MEETINGS

Membership in JCCV is open to anyone interested in and enthusiastic about Jaguar automobiles. There is no need to own one of these fine cars to be a member.

For information, email us at [email protected] or drop us a note in the mail. We’ll send complete details.

If you believe that a Jaguar is more than just a car, you are one of us!

JCNA Chief Judge: Brian Evers 250-743-6756 [email protected]

JOTI Chair: Terry Sturgeon 250-370-2299 [email protected]

It is the old cars that bring back memories, attract the “Lookers” and win awards at shows like JOTI! The cars in this row demonstrate this.

In the foreground, Michael Pettié’s XK140 Fixed Head Coupe, in a stunning metallic red, won, by a significant margin, the participants’ vote for “Best Sports Car” in the Enthusiasts’ Division.

The pastel green XK120 DHC tied with Pete Rollosson’s claret XK150 for 1st place in Class D1 (early sports cars) in the judged Driven Division.

The beautiful, silver, early XK120, Open Two Seater, in Enthusiasts’ Division, attracted a great many “Lookers”, as it always does.

The white 1968 340 saloon, owned by Gordon and Elaine Jackson from Vancouver, won the participants’ vote for “Best Saloon” in the Enthusiasts’ Division. On Sunday, it won the Slalom competition for Classic Saloons. Photo by Doug McLean

As I write this, it is the afternoon of July 25th, so it'll be about JOTI; which is over, leaving me with mixed feel-ings. Herewith are some thoughts, entirely personal, since this is my space to fill as I will.

First, next year the food will be sit-down, or we'll get really bad caterers, or I won't go. Three really good buffet din-ners in a row is too much for my tartan blood. (Buffet: A place where a Scot gets his money's worth by eating too much.) I gained one kilo over the weekend.

Secondly, thanks again to everyone who volunteered. Terry said it, I said it, but here it is again. Thanks. Espe-cially to Merritt, Graham, Jim, and Terry. And spouses. And, of course, to everyone who entered. And to the field crew, especially the three white finger guys who helped do the layout. And the photogs. Great pix.

Third, I enjoyed it; great people, great cars, a good time.

Changes for next year:

The entry list will be alpha by surname, or the enve-lopes will be sorted that way. Having both envelopes and list by number didn't work all that well, although we had enough workers so it didn't really slow things down.

We have to tell everyone to look in their envelopes or hand out the booklets separately. People couldn't find the slalom but the directions in the booklet (which was in the envelope) were perfect.

There should be a cell phone number in the registra-tion info, with instructions to entrants to call if they can't make it. It's not fair that the registration crew should have to wait around for people who aren't com-ing.

Other stuff, which will no doubt come up at the post mortem in August.

And speaking of that, a couple of people asked me why we didn't have a meeting in July. The executive felt (and I more than anyone) that after three days of Jaguar we'd be ready for a rest. And you know what? I was right, at least about me. Much as I like all of you, just about the last thing I need at the moment is another two hours of you.

Bring your suggestions to meetings. But remember, the moment you say, "Next year we should," I'm going to say, "Tim, get that guy's name."

WORDS FROM THE PRESIDENT

Ian Cameron

Friday the 13th, in August, lived up to its reputation when, on that date, my computer ceased to function. My daugh-ter, a computer nerd, thought that she knew what the problem was but she was wrong and the beast had to go to the shop. The next day we got the diagnosis; my moth-erboard had died and I had to get a new computer. Fortu-nately my hard drive was intact and its data could be transferred to a new beast.

Of course, I was told that I had to have the latest technol-ogy and, really, I should update all my software, printers, etc.! I was also told that I was lucky and that, in future, I must have proper “backup”. This was all very traumatic because, at heart, I am a Luddite. (That’s why I drive a 56 year old car). And so it was that I had to wait for the new equipment to be put together and for old data (and soft-ware) to be transferred before I could start to figure out how to make it all work and, ultimately, get back to finish-ing the August issue of the Growler.

Now, this issue is mostly about JOTI and, therefore, pic-tures. I have used only a small fraction of the photos available to me. I have received photos from several peo-ple but Doug McLean and Dick Auchinleck were the offi-cial photographers and took most of the photos of the JOTI events and they did an excellent job. They have posted 392 photographs to Doug's Apple website, http://gallery.me.com/dcmcl/101115 . For those who would like to look through these photos and download some copies, this website is very easy to use with instructions that are clear and simple. If anyone wants copies of other pictures in the Growler (e.g. the Slalom photos), send an e-mail to me describing the photo(s) wanted and I will “reply” with attachments.

