Help find the Flying Doctor’s heroes in hiding The RFDS Local Hero Awards have launched across Queensland, calling out to those community members who have rolled their sleeves up, put their hands out, or stowed away their fears in an emergency to help the Flying Doctor carry out its lifesaving work. Now in its third year, the RFDS Local Hero Awards give the RFDS (Queensland Section) an opportunity to acknowledge and thank those incredible good Samaritans, volunteers and fundraisers who go out of their way to ensure the Flying Doctor will be around for another 90 years. RFDS (Queensland Section) CEO, Nino Di Marco, said he had been overwhelmed with the support the event had received in previous years, and was eager to see what other incredible stories of support and courage would emerge in 2018. “Last year an incredible Bush Nurse, Lesley De Landelles, from the central Queensland town of Jericho took out the award,” Mr Di Marco said. “Lesley’s commitment to her community and to the work of the Flying Doctor was truly inspirational, as were all of our nominees from across the state, and every year we see more and more of these incredible people being nominated by their family, friends and peers.” One of the Local Hero Awards finalists will be named the RFDS Queensland Hero for 2018 at the RFDS Wings for Life Gala being held at the Royal International Convention Centre in Brisbane on July 28, where they will be presented with $5,000 to go towards improving health outcomes in their local community. The highly anticipated Queen’s Baton Relay passed through Roma on March 7 to much fanfare and applause from the enthusiastic crowds lining the streets. The Baton Bearers proudly travelled through the streets of Roma as family, friends, community members and a strong security unit looked on. The momentous occasion was marked with a well attended ‘end of day’ celebration at the Roma PCYC enjoyed by all.

Calling all keen Rock Hounds! Are you one of those people that pick up a rock here and there because something in the stone takes your fancy or you wonder what’s inside? The Roma Lapidary Club meets on the second Saturday of the month at the Club Rooms in McDowall Street behind the Roma Historical Society building. Even if the normal meeting day isn’t suitable, you can arrange to visit the club rooms and learn about Lapidary by contacting a member on 0429891593. Members are keen to share their skills with interested people who want to learn about what lapidary entails. A few members travelled away recently to find new specimens to experiment on and to learn new skills from

other lapidarians. It is so exciting to cut a drab looking stone and achieve a beautiful piece of jewellery, you never know what you’ll find in a stone! Members are also planning a field (fossicking) trip in the near future (when the

heat dies down).

The South West Hospital and Health Service has had a busy beginning to 2018 welcoming new nursing graduates and more recently a new pharmacist, Ms Stephanie Newsham. She tried her hand at studying journalism, learning to fly a plane and waitressing but once Ms Newsham gave pharmacy a go

she fell in love with the profession. Now, eleven years after joining the pharmacy industry, Ms Newsham has been appointed as a Clinical Pharmacist at the Roma Hospital and warmly welcomed to the community. “When the position came up at the Roma Hospital I jumped at the opportunity and am now enjoying getting to know the area,” she said. On March 15, National Close the Gap Day, the SWHHS renewed its commitment to closing the healthcare gap. “The South West HHS currently has its draft 2018-2022 Strategic Plan out for public consultation and one of the plan’s three core priorities is closing the gap on health inequality, a vision we share with the Department of Health,” said Health Service Board Chair Jim McGowan. South West HHS has been proactive in working toward this goal, appointing several Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Liaison Officers in recent years who provide advocacy and support for patients. The Liaison Officers are located in St George, Charleville and Roma and deliver outreach services to the surrounding towns. Contact your local hospital for information about accessing this service.

The Muckadilla Rising Dawn Service will be held at 6am on ANZAC Day at the Muckadilla War Memorial on the Warrego Highway. The theme will be the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Villers- Bretonneux in France. Australian, New Zealand and French Service Men will be in attendance. Guest Speaker will be Roxanne Wichlaz. Breakfast will be served in the newly renovated Muckadilla Community Hall following the service.Contact David Bowden on 0429664275 for more details.

Papal Blessing All Saints Catholic Parish had a double celebration with Parishioners watching Father Jamie Collins present a Papal Blessing acknowledging 50 Years of marriage to Dennis and Joan Hickey. This was combined with a Special Morning Tea to farewell the couple as they retire from Roma to Toowoomba. They have been very active in Parish and community life. Joan is a lifetime resident and Dennis came to Roma in 1964 as a builder. Over the years Dennis established himself as

builder who worked to the highest standards and Joan was a well-known identity in the Stock and Station Agency world and recognised for her work at Roma Hospital. Ash Wednesday An Ecumenical Service was held at All Saints Catholic Church I=in Roma for Ash Wednesday. Representatives of the Uniting, Lutheran, Anglican and Catholic Church combined to give Readings and partake of the ashes. The All Saints Liturgy Group lead by Sister Nora prepared a display of burnt logs, ashes and sack cloth to illustrate the beginning of Lent.

