In a time where print media is considered dead, it is a great testament to the work of the Maranoa community and Maranoa Regional Council that this small publication continues to be printed and appreciated in households across the district. The Bottle Tree Bulletin is what you, dear reader, make it. It is a place for community groups to publicise their events. First and foremost, it is a publication that is all about good news and that is very refreshing in our current political and media climate. The fact that the Bottle Tree Bulletin has bought up its century is almost entirely thanks to the dedicated team of correspondents and contributors who each month keep their ear to the ground and cameras at the ready to snap up any exciting news and send it in to the Editor Without their ongoing hard work and invaluable contributions, we simply wouldn’t be able to publish a Bulletin. In this month’s edition…

the bottle tree BULLETIN

The Bottle Tree Bulletin reaches a very impressive milestone this month - 100 issues, not out! A space to celebrate the achievements of the brilliant people and groups who make our towns tick. An opportunity to pass on messages for those whose voices may not otherwise be heard. The funding from Maranoa Regional Council has also been key to continuing to provide this publication. Heres to bringing up our double tonne in a few years time! If you would like to make a submission in the future, please do not hesitate to email your local Correspondent (details listed underneath the calendar on Page 12) or the Editor via [email protected].

Sometime on the evening of the of December 5, 2018 the Muckadilla Memorial was allegedly vandalised . Police have some information but if anyone has more it would be greatly appreciated if you could pass it on to them. Forensics have been and taken all the information they can but as this is beside a major highway someone must of seen something.

The Muckadilla community is a proud little community and to have something like this happen is very disappointing.

The water was a little low but this didn’t lower the enthusiasm of the local fishermen and women of Mitchell. The boats were out the lines were in, the zinc was spread and hats were on, cheers and yells were heard up and down the river as one by one the slippery little fish were coaxed into the boats or onto the banks of the mighty Maranoa. The fish were weighed, measurements were taken and the results are in. Biggest Yellow belly ~ Adult Male Bindi Newton 44cm, Adult female Bronwyn Weber 36cm, Junior male Cruize Ferguson 43cm, Junior girl Tempy Henderson 40.5cm. On Friday November 30, 2018 the St Patrick’s School community came together to celebrate another successful year. The specially invited guests included Father Jamie, Jeff Watson, Mayor Tyson Golder, Member for Warrego Ann Leahy, Sister Nora, Deputy Mayor Jan Chambers, Aunty Lynette Nixon and Geoff McMullen. It was an evening to celebrate achievements and thank many people who made tremendous contributions to the school in 2018. The Academic Awards/Christmas Concert was a fabulous evening of fun and it was great to see so many grandparents, friends and family join in the celebrations. Three Diligence awards were presented to Keelie Moody (Prep/Yr1), Grace Clark (Year 3-4) and Tamsin Symonds (Year 5-6). These students have applied themselves in all learning areas throughout the year, reaching their potential through hard work, dedication and commitment to their education. Three Academic Awards were also presented and the winners were Zac Tetlow (Year 4), Leela Corbet (Year 5), and Joshua Cross (Year 6). These students had achieved the best results in their year level, across all learning areas throughout the school year. This year we also presented our attendance award. This award went to the student that attended school for the most days and was won by Maggie Butler.

The Aunty Irene Memorial Award was awarded to a student who displayed excellence in representing and embracing the indigenous culture in everything they do and that was Mia Wilkinson. Finally, Joshua Cross took home the Catherine McCauley Award, presented to a student who displays the Mercy values and attributes of the Mercy Sisters, in all that they say and do here at St Patrick’s and the Norah Fallon Bursary. Congratulations to all the children that have received awards. You are very deserving recipients of these awards, and may you continue to strive for excellence in all that you do. The evening concluded with a Christmas Concert which brought lots of laughter and smiles to all. Following the awards night, seven Year Six students celebrated their Graduation with a Mass at St Columba’s. The Graduation Mass was a formal evening to reflect, share and celebrate with their close family and friends their memories of the years at St Patrick’s School, a ending of a chapter in their book of life and a beginning of a new chapter as they move onto year seven at a different school. Mia Wilkinson, Josh Cross, Sterling Gould, Talon Wallace, Tamsin Symonds & Faith Bond, in 2019 will all start a new and exciting chapter. This was also a time to farewell an amazing teacher who has been with St Patrick’s for six years. Miss Amy Davis will be starting her new chapter in St Andrews in Toowoomba and will be missed greatly by her peers, students and their parents.