The cover for this issue departs from past practice in that I have chosen a “scene” that I think portrays a sense of the activity on the show field; rather than a picture of one car alone that belongs to a member. I am just “trying out” a change of pace.

To report on JOTI I have given you five pages (5, 6, 7, 9 & 11) of pictures with very little text, the exception being Bennie Chisholm’s entertaining story of the Sunday Prowl and luncheon (page 11).

On pages 13, 14 & 15, we have done our usual reports on the Coffee Klatches, Brits on the Beach, Auctions and the August Prowl to the Mill Bay show.

In JCCV Bits & Bytes (page 17), we have some unusual items. I hope that some of our members can help Barb Driver and Gary Broughton, in Geelong. I will bring some of my old issues of Sports Car Market for Barb.

I am sorry that I have been so very late in getting this is-sue of the Growler out to you. August has been a very busy month for me (and for most of you too), but here it is now, so enjoy!

JOTI - THE PROWL & LUNCHEON by Bennie Chisholm, photos by Dick Auchinleck & Mike Skene

On Sunday morning, the sun smiled on Slalomites roaring around orange pylons on a parking lot near Keating-X-Road. It also smiled on Prowlers chit-chatting on a parking lot near The Comfort Hotel.

Lois and Phil Smith, prowl and lunch organizers, distributed route directions then led a pride of Jags to the scenic Gorge Waterway. Several minutes later, the elegant cars passed Victoria General Hos-pital on busy Helmcken Road, Camosun College on rural Interurban Road, and Prospect Lake on twisty Goward Road. On Munns Road they climbed to Mount Work, the highest point on the Saanich Penin-sula. Drivers honked their horns and held their breaths as they crawled over a blind stretch on Humpback Road and obeyed the nerve-wracking sign——Two Lane Traffic, One Lane Road——on Lombard Road; no collisions occurred. After passing My-Chosen Cafe in Metchosin and Town Centre in Langford, they arrived at the designated Jag parking area at the Royal Colwood Golf Club.

Inside the club house, while sipping and eating, Prowlers and Slalomites exchanged tall tales. The lunch was delicious, thanks to Claire Barcelos, Catering Coordinator, and Kristine Rogers, Food and Beverage Manager. Ian Cameron presented priceless door prizes; Dick and Linda Auchinleck, receivers of the RCGC round of golf for two with cart, are expected to win the next Pro-Am Golf Tournament.

Plaques were awarded to Slalom winners. Here are their names and race times: CLASSIC SALOONS: Gordon Jackson 53.83; Merritt Chisholm 54.13. CLASSIC SPORTS: Terry Sturgeon 43.71; Carolyn Arnquist 46.51; Tom Morris 47.31. MODERN SALOONS: Clive Townley 46.16; Julie Bailey 46.64; Nick Vickers 50.60. MODERN SPORTS: John Braybrooks 46.44; Shelley Thackray 48.87; Guy Bradick 49.52. Jaguar watch—MAXIMO TROPHY (Fastest Time of the Day): John Braybrooks 99.71%.

All in all, it was a wonderful closing for a wonderful weekend.

The morning greeted us with sunshine which lasted throughout the day. Some of us met at Simon’s & Cheryl's to meet a 9 am departure for Ladysmith. I left my Jag be-hind. I could not resist the offer of a ride in Marke’s & Carol's RR.

The success of the day can be measured by the number of cars participating. The count exceeded 200. It had to be a record. The beach was crowded with sunbathers,

children and swimmers.

The food concession was on overload. The variety of cars & mo-torcycles provided astonishment and many comments from the spectators. Where did all the Rolls come from? A showstopper was a beautiful Bent-ley convertible. Tri-umphs, MGs, Austins, Sunbeams, Hillmans, to name a few, all were there. What about Jaguars? The

marque was well represented by E-Types, XJ’s, XJS’s and Steve K’s 420G, which performed well, following misad-venture at the Van Dusen ABFM.

When leaving from a final pit

stop, Simon & I saw what looked like a genuine Swallow sidecar. Knowing some of the motor-ing treasures hidden on the Island, we wondered if it is genuine.

Some silly ass was caught sporting a monocle. Well, it was Brits on the Beach!

