What is our vacancy? WearelookingforaTeamRectortoleadtheBeneficeofLangeleiandtohaveprincipalministerialresponsibilityforAllSaints,KingsLangley.TheBeneficecomprisesfourparishes,eachwithonechurch,intheDeaneryofHemelHempsteadwithintheDioceseofSt.Albans:

Where is the Benefice? YoumaybewonderingwhereLangeleiis!TheBeneficesitsinatrianglebetweenHemelHempstead,WatfordandStAlbansapproximately20milesnorthwestofLondononthesouthernedgeoftheChilternHills,withbeautifulancientwoodlandsandcountrysideonthedoorstep.WhentheBeneficewascreatedin2009themedievalwordLangelei(longmeadow)waschosentodescribethevalleyflowingsouthwestfromHemeltoincludeKingsLangleywhichhadatthatpointrecentlyjoinedtheteam.TheareahasexcellenttransportlinkstoboththeM25andM1andispartoftheLondoncommuterbelt.Thereisawidechoiceofgoodschoolsandcollegesinthelocalareaandthemodern,4-bedroomRectoryisintheheartofKingsLangleyvillage,withineasywalkingdistanceofthechurchandlocalshops.

Who are we? WeareaBeneficeoffourparisheseachledbyaPCC,withanoverarchingTeamCouncilwhichhasresponsibilitiesforcommunicationsandofficeadministration.TheTeamCouncilmeetsatleasttwiceayearandcomprisesthethreestipendiaryclergyandtwolayrepresentativesfromeachparish.Eachparishhasresponsibilityforitsownmission,ministryandfinances,andwevaluethefreedomtorespondtoourownlocalcontexts,andcelebratethediversityofeachchurch'sowntraditionsandvision.However,wearealsocommittedtooneanother,enjoyingaffectionaterelationshipsbetweenthe4congregations.Wedosomethingsbesttogether,andsomebestseparately,andtrytomaintainalighttouchonthat.CurrentlyweworshiptogetheronAshWednesdayandontheanniversaryofourformationasateaminOctober;wehaveanannualjointQuietDay;walktheEasterMondaypilgrimagetoStAlbanstogether;jointlypreparechildrenforCommunionbeforeConfirmation;andorganiseoccasionalteamsocials.ThestaffingleveloftheBeneficeis3fulltimestipendiaryclergy(eachparishwarrants75%ofapriest'stime),withadditionalsupportfromonelicensedLayReader,threeretiredReadersaswellastwoclergywithPermissiontoOfficiate.SinceJanuary2017StMary'sandStBenedict'shaveformedanewpairing,sharingtheRevdRichardHowlett'stimeona50/50basis.TheRevdLizzieHoodisbasedatHolyTrinitybutoffers25%ofherparishtimeinsupportofStBenedict's.ThenewTeamRectorwouldbebasedatAllSaintsandwouldsimilarlyoffer25%oftheirparishtimeinsupportofStMary's.ThetwoTeamVicarsareexperiencedpriestsandLizzieisalsotheRuralDeanofHemelHempstead.Theymeetweeklyforprayer,mutualsupportandteambusiness.Theministryteamverymuchvaluestrulycollegialrelationships,listeningtoandencouragingoneanotherandpoolingtheirdifferentskillsandtalentsforthebenefitofthewholeteam.TheBeneficehasbeenatraininggroundforcuratesandwehopethiswillcontinueinthefuture.TheTeamRectoradditionallyconvenestheTeamCouncil,chairstheLeverstockGreenReligiousEducationFundtrustees'meetings,andactsinarepresentativecapacityonbehalfoftheBenefice.TheBeneficeissupportedbyanexperiencedpart-timeAdministrator,working22.5hoursperweek,whoisbasedatAllSaints.

