Chairman’s Message

To all our valued ASA Members,

On behalf of your Board Of Directors, I am privileged to welcome you to the latest issue of the new ASA Magazine.

Vice Chairman and Financial Officer Alan Gilmour has been a very busy boy of late, working long hours interviewing, writing and editing, so that the ASA

could bring you an e-mag that is second to none. It is packed full of interesting stories about and discussions with some of the ASA Song Contest 2011

Winners, along with a complete list of the Top Ten in every genre. ASA Commendation Certificates issued for 2011 have been catalogued also.

All in all, it makes for a great read and brings us up-to-date with our 2011 winning recipients.

We certainly owe Alan a big thank you for his superlative efforts, in ensuring our new Magazine is once again up and running.

Don’t forget to check out the ASA Songwriting Contest 2012. It promises to be huge this year, with great prizes for every genre. It closes at the end of May, so hurry and get those entries in.

Remember, if you are a Songwriter you should belong to the ASA, as well as APRA. Happy reading, and see you at the Wax Lyricals.

Songwriters Awards Night Photo: The Lamplights were the winners of the PPCA Award for the best performance at the 2011 National Songwriters Awards night. The boys are pictured here with singer Dinah Lee and PPCA Director Lindy Morrison.

Each year, the Phonographic Performance Company of Australia

Limited (PPCA) provides a prize of $400 for the artist or artists who provide the best live performance at the National Songwriters Awards night.

The PPCA is a not-for-profit organisation that provides licenses to Australian businesses to play recorded music in

public.

The net fees are distributed to record labels and registered Australian artists who create the recordings so that they can continue to make music for us all to

enjoy. At the 2011 National Songwriting

Awards night, the PPCA selected The Lamplights as the winning artist.

The Lamplights are huge fun. To see

them perform live is to experience an energetic and fun loving show where the band enjoys the performance just as much as the audience. The Lamplights

are aware that when they are having a good time on stage the audience follows. The Lamplights are Ryan Gittoes

(vocals), Jason McGregor (guitar), Ashley Perrow (acoustic and lap steel guitar), Mattie Barker (vocals, bass and

harmonica) and Mick Easterman (drums). The boys come from the Queensland

Gold Coast where they formed the band in late 2009. They pride themselves in bringing warmth to audiences and

delivering moving and memorable live performances with consummate musicianship.

The Lamplights deliver a wide range of genres, from acoustic folk pop to childrens’ songs. Their Hopping Mouse

mascot keeps the kids (and adults) engaged, particularly when performing their award winning song The Hopping

Mouse. In 2010 The Lamplights released their first CD appropriately titled The

Lamplights. The Lamplights were the 2011 winners

of the Songs For Children Category and Co-Winners of the Folk/Acoustic Category.

We’ll have a full interview with The Lamplights in an upcoming edition of The Australian Songwriter. Photos (Top): The Lamplights perform their award winning songs Practice (joint winner of the 2011 Folk/Acoustic Category) and The Hopping Mouse (winner of the 2011 Songs For Children Category).

Craig Morrison: Winner of the 2011 Country Category

Photo: Craig Morrison performing his award winning song Hot Kinda Love at the 2011 National Songwriting Awards Night.

Craig Morrison won the 2011 Country Category with his song Hot Kinda Love.

Craig was a Toyota Star Maker finalist in 2010 and was chosen as Male Artist of the

Year at the 2012 Central Coast Country Music Festival. He has had two successful single releases

from his self titled album: Fences, which reached the Top 5 on the Australian Country Tracks chart earlier this year with the video peaking at No. 23 on CMC, and of course

the ASA award winning Hot Kinda Love. He is the son of renowned Australian artist

Lucky Starr, widely regarded as a founding member of Australian Pop music and the first to record I’ve Been Everywhere and make it a No. 1 hit on the Australian charts.