It’s Christmas time again and what better way to get us all in the festive spirit than the annual Christmas in the Park at the Mitchell Memorial Park. Locals and visitors were treated to some lovely Christmas plays and carols by the students from Mitchell State School and St Patrick’s School Mitchell. The Rotary Club jumping castle, Karly’s face painting and Santa’s arrival in a police car were a hit with the kids. The stalls presenting their tempting gifts and delights of oils, jewellery, plants, embroidered towels, handmade bags, candles and much more gave the adults an opportunity to purchase those special gift for Christmas, and for those looking for something sweeter there was the homemade cake and sweets stall. It wouldn’t be Christmas in the Park without the Rotary Clubs Ham Wheel, some very lucky people took home a delicious ham from Lawson’s Butchery, and of course the Christmas Hamper – a wheelbarrow full of fabulous goodies donated by local businesses. The winning ticket belonged to Kyline Norrman who will enjoy a very Merry Christmas. The food was done to perfection, with melt in the mouth hamburgers and sausages that could be washed down with a nice cold drink from the bar or softdrink van. The rotary Club of Mitchell and Booringa Action Group would like to thank everyone who helped out and attended to make it a lovely family night out once again.

Mitchell state school art exhibition opened on December 3, with an interesting display from year 7 – 10 art classes. A selection of pencil sketches, paintings and sculptures each piece telling it’s own story were on display until December 13, 2018. The students have used many different techniques and mediums to create some very thought provoking pieces.

What do you get when you mix forty eight energy filled kids, some amazingly gifted instructors, absolutely fabulous organisers and brilliant chefs in the kitchen? Shout it out loud kids – The Mitchell -Tomoo/ Dunkeld ICPA SWAG CAMP of course. The kids had an amazing, fun filled four days at the SWAG Camp. Activities included swimming, gymnastics, painting, making chooks, canoeing, netball, cricket, football and the list goes on. Keep an eye out for the February edition where there will be a full article and photos on all the fun and laughter that happened.

This year’s recipient of the Norah Fallon Bursary was Joshua Cross from St. Patrick’s Mitchell. This

bursary was established in 2005 by Mr. Terry Fallon in memory of his mother Mrs. Norah Fallon and is administered by a group of trustees. The value of the bursary is $6000 which is to be used to assist further education expenses such as the purchase of books, equipment, tuition or residential expenses and is paid at $1000 per year during the following six years. This year the Trustees also awarded an extra bursary with a value of $4000, this was awarded to Alex Cox from the Mitchell State School. Congratulations to both Joshua and Alex. The standard of applications received were outstanding making it a very difficult decision. The Trustees wish to thank all applicants for submitting their application and wish them well in the future. Students in years 6 in Mitchell, Mungallala, Dunkeld or students of the Mitchell area, School of Distance Education, are eligible for the bursary and applications are called in October of each year. Applications are sent to all of these schools.

Injune did not escape the horrendous fire conditions that swept across Queensland at the end of November and beginning of December with a large fire on Sunday November 25 threatening the town’s main employer Injune Cypress. The fire destroyed stock piles of logs but over 20 firefighters from town and rural brigades from Injune and Roma worked to bring it under control before it could burn the mill. Glenn and Leanne Wilson from Injune Cypress would like to extend a special thanks to all the firefighters and to their workers who also assisted to put out the fire. Two days were spent cleaning up and the mill re-opened on Wednesday November 28. A concurrent fire was burning in the Carnarvon Ranges with over 50 firefighters, including a crew from Victoria and a helicopter, in attendance. These fires are a timely reminder to everybody to prepare for the fire season with a bushfire survival plan – clear buildings and infrastructure of excess vegetation, clean gutters and have an escape plan for both people and animals, and when concerned to ring 000. More fire preparation information can be found by ringing the Roma Office of the Queensland Rural Fire Service on 4578 0045, or visiting websites for QRF (www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au) and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (www.qfes.qld.gov.au). And while we’re all enjoying the festive season, let’s take time to buy a beer for our emergency service personnel! In other fire-related news if you saw some strange orange-suited bubble-figures wandering around town on November 17 and

18 it was just Injune’s QFES team in training. Brian McKeesick, Adan Wilson, Tara Monteith and Gavin Kerr (and Noah Gill from Surat) were undergoing hazmat (hazardous material) training under the direction of Regional Training Officer Stewart Lange from Toowoomba. “We were training the new fire-fighters in specialist PPE equipment, with the greatest degree of safety,” Stewart said. “This allows fire-fighters to access, identify and put in place mitigation procedures should there be a hazardous chemical or vapour incident.” The fully enclosed PPE suits, with their self-contained breathing apparatus and heavy chemical-resistant material illustrated to the firefighters the challenges of working in a hazmat environment.

