Ellen Kehl, 18 years, of Roma is about to achieve her greatest dream as a highland dancer. Ellen has been selected in a team of 50 dancers from across the globe, to dance at the 2018 Edinburgh Military Tattoo in August in Scotland. The team of dancers from Canada, USA, Britain and Australia will first come together on July 26 to train for a week before performing at Edinburgh Castle twice a day for a month, on one of the most famous stages in the world. After more than 10 years of Highland dancing, and her previous experience in the OzScot Australia Dancing team, achieving a place in this renowned team for such a prestigious international event marks the pinnacle of Ellen’s dancing achievements and the realisation of a lifelong dream. Ellen was a member of the Roma Highland Dancing Studio for many years before moving to Toowoomba for University in 2017. She has continued dancing with the McGrath Highland Dance Studio, Toowoomba, where she is making the most of the opportunities highland dancing gives her. With the support of her teachers and family, and now sponsored by the Toowoomba Caledonian Society, she is overjoyed about this exciting opportunity and hopes to make her hometown of Roma proud.

He became coordinator of the Japanese Gardens Project, the largest community based initiative in Toowoomba at the time. Allen retired in 2003 to spend more time in his own garden. Everyone is welcome to attend and it promises to be a great morning!

A representative of the Muckadilla Community Association Incorporated attended the recent funeral of Jim Joliffe held at the Anglican Church in Mitchell. Mr Joliffe passed away peacefully on Thursday 5th of July 2018 and was was formerly the owner of "Gilmore's Mistake" north of Amby and more recently lived in Brisbane. Mr Joliffe was a well-known grazier in the Muckadilla district and had an interesting life, which included riding as an amateur jockey at the Muckadilla Race Course during the 1940’s and 1950’s. The thoughts and sympathies of the Muckadilla community are with the Jim’s family at this difficult time. Jim Joliffe at 95 was thought to be the oldest surviving Service Man or Woman named on the Muckadilla Commemoration Plaque. His name will be one of some 120 names to be inscribed on the Muckadilla Dedication Wall, giving recognition to former Muckadilla Service Men and Women. Foundations are currently being laid with the official dedication scheduled for Remembrance Day, 2018.

Mitchell | Amby | Mungallala At the 22 Mile Creek, on the banks of the Maranoa, where three water sources meet they gathered. Everyone took part in a welcoming, traditional smoking ceremony, as their ancestors had done for many years before them. They gathered in memory of Aboriginal Elder Aunty Irene Ryder who among her many achievements had a natural ability to bring people together. Ngulalma ngalinda in Gunggari Language means “Because of Her We Can” The Maranoa River is used by Gunggari women for physical, social and emotional, and spiritual wellbeing. Over 25 Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists from all over Australia along with many locals shared conversations and created vibrant and meaningful art through music, weaving, dying, painting and etching. They also learnt about bush foods and medicines which they collected along the banks of the river and surrounding bush. The artists learnt how the wild orange plays a big part in women’s healing along with the emu bush for social and emotional wellbeing and sandalwood for spiritual wellbeing, whether it be the bark, roots, leaves or twigs each plays an intricate part in their lives. What could be more fitting than to start each morning with the beautiful Jabbin Jabbin (Morning Song) taught by Saereva Mitchell and improvised by Vanessa, Erik and family. The old piano that was used for this song was taken down to the sight and slowly over the days dismantled and pieces used in different ways to create music. Aunty Olive Murphy shared her stories of times past, listeners sat silent as the breeze echoed her words through the leaves of the big old gum trees and along the river banks. The three day arts immersion ended with a showcase of the artist’s work at the Mitchell Hall along with video and still images taken by Greg and Emma Harm from Tangible Media and some amazing sounds created by Vanessa & Erik from Clocked Out. “What an amazing experience that the Gunggari community have shared with us. The artists have left full with inspiration and awe. Thankyou!” said coordinator Jude Roberts.

Amby Branch QCWA held a successful afternoon at Muckadilla recently where members and visitors sewed shopping bags to

replace the banned plastic bags. Participants also swapped a number of suitable and easy patterns for a variety of shopping bags so they can continue producing them at home. Amby Branch held their Annual General Meeting followed by the International Luncheon featuring Germany on July 18 at Amby Hall. The branch will also raise funds for the QCWA State disaster fund which assists Queenslanders in time of flood, fire and drought when they cater the ‘Share Your Craft Day at Springhill Country Craft Retreat on August 18.

