behaviours in about 60 scenarios, including for

based on five priority levels.

the Internet and retrieves information by itself

A key feature of the “Internet of Things” is that each

device has its own ID. Thanks to tagging of devices,

the parameters may be recorded and adjusted at

it knows which bulbs fit and what dimming curve it

has (especially important for LEDs).

They look like screw terminals, but are micro-

computers. They are switches, dimmers, motor

controllers, computers, data storage media and

network adapters in one. Every electrical device

gets one of the function-specifi c terminal blocks,

which differ on the outside in their colours and on

the inside in the hardware and software.

The basic philosophy of digitalSTROM: The power

grid becomes a bidirectional data and control line

for all connected electrical appliances. The data is

transferred quickly between smart terminal blocks

in the buttons, lights and equipment and the

digitalSTROM Server. The server is the link

to the Internet; it is mounted on the DIN rail in

the fuse box. It is a Linux-based, energy-effi cient

computer on which server apps run and central

settings are saved – and which is connected to

the Internet via the local router.

The communication with the terminal blocks

occurs via digitalSTROM Meters, one for each

power circuit. This provides stability, as there is

no impact on the overall system when a fuse

blows.

It also facilitates the creation of scenes and auto-

mation, which are mostly room-based.

We have been able to simplify the system to the

extent that only fi ve terminal block types cover

the complete range of applications, from lights to

access control.

This is also supplemented by a freely confi gurable

push button element as well as a line dimmer for

table lamps – the smallest smart controller in the

world, by the way.

Each terminal block stores its own settings,

retrieves preconfi gured behaviour and logs the

device on when plugged in to the system – without

the hassle of pairing.
