Presidents Report.

Where did July go???????

The Xmas in July has been & gone it was a great night, so much so I am looking at doing it again next year. The Mount Gravatt Show is on the weekend of the 28th & 29th & I guess that it will be over by the time you read this newsletter September will be Redfest followed by the Truck Show in Gatton Good news on “Govt Grants” we have been very successful in our applications in as much that we have been granted 3 new lathes, an air filter, folding chairs and solar panels for electricity generation. The new chairs are in the Club House. The new Jet lathe is very popular with those members who have used it. The solar panels are on the roof & the big lathes have been ordered Rob McGregor has started a “book exchange” in the Club House, the cost of the book should be marked on it, all you have to do is select your book/books put the money in the container on the book shelf and the books are yours, when you are finished with them you are welcome to bring them back so the cycle will start over again. The local member for Lytton will visit the Club on Wednesday the 15th August (he has promised to be on time) If we can have a display to impress him, he may look kindly on our Club in the future. This must go close to being the shortest president’s report ever. Until next month Regards Bill. President.

Gumdale Historical Display. Adrian & I had a very enjoyable day out with this group last Sunday, not much in the way of sales but lots of interest in the turning and lots of people to talk to, Arian was in his element. (Some people were glad to get away from our stand and Adrian) We believe that it was a good day for our Club Bill & Adrian

Editorial. Hi once again from your editor. Now we have Red fest, Truck and Machinery Show @Gatton, Redcliffe Wood Expo, I will not be able to comment on the Mt.Gravatt Show as I wasn’t there and no one let me know how things were, so hop on the grape vine, if you are interested. I’m out of action as a result of adverse effects with new medications, once my body stops reacting; then in two weeks’ time I have to increase the dose, so back to square one; I hope not. I’ll be back on track soon, hopefully. It’s very hard to accept and realise that your body is not to well and you’re breaking down quicker than you except, I’ve played hard and worked hard and enjoyed my past, BUT things catch up with you. On a good note, my Heart Surgeon doesn’t need to see me anymore, I just need a good plumber, yep I’ve got a heart. I must say thanks to my close friends whom have supported me. On a happier note my daughter produced another Grand Daughter for me, that is 7 grand kids and 1 Great Grand Son, Proud Poppy.

• Derek is ordering more Club shirts and also more turning jackets. Checking prices with David Drescher and Carbatec.

• Eric Cameron moved that the Club purchase 2 more small chucks (90mm) for use in the shed. Seconded Steve Schuhmacher.

• Bruce read out the letter he drafted for interest in the Cleveland Hub. He will now send it to the relevant parties.

• Some first class timber offered to the Club was purchased, and after further measurement, will be offered to Club members at a reasonable price.

• A reminder of the Christmas in July on 14.07.2012 at the Manly Bowls Club. Remember to bri ng a gift for the raffle.

• A thank you letter to be sent to Bridgestone Select tyre firm, thanking them for donating tyres for the trailer.

Whilst on the subject of Demos, please respect the person who is giving his time to improve your skills, and entertaining you, and cut the chat, there is only a couple, but it distracts from the demonstrator.

How to build a for Termite container Tools needed: 2 x lrntr /lOO cm Poly Pipe 4 x screw on caps 4 x Poly collar thread with screw on one end for cap Blue glue to place around connectors Hack saw, Drill, Jig Saw Clamps to hold poly pipe Scissors/Stanley knife to cut thick clear plastic Long strips of cardboard to place in cylinder Clap the pipe securely to cut poly pipe in half; you need to decide which way you will make the holes. In the poly pipe either drill a number of holes all around the pipe using a drill bit. Or Draw 2 straight lines with a black texture about 1 em wide, 4 or 5 times around the pipe. Drill a whole at top and bottom of strip then use the jigsaw to cut the strips out.

Being mindful to leave room for the adaptor to go over the main poly pipe Glue adaptor over end of the poly pipe to screw the cap on but first. Drill holes in the end of the cap to make a small square hole, it needs to be big enough for you to look inside when cylinder is set up in the ground. Glue/silicone on the inside of cap hole you just made with the think clear plastic. After the assembling of the poly pipe, collar thread and cap dig a hole in the ground large enough to sit the whole assembly to just under the screw on cap. Place the long strips of cardboard inside, replace cap back on the cylinder and cover the clear plastic some suggestion small statue or pot and check every month or two. If you find mud going up anywhere on the inside of cylinder that is a sign you have white ants and you should CALL THE PROFESSIONALS.

Also at Capalaba Produce is a product called Pigeon 5oo. It is a do it yourself spray product to spray around your home. Creosote is another product sprayed around your boundary will protect from White Ants.[you have to get used to the smell for a while, but it works.]

