The Beacon The Value of Symbols May Volume 19 Issue 5 Recently, I was speaking with someone who is new to BBC about the wooden grilles at the front of the sanctuary that cover the organ speakers. I enjoyed sharing the signifi- cance of the symbols and what they represent and thought that people both new to BBC as well as those of us who’ve been here for many years could benefit from hearing about what is portrayed at the front of the sanctuary. The symbols represent some of the ways the church has communicated the changeless message of and about Jesus through the centuries. We intentionally picked Christian symbols that tie in with our location on Cape Cod and our proximity to the ocean. The Scallop Shell is a symbol of baptism, discipleship, evan- gelism, and martyrdom and it’s associated with James the son of Zebedee. James was one of three companions in the inner circle around Jesus. He was privileged to be present at the raising of Jairus’ daughter, at the transfiguration of Jesus, and in the garden of Gethsemane. Jesus had asked James and his brother John, “Are you able to drink the cup that I am going to drink (Mark 10:38-39)?” The two said they were ready. James demon- strated his commitment through his zeal for evange- lism and powerful witness that may have led to his being the first of the apostles to be martyred (Acts 12:1-2). The Scallop Shell is the symbol of James the fisher- man who gave his life for Christ. There is also a sense in which the scallop looks like a sunrise signifying the dawn of a new day, just as we rise from the waters of baptism to walk with Jesus in new life. The Fish is a symbol of Jesus and his followers. Our fish is a striped bass larger than any of us could dream of catching. In the early church, the fish was a way of professing one’s beliefs about the identity of Jesus and also of revealing one’s own identity as a Christian. Christians who would not renounce their faith in Jesus developed a secret code through which they could express their faith. So an acrostic was born — the first letters forming the word “ichthus” meaning fish. The letters stood for “Jesus Christ of God the Son Savior.” The symbol of the fish appears often in the walls of ancient catacombs and on cars today. The Anchor Cross is a symbol of hope. Hebrews 6:19 speaks of the hope we have in the promises of God as “a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul.” An anchor gives stability, especially in turbulent times. Sometimes, the anchor cross was depicted with the Greek or Latin word for “hope” intertwined. The anchor cross reminds us that the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross is sufficient for all us to be forgiven and that promise gives us hope and stability in even the most turbulent times. The Ship is a symbol of the church reminds us that following Jesus involves being part of a community. On a ship or in a church, we’re all in the same boat, even if that isn’t proper navy terminology. We are fellow passengers and we share whatever comes together. A ship also requires the cooperation of a number of people in order to be operated successfully. In the same way, the Apostle Paul writes that there are many kinds of spiritual gifts and abilities in the body of Christ which is the church. Jesus may be the pilot of the ship but he needs a capable and committed crew.

Recently, I was speaking with someone who is new to BBC about the wooden grilles at the front of the sanctuary that cover the organ speakers. I enjoyed sharing the signifi-cance of the symbols and what they represent and thought that people both new to BBC as well as those of us who’ve been here for many years could benefit from hearing about what is portrayed at the front of the sanctuary. The sail of the boat and the bow plowing through the water remind us that boats are not meant to be tied up at dock, they are made to move through water and sometimes that means the boat will be rocked. However, as long as Jesus is leading us forward in his mission, the movement will be for the sake of taking the church where it needs to go. The final symbol is found around all four of the others, it is the vine, branches, and fruit that we read about in John 15. Jesus tells us (John 15:5-8), “I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. My father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples.” Around all the symbols is the constant reminder of the importance of staying connected to Jesus so he can live in us as we become more fully devoted disciples and bear much fruit for God’s glory. The call to baptism, discipleship, evangelism, and hope through the fellowship of the church remains the same through the ages. I look forward to seeing you at BBC in May whether in worship or at one of the many events you can read about in this newsletter.

Our Faithful Shepherd: Songs of Peace Saturday, May 7 at 7:00 p.m.

On Saturday, May 7 at 7:00 p.m., we will celebrate the release of Chris Morris’ album, entitled Our Faithful Shepherd: Songs of Peace, with a performance by Chris which will include some of those songs from the album. This is an album of some great Christian music intended to be a blessing by providing soothing and comforting piano arrangements of some well-known Christian pieces. Admission to the concert is free. At the night of the concert, the album will be available for sale. If you’re unable to attend and would like to purchase an album, please contact Deb or David Quinones at (508) 945-9799 or [email protected]. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of the album will be donated to the Cape Cod Council of Churches’ Homeless Ministries. Please invite your friends for what will be an enjoyable evening!