Another awesome weekend was had on June 23 for the girls and adults from the Mitchell Magpies Netball Club. They rose early and travelled to St George to compete against the under 8’s, under 10’s and 12 and over open team from the St George Netball Assoc. It was great to see the effort put in from so many families who came to support the teams. The girls from both sides were well presented and full of energy as they proudly ran onto the courts in their uniforms eager for the days play. Kristy and Maryann Russell, coaches for the Mitchell Magpies were impressed with how well the girls overcame the unfamiliar bitumen courts, so very different from the grass courts they train on, to compete against the well-polished

St George teams. Kelsey Davies an outstanding, agile player from St George, was a pleasure to watch as she placed herself just in the right spot to receive and send the ball each time. The girls look forward to playing St George again in Mitchell on July 29!

It was a first for a group of 8 young children from Mitchell and District Little Athletics who made the early morning, chilly trip to Dulcacca on June 30 to compete in the 12th Annual Dulaccca Winter Athletics Carnival. The day was filled with track and field events, resulting in places and ribbons for the Kenafake, Bowen, Hindle and Pearce families to be proud of.

On Saturday August 18 bring your craft along to Springhill Country Craft Retreat at Amby to show or sell. There will be lots of food, novelties, stalls and displays. Funds raised go to the RFDS, Cancer research, Anglican Church & QCWA State Disaster fund. All welcome! Phone 46231601 to book a stall.

Ever wanted to ride a camel or race a pig? Well you’ll get the chance to do both at Mitchell’s Camel and Pig Races hosted by the Mitchell Show Society on Saturday August 25, 2018 at the Showgrounds. The camel races will feature a Calcutta race program along with the Camel Cup final. Come and enjoy a great family fun day for all. Proceeds from the event got to the Mitchell Show Society and the next annual Mitchell Show. The pig races and sweeps, novelty races, market stalls, entertainment, bar and canteen will be operating all day. The Mitchell Show Society is also looking for people to help out at the Camel Races - even a couple of hours help would be much appreciated! They are looking for ticket sellers and help with other general duties plus anyone willing to help for a couple of hours as bar staff. Many hands make light work! For further information please contact Steve Hancock at Landmark 0488439588.

Through a State Government Community Sustainability Action Grant, staff and children at Mitchell EEC have been able to develop a Community Garden. Families and community members came to our first garden day and helped weed and plant out donated plants. A big thanks to Mitchell Hardware for the donation of plants. The gardens are looking great and are available for any community members to come in and help themselves to fresh vegetables and fruit.

All members of the Mungallala community were invited to a wedding (of sorts) on the July 8 2018. The Wedding Planners, Karen Timmins and Jacqui Beale, ensured that everyone was dressed appropriately for the “Wedding of the Year”. The day commenced at 9:30am with morning tea, provided by the

Mungallala Parents and Citizens Association, and served by Kylie Hindle, representing the P&C. These refreshments ensured brains were working for the arduous task ahead, locating the reception over an 80 km trek through the Mungallala countryside. The Ceremony commenced from 9:30 am until 11:00am, with guests leaving at 10 minute intervals, for an Observation Car Rally. All wedding party guests were provided with cryptic instructions to reach the reception, collecting appropriate items and information along the way. Wedding guests, in vehicles, enjoyed the views, drive and learning a little more about the surrounding area. Once at the reception venue, wedding party guests in vehicles were joined by other guests that had been invited to the reception. This ensured that all community members were able to celebrate this inaugural event. The wedding breakfast, Sausage Sizzle, supported much friendly banter followed by speeches and appropriate wedding photography. This event was very successful, with all participants requesting other similar events (Observation Car Rally’s), on an annual basis. The gift register kept everyone happy with Wayne and Karen Dingle gifted first prize and Taneeka Dingle gifted first prize for junior attendees. Alan Wehl was gifted two bottles of wine, from the Mungallala Progress and Sporting Association Inc. Raffle. Many other lucky recipients enjoyed gifts for successfully locating the reception. Save the date - The Mungallala Progress and Sporting Association Inc., therefore, request that you mark Sunday July 7, 2019 for the next Observation Car Rally, theme to be posted in the Bottle Tree Bulletin closer to the date.

Jess Schofield teaches maths, robotics and technologies at the Injune State School and is the STEAM coordinator (science, technology, engineering, arts, maths). She was recently internationally recognised as LEGO’s Australian Teacher of the Year and travelled to the awards ceremony in Boston, USA in June. Jess won the award for her Robot Olympics project where students constructed and programmed robotic athletes. LEGO believes this project is one that could be replicated around the world. Congratulations Jess – you have done Injune proud! Rugby tragics Principal Rob Nowlan and HPE teacher Michael Tucker have also had success in recent months, teaming up to coach the Darling Downs Under 18s Rugby Union in the state championships held in Brisbane in May. Both men were on the selection panel and due to the tyranny of distance could only train the team for one weekend in Toowoomba. Despite this erratic lead-up and an unusual number of injuries Michael and Rob guided the team into the Grand Final where they narrowly lost to the Gold Coast. Six of the Darling Downs players were selected for the Combined State Schools team, which is a credit to their coaching team. Well done Rob and Michael.

