The Basics of Hand-Held Gas Monitors

Gas Monitors can be purchasedwith many combinations of sensors. The monitors we offertypically measure for either a single gas such as oxygen, carbonmonoxide, hydrogen sulfide; orfour gases, including combustibles (LEL).

The purpose of these monitors is to analyze the air quality andprovide immediatefeedback. Theinformationis providedin real-time,

What is a Bump Test?

A Bump Test is performed by briefly exposing your gas monitor to a knownconcentration of a gas, to ensure that it is functioning correctly. Most manufacturers suggest performing a bump test daily or before each use. If thereadings are within an acceptable range of the actual value, it is not necessaryto make a calibration adjustment. However, it is very important to understandthat a bump test is not, nor is it intended to be, a measure of the overall accuracy of the instrument. In no case should an instrument which has failed to respond properly to a bump test be used further until the unit has been calibrated properly and the malfunction corrected.

Sound Level Meter vs. Dosimeter• A Sound Level Meter measures the intensity of sound

at a given moment. Because sound-level meters provide a real-time indication of noise levels, they aretypically used during an initial survey of an area.Once high-noise areas are identified, more thorough monitoring can beperformed with a Dosimeter.

• A Dosimeter is typically worn by an employee to measure the accumulation of their noise expo-sure over a work shift. Readingsare typically taken dozens of timesper minute and then calculatedinto an average. Dosimeters monitor all types of noise sourcesand are often used when time andmobility are an issue.

Testing Equipment Multigas Monitors

Ventis™ Multigas MonitorsThis instrument can be configured for Diffusion operation orAspirated operation using an internal sampling pump to monitor oneto four gases including oxygen, combustible gas (LEL), and a choiceof two other toxic gases. Unit features an LCD readout of all gases,peak/hold function, STEL, TWA and datalogging. The monitor’s smallsize and durable, lightweight construction make it ideally suited for awide variety of hazardous and confined space applications.Aspirated models require an Extended Range Lithium-ion Battery, while Diffusion models work with both Standard and ExtendedRange Lithium-Ion Batteries. Unit comes standard with a calibrationcup with tubing and suspender clip (Diffusion models only).

DS2 Docking Station provides automated calibration, record keeping and battery recharging, while allowing data to be relayedback to one central database via wireless/ethernet connectivity. iGasis an optional feature of DS2 Docking Station that uses a Smart Cardto automatically configure calibration gas cylinders. If you purchasethe iGas option, a Smart Card containing information about the gascylinder will be attached to the neck of each of your cylinders. When the card is connected to the card reader, the system reads the information about the gas and automatically configures the GasIn connection in the DS2 Docking Station system.

V-Cal Calibration Station is capable of calibrating, bump testing and charging these monitors. A PC is not required to operate thisstand-alone system, making the unit extremely portable and flexible.Printer automatically prints calibration and bump test reports. This product will ship separately, direct from the manufacturer.

Calibration FrequencyOSHA recommends that a Response Check (Bump Test) be conducted each day prior to the use of your monitor. The Response Check is a simpleprocedure in which no adjustments are made, unless the check shows that the instrument is not operating within specified limits. If this occurs, then

calibration by a trained person must be conducted.

Organic Vapor, Ethylene Oxide &Formaldehyde MonitorsThese compact monitors clip easily to shirt lapel, collar, or pocketand don’t interfere with employee activities Monitors collect certainorganic vapor type airborne contaminants using the scientific principle of diffusion. A sorbent pad in the base collects and holdsthe organic gases and vapors until desorbed for analysis in a laboratory. Monitors with Prepaid Analysis can be mailed to the3M-approved laboratory listed on the package for analysis. Monitorshave an 18-month shelf life. This product will ship separately, direct from the manufacturer. • 3M™ Organic Vapor Monitor 3500 uses a single charcoal

sorbent pad that will capture a wide range of organic vapors.• 3M™ Organic Vapor Monitor 3510 with Prepaid Analysis is the

same as the 3500 listed above, but also includes analysis for upto 3 compounds per monitor, pre-selected from a list of morethan 80 vapors.

• 3M™ Organic Vapor Monitor 3520 has a “double deck”charcoal sorbent pad with a higher capacity for demanding applications. Use when the capacity of the 3500 may be exceeded due to high concentrations, high humidity or complex mixtures.

• 3M™ Ethylene Oxide Monitor 3550 with Prepaid Analysisutilizes brominated carbon to collect and convert the reactiveethylene oxide to a more stable chemical derivative called 2-bromoethanol. This compound is then desorbed with methylene chloride in methanol. It meets OSHA requirement foraccuracy within +/-25% for an 8-hour samplings at 1 ppm andthe requirement for accuracy within +/-35% for 8-hour samplingsat the 0.5 ppm action limit.

• 3M™ Formaldehyde Monitor 3720 with Prepaid Analysisuses a bisulfite-impregnated filter and is analyzed by colorimetry. It can be used for 8 hour TWA sampling to meet the OSHArequirement of +/-25% accuracy at 0.5 – 5.0 ppm.

This factory-calibrated detectoroffers a two-year service life (or 18 hours ofalarm time). Unit will not deactivate after twoyears of operation; instead it will perform for as long as the battery capacity and sensor performance allow.• One button operation• No sensor or battery changes necessary• Easy bump check and built-in calibration

feature• Event recorder automatically stores

25 latest events• Built-in gas delivery adaptor for gas response tests

Altair®

Pro SingleGas Detectors

This detector uses highly accurateelectrochemical sensors to measure concentrations of carbonmonoxide, hydrogen sulfide or oxygen. Unit automatically recordsthe last 50 alarm or test events andhas active data-logging. Thisinstrument features superior dustand water protection, excellentimpact resistance, great RFI performance, and an extremely

effective alarm system. Adjustablealarm set points are offered for “low” and“high” levels on all units. In addition, the toxicgas versions also have TWA and STEL alarm

points. A distinct alarm is indicated by two brightflashing LEDs, a piercing audible alarm, a flashing notification onthe LCD, and an internal vibrating alarm, helping to ensure that noalarm condition will go by unnoticed. This product will ship separately, direct from the manufacturer.

iTrans™Fixed-PointGas MonitorsiTrans Fixed-Point GasMonitors employ anintelligent electronicsplatform to provide oneor two points of detectionfrom a single head formaximum flexibility, superior performance andlower installation costs. iTrans utilizessmart sensor technology to monitorany combination of gases for a specificenvironment. Safety features includeautomatic sensor recognition, accesscode security, and zero and cal faultprotection – all enclosed within an explosion-proof Aluminum orStainless Steel housing. Dual Gas Monitor offers on-board andremote placement.

AirAware™ Fixed Single Gas MonitorsThese monitors are a logical choice for those critical areas thatrequire continuous monitoring, but not the environmental protectionof an explosion-proof enclosure. Each unit is equipped with electrochemical sensing technology, dual alarm LEDs, a digital display providing real-time readings and push-button operation.Low/high alarm visual indicators and audio alarms alert users to gas hazards. Units offer single button calibration, alarm muting andzero air functions. • Monitors come with an AC adaptor.• Carbon Monoxide Control/Transmit unit features a 4-20 mA

output to connect the unit to any control device. Dual-alarmrelays turn on fans or warning sirens, or to shut down a process.Unit offers 12/24 VDC operation.

• Calibration Adaptor Assembly includes the adaptor, tubing and reducer.
