In its 132nd year the Roma Show proved it has still ‘got it’ drawing large crowds through the gates of Basset Park where show-goers enjoyed top-notch displays and entertainment. At the conclusion of another successful event, Secretary Emily Harris thanked everyone for their work and sponsorship. “Thank you to all our sponsors, volunteers, stewards, competitors, itinerants and helpers who have given their support and time this year. Without you, the Show would not be able to go ahead and would not have been the success it has been,” said Ms Harris. Ms Harris had a busy show, in addition to her secretarial duties, she won the Miss Showgirl Competition with Kody Crawford named Runner-Up. The Ute Show proved a big drawcard thanks largely to the participation of the Roma Historical Motor Club whose members took out many classes. The Roma Community Men’s Shed also participated in the show displaying several items made for the show with members taking out plenty of prizes in the Woodworking section too.

Bob Walker from the Brisbane Office of Fair Trading recently spoke at the Roma Community Men’s Shed on Scams. The audience were encouraged to look for the

warning signs of the various scams coming by the internet and email. The main ones to recognise were scams relating to investment, dating and romance, unexpected money, online shopping, auctions, computers and mobile devices. Other topics covered where identity theft, jobs and employment, charity and medical along with small business scams. If a scam is suspected contact www.scamwatch.gov.au.

Fifteen Members of Roma U3A chose a History Tour of Mount Abundance and Muckadilla Village for their May Social Trip. The tour started at the Big Rig in Roma then travelled down the Southern Road and onto the Mount Abundance Road. They passed properties that had sorghum and oats growing as well as fallow cultivation’s waiting for wheat to be planted. Morning Tea was held on the lawn at ‘Crochdantigh; hosted by Shannon Crocker, President of the Muckadilla Community Association. The tour reached the Muckadilla Whistle Stop Information Centre for an overview of Muckadilla History of people, businesses and service men and women. A visit to the Muckadilla War Memorial saw among other items the Lone Pine Tree planted by the Governor General Sir Peter Cosgrove.

A Shearer’s Lunch was prepared by Donna Sutton and Volunteers in the Muckadilla Community Hall with wool from Peter Hackers Roselea Stud on display. An explanation of the three Muckadilla History Sites was given before those attending returned to Roma via the Warrego Highway. A great day out was had by all!

On May 6 the air at Meadowbank was abuzz with whirring tractor motors and machinery talk. A hand held plough competition, mad tractors and a tractor pull were all highlights of the day. Congratulations to the organising team and supporters on another great event.

ANZAC Day in Mungallala saw six teams of excited players tee off in the third annual 3 ball Ambrose event. The Mungallala Progress & Sporting Association Inc. ensured that the course was beautifully prepared and members of the Rural Fire Brigade worked hard to keep everyone well fed and hydrated. Funds raised from the day will go towards the operational expenses of the brigade. Members were very pleased to look back from the golf course and admire the new, soon to be officially opened, fire shed standing on Burke Street. Mungallala Rural Fire Brigade wish to acknowledge and thank the following businesses and community members who made generous donations to the golf day: Landmark Mitchell, J & M Hobbies, NAB Mitchell, Myrene McCormack, Brenda Jukes, Elders Mitchell, Club Hotel Mungallala, Jukes Transport, Qld Cypress Supplies, Mounts Machinery, P & K Timmins Murgo Santa Gertrudis Stud, Outback Timbers, Pop’s Smash Repairs, Super Cheap Auto and Mungallala Internet Café. Mark April 25th, 2019 on your calendars for the next, Mungallala Fire Brigade Golf Day

The gardens at “Crochdantigh” were beautifully presented along with their elegant host. The weather was lovely, and as with every garden day, the food was delicious. The autumn flowers and the subtle changes of the leaves as they prepare for winter made it a wonderland of changing colour. People flocked from near and far to soak up ideas and to share their interest in gardening. The next garden days are: • June 23 @ 10 am – Val Hughes, Ann Street,

Mitchell • July 28 @ 10am – Andy & Stacey Hughes,

Mary St, Mitchell Please bring a coffee mug, chair and a plant to swap. Everyone is welcome to come along!