A message from Injune Rodeo President Ken Fien, which goes to show the community effort involved in staging an event of this size: “Another rodeo is done and dusted I would like to thank everyone involved in making the day a success. Firstly thanks to Maranoa Regional Council for preparing the grounds, the generator for the canteen and truck for the rubbish. Thanks to Fiona, Wendy and her offsiders. Thanks to all our sponsors whom without their support it would be impossible to run a rodeo let alone a successful one.

Thanks to Matt Bidgood and everyone who did a stint in the bar. Thanks to the ladies in the secretaries box for keeping everything on track and dealing with the odd drama. Special thanks to Cheryl Tarry and Yvonne Finger for their assistance. Thanks to the girls in the canteen - everybody loved the food. Thanks to the cancer council ladies on the gate. Thanks to Jamal Hamilton and the boys for the entertainment. Thanks to our local announcer Jack Johnson. Thanks to Peter Sheehan for

the roundup and scarifying of the arena and to John Sands with the water truck. Thanks to all the Tooloombilla rodeo committee members who helped, to Clem Faulkner for driving the courtesy bus all night and to Debbie Duff for taking photos. Thanks to all the judges, shute bosses, pickup men, bullfighters, stock contractors, and competitors; and last but not least thanks to our committee for all your work before, during and after – it’s a pleasure working with you.”

Injune was the place to be during the school holidays with plenty of activities for the kids including library sessions, barefoot bowls, movie nights with a sausage sizzle, a skateboarding workshop and a teddy bear picnic. The kids even mingled at the hall with the Big Lift QUT students who were in town for their annual help out. Long lunches have also been a feature in the district recently. The Santos sponsored Seniors Luncheon was held in the hall on July 6 and an RFDS lunch was held at Tooloombilla Homestead for the RFDS on June 24. Ten members of the RFDS board attended the lunch as part of a tour to meet country people who fundraise. The Tooloombilla

Rodeo Committee, who raise money through various events including the rodeo and campdraft, took the opportunity to present the board members with a cheque for $20,000 – proceeds from just twelve months fund raising. Well done Tooloombilla!

Injune took the honour of being the first ever location for an exhibition by talented Emerald photographer Bindi Nadler when Dusty Dreams Under Country Skies opened on Thursday July 5 at the Injune Creek Gallery. Bindi’s prints lovingly portray life on the land; most are taken on either Kensington, the cattle property she grew up on, or St Helens where she now lives with husband Anthony. Bindi’s work is noted for its rich colour, whether that be the honeyed tones of a horse eye, striking sunsets or golden afternoon light around aged sheds. All visitors on opening night found a country image they could relate to. The exhibition will run until August 15. Following Bindi’s exhibition will be Grandma’s Legacy in Yarns, an exhibition by Hulda Perrett, which will open at noon on August 18 and be on display until October 3. In other arty news Injune’s fourth annual Creative Odyssey will be held on August 18 and 19. An Initiative of Injune Arts and supported by Maranoa Regional Council and the Regional Arts Development Fund, this weekend extravaganza at the Injune Hall will offer six professional tutors over 23 workshops. On 14 August 1924, the last Cobb & Co Coach in Australia ran from Surat to Yuleba. This year, the Yuleba community will mark 94years since the last run with a street parade from the school to Garth Cox Park in period dress along other community activities This was the end of 70 years of horse drawn mail delivery, passengers and freight being delivered by horse and coach. Coach No 112 a white coach was built at Charleville and completed the last run on the Mail Service 177 (Surat to Yuleba) and is on display in the Cobb & Co Museum in Toowoomba on loan from the National Museum in Canberra. Starting in Victoria in 1853, Cobb & Co Coach runs were essential to the development of our great land from Queensland all the way to the scarcely explored country in Western Australia. Coach travel was considered first class travel even with dust, heat, floods, insects and cramped conditions and the possibility of Bushrangers. Cobb and Co is part of many, many communities in Australia and we invite individuals, schools, historical groups, community groups and Councils to revisit and celebrate their links and history each year on 14 August.