The Official Opening of the new Roma Community Men’s Shed was conducted by the former Member for Maranoa Bruce Scott on March 6. Mr Scott cut the ribbon on the new building in front of around 130 guests representing many community groups from Roma, Mitchell, Injune Surat and Toowoomba. The Roma Family and District History Society assisted with morning tea and the Roma Historical Motor Club presented a nine-vehicle strong display. Special guests included Kevin Chambers (One Engineering), Russell Grulke (Fair Dinkum Sheds), Mayor Tyson Golder, Bruce Scott and Men’s Shed President Mike Stuhmcke. The new shed was made possible thanks to funding from the Federal, State and Local Government as well as a significant contribution from Life Member Geoff Fernside and the Roma Community Men’s Shed. Several other Roma businesses were also recognised at the opening for their assistance since the beginning of the Men’s Shed in 2010.

Congratulations to Roma’s current state bowls representative, Robert Hammond, who has been selected to play for Queensland again at the Australian National Titles in Darwin. This

selection follows his great work as a Second in a recent Test against New South Wales. In early March the Roma Ladies Bowl Club hosted a highly successful Mixed Fours Carnival with 28 teams battling it out across the weekend. Nominations came from locals and as far afield as Lightning Ridge and Cunnamulla. The winners were Greg Benfer, Alby Gibbs, Marie Gibbs and Graham Kath. Runners up were Billy Taylor Jnr, Bill Taylor Snr, Kingsley Obst and Kathy Obst.

What a day to remember! After the much-needed rain lightened hearts, the day kicked off with festivities in the lovely green park at the Council’s Customer Service Centre on Ann Street. The welcoming speeches and school performances were just the beginning! Mitchell Bakery’s famous lamingtons were aplenty and the tasty billy tea and damper from “Bonus Downs” hit the spot for the eager crowd. While waiting for the Baton to arrive there was plenty to absorb as the Indigenous dancers put on an excellent performance and the blade shearing demonstration by Errol Brumpton,’Well Gully Poll Merinos,’ showed off the outback spirit and way of life. Eleven o’clock arrived, and the crowd began lining the streets. The rain stayed away as our local heroes proudly started their journey. The first official Mitchell Baton Bearer was Georgia Phillips, dressed in the official QBR uniform, proudly carrying the baton out the gates of the

Mitchell State School. The crowd cheered and applauded as the baton made its journey around Mitchell passing through eleven more proud and excited bearers hand’s before heading off to Morven.

The three shabby little buildings across the road from the BAG cottage in Ann Street are being given a facelift and will have a whole new life. The local, ‘Friends of the Gallery’, operating under Booringa Action Group, have taken the cottages over with the intention of transforming them from an eyesore into an attractive place for local Maranoa art and craft

people to exhibit and hold workshops, sell their work and socialise. The little cottages were initially built in the 1960s under a government Old Age Pensions Scheme and were located where the hospital now stands. There were initially four of them but one burnt down some time ago. A complication which can’t have been all that convenient … initially, there was only one bathroom between all four! Not good! However, when they were moved to the present site, a little bathroom was built onto each. Much of the restoration work will be carried out by Kel Woodall, and his crew from RESQ. Plants for the planned gardens are already

being grown and cherished. Watch this space! Coaches have been appointed for 2018 and training is off to a good start. This year is set to be a big one. up the Maggies! Mitchell Magpies Celebrating 100 Years A football reunion will be held to mark this milestone on the long weekend of September 29, 30 and October 1, 2018. More info will be available closer to the date. 2018 Sponsors A massive thanks to all Sponsors for supporting the club, especially the long-running sponsors. A big welcome also to new sponsor Ben Ridge, an ex-Magpie Junior who went onto play NRL, thanks Ridgey Didge! Also welcome back to Mitchell Auto Care & BP who are back on board. Adrian Vowles Cup On February 23 and 24 the U14s and U16s travelled to Charleville for the Adrian Vowles Cup. The U14’s combined with Charleville and Cunnamulla. Teams played 5-6 20min games across the weekend and 20 teams participated in the carnival coming from as farms a Mackay and Mt Isa. The Maggies played brilliantly and came third in their age groups.

