"Mom!" hollered Sarah "Stacy's into my stuff again!"

"I am not!" returned 4-year-old

Stacy, picking up a bottle of nailpolish.

"Then what are you doing with mynail polish?" Sarah pointed to asmall pool of pink polish on the car-pet.

"I wanted to see what it smelledlike," Stacy said innocently "And itsmelled so bad that it made medrop it."

Sarah glared at her little sister.

"Well clean it up!"

"No! You're old anyway. You canclean it up."

"Eleven is not old!" stormed Sarah

"Kids!" called Mrs. Dawson "Comeon in the kitchen for breakfast!"

They raced down the hallway, asStacy shoved her foot out, thenlooked down at Sarah sprawled onthe floor.

"It was an accident." she sneered

Sarah was too excited to be madanymore. Today was the Christmasparty at school. She'd been waitingsince forever for it to come. Shedecided that she wasn't going to letStacy spoil this day. She'd actuallyget to be away from her for a fewhours. Stacy made a face at her,but Sarah ignored it.

"This is delicious, Mom!" saidSarah, pouring syrup over herthird waffle.

"Sarah," began Mrs. Dawson "I

want you to take Stacy to theparty."

Sarah froze. Syrup kept pouring

out and made a puddle in herplate.

"Mom!" she exclaimed "You can'tmean it!"

"Yes, I can mean it." her mothersaid firmly. She took the syrupbottle out of her daughter'shands and snapped the lid on.

"I have an important meeting

this afternoon," she explained"and I can't take Stacy with me."

Sarah thought that the whole skywould come crashing down onher. Take Stacy with her? Impos-sible.

"I'll drive you guys over there,"Mrs. Dawson went on, "and dropyou off."

The drive to the school was notwhat Sarah had been waiting for.Stacy was in the back seat, bab-bling non-stop. Sarah squintedher eyes shut, and tried to blockout Stacy's voice.

We're here!" Mrs. Dawson an-nounced cheerfully.

Sarah couldn't imagine how shecould act so cheerful. She enteredher classroom, which had beendecorated with streamers andballoons, with Stacy right behindher. Sarah looked around. Mightas well get something to drink. She leaned over the refreshmenttable, trying to reach the punch.

" I want some too!" said Stacy, jumping up and down. Sheknocked into Sarah, causing her

to fall forward into the cake in front of her.

Sarah got up. From the waist up, shewas covered in purple frosting. Every-one around was snickering. Making adash for the restrooms, she tripped on

someone's foot. She went flying, land-ing flat on her face.

"Sorry." Stacy was smiling

After washing the cake out of her hair, and wiping off her clothes and face, shewent back to the classroom. One of thegirls was showing off her newest pieceof jewelry. A gold ring. Sarah made aface. Janet was always talking aboutthe expensive clothes and jewelry that

she owned. She took the ring off of herfinger to show it around, but someonedropped it. They watched it roll underthe bookshelf. Janet tried to get it out,but her hand wouldn't fit through.Soon almost the whole class was tryingto get it, but everyone's hand was toobig.

"My hand can fit through there!" de-clared Stacy.

She got down on her hands and knees, reached under the bookshelf, andpulled the ring out. Sarah felt proud of her little sister as someone announced,

"What would we do without youStacy?"

Sarah smiled. Maybe Stacy wasn't sobad after all.

“What did you think this brush willconjure to life?” he murmured, scarcely sparing me a glance.

I sat stiffly in my seat, holding my

posture correctly.

“This is for practice though, is itnot?” I made as if to rise from myseat. I didn’t want to be the mainobject in a painting to be sold to aneager buyer. I didn’t want my face tobe recognized. I’m one of the quieterones in my family—Gawaine and Iare. He is the artist, and I am thewriter. Together, we make a greatteam. Sometimes, he assists mewith lyrical prose and I pay my debt

to him by sitting as his model. Ithelps us both, really. It helps methink…and him to well… paint.

Gawaine shrugged his shoulderswithout bungling his painting. Itwas a half-sketched charcoal pictureof me. “Who knows? This may beone of my greatest paintings ever.”