Injune Arts Inc ended the 2018 year with a bang with the opening of the final exhibition, Woman2Woman, on November 30. This emotive display by Maranoa photographers Katrina Ayres and Katarina Silvester profiled many local women, gently showing the many facets of a woman’s life and how their connection creates community. Some images portrayed the joy and heartbreak of childbirth, others represented struggles with illness and many celebrated the wonderful stories of what it means to be a woman. At the opening Katrina spoke of her experiences as she ventured into photography and was supported by the women of Injune at a two-day workshop. “It was such a supportive circle and very close to my heart,” she said. “That is why it is so important to open Woman2Woman here.” While sharing their

stories and giving women a voice was the focus of the evening the photographers also paid tribute to the men and in particular the Men’s Shed who were manning the bar. “Where would we be without our men?” they asked.

End of year celebrations were a big part of Injune in December, kicking off with the Injune Pony Club who held their presentation on November 25. Awards presented included: Pony Clubber of the Year – Jack Cosh; Bessie Stride Perpetual Trophy – Ryleigh Bonisch; Patrons Trophy – Hayden Henricks; Most Improved Boy Rider – Ryan Henricks; Most Improved Girl Rider - Ryleigh Bonisch; Best Presented – Holly Paul; Outstanding Achievement – Zoe Cosh; President’s Trophy – Hayden Henricks; Instructor’s Trophy – Charlee O’Donohue. Ladies from Injune Patchworkers also made a presentation of hand-made quilts to the Brazier boys, who are moving to Roma next year. “They (the patchwork ladies) are an awesome group,” said the boys’ Billie-jo Nichols. Next up was the Naturally Resourceful Women who held their Christmas party at The

Barn at Wallumbilla on November 29. Twenty-eight ladies enjoyed a delicious and festive lunch and Secret Santa meant everyone went home with a gift. The streets of Injune were lined with vehicles on November 30 as 90 people attended the ever-popular Santos-sponsored Christmas senior’s lunch. Karel-Anne Collie and her team - Casandra Sorensen, Nicki Parker, Tracey Allen, Veronica Pringle, Christie Kelly, Donna O'Donohue, Shirley Tyrie and Josh Rolfe – once again did an outstanding job and also involved students from Injune State School who served the meal, did the cleaning up and provided the entertainment. On Saturday December 1 the Eumamurrin Gun Club held their annual Christmas shoot. The night was well supported with 50 shooters turning up to try their luck at winning some Christmas hams and hampers. There were three events held on the day as well as the shoot off for the high gun and low gun

bragging rights for the year. This was eventually taken out by Jack Bischoff (High Gun – best of the best) and Jack Carne (Low Gun- worst of the worst). These trophies were kindly made by Danny Sutton. The night was finished off with a shared Christmas Dinner and plenty of Christmas cheer! The club would like to thank their supporters throughout the year and wish all a Merry Christmas and hopefully a wet new year. Also celebrating on December 22 were Ken and Joan Newton who have been married for fifty years. Congratulations.

Recently, the Catholic Parish of Wallumbilla, Yuleba and Jackson held their Annual Picnic at Judd’s Lagoon beside the water. Members from other Christian denominations joined with the congregation to celebrate the year in a relaxed atmosphere. The weather was warm with a sunny aspect and a cooling breeze. Prayers were offered for rain to break the drought. Father Jamie conducted Mass with a lovely backdrop of the lagoon and everyone shared a picnic lunch.

The Blue Light Association recently conducted their fourth Bingo afternoon for the year in the Yuleba Memorial Hall. There were great prizes, delicious afternoon tea and high excitement as Mr A called the numbers. Shouts of BINGO rang out across the hall. Everyone seemed to win a prize with some players taking out multiple prizes. The night before the fourth Blue Light Disco for the year was held with 24 young people enjoying a night of dancing and games. Toby and Aiden Tiley were in charge of the music and Kristy Welk and Rebecca Patch organized the games. A great night was had by all.

