NOVEMBER 2019 VOL.12 ISSUE 11
BEAR CANYON SENIOR CENTER DEPARTMENT OF SENIOR AFFAIRS
The Bear Facts
The Department of Senior Affairs is a community leader who, in partnership with others, involves seniors and people of all ages in creating a community that enhances everyone's quality of life by providing opportunities to achieve their potential, share their wisdom, maintain their independence, and live in dignity.
A ttention Members,
Hello all! With the year quickly ending, there is a lot to recognize in the month of November.
First, on Saturday November 2, Bear Canyon and the Friends of Bear Canyon will be
hosting our annual Art Fest from 9am-3pm. With more than 70 vendors, this is a great way to get some shopping done for handmade crafts for the holidays! Please support the center and our vendors for an amazing event that has been ongoing for over 20 years!
On November 3, set your clocks back an hour for daylight savings.
The center will be closed Monday, November 11 in honor of Veterans’ Day and also Thursday, November 28 and Friday, November 29 for the Thanksgiving Holiday.
Many of you may have noticed some new faces at the front desk. Bear Canyon recently filled two vacant positions from recent retirements both last year and this year. We are thrilled to welcome Ya Vette Bailey as our new Office Assistant and Gabrielle Banuelos as our Program Assistant. Here is a little about them:
My name is Ya Vette Bailey and I am the new Office Assistant here at Bear Canyon Senior Center. I am excited to join the Bear Canyon Senior Center family and I am looking forward to serving our communities seniors! I am a new City of Albuquerque employee, but I come to Bear Canyon with over 22 years of office administration experience. I have lived in Albuquerque for several years and since coming to New Mexico from Wisconsin, New Mexico is now my home and I can honestly say that I love our New Mexico weather and our New Mexico Chile, both red and green!
My name is Gabrielle; however, most people call me Gabby. I have a bachelor’s degree in Business Management from the University of Phoenix as well as two years’ experience with the City of Albuquerque. I left for a little over a year to care for my children and am now coming back to continue my City of Albuquerque career with Senior Affairs. I am very excited to be joining the Bear Canyon team and look forward to getting to know everyone and serving the community to the best of my ability.
Please be sure to stop in and say hi and welcome them to our amazing center and team!
Have a great month.

Dancing with New Joy
Hello everyone, my name is Rose Lilliquist and I’ve been a member of the senior
centers since August 2017. I want to thank my “extended community family” of
line dancers. Two years ago, I discovered and joined the line dancing classes at
Manzano Mesa Multigenerational Center. My physical challenges are varied and
can be complicated due to being born with cerebral palsy but I received such won-
derful encouragement from the instructors and the other “beginner” dancers! At
that time, my leg braces went from my ankles up to my knees on both legs. I
eventually expanded to an additional line dancing class at Bear Canyon. My
doctors were extremely excited about the improvement in my balance, my in-
creased muscle strength, loss of weight and my determination to continue to a bet-
ter health path. I’ve been cancer-free for four years and after only two years of
line dancing, I now only wear ONE leg brace which is only from my ankle to mid-
calf and I can now dance on sketcher tennis shoes instead of my heavy orthopedic
shoes! I attended a regional line dancing Jamboree in Las Cruces, NM with 300+
other dancing enthusiasts! So many new friends, experiences and new joys…by
taking one single, bold step after another! Thank you City of Albuquerque, Senior
Centers, Staff, and volunteer instructors!

I would love to walk across the Rio Grande Gorge
Bridge! Could we set up a trip?
Thank you for the suggestion. Trips at Bear Canyon are
very popular and fill up quickly. As mentioned in
previous newsletters, we have begun to do pop-up trips as
a result of the high interest levels and numbers of all
trips. We will pass this along to our Activities
Coordinator to plan for a future pop-up trip at the best
opportune time. We are always open to other suggestions
for future pop-up trips as well to broaden experiences.
Do not schedule out to lunch and fundraiser on the
same week, we cannot afford it.
We completely understand the concern about having both
of these in the same week all while wanting to help/
participate in both. However, there are two separate
entities that schedule these different events monthly. One
of the two events is on a consistent set schedule basis,
while the other often has conflicts/time constraints of
availability. Regardless, when able, we can attempt to
communicate with the two separate entities about making
the best attempt to spread them out so those interested are
not conflicted within the same week as permitted.
Thank you to the Rio
Grande Players for bringing
the radio to life with their
re-creation of the radio
episodes of “Fibber McGee
and Molly” and “Jack Benny
and Rochester:” We had a
full house, they were very
entertaining and they
looked amazing!