I knew what he meant. There weresome things in life that couldn’t beretrieved. Though memories can becalled back to life, they couldn’t bechanged and altered. Such was alsothe way with art. Once the paint’son there, it’s on there. In a way, Isuppose painting is Gawaine’s wayof expressing life in his reservedway. Not born to be a braggart, Ga-waine would rather let his accom-plishments boast for themselves. Hewas a humble man, silent and with-drawn.

A muggy breeze maneuvered its wayinto the stuffy room by way of theopen window. I looked hopefully to-wards that small patch of azure.Gawaine caught my train of sightand smiled. His nimble fingersdropped stiffly to his side. Theyfumbled with the ends of his apronstrings. These were ways to charac-terize an artist. Their fingers couldnever remain still. This impetuous

lull in his drawing had him goinghysterics already.

I winced, hoping I hadn’t botched uphis train of thought.

His eyebrows raised once in questionat the canvas as if he expected to betold what to draw. Sensing I peeredon from behind him, he shot me aquick glance.

“I have sketched you well… Thebackground however is less prefer-able.” He turned back to his easeland frowned. Again his fingersleaped up to stroke his stubble. Hewas ever proud of it. It was his first

signs of manhood.

I peeked over his squared shoulders, studying the curve of his forehead. They appeared vexed. I looked at thepainting. It was the mightiest pretti-est thing I’d ever seen. I told him so.

His eyes sought mine in a passingglance. “You think so?” A smilecurved his lips into a generous “U”. Itwas the first time in a long while I’dseen him so blithe. Usually, hewhined over his paintings. Same as Idid writing.

Art and writing—they went together.

I knew.

“No, no.” He shook his head, placingthe chalk with an impatient “clank”on the ledge. “What would you knowof art?” he asked desperately. Heleaned against the table, one hand

over his heart as if he were about tohave a seizure any moment.

I raised my eyebrows quizzically athim.

“You’ve barely even started.”

I picked up the charcoal without spo-ken permission from him and turnedit in my fingers, inspecting it from

Page 4 The BT4T Buzz

As the Heart Commands (By Merry) (Continued on Page 9)every angle.

“Nothing wrong with this one.” Iput it down on the ledge.

I scanned the canvas. Its blankenormity glared back at me. Iquickly averted my gaze. The boldlines that sketched me stood outimmensely from the white void.“And the drawing…” I gesturedwith one hand. “It’s begging foryou to finish it.”

I extended my hand for his. Hegrudgingly allowed me to take it.Black charcoal had embedded itstrademark into every single inch

of his palm. I rubbed away atsome to reveal pink skin. I tracedthe lines. “See, nothing wrongwith this as well. Your handboasts at great skill.” I let it dropback to his side.

“Sister,” he began.

I gently pressed a finger againsthis lips to silence him. “I’m notdone yet,” I whisper.

I sink my head against his heart. It beat in perfect cadence. I tappedit. “Perfect rhythm.”

“And…” I reached high to feel hisforehead. He’d been drawing withgreat fervor again. His foreheadwas damp with sweat, but therewere no hints at fever or any of the kind.

“Now”—I retreated from him a

few steps—“look back at yourpainting. What do you see?”

Confusion clouded his misty blueeyes. Then a medley of emotionsscudded across his irises like theway clouds would momentarilysail over the sun. At last, despairwas the only feeling left in hiseyes. The more he took in of hispainting, the more that despair

Samantha—Intro (By Writer’s Corner)Samantha- a cut piece out of my beingworked on novelSamantha woke up early. She checked herwatch. Six o’ clock. It was the perfect time. She crept downstairs, being careful not tostep on the last one, because this onecreaked. She got to the kitchen. The smallbut messy kitchen was silent. She quietlyopened the door and crept inside. Slowly shetook out a stool from underneath the table. This was her favorite stool; she always usedit during meal times. Trying to not makeany noise, she moved it so that it was di-rectly under the cupboard. She stood on thestool reaching up towards the opening…

“SAMANTHA!”