The Billycart King. Our member and Chandlers Hero, Mr Bob Hains is king of the mountain --- The Carindale Recreation Reserve mountain. Says Matthew Hayden from the Sunday Mail/ Homeground page. This is the location for the Brisbane Billycart Championships. This is the fifth year Bob, whom is only 72, will compete in the open section, and hoping to make it three consecutive wins on Aug 19th. But be warned, once you start you might get hooked on billycart racing. Its affair adrenalin rush, Bob said. Off the ramps in Brisbane I go from 0 to 30km/h in about one and a half seconds. Yes Uncle Bob is our hero and I think we have other members who have caught the bug. Best of luck to you all. Mitre box plan.

Mitre boxes are useful in cutting angles of 45 degrees. It can be easy adjusted to cut different depths, and the angle can be changed from 45 to 135 degrees. Wooden mitre boxes are often made by the woodworker himself. Wooden mitre box is composed of three pieces – a bottom and two sides. It is necessary that the bottom piece be uniform in width and thickness, and have joined edges, and it is well to prepare the other pieces in the same way. The kerf for the saw to run in should be made with a back saw or a panel saw. For cutting the kerf you should use the same saw that you will normally use for mitring. If possible use hard fine grained wood, such as straight grained Ausie Hardwoods e.g. Tassie Oak. Although soft wood is easier to work with and will serve your purpose, yet a far more accurate and enduring mitre box may be constructed from hardwood. Do not use any wood liable to warp and twist. The least inaccuracy in making the mitre box will result in a finished box which is worthless and worse than not at all. Testing after assemblage: Place a straight piece of wood in the box with one edge resting against one of the sides on the bottom and placing your saw in the 45 degrees kerf, saw through the piece of wood while holding it firmly in position with your thumb pressing it against the inside of the box. Do the same way with another piece and then lay the pieces on a flat surface with the two bevelled, or diagonal, ends together and with your try square test them to see if their edges come true with the square. If everything has been done carefully you will find that the pieces form a perfect square (right angle corner). The measurements are given in millimetres, while the measurements given in inches are in brackets (1 inch = 25, 4 mm).

A Few Funnies. Frozen Crabs and the Blonde Flight Attendant. A lawyer boarded an airplane in New Orleans with a box of frozen crabs and asked a blonde flight attendant

to take care of them for him. She took the box and promised to put it in the crew's refrigerator for safe

keeping.

He advised her that he was holding her personally responsible for them staying frozen, mentioning in a very

haughty manner that he was a lawyer, and proceeded to rant at her about what would happen if she let

them thaw out.

Needless to say, she was annoyed by his behaviour.

Shortly before landing in New York, she used the intercom to announce to the entire cabin, "Would the

lawyer who gave me the crabs in New Orleans please raise your hand?"

Not one hand went up, so she took them home and ate them.

THE CREATION OF HUMANS

A little girl asked her father,

"How did the human race appear?"

The father answered,

"God made Adam and Eve and they had children, and so was all mankind made.."

Two days later the girl asked her mother the same question..

The mother answered,

"Many years ago there were monkeys from which the human race evolved."

The confused girl returned to her father and said,

" Dad, how is it possible that you told me the human race was created by God, and Mom said they

developed from monkeys?"

The father answered, "Well, dear, it is very simple. I told you about my side of the family and your mother

told you about hers."

and that’s when the fight started.

I would like to share an experience with you about drinking and driving. As most of you well know, some of us have been known to have had brushes with the authorities on our way home from the odd social session over the years. A couple of nights ago, I was out for a few drinks with some friends and had a few too many beers and some rather nice red wine. Knowing full well I may have been slightly over the limit, I did something I've never done before: I took a bus home. Sure enough, I passed a police road block but as it was a bus, they waved it past. I arrived home safely without incident which was a real surprise, as I have never driven a bus before and am not sure where I got it.

CLEANING UP AFTER YOU

Once again the Dust extraction system has been mentioned again.

Please, after you finish on any of the workshop machines clean up after yourselves. Members seem to get a little lax at times and need a reminder. When you go to use a machine I am sure you would like to find it and the surrounds in a clean condition. Two Irishmen were standing at the base of a flagpole, looking up. A blonde walks by and asked them what they were doing. Paddy replied, 'We're supposed to be finding the height of this flagpole, but we don't have a ladder.' The blonde took out an adjustable spanner from her bag, loosened a few bolts and laid the flagpole down. She got a tape measure out of her pocket, took a few measurements, and announced that it was 18 feet 6 inches. Then, she walked off. Mick said to Paddy, 'Isn't that just like a blonde! We need the height, and she gives us the bloody length. Scrollsaw Pattern. To all the Scrollers and Box makers out there, here is a little something exquisite for all of you to try, it’s a little bit extreme as far as patterns go, but with the right timber and application could make for a nice inlay for the lid of a Box. Or adapt the plan for all sides of a box, as well as the lid.
