeologist Barbour is the Director at the Jémez Historic Site.

Photo copied from HAVING FOUGHT AND DIED TOGETHER: EXAMINING THE BATTLE OF GLORIETA PASS CONFEDERATE MASS GRAVE By Matthew J. Barbour, Historical Archaeologist, Office of Archaeological Studies

Another Confederate Bugler, Francisco Perez, survived the battle and returned to his home in Mexico. He later came to Santa Fe with other musicians and formed Le Banda de Santa Fe in 1865; and there you have the legacy for the Santa Fe Concert Band and a bit of history that you may not have known about the Battle of Glorieta.

In 1992 the band moved its weekly rehearsals from the College of Santa Fe to the Salvation Army where we have been rehearsing ever since. We thank the Salvation Army for their generous support. Thirty-three band members performed at the concert in 1992 and of that total, seven are still with the band and will perform this April 8, 7:00 pm at St. Francis Auditorium at the New Mexico Museum of Art, Santa Fe.
