The Beer List starts here… in alphabetical order of Brewery 1648 East Hoathly, East Sussex Lammas Ale (4.2% SPECIALITY) Celebrate the new harvest; Amber, clear clean and smooth the addition of malted wheat. Spiced Frog (5.2% SPECIALITY) Normally only available as a bottled-beer; dark gold and full bodied in the French/Bel- gian style, lightly hopped full malty flavour which a touch of spice. Three Threads (4.3% SPECIALITY) Award-winning dark beer combines three different styles of beer in single ale. 360 DEGREE Sheffield Park, East Sussex Pacific Pale #49 (4.9% SPECIALITY) Full of hops from the USA and Australia; this is chestnut-coloured, modern pale ale with fruit and floral flavours and crisp bitterness. West Coast IPA #56 (5.6% GOLDEN ALE) Light coloured, hoppy and moderately bitter for an American Pale ale style beer. Well balanced and easy drinking despite its strength. ADNAMS Southwold, Suffolk Southwold Bitter (3.7% BITTER) Aromas of toffee apple, caramel and sulphur. Taste is a complex mix of malt toffee and roast bitterness with hops. Malty bitter and apple flavours linger into the aftertaste. 4 BANKS’S – (part of Marston’s PLC), Wolverhampton, West Midlands Bitter (3.8% BITTER) A pale brown bitter with a pleasant balance of hops and malt; hops continue from the taste through to a bittersweet aftertaste. 4 Mild (3.5% MILD) Amber-coloured, well-balanced, refreshing session beer. 4 BASELINE Small Dole, West Sussex Englander Weissbier (4.0% SPECIALITY) German by name but English by nature. This beer doesn’t comply with Berliner Weisse wheat content, nor does it taste like your typical Wheat Beer. This beer is an original English take on a German style, it is more heavily hopped and with more citrus than a traditional Wheat Beer. BATEMANS Wainfleet, Lincolnshire Black & White (3.6% MILD) Gentle roast fruity airs preface this red-brown, caramel-infused brew. Malt and a stewed plummy sweetness initially give depth. Caramel dominates the short simple finish. (40) XB (3.7% BITTER) A well-rounded, smooth malty beer with a blackcurrant fruity background. Hops flourish initially before giving way to a bittersweet dryness that en- hances the mellow malty ending. 4 BEDLAM Albourne, West Sussex Light Pale Ale (3.6% BITTER) A brand new ale; sorry no tasting notes yet. Porter (5% PORTER) This is a traditional dark, hoppy porter. BLACKJACK Manchester Black Sparrow (ABV 6.1% IPA) Malty, hoppy aroma with notes of coffee, dark choco- late and pine needles which are also present in the taste. BOGGART HOLE CLOUGH Manchester Ginger (ABV 4.4% SPECIALITY) Very pale ginger beer complimented with floral hops and a hint of coriander. BRAINS Cardiff Bitter (3.7% BITTER) Amber coloured with a gentle aroma of malt and hops. Malt, hops and bitterness combine in an easy-drinking beer with a bitter finish. 4 Dark (3.5% MILD) A tasty, classic dark brown mild, a mix of malt, roast, caramel with a background of hops. Bittersweet, mellow and with a lasting finish of malt and roast.4 SA (4.2% BITTER) A mellow, full-bodied beer. Gentle malt and hop aroma leads to a malty, hop and fruit mix with a balancing bitterness. 4 BRIGHTON BIER CO. Brighton & Hove Underdog (4.2% BITTER) 100% English hops set against a complex malt bill of 6 different grains including Rye and Munich malt. A crisp hop bitterness and a rich satisfying malt flavour. West Pier Pale Ale (4%) A classic, hop-forward, flavour-packed pale ale. Simcoe, Centennial and Cascade hops are set against a satisfying malt base. BURNING SKY Firle, East Sussex Arise (4.4% IPA) A rare chance to sample a cask, as most of the brew will be kegged; straw gold in colour, a balanced malt bill gives a great mouth feel and a finish that keeps on giving. Restrained bitterness followed by massive peach, pine & resinous hop flavours to keep you satisfied. A session IPA that’s perfect for the end of the day (or the start). Devils Rest (7% STRONG ALE) A full strength IPA; named after a nook on the South Downs near the brewery. It has a burnt orange colour and full flavour, due to the huge amounts of Simcoe & Centennial hops used during the brewing process, with even more added post fermentation. BUXTON Buxton, Derbyshire Blonde (4.6% GOLDEN ALE) A classic blonde – clear and crisp; Blonde is mashed with a blend of lager malt and wheat for a zesty, fruity character. It is hopped with only continental European varieties. CROUCH VALE South Woodham Ferrers, Essex Yakima Gold (4.2% GOLDEN ALE) Very pale with delicious Amarillo hops, therefore earthily aromatic and highly drinkable. Yakima Valley is the area of Washington State in which the hops are grown. DANCING DUCK Derby, Derbyshire Amberillo (4.8% BITTER) Easy drinking amber ale; earthy aromatic American hops are balanced with biscuit malt flavours leading to a spicy, peppery finish. DARK STAR Partridge Green, West Sussex Hophead (3.8% GOLDEN ALE) Golden-coloured with a fruity/hoppy aroma and a citrus/bitter taste and aftertaste. Flavours remain strong to the end. Original (5% OLD ALE) Former Champion Beer of Britain; a dark strong and bitter beer that defies classification – you decide. Victorian Ruby Mild (6% SPECIALITY) Mashed with mild ale malt along with a careful blend of other speciality malts; a mix of European & US hops that are then added in the copper, give the gentle bitterness and provide a take on a less well-known Mild tradition for strength and soft complex flavours. DOWNLANDS Small Dole, West Sussex Anglo Pale Ale (4.7% GOLDEN ALE) Anglo Pale Ale made entirely with UK-grown ingredients. Who'd have thought it possible? ELGOOD’S Wisbech, Cambridgeshire Cambridge Bitter (3.8% BITTER) This has fruit and malt on the nose with increasing hops and balancing malt on the palate with a dry finish. 