SUCCESSFUL MISSION TO TAIWAN

A delegation from BIST visited three schools in Taiwan over the weekend of 15 - 18 March.

The Headmaster, Mr Challoner, and his wife were accompanied by Mr Richard Cobey and Mrs Margaret Feng, to be welcomed by Pan Tao School in Miaoli, Hsin Fong School in Hsinchu and Cheng Gong School in Yilan.

Pan Tao and Hsin Fong have already sent students to BIST and the first students from Cheng Gong will arrive next term.

The schedule was a busy one with plenty of opportunities to speak with students and parents. The Headmaster made a presentation to parents, student interviews were carried out, and Mr Cobey delivered an excellent les-son in front of over 300 students. The whole trip was masterminded by our Head of Chinese, Mrs Feng.

At BIST we would like to see more students join us from Taiwan and we welcomed the opportunity to improve our links with our ‘sister’ schools. The staff returned home very tired, late on Monday 18 March.

IGCSE MUSIC CONCERTOn Friday 29 March we were enter-tained by our Year 11 IGCSE Music stu-dents. Pun, Eric, Time and Ice performed their solo and ensemble pieces that will be submitted for their coursework this month. The students performed pieces by Mozart, Beethoven, and Scarlatti, as well as more modern pieces by John Schmidt, Tommy Emmanuel, Depapepe

and the Taiwanese movie Secrets.

These concerts are invaluable experience for our students and, although the nerves ran high, the boys did an excellent job in putting across their talents.

Thank you to everyone who attended the concert and good luck to the students in their upcoming exams!

BIKE RIDE CASH DELIVEREDOver 52,000 Baht Raised for Camillian Home

This year in our annual bike ride, our students raised a total of 52,376 baht for the Camil-lian Home foundation, which cares for orphans and children with disabilities. Last month we took fifteen of our most active fundraisers from Year 10 to the Home to meet the students and staff and to present them with the funds raised.

We were made very welcome and Lalita, the De-velopment Director of Camillian Home, presented our school with a Certificate of Appreciation. After lunch, our students were taken on a tour of the Home and mixed very well with the Camillian stu-dents. We were treated to impromptu musical and dance performances and our students were quite helpful in passing on their English skills. There is a warm and caring atmosphere at the Home and our students were honoured to be made a part of this.

The following Monday our students made a presen-tation at assembly, explaining to their peers what the Camillian Home does and what they gained from their visit to the Home. We awarded our students Commu-nity Service Certificates to recognize their contribu-tion and would once again like to take this opportu-nity to thank all of our students and their parents for supporting our Community Service Programme.

SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING WEEK 2013Bloody dissections of lungs, hearts and eyeballs, electric shocks that leave your hair standing on end, quizzes for KS3, KS4 and 5, liquid that boils at -196oC that freezes a banana in seconds and chills the air surrounding you as soon as it evaporates….. it may sound like Science fiction but this was Science fact.

For the week 18 – 22 March, pupils enjoyed one off Science demonstrations including all of the above, and more. Activities were created to encourage enthusiasm for Science whilst helping pupils learn more about themselves, and the world around them.

Pupils had the chance to attend a fun Science activity every lunchtime. KS3 had special Science lessons and homework - Year 7 carried out a circus of experiments linked to colour, Year 8 looked at the strength of shapes and forces involved in building structures, and Year 9 made materials such as Nylon and slime.

Years 3,4,5, and 6 also attended a special Science lesson in the labs where they carried out practical’s that were fun, and linked to the curriculum they were currently learning.

Our Science Sixth Formers and GAP teachers helped out throughout the week to make Science week a stunning all around success.

WORLD MATHS DAY - 6 MARCH 2013 All students were given the opportunity to participate in this international event across 48 hours. Students partici-pated individually against other students across the world, usually against two or three students at a time. However their scores are tallied as a whole school and we therefore also competed as a school against other schools worldwide.

The levels are designed to increase in difficulty to provide a challenge to even the most able students. Speed and accuracy are paramount as 3 wrong answers means that the student is “striked out” of that round. Students are able to log on at home as well as in school to practise and compete. On the right are the BIST school top 10 students in both the senior age categories. Well done to all who participated.

CRAIG BARTON VISITS BROMSGROVE – RUNS WORKSHOPS

Mr Craig Barton, a UK Maths Teacher and the Maths advisor to the Times Education Supplement, visited Bromsgrove on Tuesday 26 February.

He was in Bangkok to attend the SEAMAC international Maths competition and wanted to visit some local schools. We were lucky enough to be able to be incorporated into his busy schedule.

