Pastor’s Letter January 28/29 Dear Parish Family, For almost 40 years JoAnn Morse has served our parish as a dedicated and inspiring leader of music. JoAnn began the children’s choir under Fathers Remy and Brannigan. She also assisted many other parishes here on the east end and taught at Our Lady of the Hamptons School. Eventually she became our music director, a position she has held for some 25 years. Of course life is full of change and growth. Recently JoAnn has discerned that it is time for her to step down from this ministry. This will allow her to enjoy precious time with her mom, her children, and her grandchildren. I am especially grateful to her for all these years of service and for pioneering some new changes in the years that we have worked together. In addition to our choirs we now have an active young musicians’ string program and a wonderful and talented group of cantors who lead us in song each week.
Music is a very important part of worship here and we will continue to build a strong and vibrant music program. Over the next few weeks Dominick Abbate will be taking the reins as organist and music program director. Dominick grew up in Southampton and now works with his father John at the Brockett Funeral Home where they are the directors. He is obviously multi-talented and is a skilled organist and experienced choir director. Most recently Dominick has been the director at the Old Whalers Church in Sag Harbor. Please join me this weekend in expressing our gratitude to JoAnn for her ministry here at Sacred Hearts. Also, please help me welcome Dominick as our new director when he begins his ministry in a few weeks. If you ask JoAnn or Dominick what is the best gift they could receive from a
community they would surely remind you of these famous words attributed to St. Augustine. The one who sings prays twice! Sincerely yours in Christ,
Rev. Michael A. Vetrano

Be A Year Round Friend and Supporter of SHJM It’s that time of year when the days get colder and a time when many SHJM parishioners have active plans. The migration of summer visitors, people heading to warmer climes for the winter, vacations, and travels all diminish the numbers of those who are able to worship here each week. But please remember that our parish itself is here year round and we never take a break from service and ministry. Last year we began a program of planned, automated giving, called First Fruits. It was a huge success and well over 10% of our supporters participate in this way. It enabled our parish to maintain a more consistent year round income. Automated giving can help insure that our parish remains strongly supported. So here are some ways you can do this:
First Fruits: The easiest, and best if you are technologically challenged is to enroll in First Fruits. All you need to do is give us a void check and fill out a Frist Fruits Form. You can get one on our website, at the rectory, or at the back of church. First Fruits transfers a contribution either weekly or monthly from your checking account to the church.
Online Bill Pay: Chances are your bank already had a online check writing service called Bill Pay. If you have online access to your checking account you can set it up to write a regular check to SHJM. Just visit your online banking site and set it up for the contribution you desire. Remember to include your Envelope Number. Pay Pal: Pay pal is another way you can make regular contributions. Soon it will also be a way that you can contribute using Credit Cards. Check our website and check back here for more information.

Beloved and misunderstood, that’s what we can say about the Beatitudes, the heart of this Sunday’s
readings. In fact, they are far more closely connected to the first reading that tells us to seek justice
and humility than we might realize. What the Beatitudes are not is a message of consolation for all
kinds of suffering. Rather they acknowledge the reality of suffering and remind us of our need for
God to endure and overcome it. A more accurate translation of “Blessed” is “Truly honorable” are
you, amazing in just how contrary that idea is to a mentality that aims toward wealth, power, and
prestige. So, truly honorable are we when we work for justice no matter the cost, humbly relying on
God to sustain us in our efforts.
