Summary
Our eight day tour of the Berchtesgadener Alps was blessed with perfect weather with temperatures ranging
from 25°C to 31°C. The itinerary was fully completed, and the group was more than happy with the varied
majestic scenery of mountains and three very different valleys. Highlights included Golden Eagles visiting their
eyrie, close-up views of a Black Woodpecker, Chamois kids frolicking on patches of snow, and Marmots
sunbathing, but ever watchful of the skies. Butterflies such as Clouded Apollo, Swallowtail, Chequered Skipper
and Black-veined White were observed. Spring was later this year compared to previous tours, but we recorded
and marvelled at swathes of Globeflowers, Alpine Snowbells, Leafless-stemmed Globularia and Spring, Clusius’s
and Bladder Gentians. Pristine Lady’s Slipper Orchid, Fly Orchid, Bird’s-nest and Coralroot Orchids lined our
paths in the National Park. A visit to the beautiful city of Salzburg, the quaint Market town of Berchtesgaden and
the infamous mountain retreat of Adolf Hitler, the Eagle’s Nest, were also included, without travelling more than
200 miles during the entire tour
Day 1 Sunday 31st May
Kastensteinerwand Alm and Alpenhotel Hundsreitlehen
Weather: 27 °C – Hazy sun, humid, clouds building. Still. Dawn found most of the group at Gatwick, but we all
met up at arrivals in Salzburg, where Andy and Ingrid were waiting for us with Clive and Jane. We were soon
loaded up into the vehicles and away. It was a short, half-hour journey to Kastensteinerwand Alm, perched on a
cliff above Bischofsweisen village. Here we had time to get to know each other, and take in the majesty of the
surrounding mountains from the cliff top viewpoint. Our first plant, seen in the car park, was Alpine Thistle
(Carduus defloratus); then, as we headed uphill, we noticed Sword-leaved Helleborine (Cephalanthera longifolia) and
Lily of the Valley (Convallaria majalis) in flower and saw a large tuffet of Alpine Basil-thyme (Clinopodium (Acinos)
alpinum) which proved to be the first of many. Quintin was keen to see Herb Paris (Paris quadrifolia), and we had
success within our first half hour when we found several good specimens in flower, then Margaret spotted some
flowering May Lily (Maianthemum bifolium); both these pleasures were often repeated.
Andy pointed out the mountains and valleys we were to visit over the coming week, whilst a Wood Warbler sang
in the Scot’s Pine (Pinus sylvestris) above us. Ingrid and Chris were lucky enough to glimpse a female Roe Deer. At
midday, we enjoyed a Bavarian buffet lunch, then drove to our Hotel base for the week. There was plenty of
time to settle in before we assembled for an early evening stroll through the nearby woods and meadows before
dinner. Only five strides into the walk, Andy pointed out a White Wagtail. Nice ferns found were Hard Shield-
fern (Polystichum aculeatum) and Green Spleenwort (Asplenium viride); in the damp flushes we saw Marsh Valarian
(Valariana dioica), mints and Water Avens (Geum rivale).
Andy drew our attention to several Alpine Newts in a shady woodland pond, as they hung in the clear water
accompanied by a single male Great Crested Newt, we also noted interesting plants such as Mossy Sandwort
(Moehringia muscosa) and Stinking Wood-salad (Aposeris foetida) - does it really smell of old mashed potato? Bird

activity was low, probably due to the heat, and more were heard than seen including Robin, Chiff-chaff,
Blackcap, Blackbird and a Great-spotted Woodpecker. Coming back to the hotel on the path through the hay
meadows, we noted the similarities and differences in Horseshoe Vetch (Hippocrepis comosa) and Bird’s-foot
Trefoil (Lotus corniculatus), while delicate grasses such as Crested Dog's-tail (Cynosorus cristata) and Quaking Grass
(Briza media) were also seen. Masses of Ragged Robin (Silene (Lychnis) flos-cuculi) and a lone flower of Spreading
Bellflower (Campanula patula) the first of many and spotted by Margaret, completed the wonderful start to our
holiday.