Over 100 people registered for the sixth consecutive year, to run, walk and roll their way along a 4km or 8km track raising awareness and funds for breast cancer. It was a very cool start to the morning, but it didn’t take long for everyone to warm up in the brilliant sunshine and to show off their perfectly pink outfits, some very shiny. The morning was filled with lots of chatter and excitement from all ages as they made their way along the course. Once again co-ordinator Kylie Douglas and her team put on a very successful event and were pleased with the morning

Mitchell Maggies Netball Maranoa Netball Association’s opening carnival was an energy filled day of very fit and talented young girls. Both Mitchell Magpies Under 8’s and Under 10’s teams absolutely blew everyone away with how well they played. The coaches could not have been prouder of them all! There was a great

turnout of parents and caregivers who brought the girls down, helped out and cheered them on and your effort and support is greatly appreciated. It was so wonderful to see the girls looking awesome in their brand new uniforms. Thank you to the following businesses and families who sponsored the new uniforms: Samios Trading Post, Mitchell Tyrepower, Team Fruit and Veg, Fairview Black Simmentals, B&B’s Blade ploughing & Regrowth Control and the Russell Family. The girls looked very professional as they ran onto the courts ready to make their mark on the competition. South West Netball Seven local school girls aged 10 -12years, 4 from Mitchell State School, 1 from St Patricks’s, 1 from Mungallala State School and 1 Distance Education student, who have never played together before competed at the Roma Netball Precinct against five other schools. The competition was fierce, but these mighty girls fought hard. The girls played 5, 40 minute games without any subs. They won one game, drew one game and lost 3 games, one of those only by one point. Shilah Lachae took home the Most Valuable Player Award, and there was no one more deserving than this very talented young player who may go far in the sport.

It is shaping up to be a great year at the Yumba with a number of schools, organisations and groups booking in for tours and camps this tourist season. Stay tuned as they will have some excellent news to share with you all in the near future. Volunteers are always welcome! And remember NAIDOC week is also coming up from July 8-15 in 2018.

From the Editor: I wish to apologise for an error in the story on Page 5 of the May Bottle Tree Bulletin titled "Elder of the Year". The article incorrectly read "Aunty Lynette has demonstrated commitment and bonging service”. The story should have said "Aunty Lynette has demonstrated commitment and ongoing service". I apologise profusely to Aunty Lynette Nixon and the indigenous community for this unfortunate typographical error. Yours sincerely, Jane Cornish.

The new amenities block at the Great Artesian Spa was opened by Mayor Tyson Golder on May 3, 2018. Councillor Puddy Chandler addressed the crowd talking about tourism in our shire and increasing visitor numbers. A good crowd turned out to witness the opening and the hall was filled with stalls from local groups representing attractions tourists can visit such as the Great Artesian Spa, Kenniff Country Quilters, Booringa Heritage Group, Mungallala Progress Association, Yumba, Bonus Downs and Spring Hill Country Craft Cottage. Booringa Action Group President Rob Cornish welcomed visitors and Mayor Golder. Mr Cornish also thanked the Spa staff for their work in organising the event and specifically thanked BAG Member Daryl Betzien for his generous help driving the bus and volunteering countless hours to help the organisation. Saraeva Mitchell talked about the upcoming Yumba Reunion and what is happening at the Yumba while Lynette Nixon performed a lovely Welcome to Country.

The Mitchell Arts scene is buzzing at the moment with great exhibitions, a quilt show on the horizon and a major acting award for local teen Jake Harrison. The Mitchell on Maranoa Gallery hosted Patricia Hinz’ excellent exhibition ‘Insights and Outcomes’ in May. Guests flowed to the opening, appreciated the colour the talented artist uses to capture the bush and purchased many pieces. The exhibition will be followed by the highly anticipated Kenniff Country Quilters Annual Quilt Show opening on Saturday June 2, 2018. Mrs Natalie Golder will open the show at an afternoon tea at 2:30pm which costs $8 for adults or $5 for concessions. The Kenniff Country Quilters have also been busy catering at Spring Hill Craft Retreat’s Open Day where they raised over $330 in raffle for the RFDS with Jan Chambers the lucky winner of the goodie basket. If you’d like to join them, the Quilters meet the second Sunday of each month, all welcome, sewing experience is not required but a machine is. Meanwhile, at the Gold Coast Film Festival, seventeen year old Mitchell Actor Jake Harrison was named Best Actor for playing ‘Sam’ in short film Skin Like Bark. Jake’s family are extremely proud of his success and he is a role model for other young locals looking to pursue a career in the arts, well done Jake!

On July 5,6,7 and 8 an arts immersion program called ‘Ngulalma Ngalinda - Because of her we can’; will be held on the banks of the three water sources and spiritual place of the Gunggari peoples at the 22 Mile Creek. The workshop and subsequent Showcase Exhibition are part of NAIDOC week celebrations. Keep an eye out on the next edition for more details or contact Joan Hurtado ([email protected] or 0438090538) or Jude Roberts ([email protected]). Maranoa Arts Gateway has something for tourists and locals alike, with plenty of hand knitted beanies and scarves perfect for chilly Mitchell winter nights. There are some very talented artisans in Mitchell and the work available is second to none. The Arts Gateway supports

local craft and arts people by encouraging quality work and providing recognition for the talent we have in the community. Supporting MAG helps many people in the community find a niche for their creative skills and gives value to arts in Mitchell.

