Nominated by Guadalupe Hernández

Educator of the Month

I’d like to nominate my twin daughters’ kindergarten teacher Mr. Rhodes who teaches at Discovery Elementary School. At the beginning of the year, I was so skeptical after having learned that they were going to have a male teacher for kindergarten. He has superseded all of my expectations as to what a great kindergarten teacher should be. My girls love Mr. Rhodes. He teaches them lots of cute and silly songs. He builds up their self-esteem. He is just so marvelous with my girls!

To submit your nominee for Educator of the Month, go to: www.northwest voice.com then click on “Post Something!” and contribute a

paragraph about why you appreciate and would like to recognize your nominee. Be sure to include the educator’s name, school, department and picture. The contest is open to

educators in the Southwest area. Entries can also be e-mailed to: [email protected]. Each month the winning entry $50 gift certificate,

compliments of GW School Supply and The Northwest Voice.

Paw Print City: Pet holiday overload

Sport fun for you andyour ‘furry’ friend!

his weekend, I finally got underway a project I’ve been think-ing about for quite some time.I’m putting together what Ihope to someday be a compre-

hensive calendar of all things pet-relat-ed in the Kern County area.

The calendar will eventually includeinformation on meetings for all thecommittees and groups in the area,

adoption datesand places, ani-m a l - c a u s ef u n d r a i s e r s ,classes for funthings to do withyour pets,s p a y / n e u t e revents, etc.

The idea is thatany pet loverwho wants toadopt/donate/getinvolved can getall necessaryinformation at

one place. The tough part about starting a proj-

ect like this is actually starting it. In mypursuit of having something on the cal-endar before reaching out to the com-munity groups I am aware of, I did alittle digging on the Internet to finddates for pet-related observances.

You know the items I’m talking about.Spay Day USA (Feb. 20) is an annualrecognized date, bringing awareness tothe importance of spaying and neuter-ing. Take Your Dog to Work Day (June26) is another observance createdspecifically for the dog loving commu-nity.

But Love Your Pet Day? Someonecame up with the idea that we needed aspecial day, in this case Feb. 20, to com-memorate loving our pets?

How about International Dog BiscuitAppreciation Day, recognized on Feb.23? I at least understand the logic ofsome crafty dog food manufacturerdeciding they needed their own day torecognize the virtues of dog food andthe army of treats that came behind its

invention, even if I never intend to plana potluck around it.

My personal favorite, in terms ofutterly useless critter-related dates, isWhat if Dogs and Cats Had OpposableThumbs Day, celebrated on March 3.After a bit of investigation, it appearsthis holiday was created for no otherpurpose than to sell electronic greetingcards. Well Cat, the “creators” of thisday, have even copyrighted it, so nomaking your big WIDACHOT Daycommemorative T-Shirts without talk-ing to them first.

The next time your sweetie tries toget out of celebrating a day you findspecial by using the “it’s just a holidaycreated by the greeting card and floristindustries to get me to spend money”excuse, just show them a few of thesedates and ask them what they plan toget you for International Dog BiscuitAppreciation Day.

Have a pet-related question or com-ment? E-mail Vicky at: [email protected] or visit:www.pawprintcitytimes.com.