All Saints’ Church, Kings Langley AllSaints’ChurchistheparishchurchofKingsLangleyandhasasignificantpresenceinastrong,activeandsupportivecommunityinthevillage.Therearecurrently116onourelectoralroll,withusualSundayattendanceofaround51adultsonSundays.Thereareveryfewchildrenandyoungpeople–anaverageof5childrenand1teenagerintheregularSundayservice.Allthesenumbershavedeclinedinrecentyears,andreachingouttochildrenandyoungfamiliesissomethingweknowwemustdotobalanceanotherwiseageingcongregation.Asatraditionalvillagechurch,wedohavetheopportunitytoconnectwithlocalfamilies-manyofwhomrequestbaptisms,weddingsandfunerals.Christmas,EasterandRemembranceservicesallhavegoodattendanceincludingmanynon-regularchurchgoers.Werecentlycelebratedour800thanniversarywithahostofevents.ThechurchbuildingisoneofHertfordshire’smostbeautifulancientchurchesandisaGradeII*listedbuilding,foundedin1215.Duringthelastyearwehaveopenedthechurchonadailybasisandhavehadasignificantnumberofvisitors,bothfromthelocalcommunityandmuchfurtherafield,manyattractedtoviewtheroyaltombofEdmundofLangley,thefirstDukeofYork.WearefortunatetobesupportedbyanactiveFriendsofAllSaintsgroupwhoraisefundstomaintainthefabricofthebuilding.It’snotjustthebuildingthatisopen!Wefeelwehavemadesignificantprogressinopeningourselvestowelcomethecommunitywithvariedconcertsandevents,andthereisanewspiritofenergyandenthusiasminthePCCwhoareopentothechangethatweneedtoembrace.ThePCCconsistsof2churchwardens,7electedmembers,3Deaneryrepresentativesand3co-optedmembers.Thereareseveralsub-groupsmanagingfabric,finance,andfund-raisingandwehaveaprofessionalaccountantasourHonoraryTreasurer.WehaveaLocalMinistryDevelopmentTeam,providingahighlyvaluedpastoralservicetomanyparishioners,lookingforwardtoworkingwithanewincumbenttofurtherourministryinChrist.

Where are we going?

WeknowthatGodhasforusaTeamRectorwhohasagiftforwelcome,opennessandinclusiveness,asthesearecorevaluesembeddedinourMissionActionPlan,updatedlastinJune2017:

WepraythatGodispreparingtherightpersontoleadusinre-energisingandre-motivatingthechurchtobeaplacewherepeopleofallagesareabletofindChristandforalltogrowinfaith.TherearetalentedpeopleinthecongregationandwehaveastrongdesiretoworkwithanewTeamRectortogrowourchurchfamily.WehaveconfidencethatAllSaintswillflourishagainunderGod’sdirectionasavibrantfamilychurch,welllinkedintothecommunityandwiderBenefice.Weareintheearlyplanningstagesofanexcitingprojecttore-ordertheinternallayoutofthechurch,openingupthespaciousinteriorandmakingitwelcomingandaccessibletoall,bringingafeelingofinclusivityandprovidingaflexiblelayoutfordifferentformsofworshipandcommunityevents.Itisnotwhollysupported,butwebelieveGodwillguideusalltowardsmakingtherightchoicesandwehopeandexpectthatthenewTeamRectorwillleadandsupportus.

St Mary’s Church, Apsley StMary’sisanactivechurch,seekingtoservethecommunityvialinkswithschoolsandsupportforvoluntaryorganisationssuchasDENSandDruglink(NascentHouserehabilitationprojectisnexttothechurch),andwehavemadesignificantprogress.Therearecurrently93ontheelectoralroll,andtheusualSundayattendanceis51adultsand10children.Inthelastyearwehavehad18baptismsandthanksgivingservices,6weddingsand9funerals.StMary’sisanattractiveVictorian-builtchurch,overlookingtheApsleyMillsretailpark.Itsbuildingandgroundsarewellmaintained,thankstoarenownedvolunteerworkforce.ItisGradeIIlistedandisdiligentlycaredforbyitsFabricCommittee.Heatingandlightinghavebeenupgradedandthereisanongoingprogrammeofstoneworkmaintenance.IthasanactivewellledbellringingteamwhoringeverySundayandatotherspecialservicesthroughouttheyear.Thewestendofthechurchcontainsthekitchen,toilets,andtherefectorywhichisusedforavarietyofactivitiesincludingSundaySchool,Saturdaycafé,BuzzyBees,meetingsandstudygroups.