Injune Arts Inc. opened the Santos Injune Art Show on Friday May 4 to a crowd of approximately 70 visitors and locals. Showcasing art and artists from across the Maranoa and Arcadia Valley regions this annual exhibition is highly anticipated with a range of art forms including painting, photography, pottery and craft illustrating the theme of Our Country, Our Life. Taking centre-stage this year was a large and rustic sculpture from Injune welder Paul Jones. Titled Block Up it featured a working dog blocking a cow and was set upon a roll of fence netting. So popular was this exhibit that it sold within minutes of the show opening. Opening night was a casual and friendly affair with Santos representative Mat Gane once again opening the show. Santos has been a long and proud supporter of Injune Arts and their sponsorship is most appreciated by the community. Visitors and locals mingled together, enjoyed complementary finger food and listened to the country tunes of singer Chris Pritchard. Many works were sold on the night but not the People’s Choice, a spectacular folded art windmill sunset by Injune local Karen Sellars. Although not for sale Karen took orders on the night for similar pieces. Some of the art on display was created at a Kim Noon workshop held in Injune in April and supported by the Regional Arts Development Fund, which contributed towards the development of artistic talent in the area. The Santos Injune Art Show will run until July 2 at the Injune Creek Gallery. For more information please ring 07 4626 0502.

Autumn has been a busy season for horse sports in Injune with the Golden Bit Campdraft held on April 21 and 22, and the Injune Rodeo on May 5. And the fun is not over with the Santos Injune Cup to be held on June 9. The Golden Bit Campdraft hosted over 100 locals and travellers from across the state, and saw not only experienced campdrafters in action but the next generation also strutting their stuff with fearless riders on equally fearless horses. Penny Duggan from Morven won the open draft, Paul Christiansen won the stallion draft and most successful local competitor was Cameron Lee. The campdraft also included a popular gymkhana for the kids on Sunday morning. Barrel racing, saddle-bronc, bull riding and unicorn races all contributed to the 2018 Injune Pro Rodeo. The event was well attended with some riders competing in Injune before travelling to Goondiwindi for a second rodeo on the Saturday night, showing a real dedication to their sport. President Ken Fien said it was a very successful rodeo and thanked all the supporters from the Maranoa Regional Council to the volunteers who served behind the bar. The work now starts for the 2019 event. The annual Santos GLNG Injune Cup will be held on June 9 at the Injune racecourse commencing at 1.00pm. Free children’s rides, fashions of the field, a calcutta on the cup and great bush racing will ensure a memorable family day out.

Beautiful and moving was how the inaugural Anzac Day dawn service held at Gunnewin was described by some of the well over 100 people who attended. Held on the site where the memorial stones have been erected honouring the original settlers of the Mount Hutton Lands, the service paid tribute to the settlers who were mainly returned soldiers from World War One. A dawn service was also held at Injune attracting visitors and truck drivers, who parked their rigs and delayed their journeys for the service conducted by Peter O’Connor. The Injune March commenced at 10.00am and included returned soldiers, representatives of the Roma 11th Light Horse, Injune State School, Injune Pony Club and members of the emergency services. The march ended at the Injune Memorial Hall where the service was led by Fiona Caffery. Rodney Scantlebury evoked emotion as he spoke of the wives, children and parents of soldiers who did not come home, describing war widows who grieved, persevered and endured as “great women and mothers – I salute you.” Representatives of the Injune State School, including Charlee O’Donohue, Billy Gray, Riley Sorensen and Ashton Hornick also contributed to the service and teacher Jess Schofield played the Last Post on saxophone.

A special presentation was made to Peter O’Connor. Peter served for twenty years in the Royal Australian Airforce and saw overseas duty in Vietnam, Malaysia and Europe, including extraction exercises with the SAS. He now pours his heart and soul into keeping Anzac pride alive in Injune. His Certificate of Appreciation was in “recognition of relentless dedication and immense contribution to the RSL Injune Sub-branch and Anzac Day events”. Well done and thank you, Peter.

The Eumamurrin Recreation Association will be holding a Cocktail Gala evening, called the ‘Raise the Roof Gala’ on June 16 to help raise funds to replace the ceiling in the Eumamurrin Hall. Popular Toowoomba band ‘Back N Business’ who have supported the likes of Paul Kelly and Troy Casser-Daley, will entertain the crowd and Sue Elm is catering. As well as raising funds, the gala aims to raise the spirits of people struggling with drought by giving them the opportunity for a fun social night out mixing with friends. This year Anzac Day was commemorated in Yuleba with a Dawn Service, an Anzac March and a Morning Service. Numbers were very strong with over 200 attending the Dawn Service and more than that at the march and mid-morning service Pastor Don Roberts was the guest speaker at both services and his message was warmly received. The Anzac March was led by Mike Carroll from the Yuleba Memorial Hall to the War Memorial in Stephenson Street. The Wallumbilla State School Concert Band provided the music for the March as well as the music for the anthems and hymn. The singing was led by Tammy Bell. Mike Carroll also read a family World War 1 letter from the front. Special mention must go to Sam Collier from Wallumbilla State School for the great job in

playing the Last Post and the Rouse at both services. Following the 9.00am service, morning tea was served in the Yuleba Memorial Hall where memorabilia was on display. Our thanks go to all who contributed to make the day memorable and special.

