The BAJA SAE series is an event for the undergraduate engineering students organized globally by Society of Automotive Engineers. The BAJA SAE tasks the students to design, fabricate and validate a single seater four wheeled off road vehicle to take part in series of events spread over a course of three days that test the vehicle for sound engineering practices.

In India the history of BAJA can be track down to when the Delhi College Of Engineering participated in Mini BAJA in 2002. As different colleges ventured into the unchartered territory of holding a mega event of the scale, The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) and NATRIP came forward to lend helping hand through an year marked zone at its upcoming proving grounds : NATRAX situated Pithampur, Indore.

INTRODUCTION

BAJA SAE INDIA:

The Baja SAE Series will consist of seven competitions. Three competitions are held in North America under the sponsorship of SAE:

Baja SAE competitions held in Africa, Asia and South America are associated with SAE, but organized and sponsored by their local hosts:

National Automotive Testing and R&D Infrastructure Project (NATRIP), the largest and one of

the most significant initiatives in Automotive sector so far, represents a unique joining of hands

between the Government of India, a number of State Governments and Indian Automotive

Industry to create a state of the art Testing, Validation and R&D infrastructure in the

country. The Project aims at creating core global competencies in Automotive sector in India

and facilitate seamless integration of Indian Automotive industry with the world as also to

position the country prominently on the global automotive map.

EVENTS AT BAJA

ACCELERATION : 75 Points

The Acceleration Event is designed to measure each vehicle’s ability to come up to speed quickly from a standing start.

HILL CLIMB or TRACTION EVENT: 75 Points

The Hill Climb Event is designed to measure each vehicle’s ability to transmit excess (climbing) force to the ground.

MANEUVERABILITY EVENT: 75 Points

Maneuverability is designed to assess each vehicle’s handling ability over typical Baja terrain.

ENDURANCE: 400 Points

The endurance event assesses each vehicle’s ability to operate continuously and at speed over rough terrain containing obstacles in any weather conditions.

SUSPENSION AND TRACTION- 75 Points

Traction measures each vehicles transmitted force to the ground. The traction event consists of either a hill climb or weighted sled pull.