CommunityThechurchmembershaveforseveralyearstakenpartincarolsinginginlocalpubs,nursinghomesandoutsideSainsbury’s,raisingmoneyforlocalcharities.TheChristmasBazaarandAngelFestivalhavealsoputthechurchincontactwithhundredsoflocalpeople-bothlong-termresidentsandthosewhohavearrivedmorerecently.OurthreelocalprimaryschoolsenjoycomingtothechurchforspecialservicesandNationalCurriculumstudyvisits,andwearebuildingonexistingcontactswiththem.TheVicarisanex-officiogovernoratNashMillsVASchoolandworkscloselywiththeHeadandschoolcommunityindevelopingtheChristianethosoftheschool.SeverallaymembersofStMary’sarestaffattheschool.Thelocaluniformedorganisationscometospecialeveningvisitsatthechurch,aswellasattendingservicessuchasMotheringSundayandHarvest.

St. Benedict's Church, Bennetts End Thechurchstandsatabusyjunction,oppositethemainBennettsGateshops.StBenedict’spridesitselfongivingawarmwelcometoall,andwewishtowelcomeinmoreofthecommunity.Thatiswhyopeningourchurchisoneofthegoals,andwewillwanttodeveloptheinteriortoprovideresourcesandwelcometopeopletojust‘dropin’.InFebruary2018,thechurchcelebrated60yearssinceitsconsecration. StBenedict’sisinanareaofgreatersocio-economicdeprivation,andsadlywedonotcurrentlyhavethebenefitoflegacyresources.Thebudgetfortheendofthisyearprojectsadeficitofover£8500.StBenedict’shasbeenapprovedforcontinuedsupportasamission-aidedparish.Thoughwecontinuetostrugglefinancially,wearecapableofachievinggreatthingstogether,suchasraising£25,000in2014toinstalladisabledtoiletandimprovefacilitiesforourlessmobilechurchmembersandvisitors.WehavehostedanumberofjoyfulandcelebratoryChristmasTreeFestivalevents,supportedbycommunitygroupsandlocalbusinesses,andrecentlyhadaverysuccessfulAutumnFair,raisingjustunder£1300andattractingalargenumberofnon-churchmemberstotheevent.Asuccessful‘EasterTrail’wasattendedbyyear1and2childrenfromlocalschools,andanotherisplannedthisyear.StBenedict’siscertainlyata‘lowebb’intermsofnumbersofregularworshippers,andtheministryteamofVicar,RuralDeanandPTOClergyandPTOReaderhavesoughttogivealotofloveandbuildagoodfamilyatmosphere.Thechurch’ssenseofidentityandcommonpurposehasbeenenhancedbythereviewoftheirMAP.TheupdatedMAPgoalsarebelow.Therearecurrently39ontheelectoralroll,andtheaverageSundayattendanceis22adultsand4children.Inthelastyearwehavehad3baptismsandthanksgivingservices,8funeralsandnoweddings.

StBenedict’sisamodernbuildingofthelate1950s,basedonthemodelofCoventrycathedral.Itisingoodgeneralrepair,thoughthehallkitchenneedsrefurbishment.Ournewdisabled-accessWC,installedaftersuccessfulfundraisingbythecongregationtoenablechurch-levelaccesshasthankfullyputanendtothe‘walkofshame’!

CommunityThereiscertainlyscopeforStBenedict’stobe‘seen’muchmoreasaspecialandsacredplaceinthiscommunity.Thisincludessuccessfulworkwithschoolswithwhomwecontinuetohavegoodlinks.Thereisalsoamandatetopursuesharingandco-operationbetweenStBenedict’sandStMary’s,whosharetheteamvicarRevdRichardHowlett. NashMillsCofEVASchoolliesontheborderofbothparishesandisasharedmissionopportunity.