Mr Barton ran two Maths workshops for Years 7 to 9. He introduced some initially simple Mathematical games but then incorporated some conditions to the games which really made us all think!

Students worked extremely hard and embraced the challenges, working with tenacity and enthusiasm. Mr Bar-ton was very impressed with all our Bromsgrove students.

CLIVE PIG THE STORYFELLA VISITS AGAIN

On Wednesday 13 March the English Department organised for Clive Pig, a highly skilled and experienced performer, to revisit Bromsgrove after an absence of three years.

The successful performer has appeared on TV, radio and at the Glastonbury Festival in England. He entertained our Early Years pupils first, then our primary and lastly our KS3 secondary students. We were delighted to see so many Ascot students join us for the afternoon.

Student reviews included the words ‘amazing’ and ‘awesome’. Satang of Year 9 commented, “We thought he was very interesting. He grabbed our attention by his emotional and enthusiastic story- telling.”By the look on everyone’s face, we were all lucky to have him here.

LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL!Taylor win House Debate Trophy

The House Debate Final was a wonderful event enjoyed by the secondary school in February.

Masha (Year 12), Ksenija (Year 13) and James (Year 11), eloquently argued that life is indeed beautiful for Taylor House, while Mahad and Jay R (both Year 13), in Walters, were articulate in arguing that it was not.

The audience also participated, by asking probing questions to both sides at the end, which the teams dealt with very well. Two teachers judged the pupils on manner, materials and method,

and the decision was made that the arguments for ‘Life is Beautiful’ were stronger and Taylor House duly won the House Debate Trophy.

BLITHE SPIRITS AT THE BRITISH CLUB!

Our Year 12 and 13 English Literature students attended the Bangkok Community Theatre’s performance of Noel Coward’s classic comedy ‘Blithe Spirit’ hosted by the British Club on the evening of Tuesday 12 March.

‘Blithe Spirit’ is a classic Coward comedy with misadventure leading to mayhem and madcap merriment. The play concerns the socialite and novelist Charles Condomine, who invites the ec-centric medium and clairvoyant, Madame Arcati, to his house to

conduct a séance, hoping to gather material for his next book. The scheme backfires when he is haunted by the ghost of his annoying and temperamental first wife, Elvira, after the séance. Elvira makes continual attempts to disrupt Charles’s marriage to his second wife, Ruth, who cannot see or hear the ghost.

Once again the Bangkok Community Theatre staged an excel-lent show. An enjoyable evening was had by all with several scenes of hilarity engaging the captive audience. The costumes were particularly eye catching with great attention paid to detail in order to capture the art deco style of 1940’s England.

We are very pleased to announce that the Bangkok Community Theatre will also be staging a performance of Ken Ludwig’s classic comedy ‘Lend Me a Tenor’ this coming June. Hope to see you there!

A VISIT TO OZ!

As part of the English curriculum, the Year 8 students have been studying how classic tales are re-worked, twisted and re-invented for a modern audience. This year we have studied Roald Dahl’s ‘Revolting Rhymes’ where the author takes classic tales and injects them with a contemporary and humor-ous twist. For example, Little Red Riding Hood becomes a cunning opportunist shooting the wolf and pigs in the poem ‘The Three Little Pigs’.

Continuing with this theme, the Year 8s have just finished studying L. Frank Baum’s classic and enchanting tale, ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and are now in the process of writing their own modern interpretations.

Last Wednesday, the English department took the students to see an updated interpretation of this novel on the big screen, ‘Oz the Great and Powerful’ directed by Sam Raimi.

The film is from the perspective of the humbug Wizard of Oz, a small-time magician who is carried to the enchanted Land of Oz by a tornado. There he must decide if he is a good man or a great man. This magical film is a perfect example of twisting a traditional tale. The students loved the film and were delighted to see a novel they had studied come alive through the magic of cinema.

LET THE PICTURES TELL THE STORY!

International Award Bronze Expedition to Sam Roi Yot National Park, 22 – 23 March

I think the pictures say it all. Fantastic scenery, a very strenuous hike (or was it a rock scramble), camping on beaches and kayaking. The students demonstrated amazing team work.It was a pleasure to spend the weekend with such amazing young people who embraced the level of dif-ficulty, were supportive of one another and appreciative of what they had achieved.Well done to everone for their contribution.

BOARDING NEWS

Tudor House

The girls in Tudor have been very busy this term. In house they have enjoyed cooking, watching movies, chatting with friends, playing music and sporting activities.

The Under 13 volleyball team have enjoyed success against a number of schools which has been tremen-dous – well done to Petty, Yok, and Rita; all the hard work has paid off.

Lana and Julia won the Primary Talent Show – Lana singing accompanied by Julia on the piano. A great re-sult girls!