Day 2 Monday 1st June
Klausbachtal and Ramsau
Weather: 28 °C – Hazy sun, humid, clouds building. Still. We enjoyed breath taking views on the short
drive to Klausbachtal, which lies beyond the banks of the turquoise Hintersee lake. The tourist bus took us up to
the top of the valley which is just inside Austria. As soon as we alighted from the bus, most of us saw a White
Throated Dipper on the rocky bank of the dam pond. The first plants of interest that we noted were large
quantities of Wood Crane's-bill (Geranium sylvaticum) in a meadow across the stream. Entering the woodland path
we saw Narcissus-leaved Anemone (Anemone narcissifolia) and Spring Heath (Erica carnea).
We soon emerged into the alpine meadows awash with Clusius' Gentian (Gentiana clusii) and Mountain Avens
(Dryas octopetala) representing the colours of the Bavarian flag, blue and white. More blue came in the form of
Matted Globularia (Globularia cordifolia) and white represented by Alpine Butterwort (Pinguicula alpina). The most
common orchids here are a frilly pale-pink form of Early-purple Orchid (Orchis mascula subsp. speciosa), which
were flowering in abundance.
At this point the groups naturally divided into birders and botanists. Clive was the first to pick out a Common
Buzzard as it circled above the trees. It gave us time to take note of its outline and the patterning on the
underwings and the tail, so that there would be no mistakes if a Golden Eagle was spotted later. Butterflies
included Mountain Green-veined White, Orange Tip, Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary, Dingy Skipper and Small
Blue. Before we left the higher meadow Andy trained the spotting scope on an Arolla Pine perched high up on a
crag; simultaneously with Dawn pointing it out to the botanists on the path below. This rare species (in
Berchtesgaden) is confined to the higher slopes, usually silhouetted against the skyline. In the past this pine was
felled extensively and its valuable timber used for panelling and carving.
Back into some welcome shade in the woods, we saw Fly Honeysuckle (Lonicera xylosteum), Asarabacca (Asarum
europea) with ground hugging mouse-like flowers, Beech Fern (Phegopteris connectilis) and the branched Wood
Horsetail (Equisetum sylvaticum), closely followed by Coralroot Orchid (Corallorhiza trifida), admired by all.
We found shade by the river to have our lunch whilst trying hard not to sit on a carpet of One-flowered
Wintergreen (Moneses uniflora). Soon the whole group was treated to a splendid view of a male Black Woodpecker
hacking off lumps of bark from a nearby dead Norway Spruce (Picea abies). Nearly everyone managed to see him
through the spotting scope before he flew off. The path led us steeply down towards the suspension bridge and,
just before a small stream plunged down into the ravine, Marion spotted the black back and white belly of a
Water Shrew, as it scampered around between the boulders.

Lady's Slipper Orchid (Cypripedium calceolus) was the highlight of the afternoon, in great quantity and condition. At
the opposite end of the scale for size Ann spotted a plant of Alpine Bastard Toadflax (Thesium alpinum).
With an increasing amount of skyline to scour, a Golden Eagle was spotted by Jane T. and, later, a pair of eagles
was seen by Paul, Carolyn, Jane E. and Clive. Quintin was impressed by the size of a Common Juniper (Juniperus
communis subsp. communis) towering above its rivals, which were content to remain more like large shrubs rather
than a tree. The final half hour of the walk before we met up at the minibuses can only be described as a sea of
Birdseye Primrose (Primula farinosa) with the occasional sprinkling of Common Butterwort (Pinquicula vulgaris) and
Tofield’s Asphodel (Tofieldia calyculata).
We stopped off in Ramsau on the return drive to enjoy the charms of the quaint Bavarian village and photograph
the famous baroque church of St Sebastian. This evening the group was driven to the Zipfhausl Gasthof for a
delicious evening meal.
Day 3 Tuesday 2nd June
Königssee and Obersee
Weather: 28°C - Hot sun all day. Cloud building late pm. Still. Today we set off to visit the delights of
the Königssee Lake. After parking up, we were greeted by a Fieldfare, perching in full view. We were soon sailing
along the 200m-deep, crystal clear, fjord-like lake. From the boat we could admire the magnificent Watzmann
Mountain (2713m) with its imposing Ostwand wall providing a dramatic back drop to the chapel of St
Bartholomä and its famous terracotta-coloured domes.