Holy Trinity Church, Leverstock Green HolyTrinityisanactivechurchattheheartofthecommunity,bothphysically(beinglocatedadjacenttothevillagegreenandclosetoaparadeofshops,pubsandalibrary)andthroughitsactivitiesactingasafocusforvillagelife.Thewell-maintainedGradeIIlistedbuildingfrom1849issetinapeacefulchurchyardwhich,thoughclosedtoburials,hasaGardenofRemembrancefortheintermentofashes.The'TrinityRoom'extensionattherearofthechurchhasmeetingandotherrooms,butisinadequatefortoday’sneeds.Therearecurrently165ontheelectoralroll,andtheusualSundayattendanceis90adultsand8children.Inthelastyearwehavehad23baptismsandthanksgivingservices,7weddings,27funeralsand17intermentsofashes.Our'worshippingcommunity'roselastyearfrom183to226,andwefeelthisisduetoarangeofapproaches-acultureofrepeatinvitation;warmthofwelcome;imaginativeandfuncommunityevents;betterfocussedpublicitywhichmakesgooduseofsocialmedia;improvingthequalityofourworship;andthevarietyofnurtureopportunitiesforallages,includingquietdays,retreatsandpilgrimage.VenturessuchasNativityCribFestivals,petservices,andconcertshavedrawninmanyresidentswhoarenotregularworshippers,butwhoarebeginningtofilterin,andweareseekingtobuildonthis.Wehavealsostrengthenedlinkswithlocalorganisations,establishingFriendshipTeasjointlywiththeWI,organisingjointeventswiththeCricketClub,andhostingaCOGSmemoryclubforAgeUKDacorum.Whilewehaveevidencethatweareachievingsomeofourgoals,thereisstillworktobedoneinstrengtheningthe'pathway'forbaptismfamiliestoprogressintomaturediscipleship.ThePCChasidentifiedthatweare'potbound'byinadequatehall/meetingroomspace,andwearecommittedtoinvestigatingarebuildoftheTrinityRoom.Therearemanyactivegroupsintheparishincluding'ComingtoStillness'(acontemplativeprayergroup),MusicandMeditation,homestudygroups,acarers'supportgroupandapastoralsupportgroup.Therearealsovarioussocialgroups-TrinityWomen,TrinityMen,andgroupsforthosekeenoncraftandreading,aswellasaSaturdayCoffeeShopandTraidcraftStall.

CommunityLeverstockGreenisanhistoricandprettyvillageontheeasternedgeofHemelHempstead,ontheroadtoStAlbans,nowconnectedtothe'NewTown'.Theclose-knitcommunityhasastrongvillageidentitywithacommunitycentre,avarietyofsportsclubsandotheramenities.ThevillageisapopularplacetolivewithexcellenttransportlinksandisservedbysecondaryschoolsinHemelHempstead,WatfordandStAlbans.ThereisoneAbbeyfieldhomeinthevillage.ThereisaChurchofEnglandVoluntaryControlledPrimarySchool,withwhichthechurchhasacloserelationship-leadingweeklyworship,providingFoundationGovernorsandhostingclassvisits.ThereisalsoaSpecialNeedsschoolwithinthevillagewhichcomestochurchforseasonalworship.

The Deanery of Hemel Hempstead HemelHempsteadisasmall,cohesiveDeaneryfocussedonthetownitselfandtheneighbouringvillageofKingsLangley,withamixoftraditionalandestatechurches.Itismadeupof:

• TheBeneficeofLangeleicomprisingfourchurchesoverfourparishes.• TheParishofBoxmoor,comprisingthreechurchesinoneparish.• TheBeneficeofHemelHempsteadcomprisingfivechurchesoverfourparishes.