Rep Selections Congratulations to the following boys on being selected for Roma & District:U10’s- Max Page, Jake Cox and Charlie Bowen U11’s Tailen Alford, Alex Cox, Matt Ahern and Mitch Wilkes U12’s – Connor Kingsley U13’s – Danny Cox U14’s – Maison Dobbin and Lachlan West. The first carnival for U10-12s will be played in Brisbane and Toowoomba on April 16-18. Maggies Netball Carnival The Maranoa Netball Association is hosting a carnival in Roma on April 21. All Mitchell girls age 10-15 can play. Regular season training will begin after school holidays. Thanks to local sponsors Ben & Kylie Hindle, Russell Family, Team Fruit and Veg, Fairview Black Simmentals for coming on board to make our 100yrs a memorable one! Kirstin Albeck Memorial 9’s Day The Mitchell Magpies went close to securing back-to-back wins in the 9’s competition but fell short going down to the Dalby Diehards in the Grand Final. Mitchell drew the game in the dying moments thanks to a brilliant Michael Purcell try which pushed the game into extra time. In the last few seconds of extra time, Dalby snuck over the line winning 20-16. The boys should still be very proud of their effort. Now its time to get out on the training paddock and back up their early success in the regular season.

E-Cycle Solutions have returned to Mitchell and are again offering free E-Waste collection. Defunct equipment like TV’s, computers and their accessories (printers, cords etc.) can be left in the bin located at the back of AJW Electrical & Solar (please don’t rubbish or cardboard). When full, the bin is collected, replaced, the contents sorted and sent to a workshop for disabled people in Melbourne where it is broken down for recycling.

Wondering what to do with other old technology? The Mitchell Post Office will take ‘deceased’ telephones whilst printer ink cartridges can be left at Mitchell News & Casket for recycling.

On Friday March 9 Mitchell’s QCWA Branch held their annual International Day Morning Tea at the CWA Hall. This year’s country of study was Germany and the morning tea was accompanied by a display of students works and the Photographic competition. Well done Marlene Harrison on your successful photo entries which will now be sent for Divisional

Level judging. Congrat-ulations to the following local school students whose winning entries on German culture and industries will be sent to the Division competition and good

luck! The students were: Hugh Smith (Prep), Avie Mackay (Yr 1), Storm Gould (Yr 3), Nicholas Mitchell (Yr 4), and Ryan Kinsley (Yr5). The QCWA’s Trish Kenafake said they were pleased with the student response to the

annual competition. “The competition encourages students to learn more about other countries in the world, some a long way from Australia

and with a very different culture and lifestyle to our own,” said Mrs Kenafake. Renowned Mitchell artist Joan Hurtado will be debuting a new exhibition entitled ‘Wabi Sabi’ throughout March and April at the Mitchell on Maranoa Gallery. ‘Wabi Sabi’ means something that rarely announces its presence, but waits quietly to be discovered. The Japanese ethic began in the 16th century and it celebrates the whims of nature with works being prized for their expression of spontaneity. Today, Western artists like Joan, borrow from Japanese culture to apply Wabi Sabi across all forms of art. The exhibition celebrates the whims of nature, patterns and marks on walls or doors which show the passage of time, things impermanent, imperfect and incomplete.

February saw much needed rain fall throughout the Injune area, cutting roads and causing flooding. A total of 160mm was recorded on February 21 after temperatures in the forties the week before. Official records show that Injune received 291mm from January to the end of February, up a whopping 233mm on the same time in 2017.

Although the road to Roma was cut for several days Sergeant Dion Horn from Injune Police praised everyone for their patience. “People in town, and visitors, were terrific,” he said. “The bitumen was torn off in three or four spots but everyone was good about it. Just remember when it’s flooded forget it!”

Bymount’s Creative Circle Tutor Sue Pukallus will hold two workshops in coming months. The first on April 7 will create hearts from barb-wire while the second on May 19 will create mosaic birds from old china. Bookings are essential. Phone Sue on 4626 3838 for more information. Injune Arts Inc recently held their AGM and welcome Debbie Kendall as President, replacing Jenny Shaw who held the position for a number of years and was pivotal in making the Injune Creek Gallery a reality. The current exhibition in the gallery is The Shiny Happiness by Anna Bartlett, which will be on show until May 2. Two days later, on May 4, will be the opening of the annual Santos Injune Art Show at 6pm and all local

artists and photographers are encouraged to enter with the theme Our Country – Our Life. Thanks to sponsorship from SANTOS there will be entertainment and finger foods at the opening, and refreshments available for purchase. In keeping with the theme everyone is invited to attend the opening dressed in country attire. Artists and photographers are encouraged to submit up to three pieces of original artwork, which can be listed for sale with a 20% commission to the Injune Arts Inc. The art show is open to all residents of the Maranoa Region and the Arcadia Valley and an entry fee of $5 per artist applies. All artwork must not have been exhibited in any show within the Maranoa Region and entries are to be left at the Injune Library by Monday April 30. If you require any further details please contact either Debbie Kendall on 4626 1185 or Secretary Sue Pukallus on 4623 3838, or ring the Injune Library on 4626 0502.