We set off in different directions, the botanists following the path along the lakeside where we encountered close
views of flowering Bog Bean (Menyanthes trifoliata) and Common Cotton-grass (Eriophotum latifolium) in the damp
meadows as well as many varieties of Early Marsh Orchid (Dactylorhiza incarnata). The newly-enthused botanists
were getting keen and noticed several sedges that we identified as Common Yellow-sedge (Carex viridula subsp.
oedocarpa), Greater Tussock-sedge (C. paniculata) and Common Sedge (C. nigra). Other notable plants seen
included Fly Orchid (Ophrys insectifera), Lesser Butterfly Orchid (Platanthera bifolia), Swallowwort (Vincetoxicum
hirundinaria) and Dwarf Milkwort (Polygala amarella). The birders had headed inland; the heat was intense with the
bright sunshine bouncing off the stone, so the group settled into the shade to watch a pair of Golden Eagles
arriving at their eyrie. Dorothy was lucky enough to see the eaglet stretch up out of the nest, when it was her turn
to look through the scope.
We lunched as we sailed further down the lake to the Salet Alm, where the first plant to greet us was Yellow flag
(Iris pseudocorus). From here, we walked in two different groups to Obersee at the end of the valley. The Obersee
lake is totally surrounded by vertical limestone cliffs with a single trail leading to a small Alm nestled under the
highest waterfall in Germany, the Roethbach falls. Some of the group hiked along the trail after admiring the
alpine scenery perfectly reflected in its waters. As we looked closer at the dappled moist undergrowth, we
noticed the slow movement of Common Toad and Common Frog, giving us a great opportunity to compare
species. Butterflies were in abundance and everyone had an opportunity to see Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary,
Chequered Skipper and Clouded Apollo. The more leisurely inclined also saw Common Frog, several butterflies
and plants including Dwarf Elder (Sambucus ebulus), Perennial Honesty (Lunaria redivida), Wolf’s-bane (Aconitum
vulparia), Yellow Betony (Stachys alopecuros), Large Bitter-cress (Cardamine amara) and Water Forget-me-not

(Myosotis scorpiodes) in a wonderful wet meadow that was awash with marsh orchids, mostly deep purple ones. In
the late afternoon, we sailed back up the entire length of the lake in the electric powered boats, enjoying the
gentle, quiet ride and getting a last look at the vertiginous mountains around the lake. A riverside walk provided a
few more additions to the plant list such as Cabbage Thistle (Cirsium oleraceum), White Deadnettle (Lamium album)
and Narrow-leaved Bitter-cress (Cardamine impatiens).
As it was so warm in the evening, we sat out on the terrace to go through the species lists, aware of the Hohes
Göll and Hohes Brett mountains developing an orange hue as the sun set. According to the locals, this signifies a
sunny day tomorrow. Later, our musings were interrupted by a dramatic moon rise over the Hohes Göll, first
appearing as a bright silver sliver, then disappearing again but lighting up a wisp of cloud above, before
reappearing and rising to brighten the night sky, Moya managed to get good enough photos to act as a reminder
of such a great event.
Day 4 Wednesday 3rd June
Eagle’s Nest and Rossfeld
Weather: 27 °C - Long, hot sunny periods, cloud building late pm. Still. We drove to Obersalzberg,
where we got an early bus up to the Eagle’s Nest, perched on the top of the Kehlstein Mountain (1834m).We
enjoyed the fabulous views during the 15-minute bus ride, marvelling at the blue skies, stark snow-capped
mountains and lush green valley far below, dotted with attractive farms and villages. We entered Hitler’s
infamous building via a 400ft-long tunnel, where the original Art Deco brass lift took us up another 400ft
through the rock into the middle of the house. As we had beaten the crowds, we experienced the Eagle’s Nest
without hordes of visitors.
