THE BRAKENHALE SCHOOLHigh Expectations and Challenge for All

Welcome to Y10 Information Evening

THE BRAKENHALE SCHOOLHigh Expectations and Challenge for All

Welcome!

The aim of tonight is to introduce the plan to help maximise the potential of every one of our Y10 students. You will hear from Mr Beukes about our expectations and the heads of the core subjects, English, Maths and Science, will appraise you of what faces the students this year.

Mr Gibson, Deputy Headteacher, will talk to you about how we are raising standards at Brakenhale, and how parents/carers are an integral part of helping all students to achieve.

Support Structure at Brakenhale

There are lots of professionals who can help support your son/daughter throughout their GCSEs:

Tutors- First point of contact

Mr Benson- Head of Year 10

Mrs Duddy- Assistant Head of Year 10

Mr Beukes- Head of KS4

Mr Gibson- Deputy Headteacher

Miss Gill- Student Support Manager

Uniform/Equipment

These are very important aspects of life at Brakenhale:

• A smart uniform instils a sense of pride and expectation that is carried on into a student’s adult life. We expect that all students will come to school dressed appropriately and ready for work.

• Having the right equipment is also crucial. Lessons are delayed and learning halted when students don’t have the basic equipment. It’s been good to see that 99% of students now have a pencil case with everything they need.

THE BRAKENHALE SCHOOLHigh Expectations and Challenge for All

Attendance and Punctuality

Students need to be in school to learn. The expectation is that students will have an attendance of at least 95%. Of course, sometimes we cannot come to school through illness or other reasons- however please bear in mind that even an attendance of 90% means half a day off a week! In fact, 90% attendance over the course of a year adds up to a whole 4 weeks off school. In these crucial two years that means a lot of learning is lost.

Punctuality is also important. As the students mature into young adults our expectations change accordingly. The school expects that young adults should be able to be in school on time and ready to get on with the day. Arriving on time often has an impact on setting the tone for the day.

Homework

Y10 should be having plenty of homework set to keep them occupied. One way we are making it easier for students to keep

organised is through Show My Homework.

All students have now been shown how to log in, regardless if they are at home or school. The good news for the students is

that you can now log in too!

Homework

Method 1:

Go to Google and type in brakenhale show my homework.

The first link will take you to the whole school calendar where you can search for your student’s classes.

Method 2:

All students and parents have been issued a PIN that can be used to log in to the site. This is accessed via the login page and then clicking on:

Maths Curriculum

By Tom Dean

THE BRAKENHALE SCHOOLHigh Expectations and Challenge for All

General changes to the maths curriculum

• GCSE Maths is going to become more demanding

• More content is being added to foundation and higher tiers

• The pupils will achieve a numerical grade (1-9) (9 is the highest and 1 is the lowest)

THE BRAKENHALE SCHOOLHigh Expectations and Challenge for All

Examinations

• The total time for the examinations is increasing from 3 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours 30 minutes. All exams will be sat at the end of the course.

• No early entry option available for pupils.

• There are fewer marks at the lower grades and more marks at the higher grades at both Foundation & Higher Tier.

• Pupils will be required to remember more formulas.

• More emphasis on problem solving

THE BRAKENHALE SCHOOLHigh Expectations and Challenge for All

Content

• There is roughly a third more content required for GCSE Maths – ‘big fat maths’

• A lot of content has moved from Higher Tier to Foundation Tier as well as from A-Level to Higher Tier. There has also been the introduction of some ‘new’ topics.

• Financial education has been reinforced with a focus on solving problem involving percentage increases and decreases, simple interest and repeated growth.

• Increased requirements for algebra, geometry & measures and ratio, proportion & rates of change. (Introduction to calculus)

Content moving TO Higher Tier

• Expand the products of more than two binomials

• Interpret the reverse process as the ‘inverse function’; interpret the succession of two functions as a ‘composite function’ (using formal function notation)

• Deduce turning points by completing the square

• Calculate or estimate gradients of graphs and areas under graphs, and interpret results in real-life cases (not including calculus)

• Simple geometric progressions including surds, and other sequences

• Deduce expressions to calculate the nth term of quadratic sequences

• Calculate and interpret conditional probabilities through Venn diagrams

THE BRAKENHALE SCHOOLHigh Expectations and Challenge for All

‘New’ Content to both tiers

• Use inequality notation to specify simple error intervals.

• Identify and interpret roots, intercepts, turning points of quadratic functions graphically; deduce roots algebraically.

• Fibonacci type sequences, quadratic sequences & geometric sequences.

• Relate ratios to linear functions.

• Interpret the gradient of a straight line graph as a rate of change.

• Know the exact values of sin 𝜃 and cos 𝜃 for 𝜃 =0°, 30°, 45°, 60° and 90°; know the exact value of tan 𝜃 for 𝜃 = 0°, 30°, 45° and 60°.

Omitted Topics

• Trial and improvement

• Tessellations

• Isometric grids

GCSE English Language and Literatureat Brakenhale

THE BRAKENHALE SCHOOLHigh Expectations and Challenge for All

English Language – Subject Content

There will be two examination papers, each worth 50%.

In GCSE English Language students will read and be assessed on high-quality, challenging texts from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries.

Each text studied will represent a substantial piece of writing, making significant demands on students in terms of content, structure and the quality of language.

The texts, from a range of genres and types, will support students in developing their own writing by providing good models.

The texts will include literature and extended literary non-fiction, and other writing such as essays, reviews and journalism (both printed and online).

THE BRAKENHALE SCHOOLHigh Expectations and Challenge for All

Reading

Students will develop their ability to read critically and with greater understanding.

They will evaluate writers’ choice of vocabulary, form, grammatical and structural features.

THE BRAKENHALE SCHOOLHigh Expectations and Challenge for All

Writing

Students will produce clear and coherent texts for different purposes and audiences to describe, narrate, explain, instruct, give and respond to information, and argue;

Students will write for impact using language creatively, imaginatively and persuasively.

Poetry Students will study one cluster of poems taken from the AQA poetry anthology, Poems Past and Present. There is a choice of two clusters, each containing 15 poems. The poems in each cluster are thematically linked and were written between 1789 and the present day.

The two clusters are:• Love and relationships• Power and conflict.Students will study all 15 poems in the chosen cluster and must be prepared to write about any of them in the examination.

Unseen poetry In preparing for the unseen poetry section of the examination students will read a wide range of poetry in order to develop their ability to closely analyse unseen poems. They will be able to analyse and compare key features such as their content, theme, structure and use of language.

The important first steps

THE BRAKENHALE SCHOOLHigh Expectations and Challenge for All

Making the transition from pupil to student

• Taking responsibility for own learning and future.

• Making full use of available resources.

• Ask the question ‘What do I need to do to improve?’

• Revise and review everyday (Every minute counts!)

• Work hard and be productive.

• The right place at the right time.

THE BRAKENHALE SCHOOLHigh Expectations and Challenge for All

Academic success

• Continuous self-appraisal on performance.

• Excellent organisation

• Focus and involvement

• Ownership of learning

• Understanding what is expected of them.

• Ask for help!

This will be evident through the following:

Completing homework; meeting coursework deadlines; revision throughout the year; studying for tests/exams and

attending after school catch up/revision sessions

THE BRAKENHALE SCHOOLHigh Expectations and Challenge for All

Why is revision so important?