A number of Year 10 and 12 girls took part in the annual sponsored bike ride to raise money for Camillian House. Altogether 54,000 baht was raised with Salma collecting over 7000 baht. A tremendous effort from Salma.

A group of adventurous Year 11 and 12 girls took part in the International Award weekend which involved a demanding trek through the forest in very high temperatures, as well as camping on the beach. Annie was delighted to see the sunrise over the sea.

At the weekend, girls have enjoyed a number of trips including a visit to the Open Zoo at Pattaya, a Thai cookery class, a visit to the cinema and exploring the Floating Markets.

As we break for Songkran, I wish all the girls a pleasant break with their families so that they may return refreshed for the new term, although the Year 11-13 girls will have to study to prepare for their examinations next term.

BOARDING NEWS

Windsor House

Windsor House in Term 2, under the leadership of Jun Young Byun as Head Prefect, has made considerable improvement in terms of discipline and respect; most rooms are neat and tidy and students are generally on time. Other prefects who were also instrumental in getting the house in shape are Paul DeBolt, Jaesuk Lee, Jeremy Liu, Jonny Ng and David Donghyun Kim. At present we also have other students on trial to become prefects in the future, and these include Tong, Ratch and Alex. Along with the GAP teachers, Tom Knowles and Nick Garvie, the student leaders have guided our Windsor boys to become more responsible and confident.

The visiting Taiwanese students with limited boarding experience, who were here for just one month in January, were able to quickly adjust to the structured routine of our daily lives. With this in mind we look forward to a new group of around 20 students coming from Taiwan’s Cheng Gong School in April.

We would like to congratulate Jason Chanhee Park for winning a scholarship to Bromsgrove School UK in Term 3. This will be an excellent opportunity for him, not only improve his English, but to learn more about maturity and leadership.

The students have participated in a number of activities both during the week and on weekends. Surprisingly, a favourite activity for some of the boys this term has been cooking and baking! Other weekly activities include extra science, maths, English, football, American Football, hockey and swimming, while weekend activities have included trips to Ayutthaya, Ampawa floating market, Suan Siam Water Park, Khao Khiew Open Zoo and to the cinema at Bang Kapi Mall.

We would like to welcome new students Derek (Doo Young) and Ming Ming. We hope they enjoy their stay in boarding and learn about the core values that the boarding environment is trying to instil in all of our students: to learn about independence, maturity and leadership.

GOLF NEWSA very busy few weeks for our golfers and the season is not quite finished.

Tap (Year 13), our number one golfer, had a fantastic victory in the Lipo Match Play Championships recently, winning the 2013 tournament! On the back of this victory he then teed up alongside the very best professionals in Asia and Europe in the Thailand Open at Thana City. He unfortunately missed the cut shooting +2 for the first 2 rounds. The cut was 5 under, only a few shots away, but it shows the difference between the amateur game and professional game is only a slither away for Tap. A marvellous achievement none the less. and excellent experience for the future!

On Monday this week he also won the 15+ age group whilst participating in the Royal Bangkok Sports Club annual invitational tournament. He was joined by Liz (Year 11) in the older age category. Farsai and Ja(Year 7) in the 12 -14 years group and Timer(Year 5) and Mek(Year 6) in the 11 and under. Tap shot a su-perb 2 under par 64 gross to produce the best score of the competition! (Insert the photo sent from Thame of the group at The Sports Club) This could however have been even better as he was 5 under par on the back nine holes, excellent preparation for the trip to Hua Hin next week where our top 4 golfers are repre-senting Bromsgrove International School in the World Schools Golf Challenge. www.worldschoolsgolf.com

Tap will be joined by Liz, who also has had some excellent preparation for this event by winning last week in the Thailand Junior National Games as part of the Bangkok team. The event was held at Khon Kaen Golf Club, with Liz winning the girls’ individual gold medal with an overall score of 5 under par. Liz continued her strong performance on Monday at The RBSC with a solid game of 72, narrowly missing out on 3rd place by a shot.

The third member of the WSGC team is Bright (Year 12), who is playing across the road this week in the True Vision Junior Champi-onships at Windsor Park GC. We are wishing him well! Mark (Year 11), our fourth team member, has been avidly practising at every opportunity and is now just eager to tee up at Black Mountain on Sunday this week.

Dates for your diary:31 March – 5 April: The World Schools Golf Challenge in Hua Hin. Please follow our team using the link above. We wish them the very best of luck and thank King Power and Fenix Golf for their tremendous generosity in sponsoring the team.

Sunday 28 April: BISAC Golf Championship at Bangkok GC. Payments must be made before the end of this term to the school office.
