Also graduated in this year was Samuel Phillips Prescott Fay of Concord, son of the attorney Jonathan Fay, Esq.

September 21, Wednesday: Joseph Emerson was called to be the pastor of the Third Congregational Church in Beverly, Massachusetts. He would deliver, in that locale, a series of lectures, ostensibly “on history” — although we have reason to suspect that the sort of “history” he would have offered would have been more ecclesiastical than factual, or of an apocalyptic genre. It appears that the Reverend Emerson insisted upon orthodoxy in doctrine to the point of interfering with growth in membership of the parish (in invidious contrast with the Reverend Abiel Abbot at the First Parish, whose more liberal approach would create a place for new members in his parish). In result, in 1816 the Reverend Emerson would be dismissed by his parishioners.

Mary Caroline Emerson died at the age of 4.

Leonard Withington graduated from Yale. While in college he had served as one of the five editors of the fortnightly Atheneum. His play “Rustic Love: A Dialogue, in Two Acts, Written for Exhibition at the Public Commencement of Yale College in 1814” was performed at the commencement (in this play, which had to do with hypocrisy, the virtues of a country family are almost destroyed by a con artist posing as a fashionable gentleman). During his college education, he had determined that he would become a minister, and to that end he would study with President Dwight and with his own pastor, the Reverend Dr. Codman, and also study for a few months at Andover Theological Seminary.

Charles Darwin reached his farthest point on his two-week horsieback jaunt into the interior of South America, arriving at a Pulperia north of the Rio Polanco. “I here saw what I wanted in the geology & in the morning returned to near our former sleeping place.”

The contractor Joseph Clement wrote Charles Babbage requesting to withdraw his letter of the previous July and asking to be allowed to continue to finish the Calculational Engine in his own workshop.

Symphony no.4 “Italian” by Felix Mendelssohn was performed for the initial time, in London, directed by the composer. Nicolò Paganini was among the listeners. He asked Mendelssohn to play Beethoven sonatas with him. Vincenzo Bellini was also there and the two composers met. Although the London public was growing increasingly fond of Mendelssohn, the criticisms of the symphony were mixed.