JULY 18 - BRITS ON THE BEACH by John Fitzgeorge-Parker

The morning of July 11th was a bright, sunny beginning to a wonderful drive to Turkey Head. We had not been there for over a year to meet with

our fellow JCCV members. 16 beautiful Jaguars and two other “foreign” vehicles graced the parking lot of Turkey Head. We were pleased to see that 30 club members were there for cof-fee, socializing and oohing and aahing over the various cars. Even a few books were traded.

Some of the members with their binoculars even sighted the resident grey whale in the water. A photographer, Sharon Tiffin, from the Oak Bay News was

there taking pictures and enjoying Simon’s E-Type. We should have had some great coverage for JOTI from her on July 24th. What a glorious way to spend a Sunday morn-ing, sitting en-joying the sun-shine, blue skies and great company.

page 14

It was another successful Coffee Klatch meet-ing despite the rather overcast and cool morning. Some 30 club members and 20 cars arrived to participate in a casual get to-gether, swapping

magazines, books and automobile advice. One of our un-derdressed male members was seen wearing a colorful blanket and Ken Lambert looked most patriotic wearing a British flag which, as the photos will attest, was actually the correct way up.

John Gordon as usual arrived with his recent show winning Jaguar XK120, Dick Auchinleck brought out his delightful Old English White MGA which he has owned for thirty years. Dick restored this car several years ago and

says it is ready to be restored again. I disagree with his thinking as the car still looks like an award winner and shows very well.

Jeremy Why showed up with his powder blue TR3A which was having its first

outing since a comprehensive cosmetic restoration over the past 12 months, including a conversion to wire wheels. The get together lasted well into the lunch time.

I encourage all our members to include this monthly event in your calendar as it gives one a great opportunity to get to know your fellow members and to swap Jaguar information and other gossip.

About 15 Jags assembled at the Shell Station at the base of the Mala-hat Drive for our convoy up to the Cowichan Valley Car Picnic. We were met at the gate by several club members who di-

rected us onto the field. Despite the rain of the previous day, it turned out to be a warm, sunny day and just perfect for picnic lunches.

Everyone set up their chairs, umbrellas and tables for a relaxing afternoon of

leisure. There was plenty to do, however, with car boot sales, local stores and many different types of cars on the field to look at. Friends from other car clubs mingled and renewed acquaint-ances. Graham How won a special prize for the "classiest" dogs - his English cocker span-iels. Jim Bateman won the Best in Show with his beautiful, black XK140.

A very pleasant day was had by all. We extend our thanks to Barbara

Driver, Brian Evers and Geoff Moyes for organising this show and prowl; a perfect summer occasion!

JCCV BITS & BYTES “PEACHES” PICTURES

In mid July, just after our July issue was posted, Geoff Moyse sent the following message, with 33 pictures, to our Club’s e-mail address:

“I received the at-tached photos of a pristine, restored 1.5 litre Jaguar and thought I should for-ward them to you to see if anyone in our club might have an interest in this lovely car (other than me!). Asking price is $48,000 US”.

I haven’t discussed this with Geoff and don’t know if the car is still available. I am willing to pass on the photos but suggest that, if anyone is interested, they contact Geoff. [email protected] John G

OLD CAR MAGAZINES.

I recently met a lady who has an eighteen year old son with severe autism. His only interest is in cars and on his bad days the only way she can cope with him is to give him a pile of car magazines; it doesn't matter how old they are or what kind of cars. So rather than put your old

magazines in the garbage if you could occasionally bring them to the monthly meetings I will deliver them to her. I have already taken her a few and she was really grateful.

LETTER FROM “DOWN UNDER”

I am in Geelong, Victoria, Australia and I receive the Growler which is a great magazine. Even though I cannot enjoy the trips you guys do I enjoy reading about them and seeing the photos.

I have an 1985 XJSC, trim date May, which is the oldest cab on the roads in Australia and probably in the South-ern Hemisphere, given the other countries in the area to which Jaguar exported. My wife has an X-Type, 2001, 3 litre, with which she is very happy and, previously, I also had a 1989 XJ40 which I sold recently. I am a member of the Jag Car Club of Victoria (Aust.) – Geelong Regis-ter. The Geelong Register has only around 20-25 mem-bers with about half that number regular attendees at our runs; quite a bit different to your club.

I am wondering; the rubbers around my rear quarter win-dows are starting to perish. I have tried to buy replace-ments in Australia with no result. Would it be possible for me to have an advertisement put in the Growler to see if anyone over there has some?

Kind Regards, Gary Broughton, [email protected]
