HE ECONOMY SHOWS signs of recovery and luxury products are pushing their way back into the hearts of consumers. After years of sacri ce, U.S. travelers are ready to give in and go. And they aren’t just looking for any vacation; they want their money’s worth—life-changing experiences and high-end treatment, especially when it's out of the ordinary or off the beaten path.

Virtuoso’s 2011 Luxe Report found elite clientele increased travel purchases by 36 percent from 2009 to 2010, with luxury, inter-national, leisure trips as the vacation of choice. Luxury sales for 2011 are already up 15 to 20 percent, according to the travel rm. Numbers released by Smith Travel Research, the foremost research house in the hotel industry, supports the Luxe Report, showing very strong growth rates for luxury and upscale hotels in domestic and international markets as the sector rebounds in 2011.

But industry trends don’t guarantee agent success. For luxury travel agents—and those who aspire to build this segment of their business—it is critical to understand this point: The advice of a valued travel consultant is one of the greatest in uences on luxury travel purchasing, but the agent must be clearly knowledgeable and fully engaged with the interests and needs of elite travelers—and be able to recommend the best products available.

In this issue of Travel Weekly’s Best of Luxury Travel, we’ll look at several “authentic” and exclusive travel opportunities that will speak to travelers who have “done it all” yet are looking for some-thing new. From glamorous tent resorts in South Africa and rural estates in Napa to private islands in the Caribbean and the jet-set excitement of Dubai or Monaco, the options for unique luxury travel are within reach, as is the opportunity to build this desirable segment of your business.

MUSTIQUE ST. VINCENT & THE GRENADINES, WEST INDIESRental villas come with their own dedicated staff, including private cook, and are stocked with guests’ favorite foods and drinks, shipped in from St. Vincent the fi rst day of stay. The island concierge arranges all activities and services upon request.

THE WAKAYA CLUB & SPA WAKAYA ISLAND, FIJI ISLANDSThis resort boasts cabin stays at different levels of luxury, with all meals and beverages, laundry service, two scuba tank dives per person per day, as well as unlimited use of mini bar and unlimited use of sporting facilities included.

MUSHA CAY GREAT EXUMA, BAHAMASAll houses are decorated in exotic treasure from around the world and host their own private beach, while the island itself offers an outdoor movie theater, state-of-the-art gym, massage therapists, and an array of water sports and dining facilities, among other services.

THE RANIA EXPERIENCE MALDIVESUnlimited a la carte dining; spa treatments and therapies; island hopping; deep sea, line and reel fi shing; sunset and moonlight cruises; local island explorations and butler service are just some of the features included in these private stays.

CAYO ESPANTO BELIZEPrivate villas host onsite massage therapists, private chefs cooking to guests’ personal preferences and an attentive personal staff, while the island offers activities such as snorkel-ing, scuba diving and unbelievable fl y fi shing.

NO DREAM IS TOO FAR-FETCHED—that could be the motto of any luxury travel agent, but it takes real knowledge and connections to deliver on dreams. Private islands offer an exclusive—and rather ex-pensive—way to woo luxury travelers off the beaten path and to an experience that they would be unlikely to access without the help of an agent.

These deserted yet sought-after play-grounds range from exclusive-use, some-times privately owned, where guests have the entire island to themselves; to group rentals, housing multiple villas for group bookings; and private island resorts, usual-ly company owned, where guests can book a private villa stay, while a few others on the island do the same. Some islands also offer the choice of full- or partial-island rentals, depending upon the length of stay and availability.

The perks of a private island escape are plentiful, but the best part is that everything should be accessible at the whim of the cli-ent. The experience should come complete with a private chef to prepare guests’ every meal, private yachts and boat charters to lead them off-island on requested excur-sions, private beaches for secluded relax-

ation, and, of course, private jets to get guests there and back. Exclusive attention (but only when it is requested) creates the thrill of these exclusive stays—and the real treat of being almost completely alone.