Brewster in Bloom Sunday, May 8

“Brewster in Bloom” is right around the corner! This year marks the 30th anniversary of the festival. The parade will be on Sunday, May 8 and the theme for this year is “Blooming in Brewster.” There will be a decorating party at the Kautz’s house on Saturday, May 7 from 4:00—7:00 p.m. Hamburgers and hotdogs will be provided. Please bring a side dish to share. For directions to the Kautz’s home, please call the church office. If you want to walk in the parade, make sure to pick up a BBC t-shirt to wear. Small children can either walk with their parents or in the truck. On the day of the parade, the staging begins at 12 noon on Underpass Road. Parking is limited so we suggest carpooling, if possible. The parade starts at 1:00 p.m. and travels approximately 2 miles up Route 6A to Swamp Road. If you aren’t able to walk in the parade, we hope you will cheer us on from along the parade route. Lots of people join together in front of BBC. Invite some friends and have a great time!

Put a Whitecap in Your Spare Room The Brewster Whitecaps of the Cape Cod Baseball League are seeking individuals or families to host players for the Cape League season which runs from the second week of June to the beginning of August. Numerous BBC families have hosted players for the Cape League team in their town including the Defusco’s, Hilbig’s, LeSieur’s, and Scalise’s to name a few. The players are mostly finishing their first or second year of college and are traveling far from home to a place where they don’t know anybody. Being a host family is a great way to share Christian love and hospitality

and to have an impact on a young person’s life at a key time in their development. Some people choose to host temporary players who may only stay for a week or two, but who get a life time memory of playing in the Cape League. As a host you provide a place to sleep, plus a kitchen and washer and dryer to use and receive $15 a day reimbursement from the Whitecaps.

Hosting a player is an exciting experience for any household. You may find that a summer of hospitality turns into a lifelong friendship that includes seeing someone’s professional or even Major League debut, attending a wedding or celebrating the birth of a child. Please contact Pastor Doug, Whitecaps Housing Director Jennifer Kish at 508-896-2578, or visit www.brewsterwhitecaps.com for an email link.

Invite a Friend Sunday

Sunday, May 22

We had such a great time with “Invite a Friend Sunday” in February that we’re having another one! On May 22, our theme is “What's The Most Important Thing in Life?” Jesus had an answer to that question that Pastor Doug will be speaking about in a message that applies to all of us. Without giving too much away, although it may not come as a complete surprise, part of the answer involves love. To help make it a fun and festive Sunday, after each worship service all our Core Ministries will have tables with food they "love" as well as information about what they offer and how people can participate. We look forward to seeing you there — with a friend or neighbor.

Tribute Quartet Concert

Saturday, May 21 at 7:00 p.m.

Nationally-known recording artist Tribute Quartet has become one of the country’s most dynamic and beloved male quartets in all of gospel music. Gary Casto, Josh Singletary, Riley Harrison Clark, and Anthony Davis have proven to possess the winning combination of musical talent, warm and engaging personalities, and a focus that has kept them on the path to continued success since their inception in 2006. In an ever-changing musical climate, Tribute has remained steadfast in their goal to make great music that is both timely and relevant to the current musical scene and their loyal fan base while never wavering from their God-called mission to share Jesus with everyone with whom they come in contact. With a career that has already spanned the U.S., as well as several foreign countries, Tribute’s popularity continues to grow. The men of this quartet attribute that first and foremost to the favor of God on their lives and ministry, as well as their many fans and friends who continue to help grow this ministry one friend at a time. With several industry awards and chart-topping songs to their credit, Tribute’s music continues to bless and inspire their many supporters as well as regularly garner the attention of new fans.

Women’s Book Discussion Thursday, May 26

1:00 p.m. in the BBC Lounge

We will be discussing “Cold Sassy Tree” by Olive Ann Burns. Teecia Kent will facilitate.

Women’s Bible Study: The Book of Acts

Wouldn’t you LOVE to study the exciting book of Acts with a group of awesome women? “Why is the book of Acts so

exciting?” you ask. Well, because Acts tells us about the birth of the Church, about the coming of the Holy Spirit,

about murdering Saul becoming Apostle Paul, about people far from God finding themselves in his loving embrace…all

over the world! So, that makes it personal — it’s our story, too. Please join

us Tuesdays at 9:45-11:30 a.m. or 6:45-8:30 p.m.