All sorts of activities have been happening in Injune recently. Joy Denton carried the baton for Injune in the Queen’s Baton Relay in Mitchell on March 8 in the lead-up to the Commonwealth Games. The Injune Youth Group learnt about first aid for snake bites and calling 000. Aaron Lippert braved the women of Injune to conduct self-defence classes and Renee Poole brought the energy back down again at twice-weekly yoga classes. Thanks to the Maranoa Shire Council for supporting our community.

Dawn services will be conducted at both Injune and Gunnewin this year as 2018 marks the centenary of the end of the Great War. The

service at Gunnewin is to recognise the WW1 memorial established there by the Mount Hutton Lands Settlement Project Group and will commence at 6.00am. The Injune Dawn Service will also commence at 6.00am followed by the march at 10.00am. A service will be held in the Injune Hall from 10.30am.

The Bymount Community held Red Day on February 17 to honour a valued community member and friend, Jeff (Red) Dean, who was tragically taken from us in a helicopter mustering accident in May 2015. This event was attended by approximately 220 people from all over the Maranoa who raised over $25,000, which will be donated to Lifeflight and the QAS committees of Injune, Surat, Mitchell and Roma. The support and contributions the Bymount Community receives for this day is truly amazing. A true testament to Jeff and how sadly missed he is, by us all.

There was plenty of fun on the day with dingo trap throwing, desert skiing, tug-of-war, woolpack relays, yabby and toad races. Toads fetched up to $625 at auction prior to the big race. The race however was won by underdog toad - Ralph - much to the delight of winning owner Kate Ward, who picked him up for the bargain price of $300 (cheapest priced toad). First place prizemoney in the toad race was worth $2868, so no wonder Kate was smiling. Our Red day auctions once again proved to be very popular with some spirited bidding on the wonderful array of donated services/products and the beautifully handcrafted items available. The Bymount Community would sincerely like to thank all those that supported us in any way. This is not our day, its Reds Day, a day for giving back to the community, not just in the money raised for emergency services, but a

day of family and friends all coming together for mateship and memories.

The Tooloombilla Rodeo Committee would like to thank the Injune Local Ambulance Committee for kindly donating an Automated Emergency Defibrillator (AED) for the community, which is now located at “Womblebank Station” on the yellow shed wall near the road.

Claire Wilson, President of the Injune Ambulance Committee, and Secretary/Treasurer Christie Kelly presented the defibrillator to Tom Hartley, President of the Tooloombilla Rodeo Committee. Jamie Paul the Officer in Charge at the Injune Ambulance was also in attendance giving all the committee members instructions on using the machine. A second defibrillator was donated by the Local Ambulance Committee to the Bymount Community on Red Day. The Tooloombilla Committee would also like to thank the Major and Minor Sponsors & community for all their

support of such a successful weekend!Red Day

A large crowd of officials and local community members were in attendance to witness the Honourable Craig Crawford MP, Minister for Queensland Fire and Emergency Services and Maranoa Regional Council Mayor Tyson Golder open the new Wallumbilla Joint Emergency Services Facility and unveil commemorative plaques.

The Facility will house the local Wallumbilla State Emergency Services and Rural Fire Services with all their equipment and vehicles in the one place. QFES Commissioner Katarina Carroll had high praise for the Wallumbilla Community spirit and support which made this facility a reality. Congratulations to all on your dedication and commitment to your community. Thank you to all who contributed. The community greatly appreciates everyone’s support and contributions.

The final Get Pinkt Family Fun Day will be held on April 14 2018. From small beginnings this family event started in 2011 when 3 families got together to see how they could do some fundraising for Cancer. The pact was to do it for ten years or until $100,000 was raised. So the Badgery, Taylor and extended Price family set about seeing what they could achieve. “Roll forward 8 years and we will be donning the pink shirts to fly the flag for the very last time to support research to find a cure to eradicate the Curse of our

Generation – “Cancer” in all forms, and to help our people in our own local community fighting their own battles with this disease,” spokesperson Ree Price explained. The day is held at ‘Mt Hope’, north east of Wallumbilla in the homestead gardens and is a great, fun day for all the family. The children are kept entertained in the Kids Zone with face painting, jumping castle, merry go round, races and various other activities while the “Big kids” can wander through the gardens and visit the various market stalls. Entertainment this year will be the fantastic with the ‘Whiskey Mountain Boys’ playing and Noah’s Racing Pigs tearing up the obstacle course and bringing home the ‘bacon; for their winning syndicates. There will be the usual terrific food and the ‘Man Creche’ in operation too. Come and help smash the goal. See you there!