Private island prices obviously depend upon the level of exclusivity as well as location, popularity and season. But, for the most part, these stays range anywhere in the thousands- to million-dollar-a-night stays, with an average falling somewhere in the tens of thousands for a single night. While this is no trip for the price-conscious traveler, private island villa-resorts are the most reasonable way to go when it comes to this exclusive travel market.

Indeed, decadent, luxury villas grace shorelines of many private island retreats and are equipped with a full staff ready to serve travelers’ every need, from house-cleaning and laundry service to gourmet cooking and requested spa treatments. Some islands even include private butler service per villa.

Luxury travelers looking for an ultra-pampered escape will yearn for these elite retreats, where just about anything is pos-sible.

AFFLUENT ADVENTURESSERENGETI MIGRATION CAMP SERENGETI, TANZANIAThis tented camp, overlooking the Grumeti River and its resident hippos, hosts game drives into Serengeti National Park, walks along the river, bird watching, views of the world’s greatest mammal migration, and balloon safaris.

CLAYOQUOT WILDERNESS RESORT TOFINO, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADAThis eco-destination sits at the mouth of the Bedwell River, offering horseback riding, kayaking, whale watching, bear watching, hiking, fi shing, zip lining, shooting, archery and mountain biking.

BANYAN TREE MADIVARU MADIVARU, MALDIVESSet on an island in the Maldives, these tented pool villa retreats offer all-inclusive activities, such as diving, sunset cruises, morning and night fi shing, dolphin safaris, manta sighting cruises and other marine adventures.

TENIQUA TREETOPS WESTERN CAPE, SOUTH AFRICAThis tented tree house resort on the foothills of the ancient Outeniqua mountain range boasts Knysna For-est tours, mountain biking, sailing, canoeing, rappelling, quadbiking and beach horseback riding.

WHITEPOD RESORT LES CERNIERS, SWITZERLANDNestled in the charming village of Les Cerniers in the heart of the Swiss Alps, this resort of luxury pods is visited for its skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, dog-sledding, paragliding, snowshoeing, sledding, ski touring, ski competitions and hiking.

THE URGE TO GET BACK TO NATURE seems ingrained in some clients’ very DNA. Bored with business travel, where they al-ready stay at upscale properties and entertain clients at top-name restaurants, luxury travel-ers want something different, open, natural… you know, travel the way they used to when they were young, but much better.

Enter, glamour camping—or “glamping” as it's become known—a growing trend in the luxury market that continues to amaze travelers with the surprisingly luxe life of Mother Nature.

These resorts offer vacations that are any-thing but roughing it—but don’t tell your clients that. These travelers do relish in the idea of becoming one with nature. They just don’t want to leave their amenities behind. So, glamour camping and luxury tent resorts strive to offer the ease of a ve-star stay in the open air of such alluring settings as the Serengeti or the Swiss Alps. It should come as no surprise, therefore, that these high-class trips do not come cheap.

Tents are the shelter of choice—in true camping style. But, these elevated accom-modations don’t house your usual sleep-ing bag and lantern; instead, they’re me-ticulously appointed with everything from

hardwood oors and opulent rugs to leather chairs and wireless Internet, looking far more like a Ralph Lauren photo shoot than a simple canvas overhang. King-sized beds dressed in luxury linens and down duvets await guests after an adventure packed day, and gourmet dinner or “room” service is de rigueur.

During the day, guests can traverse the area’s terrain with guided excursions and high-energy activities, completely pre-pared by the resorts themselves. Hiking, biking, horseback riding, kayaking, rock climbing, skiing and shing—the to-do list is never ending when it comes to the great outdoors, especially with resident experts to lead the way.

Active and adventure trips are ranked among the top ve travel trends emerging in 2011, according to Virtuoso’s 2011 Luxe Report, and for the luxury traveler, this is de nitely the way to do it. So for your cli-ents who have an appetite for adventure, but believe long hikes in the mountain air or elephant safaris in the desert sun should end with a massage and private, ve-star dining, this ultra-luxurious take on the rus-tic pleasures of youth will tap into their nostalgia for the past, but build memories for years to come.