4 EVERARDS Narborough, Leicestershire Beacon Bitter (3.8% BITTER) A light, refreshing, well-balanced pale amber bitter in the Burton style. 4 Tiger Best Bitter (4.2% BITTER) Mid-brown, well-balanced best bitter crafted for broad appeal, benefiting from a long, bittersweet finish. (40) FRANKLINS Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex 1066 (3.9% GOLDEN ALE) A golden ale brewed to a traditional country recipe and dry hopped with Citra & Cascade to give it a crisp hop bitterness. Regaler (4.7% SPECIALITY) This lager-ale hybrid; is a cold-fermented lager-style ale, amber in colour using entirely German malt and hops. FULLER’S Chiswick, London W4 Chiswick Bitter (3.5% BITTER) Refreshing pale brown bitter with some citrus notes on the palate fading in the aftertaste, which is hoppy and slightly dry. Aroma is of hops with a trace of biscuit. 4 ESB (5.5% BITTER) Bitter orange marmalade with hops, creamy toffee and some raisins are all present in this multifaceted strong brown bitter. A satisfying long, bitter, dry finish balanced by a malty sweetness. 4 GOLDSTONE Ditchling, East Sussex Amarillo (4.5% GOLDEN ALE) American hop variety of 'Amarillo' provides strong aromas of grapefruit and gooseberry with a dry bitter finish. Ruddy Duck (4.1% OLD ALE) Medium bodied, very dark ale with notes of caramel, chocolate and coffee; there is a dry finish readily suited to drinking in quantity. HARVEY Lewes, East Sussex IPA (3.5% BITTER) With a delicate grassy and earthy hop aroma, the refreshing bitter- ness of this beer is balanced by the subtle malt flavours which make for an extremely drinkable pint that has a dry finish and lasting after taste. 4 St. Richard’s Ale (ABV 5% SPECIALITY) Brewed with six different varieties of hops from six different Sussex growers. Named in honour of the Patron Saint of Sussex, whose Feast Day (16th June) is Sussex Day. Sussex XX Mild (3.0% MILD) A dark copper-brown colour ale; roast malt dominates the aroma and palate leading to a sweet, caramel finish. 4 HOLDEN’S Woodsetton, West Midlands Black Country Mild (3.7% MILD) This good, red/brown mild is refreshing with a light blend of roast malt, hops and fruit, dominated by malt throughout. ( 4 HOLT Cheetham, Manchester Bitter (4.0% BITTER) Copper-coloured beer with malt and hops in the aroma. Malt, hops and fruit in the taste with a bitter and hoppy finish. (40) Mild (3.2% MILD) A dark brown/red beer with a fruity, malty nose. Roast, malt, fruit and hops in the taste, with strong bitterness for a mild, and a dry malt and hops finish. 4 HOOK NORTON Hook Norton, Oxfordshire Hooky (3.5% BITTER) A classic golden session bitter; hoppy and fruity aroma fol- lowed by a malt and hops taste and a continuing hoppy finish. 4 Hooky Mild (2.8% MILD) - A chestnut brown, easy-drinking mild. A complex malt and hop aroma give way to a well-balanced taste, leading to a long, hoppy finish. 4 HURST Hurstpierpoint, West Sussex Founders Best Bitter (4.2% BITTER) Named after the Founder of the original Hurst Brewery, George Saltmarsh. Nutty brown in colour, has a rounded malty taste and is suffused with subtle caramel. Keeper’s Gold (4.4% GOLDEN ALE) Smooth, amber gold ale with a floral aroma; its unmistakable citrusy notes are finely balanced with a subtle infusion of South Downs honey and a refreshing hoppy finish. It is brewed to celebrate the long history of bee keeping along the base of the South Downs. JENNINGS – (part of Marston’s PLC), Cockermouth, Cumbria Bitter (3.5% BITTER) Malty with a good mouthfeel that combines with roast flavour and a hoppy finish (40) Dark Mild (3.1% MILD) A well-balanced, dark brown mild with a malty aroma, strong roast taste, not over-sweet, with some hops and a slightly bitter finish. 4 KISSINGATE Lower Beeding, West Sussex Rosa Black (4.8% STOUT) A decadent stout infused with rosewater and New Zealand hops, unfined. Stout Extreme Jamaica (6% STOUT) A fulsome bitter and slightly less sweet stout; intense liquorice, coffee, molasses and sub- tle rum flavours balanced with fruit bitterness derived from Pacific Jade hops. Each cask is heavily dry hopped to add intensity to the drinking experience. LAINE Brighton & Hove Crazy 8 (5.3% IPA) This Black IPA is brewed with 4 different American hops and then dry-hopped with a 5th, combining with dark malt to give a full earthy, sweet backdrop with a huge hop hit and bitter finish. FORTY YEARS OF OUR BRANCH