Congratulations to Myrtle Mellon from Wallumbilla on reaching the impressive milestone of her 90th Birthday. Myrtle is well know in our community. A party was held for her at the White Bull Hotel in Roma. Family

and friends from as far away as Bendigo, Charters Towers, Sunshine Coast and Warwick travelled many miles to celebrate with her. Everyone had a great time even though the electricity went out.

In 2019 the Cob & Co Last Coach Run will be held in the district. All interested community members are invited to come along and plan the Cobb & Coach Run 2019 event. Robert Francis Seawright (Frank) of Wallumbilla and most recently Pinaroo, Roma, passed away on January 18, 2018. Frank is remembered for his life’s work in the water drilling industry and love of cattle, horse riding and farming. Frank made a life for his family with wife Rae after they married in Wallumbilla on October 5, 1950 and had five children together. He purchased his first property a year later in 1951 and later used his practical knowledge of farming oats, wheat and cattle to teach his sons. Frank was an active community member and

recently received his 70 Year Jewel from the Wallumbilla Corona Masonic Lodge. After much persuasion, Frank also became a keen bowler in the last few years. Frank will be sadly missed by his

family, friends and the Wallumbilla community.

Corona Lodge Wallumbilla recently welcomed new members and a new Worshipful Master. Mr Michael Moloney is the newly inducted Worshipful Master of Corona Freemason’s Lodge.

The following services will be held in Yuleba and Jackson to commemorate ANZAC Day 2018. More information on ANZAC Day services can be found on the My Maranoa website. Lest we forget! YULEBA 5:45am: Dawn Service, Yuleba War Memorial, Stephenson Street 9am: March commences at Yuleba Memorial Hall (please form from 8.45am) 9.15am: Service at Yuleba War Memorial, Stephenson Street 10am: Morning tea at Yuleba Memorial hall (please bring a plate to share) JACKSON 9:30am: Service at the Old Play Shed followed by morning tea

The ‘Let’s Try it Again’ Noonga Dance Well we tried again and it didn’t rain. The Noong Dance was held on March 10 and despite competing with several other local events the dance was a success! The freshly painted hall featuring an impressive feature wall proved a backdrop to the creative plant display complete with many points of interest, including a wayward frog. Angela Gleeson and Ross Downes from

Sound Elite provided the music for the night which consisted of a wide range of tunes for a variety of dance steps. Novelty dances consisted of the Monte Carlo won by Jim and Diedree Walker of Jackson. Brian and Mary Leahy chose to stand under the second fan in the Lucky Spot dance and the longest spin of the bottle game ever was won by Les and Jan Lucus. Only at Noonga could you be fascinated by the outcome of the seemingly never-ending spin of a pink wine bottle. Bill Murray with his no.1 ticket won the lucky door prize of a night’s accommodation to Possum Park and Desleigh Murray also won a ticket to Chinchilla Cinemas. Following a delicious supper of homemade cakes biscuits and sandwiches, the dedicated dancers welcomed in the new day. The Noonga Community Association would like to thank everyone for coming and making this event as memorable as ever. Hall Painting Thank you Maranoa Regional Council for painting the Noonga Hall inside and out. The Noonga Community Association appreciates the support shown by the Mayor and Councillors for our small association. We also received soap and towel dispensers just in time for the Dance, a wonderful addition to our facilities. April 2018

Surat Lions Club President Barbara Harland was delighted to present the winning entry in the Club Sponsored section of the In Focus Photography Competition – Digital Section: Patterns in Nature. The Shutterbugs Photography club has been the recipient for over a decade now of a Lions Club’s annual grant. It was coincidental but fitting that this year the Exhibition opening was held on Lions Awareness Day. The next Lions Fish and Chips Nights will occur on Saturday April 28, May 26 and June 30.

Surat’s students have recently been recognised for their great work. Students from the Surat State School were awarded 1st Innovative Solution at the Robotics National Final. Surat student Nikita Proud had the privilege of being part of the Queen's Baton Relay celebrations in Roma on March March 7. Well done Nikita!