SERENGETI MIGRATION CAMP

THE CONCEPT OF GLAMOUR CAMPING, I.E. “GLAMPING”, HIT THE LUXURY TRAVEL SCENE A FEW YEARS AGO, BUT A FEW EXPERIENCES HAVE GONE WAY BEYOND TRENDY, THANKS TO ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME DESTINATIONS AND AN ULTRA-LUXURIOUS TAKE ON THE RUSTIC VACATIONS OF YESTERYEAR.

ELITE TRAVELERS looking for excite-ment, exclusivity and elegance have more options than they once did. From traditional European glamour to glitzy Asian islands, Middle Eastern mystery to American nouveau glam, multibillion-dollar devel-opments cater to status-conscious trav-elers who want very much to see and be seen—and then want to escape to a glit-tery private enclave where the rest of the world is kept at bay.

The destinations themselves must of-fer excitement in many forms: Ornate ca-sinos, with exclusive high-stakes gaming rooms; the alluring lines of a Lamborghini or Rolls-Royce that should be handled by the valet; yachts slicing through azure-col-ored waters; exclusive art galleries; indul-gent spas that promise rejuvenation (for a price); Michelin Star-rated restaurants, with rare wines, cognacs and more. And never forget the adrenaline rush that comes from diamonds, handbags, couture clothing bou-tiques, and other conspicuous ways to spend money without a single pang of guilt.

One signi cant outlay should be cen-tered on a hotel or villa. The choice here is extremely important because as much as

jet-set travelers may want to make a pub-lic show of excess, some things are still private—if only to nurture a reputation of mystery.

Agents should look for hotels with pri-vate-access oors, or better yet, grand suites or villas with similarly restricted access. Look for onsite spas, quality chefs, trendy nightclubs, elegant pool decks with towel and sunscreen service, cabana rentals and a variety of accessible nibbles and cocktails. Such mundane concerns as laundry ser-vice, shoe shining and—let’s face it—even breakfast, should simply be taken care of. Private butlers are a plus. For anything off-site, an attentive concierge is critical.

Because status and celebrity are often important to this type of traveler, ties to movie stars, royalty, heads of state and in-ternational business moguls can in uence traveler decision-making. After all, if it's good enough for royalty…

These fantasy vacations do come at a price, sometimes in the tens of thousands of dollars per night. But if extravagant clients don’t mind shelling out big for their dreams, these incredibly glamorous destinations do not disappoint.

Utter Decadence UNSURPASSED DREAMSBURJ AL ARAB, JUMEIRAHDUBAI, UAEClaiming to be the most luxurious hotel in the world, this retreat boasts 202 spacious duplex suites featuring personal butlers, a walk-in shower and Jacuzzi/Spa bath, Hermes amenities and a private bar, while the resort itself offers world-class golf, a private beach, six award-winning signature restaurants and yacht charters.

THE VENETIAN MACAO-RESORT-HOTEL MACAU, CHINAWith 3,000 all-suite guest rooms, one million square feet of Grand Canal Shoppes, a 1,800-seat theater, a 15,000-seat arena, 1.2 million square feet of meeting facilities, more than 30 restaurants, the world’s largest casino, gondola rides, garden swimming pools and extensive recreational facilities, The Venetian Macao is one grand destination waiting to please.

HÔTEL DE PARISMONACO Nestled in the French Riviera, this glamorous retreat brings beauty and wealth together in its 182 rooms, 74 suites and junior suites and one presidential suite, along with inter-nationally renowned restaurants, some of the fi nest wine cellars in the world—a prestigious home to almost 600,000 bottles, a dedicated wellness center and one of Europe’s most beautiful spas.