TheDeaneryChapterisalivelygroupmadeupofClergyandLayReaders(activeandretired)whomeetonamonthlybasisforbusiness,support,learningandfun.Wegiveourmeetingsahighprioritywhichhasledtoastrongsenseofbelongingandtrust;aplacenotofcompetitionbutwherewecanshareourvulnerabilityandthejoysandchallengesofministry,andsoguardagainstisolationandstress.Forseveralyearswehaveheldeitherashortannualresidentialorindividualstudydays.ThereistheexpectationofcommitmenttotheChapteranditsideals,andthelifeandworkoftheDeaneryasawhole.ThethreeTeamRectorsalsomeetwiththeRuralDeanoccasionally,andtheyrepresenttheirteamsonDeaneryStandingandPastoralCommittee.TheDeanerySynodmeetsthreetimesayear,andhasrecentlysetupaninnovativeprojecttodevelopaLayChaptertoenablethelaymembersofSynodtobuildstrongerrelationshipsandbebetterequippedfortheirrole.Thelayrepresentativesalsoliaisewiththemembersofourchurchestosharegoodpractice,toarrangejointtraininglocallyandtoencouragefellowshipbetweenthechurches.TheDeaneryasawholehasagrowingsenseofconnectedness.WenowworshiptogetheronAscensionDayandorganiseanannualsocialorouting.OurDeaneryMissionActionPlanseekstomaketheDeaneryacatalystforgrowingGod’schurchinthisarea,exploringhowwecanbestshareexperienceandenthusiasmtoresourceourpeopleandworktogether.Weaimtobeauthenticallyrelatedandameansofsupporttoparishes.Wearealsoworkingtogethertokeepawatchfuleyeontheproposednewhousingdevelopmentsandtheirimplicationsforspiritualcare.

Churches Together in Hemel Hempstead ChurchesTogetherinHemelHempsteadwasestablishedin1995withthegoalofprovidingacommonvoicewhenengagingwiththewidercommunity,tofacilitatecommunicationbetweenmemberchurches,andtoencouragepartnershipworking.CTHHorganisesajointWalkofWitnessinHemeltowncentreonGoodFriday.Inrecentyears,churcheshaveworkedtogetheronseveralexcitingprojectstoservelocalneeds.Thesehaveincludedanightshelter(nowDENS-theDacorumEmergencyNightShelter),aFoodbank,asecondaryschools'ministryproject(Crossover),PrayHemel(amonthlyecumenicalprayerbreakfast),andAcrossHemelatown-widemission.MostrecentlyLibertyTeaRoomshasopenedinacentralpositionasaCommunityHub,offeringsomuchmorethanteaandcake(onapay-as-you-canbasis);it'snowthebaseforChristiansAgainstPoverty,theteamofStreetPastors,andthePolicechaplains.Ministersmeetoccasionallyforlunch,andthishasledtoagreatersenseofcohesionacrossthetownchurches.MembersofChurchesTogetherinHemelHempsteadalsoparticipateintheDacorumInterfaithNetworkwhichholdsregulardiscussionsandevents.KingsLangleyalsohasitsownChurchesTogethernetwork,andtheministersmeetfromtimetotimeforlunch.ThereisaveryactiveChristianAidnetworkinKingsLangley,raisingmuchneededfundsandawarenessacrossthelocalarea.

The Diocese of St Albans TheDioceseofStAlbanscoversBedfordshire,Luton,HertfordshireandBarnet.OurBeneficesitsinthesouthwestoftheDiocese,convenientlyclosetotheCathedralandtheDiocesanHQinStAlbans,andwithintheArchdeaconryofStAlbans,withtheVenerableJonathanSmithasourArchdeacon.OurDiocesanBishop,theRtRevdDrAlanSmith,isassistedbytwoSuffragans-theRtRevdDrMichaelBeasley(Hertford)andtheRtRevdRichardAtkinson(Bedford).OurBishopsencourageusto'LiveGod'sLove'by'GoingdeeperintoGod','Makingnewdisciples',and'Transformingcommunities'andthisvisionundergirdsthemissionofourparishesandchaplaincies.DiocesanOfficersprovideinvaluablesupportinvariousareasofparishlife,andthereisanactiveMissionandMinistryDepartment.WeareencouragedtomakeuseofagoodSupportinMinistry(SiM)scheme,totakeuptheopportunityofExtendedStudyLeave,andtoreflectregularlyonpracticebyengagingintheprocessofMissionandMinistryDevelopmentReviewswhichinvolveinterviewswithconsultantsandvisitsfromtheBishop'sStaffTeam.