We walked up to the Edelweiss memorial cross, scanning the skies for eagles and other raptors, but today only
Alpine Chough flew acrobatically around showing off their yellow beaks and red feet. We were also treated to
views of several Alpine Accentors. One obligingly waited for Paul to change the lens on his camera and allowed
him to fire off 3 or 4 frames before it left the scene. Moya and Margaret saw the same bird return to the same
snow patch a little later and also spied a Water Pipit flitting from one Dwarf Mountain Pine (Pinus mugo) to
another to perch on the top and sing.
Flowers up here included dainty Alpine Snowbell (Soldanella alpina), Bears-ear (Primula auricula), Oxlip (Primula
elatior) and White Butterbur (Petasites albus) with newly emerging domes of flowers; we saw this in all its stages
today, as we descended. At the view point a distant rock sported flowering Dwarf Alpenrose (Rhodothamnus
chamaecistus); however, much more was seen later at close quarters. Mezereon (Daphne mezereum) was also
abundant and in flower. The Zig-zag path down is always a great botanical treat and it did not disappoint us
today. We added some real treasures to our list, Cilliate Rock-jasmine (Androcace chamaejasme), Chamois Cress
(Hornungia (Hutchinsia) alpina), Alpine Pasque Flower (Pulsatilla alpina) and Alpine Bartsia (Bartsia alpina).
After lunch we drove up the Rossfeld toll road to gain elevation and cooler temperatures. The road serpentines
up to nearly 1600m affording wonderful views across the mountains of Bavaria and into Austria. The meadows
are botanically rich and surrounded by shady spruce woodlands, a delight to explore. The first plants seen were
Leafy Lousewort (Pedicularis foliosa) and Tuberous Comfrey (Symphytum tuberosum). Some of the group hiked up to
the highest peak on the Rossfeld, the Ahornbüchsenkopf (1604m) which gave them a 360 degree view of the

surrounding mountains, including views of the Kehlstein Mountain with the Eagle’s Nest perched high on top of
the cliff, where we had been that morning. Those taking the lower path saw Golden Cinquefoil (Potentilla aurea)
and Tozzia (Tozzia alpina) but, perhaps what was really notable, to both groups, was the sheer quantity of the
many varieties of flowers we saw: ‘hillsides awash with flowers’ was the term foremost in our minds. We all met
up in the alpine Gasthof for afternoon refreshments. Andy set up the spotting scope and we all got to see some
Chamois, resting on a patch of snow.
Back at the hotel, we paddled in the Kneipp (Hydrotherapy) pool in the grounds, to cool off and refresh our
feet.
Day 5 Thursday 4th June
Hellbrunn and Salzburg
Weather: 30°C – Hot sun, clear skies all day. Still. Today we drove to the Hellbrunn Palace and, in the
dappled shade of the arboretum, we admired magnificent trees including Giant and Dawn Redwoods
(Sequioadendron giganteum and Metasequoia glyptostroboides), Weymouth Pine (Pinus strobus), and Tulip Tree
(Liriodendron tulipifera) in flower. We were amazed by the sheer size of the sturgeon in the ornamental ponds. We
were lucky enough to see a Red Squirrel above us on a tree branch, but too much in the shade for good photos.
Some of us were more than happy to witness a classic car rally taking place at the Palace today, bringing back
memories of cars once owned in our youth.
From here we took a bus into the centre of Salzburg, to explore the old town. Most of the group then opted to
accompany the leaders up onto the Moenchberg hill, a nature reserve high above the city that offers views of the
baroque domes and roof tops below. Two tiny ruderal weeds, spotted by Ann near the Water Mill, were Hairy
Bitter-cress (Cardamine hirsuta) and Wall Speedwell (Veronica arvensis). The limestone wall at the top of the steps
was a rock garden in its own right, with huge quantities of sky-blue Harebell (Campanula rotundifolia), purple Ivy-
leaved Toadflax (Cymbalaria muralis), yellow Alpine Hawkweed (Hieraceum alpinum agg.), and creamy white Hedge
Bedstraw (Galium album). Still heading upwards, we found Fox-and-Cubs (Pilosella aurantiaca) and Small Balsam
(Impatiens parviflora). We stopped to admire a delightful garden which gave us time to catch our breath.
