Food can have an immediate and lasting effect upon a person’s mental health and behavior because of the way they affect the structure and function of the brain. While most people are aware of how diet affects their physical health, fewer understand that the brain, as an organ, is affected by the foods they eat, and how this has a knock on effect on their mental health.

Good food…Good food… Bad food…Bad food…While some foods damage the brain by releasing toxins or oxidants that harm healthy brain cells, there are many more nutrients that serve the brain without deception or damage, which can improve mood and mental wellbeing. People must have nutritional deficiencies in their diet, they must be given omega-3 fatty acids, multivitamins and mineral supplements. Those with poor diets are advised to reduce their intake of saturated fat and sugar. Young people must eat a balanced diet, to reduce the need for supplements and follow an exercise program.

Growing evidence indicates the benefits of dietary interventions to support a person’s recovery from mental health problems. But financial investment is now needed to further this understanding and develop appropriate interventions to help people manage mental health problems including depression, dementia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and schizophrenia.

Breath deep. This is one of the easiest and most effective ways to improve the functioning of your brain immediately. By breathing deeply we relax and put more oxygen in the blood (therefore in the brain), both of which help. Relaxation has been proven to improve brain function. Low oxygen levels in the blood have been shown to decrease it. Since most of us are in the habit of breathing too shallowly, this is a quick way to increase IQ. By the way, if you breath through your nose, you are more likely to breath deeply

Meditating also helps, primarily because of the deep breathing aspect. The state of mind achieved through a simple breath-watching meditation allows true relaxation, and is conducive to creative problem solving. Just close your eyes and breath through your nose, deeply at first, then in whatever way is comfortable. As thoughts arise, dismiss them and return your attention to your breath. Do this for at least a few minutes.

If you just learned a person's name, think about how that person will be important to you in the future, where you are likely to see them next, and anything you notice about them.