Bendemere hosted their annual Shield at the Wallumbilla Showgrounds Sunday June 17. The day ran well, albeit a bit chilly! Riders Kealey Harland, Dallas Price, Billy Harland, Claire Harland, Keonie Proud and Lauren Harland had a great day, with everyone winning ribbons. The club wishes to thank Melina Collier for taking on the role of organising and operating the canteen and to Troy Graham who helped on the day. Neither Melina nor Troy are club members so their generosity of giving up their

time to help out is truly appreciated. Thank you also to Graham Swan who helped with time keeping and the score sheets for 3 groups. Results are as follows: Bendemere came third in the march past where we showcased our brand new banner. Age Champions: G group:- Claire Harland – third age champion Dallas Price – first age champion F group:- Kealey Harland – second age champion Although I Group is non-competitive, Rider Class remains a judged event. Bendemere riders Lauren Harland and Keonie Proud came first in their respective groups, well done! Congratulations to Maranoa who won the Shield. Thank you to the following sponsors: Midwest Rural Traders, Brenorrs, Horse Torque, Newrybar Rugs, Goodwoods Saddlery, Riverina Stockfeeds, Landmark Mitchell and Sunshine Hardware & Rural.

The children from Yuleba and Wallumbilla will not want to return to school following a fantastic holiday program. Everyone was kept very busy by a multitude of activities from Laser Skirmish to Skateboarding and a trip to the Darling Downs Zoo as well as a week of Storm Co Activities, a First Aid Course plus much more. The biggest day of course was the trip to the Darling Downs Zoo where a 30 strong bus load left home at 4.30 am to enjoy a day of adventure and animals. Everyone agreed it was worthwhile and thanks the Bendemere Blue Light Association for sponsoring the trip.

Noonga hall was the morning tea stop for the Injune Tourism group who undertook a tour of the region following the heritage trail. It was a brisk morning and the group welcomed a warm cuppa and cake. The brands display was of great interest and Brian Leahy gave a brief talk about the history of the district as well as his association with Noonga School and the Hall.

On June 18, Mayor Tyson Golder and Councillors Jan Chambers and Geoff McMullen attended the Jackson and Noonga Community Council Meeting. The 3 R’s (Rates, Rubbish and Roads) were discussed amongst other issues. If you would like a copy of the minutes, please contact Fiona Sinnamon. The community appreciated the input of the Mayor and councillors. The next meeting will be held in Jackson on Monday September 24.

The son of Yuleba butchers Thomas ‘TV’ and Nora Murphy (nee Finnigan), John Keith Murphy was born at Wallumbilla Hospital on October 17, 1936. He left

school at 13 to work in the family butchery, while his mother operated the store next door. John met Lorraine Markey at a

Jackson dance and they married in 1959. Together, they ran Murphy’s General Store at Yuleba for over 20 years, relocating when fire destroyed the original building. John also owned and ran the Yuleba and Dulacca butcheries, before building the Wallumbilla Butchery in 1981, which he ran until 1998 when he and Lorraine retired to their Yuleba farm. A Justice of the Peace, John helped establish the Yuleba Ambulance and also served as the Yuleba Fire Brigade President/First Officer for 31 years. Son Patrick was born in 1960 and daughter Penny in 1966. In 1972, beloved Pat died from a brain tumour but John and Lorraine were blessed with two more daughters - Cherie (1973) and Tammy (1976). John and Lorraine sold their farm to Tammy and husband Jason in 2003 when John’s health deteriorated. In 2005, vascular disease led to the amputation of his right leg but ever-optimistic John enjoyed 13 more wonderful years with his wife, children and grandchildren John was surrounded by his family when he passed away on June 4 at his home at Meringandan. On June 15, he was buried at the Yuleba Cemetery. The Murphy family is grateful for the many friends and customers that John cherished throughout his life-time. They deeply appreciate the kind tributes expressed at the time of John’s passing and wish a big thank you to all those who brought delicious fare to share at John’s Wake. For a complete copy of John’s eulogy (or if anyone did not receive his church service booklet), please email [email protected].

A large group of Bendemere Garden Club members travelled north of Roma to Shane and Jenny Ferry’s property “Wataview” for a lovely afternoon. Everyone enjoyed the beautiful view as well as the stunning garden. Amazing features of the garden included the stony river bed, waterfall into the fish pond with bridge and windmill at the front of the house framed by a beautiful lawn. Hidden gems around the garden included sculptures of brolgas and sheep, mosaic of flowers, scarecrow, vegetable garden and fruit trees as well as a secret garden. Jenny addressed the meeting and spoke about the garden’s journey from 2004 and how they have the challenge of a high ph. She also talked about plans for the future which include a “Free Flight Aviary “. The guest speaker for the day was John

Downes, a horticulturalist expert on orchids, roses and lawns. He happily answered many gardening questions especially about orchids. John gave a display of rose pruning and tips on keeping roses healthy which every one appreciated. An excellent afternoon tea was enjoyed by everyone and the raffle winners were Florence Price, Shane Ferry and Muriel Stewart. The Bendemere Garden Club would like to thank Jenny and Shane for hosting such a lovely day.