Our picnic was enjoyed at another great viewpoint and Sanfoin (Onobrychis montana) added to the ambience. After
lunch we found Dog-rose (Rosa canina agg.) in flower and further along some Dusky Crane’s-bill (Geranium
phaeum). We were also treated to a very acrobatic fly-by of Common Kestrel and we watched Common Swifts
dashing around at eye level, twisting and weaving after the airborne insects.
Back down we met up with Paul, Carolyn and Harold who had explored the old town, all enjoying the café
culture of the city. Soon we were heading to the mountains in the minibuses and the cool peace of the hotel was
very welcome after the hustle and bustle of a city visit. As usual, the bird list for today contained the most
species seen in one day.

Day 6 Friday 5th June
Jenner
Weather: 30 °C Hot sun all day, clear skies. Slight breeze. At the Jenner mountain today, the ski lift
whisked us up to the summit, where we alighted at 1800m, inhaling the cool mountain air. We spied Chamois
resting, as ever, on a patch of snow, as we re-assembled at the top station. Dwarf Alpenrose (Rhodothamnus
chamaecistus), Spring Heath (Erica cinerea) and Leafless-stemmed Globularia (Globularia nudicaulis) covered huge
areas of the mountainside as we took the path towards the summit. The very distinctive Hybrid Buttercup
(Ranunculus hybridus) was admired too. At the view point the spotting scope was set up and Clive found more
Chamois resting on the snow, which could be viewed by everyone. On the rocks nearby, the ever sharp-eyed
Ann spotted a gnarled dwarf shrub clinging to the rock face: it had tiny four-petalled green flowers and proved
to be Dwarf Buckthorn (Rhamnus pumila).
Some of the group opted out of the longer hike around the Jenner Mountain, so enjoyed the alpine heights for a
bit longer with Dawn and then descended to the middle station (1200m) by chair lift and strolled the gently
undulating panorama path to meet the others coming along. The rest began their descent to the middle station
and hiking through the Dwarf Mountain Pine (Pinus mugo) heard a Ring Ouzel. Ingrid pointed out a group of
pristine White Crocus (Crocus caeruleus, formerly C. albiflorus) daintily gracing a snow-filled depression on the
alpine meadow, and the group enjoyed clusters of vibrant violet Alpine Snowbell (Soldanella alpina) along our trail.
A small flock of Red Crossbills flew past Ingrid and Margaret and just above the heads of Andy and Chris. Jane
T. spotted the only pink Beaked Lousewort (Pedicularis rostratocapitata) seen on this tour as we stopped to take a
rest, and we all marvelled at the sight of a slope of Globeflower (Trollius europaeus) with their round yellow flower
heads standing out against a cloudless blue sky.
At the Schneibstein mountaineers’ house (1600m), we enjoyed a hearty lunch then continued our hike down
through flowery meadows and open Larch (Larix decidua) forest, then into the cool shade of old growth forest of
Silver Fir (Abies alba) and Spruce (Picea abies), some of which are 300 years old. With the last chance to scour the
Schneibstein Mountain with the scope, we managed to find two female Alpine Ibex grazing on the skyline, and
compare the differences in size and colour between the Ibex and the more familiar, sleeker chamois. On our way
we identified Alpine Rockcress (Arabis alpina), Large Bitter-cress (Cardamine amara) and showy unfurling Hard-
fern (Blechnum spicant).
As we crossed the Alpine meadows, Andy and Barry ensured everyone had good sightings of Alpine Marmots,
sitting on mossy rocks near our path, and we met up with the other group, who were more than happy to
indicate plants recorded, such as Alpine Marsh Orchid (Dactylorhiza alpestris). Jill and Quintin shared the news that
they had seen a Crested Tit at very close quarters. Welcome shelter from the sun was provided by the woodland,
which was itself lit up by huge quantities of flowering Perennial Honesty (Lunaria redivida) and Round-leaved
Saxifrage (Saxifraga rotundifolia). One last plant of note today was Brown Clover (Trifolium badium) showing its
deep yellow flowers, that age to a warm chestnut brown.