Women’s Baby Shower for the Baby Center May 14 at 11:30 a.m.

You are cordially invited to the Women’s Baby Shower for the Baby Center in Hyannis on May 14, 2016 at 11:30 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall here at BBC. A potluck salad luncheon will be served. Coffee, tea, rolls and dessert will be provided. Babysitting will also be available in both nurseries. At noon, entertainment by Julie Charland of “Toast and Jam” will be followed by lunch and fellowship. Diapers of all sizes are the most needed gift, but spring and summer clothes and blankets are also appreciated. Sign up sheets will be located in the Fellowship Hall after each of the Sunday services or you can sign up online on the church website. Please indicate what you are bringing for potluck and if you will be bringing your child or children to the nursery. Hope to see you there!

ON THE ROAD TO AFRICA Matching Gift Opportunity Runs Through June 15

Just like Loaves & Fishes…Make Your Support Multiply! If you have been considering helping me get onto the mission field in Africa, now is the right time to make that first gift of support. I truly need your help. As last year at this time, a group of faithful International Ministries donors has made possible a special matching gift. Any new or increased pledge or new one time gift to a missionary will be doubled! (That is, until the funds are depleted. Last year, the money ran out long before June 15. When it’s gone, it’s gone.) Your support is very much needed and can make a genuine difference to the peace and safety in our world. Young seminarians, committed to serve God and their communities as pastors and advocates for peace, have few or no resources to get an education. Helping me serve them as a spiritual formation teacher and peace skills trainer, and provide books and other learning supplies, is a great gift to our hurting world.

Here are 3 Easy Ways:

Online: Go to International Ministries home page. Click on 2016 Matching Gift Opportunity at bottom of the homepage. Or, go to http://www.internationalministries.org/drives/27. Then scroll the Give boxes on the right to find and support Marilyn Raatz, other missionar-ies, or the general work of International Ministries. Thank you!

By mail: Make your check payable to International Ministries and write “2016 Spring Matching Gift—Marilyn Raatz” on the memo line. Mail the check to International Ministries, PO Box 851, Valley Forge, PA 19482-0851 by June 15, 2015. Thank you!

By phone: Call Carol toll-free at 1-800-222-3872, ext. 2323, and tell her that your gift is for the 2016 Spring Matching Opportunity. Please say that the gift is to support Marilyn Raatz! Thank you!

Multiply Your Gift, Multiply Your Impact, Multiply Peace!

ON THE ROAD TO AFRICA

Besides the Matching Gift Opportunity that is running right now until June 15, other good news continues as I garner support for Peace, Justice and Reconciliation ministry. I have enjoyed preaching and presenting the vision of peace to other congrega-tions here in Massachusetts—and they are responding positively.

One woman said to me last Sunday, “This ministry is powerful and we need it so dearly!” A congregant at another church told me, “As you spoke to us, explaining just how peacebuilding really works, I had an ‘Aha!’ moment about things that are going on right in my own family. I see now how a collective ‘brain shift’ is necessary for all us, and that it is doable.” I am very grateful for every opportunity to speak and encourage Christians about how the Holy Spirit can make immeasurable and quite miraculous changes in our families, communities, nation and world when we are willing to listen and respond to Christ’s message of peace.

In that way, every church and group I visit is a mission field for me. And, I receive the joy of fellowship with lots of committed women and men who want to help spread the good news of peace! It was a great afternoon when I visited with Nancy Sveden’s “Gang of Gals” Small Group a few weeks ago. Thank you all for your warm welcome and lots of fun. And great cookies, too, Nancy! And yet, because I believe God has assigned me to work in Africa, I pray for the day to come soon when I will be boarding the plane for South Africa. I am praying also that many more of you will join me as Peace Partners, supporting this sacred work. Please pray with me for:

Continued healing until I am fully and painlessly mobile. Safe travel to Colorado for the month of May for my required

Cross-Cultural Training. Knowledge and wisdom to strengthen relationships with local

partners when in Africa. Many more donors to heed God’s call to peacemaking, and to

support this ministry. Full funding by late summer. An airplane ride to Cape Town, South Africa by autumn!

Foot surgery has slowed me down for a few weeks, but I am steadily healing and hope to be “foot loose and fancy free” very

soon!

A few of the ‘gang of gals’ at Nancy Sveden’s.