The Benderoo Bulls Junior Rugby League Club kicked off the 2018 season by participating in the traditional March Past, held in Roma on Saturday April 21. All clubs in the Roma and District competition participated, which provided a great display for the parents and supporters watching from the sidelines. The players marched to the Cultural Centre for the official opening before heading off to various Roma venues to play the first games of the season.

The Bulls have teams in all grades, from U6 through to U14, with nearly 70 players signing up for the 2018 season. All teams have performed well in the early rounds with improvements being seen each week. The club will be hosting seven home games this season in Wallumbilla and Surat which will give the local residents plenty of opportunities to watch the Bulls in action. Representative competition is also in full swing, with several Bulls players selected for rep teams across various age groups. We congratulate these players and wish them well for their rep competitions. The U14s again competed in the Outback Carnival competition this year, which sees them play against teams from Charleville, Roma, Wandoan and St George. The boys played extremely well reaching second place on the ladder going into the final round. The team was missing quite a few players on finals day due to rep duties and injuries, so didn’t score a place in the Grand Final game. They still played their hardest and their coach, Grant Harland was impressed with their never say die attitude. Jackson & Noonga 2018 Anzac Day Commemoration Service A few years ago, the late Ella Robinson organised an ANZAC Day service at the Playshed in Jackson. She had envisaged this to be an annual event and this year members of Jackson and Noonga communities combined and commemorated ANZAC Day. It was a very pleasant setting under the trees to hold such a significant ceremony. Terry Hyland was MC and invited everyone to lay wreaths and poppies. Children of the district Payton and Cory Leahy and Monty Hindman played their part in the service by reading poems and prayers. Fiona Sinnamon and Rowan Davidson read out the Roll of Honour for both Jackson and Woleebee districts. This year was the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Villiers-Bretonneux and Brian Sinnamon explained the significance of this event in ending the German offensive on the Somme. He also spoke of this grandfather, Walter John Sinnamon’s, role in WW1. A extract of of his speech is below. Special thanks must be given to Polly Leahy who shared the same vision as Ella to again hold an Anzac Day service and make it an annual event. She contacted the Anzac Day Commemorative Committee who supplied the plaque which will eventually be attached to a memorial stone to remember all those from the Jackson District who fought not just in WW1 but in all the other conflicts Australia has been involved in. The committee also donated Anzac Day books which were presented to Elwyn Park for the Jackson Library and the children of the district.

Following the service and a group photo, everyone was invited to the CWA hall for refreshments. Excerpt from Brian Sinnamon’s speech: On this day the 25th April we remember the wars of the past and

think about the soldiers fighting in the present conflicts overseas. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the battle of Villers-Bretonneux and the signing of the armistice on the 11th of November 1918. The battle of Villers-Bretonneux in France, and the subsequent pushing back of German forces, has been described as a crucial turning point in World War I. But it came at a high cost with 2400 Australian soldiers killed. The soldiers were well aware that this was 3 years after Gallipoli and they had an opportunity to commemorate it with a special exploit. They overcame the Germans north of the town in a famous charge. By the dawn of April 25, the Australians had broken through the German Entrenchment. It took the rest of the day and into the next to secure Villers-Bretonneux and create a new front line to the east ending the German offensive on the Somme. My Grandfather took part in this battle and many others on the Somme. While in France he was wounded twice once in the chest and the other in the shoulder and survived with the help of his paybook which deflected the bullet. A piece of shrapnel from one of these injuries stayed in his body until he passed away.

Jackson and Noonga Community Meeting. The next Jackson and Noonga Community meeting will be held on Monday June 18 at 10.00am at Noonga. If you have any items you would like to be put on the agenda please contact Fiona Sinnamon prior to the day.

East Coast Pipelines are in the process of building a gas pipeline from Reedy Creek north of Yuleba to the gas hub south of Wallumbilla for APA Group. Recently a fundraising auction was held to raise money for Wallumbilla State School, Yuleba State School and Wallumbilla Men’s Shed. Many contractors and local businesses donated items for the auction at Bungaroo Camp. Matt Morrow of East Coast Pipelines and Ian Crombie from APA Group attended Yuleba State School to present a cheque for $6600 to the P & C Association. P & C President Karan Hibbs thanked both Matt and Ian for their generous support for Yuleba State School and indicated that some of the funds would go towards the bus for the school camp as well as a subsidy for the school camp fees.