Day 7 Saturday 6th June
Berchtesgaden, Boeckleweiher Moos and Wimbachtal
Weather: 31 °C - Hot sun, clear skies in am. Cloud building in pm. Still. All of the group wished to
have a wander around the thriving town of Berchtesgaden with its 800 years of history. Armed with a map they
were free to explore the pretty narrow streets and shops.
We then set off to Böcklweiher Moos, a very different habitat from any we had visited so far: this is a damp
acidic raised bog, enabling us to see a completely new range of plants. Upon arrival the first botanical record
called out by many was Bulrush or Reedmace (Typha latifolia) edging the pond, further out was some Mare's-tail
(Hippurus vulgaris). As we walked through the flower strewn meadow not only did we admire the beautiful
tapestry of the many orchids, but we also added Great Burnet (Sanguisorba major) to our list. Another clubmoss:
this time, Interrupted Clubmoss (Lycopodium annotinum) carpeted the woodland floor. Once we reached the bog,
we discovered Bog Rosemary (Andromeda polifolia), Cranberry (Vaccinium oxycoccus), Round-leaved Sundew (Drosera
rotundifolia) and Great Sundew (D. longifolia); all were admired and duly photographed, along with Hare's-tail
Cotton-grass (Eriophorum vaginatum) and Deergrass (Tricophorum cespitosum). We saw the rare Keeled Skimmer,
posing on low branches in the sun. We also photographed a striking Golden-ringed Dragonfly, first seen by
Quintin.
Out in the open meadows again we noted Meadow Saffron (Colchicum autumnale) and Brook Thistle (Cirsium
rivulare), as well as some Marsh Helleborine (Epipastis palustris), tantalisingly nearly in flower. We enjoyed lunch in
the shade by the stream before setting off for the final walk of our tour at Wimbach gorge and valley. Great
Horsetail (Eqiusetum telematia) and Mountain Lungwort (Pulmonaria montana) were our first sightings. Then walking
up through the imposing gorge we travelled through 50 million years of geological history and admired the force
of the clear blue water that thundered down through the changing rock strata beneath the gantries. Dennis
walked the gorge several times to get the perfect photograph with challenging exposure and shutter speeds. We
also had good views of White-throated Dipper and Grey Wagtail. Some of the group went ahead, hiking up
through the meadows on a little used path to get onto the central scree. From that vantage point they were soon
observing a Golden Eagle gliding effortlessly along the high cliffs enclosing the valley. They also found a clump
of Lady’s Slipper Orchid (Cypripedium calceolus) so close to the path that it could easily be trodden on. A local
hiker wanted to know what they were looking at and was amazed to see the orchid right by a path she had been
walking for over 10 years, without ever seeing it.
The rest of the group, at a more leisurely pace, took time to find and examine the botanical interest along the
way; noting some Intermediate Wintergreen (Pyrola intermedia) and sniffing several Fragrant Orchids (Gymnadenia
conopsea agg.). Wild Cotoneaster (Cotoneaster intergerrimus) was found and another couple of plants of Alpine Bastard
Toadflax (Thesium alpinum), this time seen by more people. The last exciting discovery was an extra tall Fly
Orchid (Ophrys insectifera) with 13 perfect flower heads: it gave us all a buzz, being a very fitting way to end this
wonderful week.
Reluctantly we left the rugged beauty of the crumbling mountains of the Wimbach valley and headed back down
the valley. We stopped briefly for refreshments at an old Bavarian Gasthof, thankful for the shaded beer garden
and, once re-grouped, we were soon back at the hotel after a packed and varied day.

Day 8 Sunday 7th June
Salzburg
Weather: 30 °C - Hot sun. A few high clouds. Still. We savoured the views of the mountains from the
hotel grounds for the last time and reflected on a week of abundant sunshine every day and flower-filled
mountainsides and meadows, with a plentiful garnish of interesting bird and other sightings, all in like-minded
good company; it made for a rewarding and enjoyable holiday for all, clients and leaders alike.
After another hearty breakfast, it was time to load up and head for Salzburg airport for our flights home or
onwards. The mini buses and the car were returned with less than 300km (200miles) on the clocks.