Taken by surprise, she fell of the stool andlanded with a crash on the ground. Turningaround she saw Mrs. Trent standing there

with her hands on her hips.Samantha prepared herself forwhat was coming.

“What were you thinking girl? Iwasn’t born yesterday! Youthink you are allowed to doanything! Everyday somethinghappens! You are a disgrace!”

“I only…” Samantha started.

“You are going to clean up to-day, and you will go up to bedearly! At six I want you in bed!Do you hear me?” Mrs. Trentasked

Samantha nodded, and withouta word, turned around andheaded upstairs to the dormito-

World Talent Showcase

Euthalia, the Prologue (By Euthalia)If anybody told you that life for a nineteen year old with a love for libraries and history can be a tedious affair, that somebody could never have been more wrong. I am living proof. It all began, it seems, at my birth whenthrough eyes misty with joy and relief, my mother saw a blue mark in the shape of a moon just below my leftshoulder. She was assured that it was a normal birthmark and never gave it a second thought. As I grew up Itoo became intrigued by my “extraordinary” mark. As a child I would imagine it held secrets, vast and won-

drous. I clung to them like bees to honey in the hope that I was somehow different from the others. I wouldclimb on chairs and jump, praying that I would remain suspended in the air. I would close my eyes tightly andpicture myself someplace else, imagining the breeze on my face as I traveled to my magical destination only tofind myself sitting in my room. I would make up stories of a princess who would come to take me away to mykingdom in a fairy land. Those around me, adults especially, would openly encourage me while behind my backthey smiled that all-so-knowing smile. She’ll get over it, it’s just a phase. They’d say. I heard them even thoughthey thought I didn’t. My Jenna is always singing on tables, thinking she’s on stage! I would scoff at her ridicu-lous remarks. Her Jenna, I could bet, didn’t have a blue birthmark in the shape of a moon. But it was useless. Ifrequently asked my mother about it. Time passed and she still could not give me any answers, any suitableones at least. When my innocence faded with the comings and goings of the world, I abandoned all hope of everbeing “special” and I came to accept the mark as a “peculiar” if not downright strange characteristic of my body.Dull perhaps, but still strange.

I would never have dreamt, not in all my wildest dreams what that mark would get me through. I find it diffi-cult even now. It’s hard to believe something after a childhood’s worth of denials and crushed hopes that such athing can occur. It all goes to show how little we know of the vast expanse that exists out there and how muchwe should constrain our arrogance in the face of an innocent belief that fantastical phenomena are possible andthat extraordinary worlds are closer to us than we think...This is my story. Whether it is true or not is up to you, I suppose, to decide. And to all those who will scoff afterreading this, I tell them to close their eyes and to strain themselves so they might perhaps hear their name be-ing echoed somewhere. For this is how it all started, after my resignation that my dull blue mark could evermean anything as fantastical as I had often prayed it would be when I was young just before I fell asleep.

Epic By Conor Kostick (By Mariah) About this book:

Pages: 384Published: 2007

If you like: Video Games

Fantasy“Avatar”

You may like this book.

Epic takes place 1,000 years after the fall of Earth. One million in-habitants now live on a nearby planet, founded by Earth’s survivors. Cen-tral Allocations (C.A.), the new government, outlaws all forms of violence. To settle disputes, the people play a game called “Epic.”

Erik, a 14-year-old boy, seeks revenge on C.A. for sending his father,

Harald, into exile on the Isle of Roftig for using violence by defending hiswife some 20 years earlier.

Erik enters “Epic” as a female swashbuckler by the name of Cin-della. His friends, B.E., Injibord, Bjorn, and Sigrid, join him in the battlearena. They are known as the Osterfjord Players from the Hope District. Itis a treacherous journey to the arena, meeting a dark elf, Anonnemuss, onthe way, who joins them in their battle for good. They meet other playersand non-player characters (NPC). They try to stay away from the vampireand the Executioner, an inpenetratable character created by C.A., who areafter them for trying to help Harald escape.

