She is Pearl Oleson of the Oleson win the queenly honors, she would be right at home in the carnival at- mosphere. Not only does she come lYom a long line of skiers, but she is among the better women skiers of the North Country. One of her favorite sports is skiing and her ability on the slippery boards would put many a man to shame. One of Miss Oleson's brothers, "Spike", is as well-known to North Country ski fans as the carnival itself. "Spike" is one of the few Class A jumpers in the area and always ranks high in the final standings. Two years ago he captured the title during the carnival meet. Miss Oleson's father was one of the men who helped put Ber- lin on the map as a ski center. He reputedly brought the first pair of skis into Berlin. He was among those who constructed the first jump in the city. Miss Oleson is a graduate of Berlin High School. Dr. Arnold E. Hanson, direc- tor of company relations, met •with the boys of Berlin High School and Gorham High School last Thursday and will meet with the boys of the Xotre Dame High School February 28. For the second year in a row, Brown Company is offering a scholarship to help train young men to prepare for positions of service and responsibility in in- dustry. Knowing that many Brown Company employees have sons in high school and that a num- ber of these boys may be inter- ested in facts concerning the scholarship, The Brown Bulle- tin in publishing a summary. Further information may be ob- tained from the headmasters of the three high schools in Berlin and Gorham. The scholarship will be award- ed to a boy graduate of Berlin High School, Notre Dame High School or Gorham High School to enable him to attend a techni- cal college or university. It is intended especially for a graduate who has a real interest in .engineering, chemistry or for- estry and who shows promise of being a. good student in one of these fields, - Over a four year period, the scholarship amounts to $3,000. There are specialists in the Stenographic Department, too. Here under the supervision of Eleanor Pettengill. the girls type daily, weekly and periodical ve- ports. rule various forms used in the mill offices, and type ditto and duplimat work. One giii specializes in ditto work, while another is a multigraph opera- tor. And yet another specialist does the ruling for all the forms put out by this deparment. Run Teletypes In another small room on the main floor of the Main Office the teletype operators run the two teletype machines and the West- ern Union teleprinter that are continuously transmitting mes- sages to and from the company. I One teletype handles the mes- sages between the New York of- fice and Berlin and also between thc mills and the Main Office; another machine relays messages between the Main Office and the company's Canadian offices. La Tuque. * Quebec and Montreal. Gloria Tanguay and Theresa Gcndron are the operators, with Pauline Quessey and Margaret Belanger as relief operators. The Main Office also has three girls. Evelyn Oleson. Laurette Landry and Jeanne Caron, who see daily that the "'mail goes through." They sort, deliver, in- sure, register and record the vast amount of mail that goes in and out of the company every day. Other operators, equally es- sential to the smooth running of company business, are the tele- phone operators. Honey Cameron and Merna Joudrey are on the job to .the tune of about 2.000 phone calls per day. In the Traffic Department at Cascade there's a girl who is somewhat of an information ex- pert. Eloise Howe, secretary to Eddie Delisle, can tell you sever- al ways to reach Chicago from Berlin", the most direct route to reach La Tuque and even the price of a roundtrip ticket to Bermuda. APPENDICITIS

The appendix is a useless tub-ular organ about the size of yourlittle finger. It is part of thelarge intestine and forms a sortof dead-end street in the lowerright hand corner of your abdo-men.

When the appendix becomesjnfected and inflamed, its ownerhas appendicitis. As soon as thisoccurs, nature gives an unmis-takable sign — pain. This paindoes not always begin in theright lower side. It may begin inthe pit of the stomach and fre-quently be mistaken for stomachache or "acute indigestion." Theappendicitis pain may at firstcome and go, but it keeps oncoming back sharper and sharp-er. It finally settles around theappendix and continues.

Although the symptoms of ap-pendicitis may be variable, andthe condition may be difficult to-diagnose, any abdominal painthat lasts more than three hoursshould receive the attention ofyour family physician withoutdelay.

The only treatment for appen-dicitis is surgery. The operationis not dangerous provided that

treatment is not delayed. Statis-tics have shown that every hour

i you wait raises the odds againstyou.

i If the pain suddenly stops, this'may mean peritonitis following arupture of the appendix. Thismeans danger and requires im-mediate attention.

Prevention: There is no sure, way to present appendicitis., However, you can reduce thepossibility of an appendix be-

"coming troublesome by:1. A v o i d i n g constipating

foods.! 2. Avoiding frequent and un-: prescribed laxatives.

3. Exercising, regularly, es-. pecially by walking.

If you have developed appen-dicitis: You should take the fol-lowing precautions while waitingfor the doctor:

1. Take nothing by mouth.2. Do not take a laxative or

enema as these may cause theappendix to burst.

3. Apply an ice bag for per-* sistent pain in the abdomen.Never use a hot water bottle be-cause heat stimulates action;cold keeps the organs at rest.

AT A KITCHEN SHOWERI RECENTLY, I heard the bride-! to-be say that she was particu-larly glad she received so manypots and pans, because if shehad to buy them herself shewould not know what to look forto get the most for her money.

This gave me the idea that'some of you might appreciate aj few pointers on this subject, too.:so I did a little investigating andjthis is what I found:

Pyrex or similar glassware is'considered a favorite type uten-! sil by many for both oven bak-'ing and top-of-the-stove cooking.I When using it be sure the out-i side of the utensil is completelyI dry before placing it on theI burner or in the oven. This will' prevent cracking of the g.lass.

GOOD for both types of cooking.! There are three grades of enam-| eled ware. The lowest grade is{called graniteware. This type is; dipped into liquid porcelain en-: amel only once. The next gradeis dipped twice, the second coatbeing of white or colored enam-el. The best quality is dippedthree times, and the top coat isof harder enamel that rcsi?:.^acids.

Since enameled ware oftenchips easily, it is wise not to usean * egg beater or other such

| kitchen utensil to beat or whipfood in an enameled dish. Trans-fer the food to a glass bowl orI some other container and then'proceed to whip or beat it \vith-• out fear of getting small particles; of the dish along with the food.

For oven baking, tin and

aluminum pans give a nice! brown and a fairly thin crust.

Glass, pottery, aluminum, en-ameled ware or tin are all goodmaterials for pie plates. Somepie plates have edges which helpeven the amateur turn out abeautiful '"fluted-edge" on a pie.