Local area Kings Langley KingsLangleyvillagehasapopulationofapproximately6,100andissurroundedbygreenbeltcountryside.ThevillagehasexcellentlinkstoLondonandtherestoftheUKwithregulartrainsintoEustonandanationalmotorwaynetworkwiththeM1andjunction20oftheM25withineasyreach. Thevillageboastsmanyhistoricbuildingsapartfromthechurch-someoftheshopsandpubsinthevillagedatebackmanycenturies.KingHenryIIIhadaRoyalSeathereandbuiltahuntingLodgeintheRoyalForest,whichstretchedfromouterLondonallaroundLangeleianduptoBerkhamsted.KingEdwardIlivedintheRoyalPalaceatthetopofLangleyHillandcelebratedAllSaints’DayintheParishChurchin1299.ThenameLangeleibecameLangleyRegisinthe1383andthenKingsLangleyinthe1600s.Today,thevillageshops,restaurantsandpubsattractpeoplefromthelocalareabothduringthedayandintheevening.KingsLangleyvillagehasapopularprimaryschoolandwithinitsgroundsistheThreeVillagesChildrenCentreofferingsupporttochildrenunderfiveandtheirfamilies.Anewlyrebuiltcomprehensiveco-educationalsecondaryschoolreopenedin2016.BothschoolsareoversubscribedandhaverecentlyreceivedverygoodOfstedreports.ThevillagecatersfornurseryagechildrenbothprivatelyattheMontessorischoolandthe“JackintheBox”nurserywhichacceptsbothfeepayingandgovernmentfundedplaces.NearbyisAbbotsHillindependentgirls’schoolandaRudolfSteinerschool.Thevillagehasuniformedorganisationsforchildrenofallages–RainbowsthroughtoGuidesandBeaverstoScouts.Therearelinkswiththesegroups,butitwouldbegoodtostrengthenthem.Thereisacricketclubonthecommon,afootballclub(whereWatfordLadiesFCalsotrainandplay),abowlsclub,tennisclub,severalactiveamateurdramaticsgroupsandavarietyofotherclubsandsocieties.Watfordtothesoutheastisathrivingtowncentrewhichiscurrentlyundergoingmajorredevelopment.

Hemel Hempstead HemelHempsteadisanancienttownwithalonghistorystretchingbacktoDomesdaytimes.HenryVIIIgrantedHemelHempsteadaRoyalChartertoallowaThursdaymarketinwhatisnowtheOldTown.Themarketisnolongerheldthere,buttheOldTownhasremainedaveryattractivearea,withantiqueshops,restaurants,coffeeshops,pubsandalovelypark.Thereisalsoasmalltheatrethathostsmusiceventsandsmalltouringcompanies.

HemelHempsteadwasexpandedintoaNewTowninthe50sand60s,anditnowhasapopulationofaround90,000.Itwasdesignedasaseriesofneighbourhoods,eachwithitsownamenitiesandgreenspaces.ThetowncentrehasrecentlyundergoneamajorrefurbishmentwithanewlibraryandcivicofficesforDacorumBoroughCouncil,updatedstreetfurnitureintheshoppingcentre,andtheoriginalJellicoewatergardenshavebeenrestored.TheMaylandsindustrialareaisalsoundergoingsignificantdevelopment.

HemelHempsteadhasacentralLeisureCentreandswimmingpoolandatJarmanParkthereisamulti-screencinema,an‘extreme’sportscentre,anathleticstrackandanumberofpopularrestaurants,aswellasanexcellentSnowCentrenearby.Thetownissurroundedbyparks,commonlandandcountryside,includingtheBoxmoorTrustlandand,about5milesaway,the4,000acreAshridgeEstate,whichisNationalTrustpropertyandthroughwhichpassestheRidgewayandmanyotherwaymarkedwalks.

HemelHempsteadhasafrequenttrainservicetoLondon,takingabout30minutes,androadconnectionswiththeM1totheEastandtheM25totheSouth.Itiseasytoaccessnearbytowns,suchasWatford,Tring,AylesburyandStAlbanswhichhavetheatresandcommunityevents.HemeliswellknownforitsMagicRoundabout,wheretrafficcirculatesinbothdirections!