Erik and his friends find a glitch in the strategic movements of the

Red Dragon that lives in a cave at the edge of an imaginary town that liesin “Epic.” Killing the dragon, they find a treasure worth millions of Bezants(the currency in “Epic”). With their newly found wealth, they plan to defeatC.A. conclusively, ending their corrupt government and forming a democ-racy.

Will they succeed, or will they all be killed by the Executioner in“Epic” and in real life?

I recommend Epic to older teens because of its use of advanced vo-cabulary. The events created suspense and intrigue, and everything startedto make sense towards the ending, which tied it all together; Epic lackspredictability. Some parts, however, were confusing, especially the battle

scene at the end of the book; too many things were going on at once.Overall, however, the book, Epic , is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece

that intrigues the reader as a full line of unexpected events occur. I wouldrecommend this book to anyone that loves action and vivid descriptions.Epic emits a sense of adventure and amazement. It enters uncharted terri-tory as one of the first books of its kind as it paints a picture in your mindof a brave new world.

I rate this book: 9

As the Heart Commands (Continued)was nurtured. Soon, I saw anger inlaid with annoyance.

“What do you see?” I repeated.

“I see a big gunk of mess,” he blurted out painfully.

“Ah-ha!” I say, sounding much like an apocalyptic fortune teller. “The remedy lies in here.” I place a hand overmy heart and tapped my brain. “Though your heart dreadfully seeks a way to improve your painting, your minddoubts. Your heart controls your fingers. But while it is preoccupied with fighting off pessimistic thoughts sentby way of your mind, the fingers are left listless.”

Realization dawned in his eyes. “I see,” he said slowly.

But I wasn’t done yet…

“Don’t you see? Art is what spills out from the soul. And where is the soul?” I asked, pausing.

“The heart.” He clasped his two hands in front of him.

I nodded. “Exactly. And because your mind questions your heart, it gradually takes over your artwork and…that is what you come up with. When that doesn’t happen”—I waved at the paintings hung in a circle aroundus—“look at the miracles you can produce.”

His pain was easy to understand. His feelings were easy to infiltrate. Why? I’d felt the same way before. A partof me sighed in deep, taking in oxygen. I felt relaxed. How come I’d never sounded this intelligent before? MaybeI was doing just as Gawaine had been doing all along. I looked at him, plunged deep into thought.

“Did that solve anything?” I ask bluntly.

“Yes,” he smiles at me, a genuine smile, “thank you.”

I dip my head.

My footsteps walk in a designated path towards my room where the newly sharpened pens and blank paperawait. I am prepared.

Starbucks’ Addicts (By Mariah) Are you a Starbucks addict? Many people are and don't evenknow it. Many people also don'teven know that caffeine, themain ingredient in the coffee is adrug.

Caffeine is a stimulant drug.Stimulants are used to increasewakefulness, and alertness inpeople. This may sound like agood thing, but there are sideaffects if you consume too muchcaffeine. Too much caffeine, espe-cially over an extended period of time, can lead to physical addic-tion, and mental conditions in-

cluding: nervousness, irritability, anxiety, tremulousness, muscletwitching, insomnia, and heartpalpitations.

Starbucks coffee is highly addictive. It has a short energy boosts that lastabout 3 hours, leaving the consumer, tired and wanting more caffeinewhen the dose has worn off. Peo-ple tend to like Starbucks coffee bet-ter than a lot of companies because ithas a lot more caffeine than othercoffee places.

When you think about it Starbuckscoffee is a lot like a cigarette com-pany because both companies sellsomething that is highly addictiveand both of the companies productscontain a drug. The only difference isthat one can kill you. The two prod-

ucts both cost about the same too, a java chip frappuccino costs about$4.75 at Starbucks and the averagepack of cigarettes cost $4.32. When

people that are addicted to caffeinedon't drink their coffee in the morn-ing they experience withdrawalsymptoms are almost identical to thewithdrawal symptoms of a cigarette.

In my opinion Starbucks coffee is nobetter than a cigarette company be-cause it addicts it's consumers for lifeand is not very healthy.