MGM RESORTS LAS VEGAS, NVThese 14 Las Vegas hubs sit at the epicenter of luxury and entertainment in the sin city. Unsurpassed shows, uncountable rooms to choose from, the best casinos in the city, award-winning restaurants, uncountable shops and night clubs that outdo the best in the world—these resorts offer the cream of the crop when it comes to luxury stays.

WHEN IT COMES TO UNINHIBITED LUXURY, SOME MIGHT ARGUE THAT SO MUCH CONSPICUOUS CONSUMPTION IS JUST WRONG. BUT, IF A GLAMOROUS GETAWAY IS WRONG, WHO WANTS TO BE RIGHT?

THE BEST OF

WHETHER PAYING for a chance to work on a sheep farm in New Zealand or wine tasting at a vineyard in Napa Valley, agri-tourism tunes into the request for down-to-earth vacations in rural settings. And with the ever-popular trends of organic eating and the Slow Food movement, the upper class can’t help but seek out destina-tions that ful ll their nostalgic yearnings for farm life while supporting their jet-set habits.

The most popular form of agritourism hits on the educational and experiential as-pect of travel—a clear trend among luxury travelers—that emerged in Virtuoso’s lat-est Luxury Travel study, released this year. Appealing to eco-conscious foodies and wine connoisseurs hoping to witness rst-hand how grapes are aged or what it actual-ly takes to raise a grass-fed let, agritourism initiates vacationers into these traditions, helping them to learn about the source of their foods and wines.

Back to their roots—literally—travelers can participate in unique, rural experienc-es, such as organic cooking and butchery classes, herding sheep, cultivating crops,

milking cows, cooking with local ingredi-ents, or simply spending a relaxing vaca-tion tasting wines and enjoying the scen-ery of the land itself.

Agritourism can also encompass the recreational aspect of outdoor life through land-dependent events and activities, such as horseback riding, kayaking or hiking. Many agri-destinations are expanding their offerings to include more variety, hoping to keep guests entertained for longer stays.

Luxury accommodations range from family estates and privately owned vine-yards to working farms or ranches in re-gions spanning countrysides across the world. These destinations strive to bring in revenue to the lands they inhabit with tour-ists seeking the simple elegance of comfort-able and cozy stays.

This type of travel is highly accessible within the U.S. in destinations such as Cal-ifornia, Alabama and Oregon. International locations across Europe, South America and beyond offer similar land conscious vacations, reaching even further into the roots of travelers’ histories and local gas-tronomic trends.

It’s the smallest of details that make the biggest impression on those looking for an intimate retreat.

On the sophisticated north coast, where the St. Ann Mountains sweep down to two private cove beaches, this all-suite, oceanfront enclave, tucked into a majestic coral bluff, is the only all-inclusive resort to have gained member-ship into the prestigious

Leading Hotels of The World and honored as a Leading Spa Hotel. As a ve-decade historical gem, Sandals Royal Plantation built a reputation as a favorite hideaway for the international elite who sought after its authentic vibe.

Today, virtually un-changed in tone, this resort, boasting just 74 exquisite suites, rises twenty- ve feet above the beach, offering uninterrupted sea views for all. Each luxury suite show-cases hand-carved mahogany furnishings, in-room bars, luxury linens, lavish baths and modern details, such as at screen TVs and iPod docking stations.

While just about every water sport imaginable is offered off of Jamaica’s beautiful beaches, golf here is the most revered pastime,

and greens fees are included at the nearby Sandals Golf & Country Club.

The culinary experience is truly exceptional at the resort’s four restaurants, including the award-winning French bistro, Le Papillon. All are under the guidance of internationally renowned chef Allan Limmer, and each offers expert sommeliers to help pair ideal wine cellar selections, including exclu-sive varietals of Beringer ® Wine. The resort also boasts Jamaica’s only champagne and caviar bar—C-Bar.

Sandals Royal Plantation is for travel agents’ discerning clients who appreciate the highest caliber of luxury in an authentic Jamaican experience. To book, visit www.sandals.com.
