PROGRAM NOTESD’ADDONA: Grand Fanfare

Venezuelan composer Giancarolo Castro D’Addona was born into a family of musicians and pursued the trumpet before becoming involved as a com-poser in El Sistema. His education stemmed from the Conservatory Vicente Emilio Sojo in Barquisimeto and the University Institute of Musical Studies in Caracas, and his work has been recorded by EMI Classics and EuroArts.

An exciting and virtuosic showpiece composed for the Venezuelan Brass En-semble, Grand Fanfare paints a dramatic vista of the Venezuelan countryside by showcasing all of the instruments in the ensemble to generate an exuber-ant energy.

BALMAGES: Symphony No. 1 for Brass

One of Brian Balmages’ earliest compositions, Symphony No. 1 for Brass, was written and premiered in 1998 by Balmages. An active composer, conduc-tor, producer and trumpeter, Balmages’ compositions have been performed at conferences worldwide, including the Midwest Clinic, International Tuba/Euphonium Conference, International Trombone Festival and the Interna-tional Trumpet Guild Conference. Balmages has enjoyed commissions and premieres by many ensembles, including the Baltimore Symphony Orches-tra, Miami Symphony Orchestra and the Dominion Brass Ensemble. He cur-rently serves as the Director of Instrumental Publications for The FJH Music Company Inc.

RAUTAVAARA: A Requiem in Our Time

Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara completed his studies in musicolo-gy at the University of Helsinki and received his diploma in composition from the Sibelius Academy in Finland. In 1955, he was chosen by Jean Sibelius to receive a fellowship from the Koussevitsky Foundation for advanced study in the U.S., which took place at the Juilliard School with Vincent Persichetti

and at Tanglewood with Aaron Copland and Roger Sessions. After further study in Switzerland and Germany, he began lecturing at the Sibelius Acad-emy and was later appointed artist professor and professor of composition. His extensive compositions encompass a wide variety of genres, including opera, orchestral, choral, piano and chamber works.

A Requiem in Our Time was composed in 1953 and won the Thor Johnson Brass Composition award the following year. This piece is heavily influenced by the neo-Classical tendencies of Stravinsky and makes use of serial tech-niques. The work is in four movements: the first, marked Festivamente, con-tains fanfares of praise. The second movement is translated as “belief and doubt,” and two themes (one agitated and the other chorale-like) are heard in juxtaposition. The third movement incorporates the Dies Irae (Latin for “day of wrath”) and the fourth movement, Lacrymosa, is a song of mourn-ing marked Larghetto tranquillo. This piece is dedicated to the memory of Rautavaara’s mother.

TOMASI: Fanfare Liturgiques

Henri Tomasi was born in Marseilles in 1901 and studied first at the conser-vatory in his home city and then at the Paris Conservatory, where he won the Prix de Rome in 1927. He lead a double career as conductor and com-poser, conducting many of the finest orchestras in Europe while performing his own music and that of Saint-Saens, Gluck, Massenet, Ravel, Debussy and Wagner, among others. It was, however, composing that meant the most to him. Although his two operas, L’Atlantide and Miguel Mañara, established his reputation, his concertos for solo instruments and orchestra are especially important. Fanfares Liturgiques depicts four aspects of Christianity using colorful, in-tense and contrasting styles. It is unified by the use of a head-motif consist-ing of a rising fifth followed by a rising fourth, encompassing an octave. Annonciation refers to the announcement by the Angel Gabriel to the Vir-gin Mary that she was to bear the Son of God. The subdued middle section evokes a sense of humility of the Virgin, with a brief recall of the opening sec-

tion dramatizing the significance of the event. Evangile refers to the “good news” of salvation through Christ, with the head motif proclaimed in three-part harmonies in the trumpets, followed by rhythmic variations by the tim-pani and, finally, lead by a trombone into a dialogue between the horns and trombones and joined at the very end by the trumpets. Apocalypse foreshad-ows the end of the world, and the Procession du Vendredi-Saint presents a solemn march, beginning with soft percussion and lower brass. This is tem-porarily replaced by a chorale-like section by the entire ensemble. The march returns briefly at the end, providing a brilliant conclusion.

LARRY ISAACSON, conductor—began his career at the age of 19, performing as an extra with the Chi-cago Symphony at Carnegie Hall. A former trombonist, he has per-formed worldwide in concert and on recordings with many of Amer-ica’s finest ensembles, including the Empire Brass Quintet, San Fran-cisco Symphony, Boston Pops, Bos-ton Symphony, Boston Symphony Chamber Players, Detroit Symphony and the San Diego Symphony. Born into a family of musicians and edu-cators, Isaacson has continued the family tradition, currently serving as associate director of the music divi-sion at The Boston Conservatory. He is a former faculty member of

the Massachusetts Institute of Tech-nology (MIT), New England Con-servatory (NEC), Boston University, Tufts University, University of New Hampshire, Mannes College of Mu-sic, McMaster University and Boston University’s Tanglewood Institute. A regular guest conductor at the As-pen Music Festival, Isaacson is cur-rently music director and conductor of Symphony Nova, a professional training orchestra that he founded in 2007.