WITH this year’s Festival celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Brighton &South Downs Branch of the Campaign for Real Ale, the decision has been

taken to source 40 beers (or their nearest present-day equivalent) that werebeing brewed in 1974. These beers are indicated by 40 at the end of the notes.Also we are using coloured cask-end labels to denote the different beer styles:-BITTER: WHITE MILD: LIGHT BLUEIPA: ORANGEOLD ALE, PORTER, STOUT: LILACGOLDEN ALE: LIGHT YELLOWSPECIALITY: LIGHT GREENSTRONG ALE: PINKThe percentages on the drinks indicate “A.B.V.” which stands for Alcohol by Volume. Thisis a measure that gives the percentage of alcohol in the finished beer, cider or perry; thehigher the figure the stronger the drink.OUR FESTIVAL CHARITY is HEADWAY, based at Hurstwood Park, Haywards Heathwho rebuild lives after brain injury. LEES – Middleton Junction, Manchester✹ Bitter (4% BITTER) Copper-coloured beer with malt and fruit in aroma, taste and finish. 40✹ Brewer’s Dark (3.5% MILD) Formerly GB Mild, this is a dark brown beer with amalt and caramel aroma. It has a creamy mouthfeel, with malt, caramel and fruit flavoursand a malty finish; becoming rare to find. 40

MARSTON’S – Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire✹ Burton Bitter (3.8% BITTER) Overwhelming sulphurous aroma supports a scatteringof hops and fruit with an easy-drinking sweetness. The taste develops from the sweet mid-dle to a satisfyingly hoppy finish. 40

ORKNEY – Quoyloo, Northern Isles✹ Skull Splitter (8.5% STRONG ALE) An intense velvet malt nose with hints of apple,prune and plum. The hoppy taste is balanced by satiny smooth malt with fruity spicyedges, leading to a long, dry finish with a hint of nut.