The Bendemere Pony Club held their annual presentation and break up recently. Families enjoyed a BBQ lunch at the Wallumbilla Park, before heading to the pool for a quick cool off before the storm hit! Award recipients were as follows: Mertyl Melon Award for Best Presented – Claire Harland Gwen E Griffin Award for Consistency – Keonie Proud Cheryl Harland Award for Most Improved – Lauren Harland Michael Golden Award for Sportsmanship – Kealey Harland David Golden Award for Best & Fairest – Billy Harland Chief Instructor’s Award – Dallas Price Brett Griffin kindly attended to help present the awards. The club appreciates the

continued support from past members and families. The committee would like to thank the following businesses for their support throughout the year: Midwest Rural Traders, Brenorrs, Horse Torque, Newrybar Rugs, Goodwood’s Saddlery, Riverina Stockfeeds, Landmark Mitchell, Sunshine Hardware & Rural, Yuleba Hotel Motel & Diner, Horseland Toowoomba and Yuleba General Store. The Annual General Meeting will be held early in 2019. New members are welcome and encouraged to attend. For information about the club please call either Tammy Harland 0439 671 828 or Janet Harland 0439 764 165.

In country towns, schools are focal centres of activity. Learning by day, community hub by night. In Yuleba like many of the outlying communities in the South West, we are always looking for ways to improve the educational experience for our students and families. In 2019, Yuleba State School meets the eligibility criteria to participate in the State Delivered Kindergarten program (previously Remote Kindy Pilot). Schools participating in the State Delivered Kindergarten program meet certain eligibility criteria, including being at least 50km by the most direct route by road from an approved kindergarten service. This means that Yuleba SS can offer a kindergarten program, five days a fortnight (30 hours) from 2019. This is a significant positive for children and is also valuable for this community. Parents will not have to travel to Roma to access a kindergarten program.

It was something that this community and the surrounding district have been looking for. To provide the Kindergarten opportunity for the communities of Yuleba, Wallumbilla, Jackson and Noonga will be an excellent educational experience. We welcome all interested families with eligible 4 year olds (children must be 4 years old by 30 June 2019) to register their interest with the school. Eligibility for families in the program also includes a commitment that children attend each day the kindy program operates.

On Friday October 29, 2018, Wallumbilla School celebrated its 125th Anniversary at a presentation at the Wallumbilla Memorial Hall. Drama students from Years 5 to 10 commemorated this milestone with a tribute to 1893’s newly formed town progress association – known today as the Wallumbilla Town Improvement Group. The association, desperate for a school for the dozens of children in the area, had been lobbying the Queensland Department of Public Instruction repeatedly over two years from 1891, imploring the department to approve its application for a school… It gives us immense pain … to see so many children going losing their valuable time of childhood and youth without the education which they are justly entitled to have… There is now here a population of between 400 and 500 and no school for the children...if this little help is withdrawn our children will have to grow up in utter… ignorance. By 1893 the group was triumphant – Wallumbilla School would open in October with the following students recorded at the class of 1893: William Williams, William Spence, Annetta Gazzard, George Todd, Harvey Gazzard, Arthur Caswell, George Henderson, Florence Teague, Gladys Gazzard, Annie Hamilton, May Teague, Garg. Miklejohn, Stanley Yeo, James Hamilton, Alex Ferguson, George Doyle, Edith Teague, Ruby Mogridge, Bella Hamilton, Elsie Yeo, James Doyle, Agnes Fiedler, Oliver Caswell, Frederick Stolz, Otto Fiedler, Elimie Stolz, Edward Andrews, John Budd, Olga Jorgenson, Nellie Clayphen, Ethel Mogridge, Helena Alice Doyle, Martin Andrews, Lily Teague, Mary J. Spence, Mary Hamilton, Ada Pick, Gertrude Howes,

Margaret Jorgenson, Bella Ferguson, Bernard Smith, William Hewitt, Olga Johansen, Bessie Godwin, Matilda Hewitt, Annie Measures, Thomas Bishop, James Swan, Thomas Conroy, Bertie Hewitt, Thomas Davis, Violet Davis, Amelia Ferguson, George Holmes, Frederick Holes, Herbert Whitty. The anniversary celebrations continued after the tribute with students presenting their award-winning Roma Eisteddfod items, a Fraser Coast challenge display and a tribute to ‘Mock Rock’. Long serving staff members Debra Howse, Shawnie Maunder and Dell Leahy cut the anniversary cake with current School Captains, Jessie Maunder and Thomas York.