PIN-UP – Southwick, East Sussex✹ Milk Stout (4.5% STOUT) A luscious Milk Stout, brewed using milk sugars (lactose).✹ Summer Blonde (4.8% GOLDEN ALE) Newly-brewed summer seasonal; expect citrus notes throughout.

RECTORY – Streat, East Sussex (also brewing at Harvey’s micro-plant)✹ O Valiant Hearts (4.7% MILD) A strong Mild, reminiscent of those brewed just be-fore the beginning of the First World War; the brew has reverted to the original recipe toproduce a dark rather than a light coloured ale.✹ Rector’s Revenge (5.0% BITTER) Traditional style mid-brown coloured strong bitterwith good balance of malt and hops and a long bitter finish.

ROBINSON’S – Stockport, Cheshire✹ 1892 (3.3% MILD) 1892 is an excellent easy drinking nut brown Cheshire ale with adry roasted nutty malt palate and a delicate Golding dry hop aroma; finishing with athirst quenching balance of t and hops. 40✹ Unicorn (4.2% BITTER) Amber beer with a fruity aroma. Malt, hops and fruit in thetaste with a bitter, malty finish. 40

ST. AUSTELL – St. Austell, Cornwall✹ Dartmoor Best Bitter (3.5% BITTER) Easy-drinking, copper-coloured session bitter. Smooth and balanced sweet malt, fruit andspicy hop bitterness flavours with some astringency throughout. 40

SHEPHERD NEAME – Faversham, Kent✹ Master Brew Bitter (3.7% BITTER) A distinctive bitter, mid-brown in colour, with ahoppy aroma. Well-balanced, with a nicely aggressive bitter taste from its hops, it leavesa hoppy/bitter finish, tinged with sweetness. 40

STANLEY CRAFT ALES – Portslade, E.Sussex (currently brewing at Downlands)✹ Wolseley Best Bitter (4.1% BITTER) A typical Best Bitter with malt leading the aroma and taste.

TIMOTHY TAYLOR – Keighley, West Yorkshire✹ Golden Best (3.5% MILD) Refreshing, amber-coloured traditional Pennine light mild, malty throughout, fruit in thearoma increases to complement the delicate hoppy taste. 40✹ Landlord (4.3% BITTER) – A more-ish best bitter combining citrus peel aromas, richmalt, spicy hops, an underlying marmalade sweetness and long bitter finish. 40✹ Ram Tam (4.3% OLD ALE) A black beer with red highlights topped by a coffeecoloured head. Roast coffee bitterness is balanced by fruit and malt with burnt caramelcoming through in the dry and bitter finish. 40

THWAITES – Blackburn, Lancashire✹ Nutty Black (3.3% MILD) A sweet, fruity mild with gentle roast bitterness and resid-ual hops; a well-balanced, low strength ale. 40

✹ Original (3.6% BITTER) Hop-driven, yet well-balanced amber session bitter. Hopscontinue through to the long finish. 40

TOP-NOTCH – Haywards Heath, West Sussex✹ Flare Path (5.5% SPECIALITY) An American Amber-ale; toasted caramel and malty sweetness balanced with smoothgrapefruit bitterness, tropical fruitiness and citrus aroma.

TURNERS – Ringmer, East Sussex✹ American Pale Ale (4.7% GOLDEN ALE) Aromas of clean crisp hops in typical American excess this zingy beer is full of light or-ange and citrus flavour complimented by the delicate caramel sweetness of the malts;this distinctive beer is complex yet very refreshing.✹ Porter (4.9% PORTER) A luxuriously silky body, its impeccably balanced rich flavours, its light and dry bitternesswith aromas of hedgerow fruits, all combine to make this effortlessly drinkable.

WADWORTH – Devizes, Wiltshire✹ 6X (4.3% BITTER) Copper-coloured ale with a malty and fruity nose, and some balancing hop character.The flavour is similar, with some bitterness and a lingering malty, but bitter finish. 40✹ Henry’s IPA (3.6% BITTER) A classic session beer with malt-led flavours. 40