ASA: Would you please let us know how you came to write Hot Kinda Love and what

the inspiration for you was? Craig: I started the song a long time ago, and left it in a lyric book and dug it out when preparing my new album. It seemed to be exactly what I needed to kick off the

project. I needed something punchy and bold - and what a great honky tonk feel Mark Moffatt pulled for it. ASA: How is the new album going in terms of sales and placings?

Craig: Fantastic, we just signed a distribution deal with MGM for Australia and NZ, and a distribution deal with GMV Nashville for the USA and Canada. I have also just

landed a publishing deal with Walkerbout Music Group Nashville. ASA: How was it to have your Dad onstage for your Country award? How much have you learned from him musically over the years?

Craig: It was awesome to have my Dad there for such a great achievement. I learned everything from my father over the years, he was my mentor.

ASA: How did you graduate to Country music over all other genres?

Craig: My initial introduction to music was actually Country, and I spent a lot of summers working Tamworth with my father when I was a kid, when the Longyard was in the middle of paddock believe it or not.

Page 7: The Australian Songwriter · Welcome ASA members to the May 2012 edition of The Australian Songwriter. This month we feature interviews with some of the category winners from the

My father introduced me to the rock ’n’ roll

tunes of Elvis and many others, and then I found myself working with pop rock music in my early twenties.

But I think Country music was always in my blood. I feel a resonance with this genre, and often find myself dabbling in writing country songs.

The first song I ever learnt was a country song. I love music that describes your life, makes you

think, makes you smile… My Country album release ‘Heaven Knows’ under the guise of Craig Morrison Little

Cowboys was well-received by the industry and this only further cemented my determination to carve a niche in the genre. The next natural

step, was to go to the country music capital of the world to write and record my new self-titled album.

ASA: Where are you hoping that music will take you?

Craig: I hope this new album allows me to continue this wonderful music journey - and hopefully bring some #1 radio singles and

songwriting success, not only in Australia but also the US.

Craig’s first US single Fences was released in April ahead of the 1st May release of his self

titled album that also features the track Hot Kinda Love.

Aussie producer Mark Moffatt produced the album in Nashville after Craig relocated there in

2011. The album will be released on all digital platforms by GMV Nashville.

Dani Karis: Winner of the 2011 Ballad Category

Photo: Dani Karis at the 2011 National Songwriting Awards

Dani Karis is the winner of the

2011 Ballad Category with her song My Fire.

We asked Dani a few questions

about her music:

ASA: Can you tell us the story behind your winning song My Fire and how you came to

write it?

Dani: I had just bought a new amp and was sitting in front of

it with my guitar trying out the sound and something about the rhythm I was strumming brought back an old memory.

Because the story was real and already complete in itself, the song flowed easily. The song is about those moments

when I have realised that a cherished male friend has shifted without my

realising into something else.

Audiences who have heard this song performed have let me know that this is a

situation that many of them have experienced. It's tricky

and a little bit sad when a great, happy dynamic between two people gets thrown. I

have been on both sides of this situation which is why I think I was able to write this song. ASA: You had two other songs shortlisted in the 2011 Australian

Songwriting Contest. Can you tell us a little about them as well? Dani: Before The Bells was shortlisted in the Folk category. This is a big, heavy song. It remembers that we all come from tribes that danced in circles at one time.

It is recognition of a story that has been repeated thousands of times as 'civilization' swept traditional cultures and pagan beliefs away in its progression across the globe. Here in Australia it's as recent as 'the stolen generation', in other parts of the world

the story is more ancient. When I first wrote this song I 'camouflaged' the story - I have what I think is a common 'shyness' among many colonial Australians about commenting on the

Aboriginal experience and because it's really a song about dominating religious

Page 9: The Australian Songwriter · Welcome ASA members to the May 2012 edition of The Australian Songwriter. This month we feature interviews with some of the category winners from the

cultures. I thought it might alienate audiences. However, when I went into a studio to record it

the producer kept pushing to find out what it was really about. He sent me away to re-write it with all its layers of meaning exposed. I'm glad he did this. The song is

better for being honest. Sword, Crown and Creed was shortlisted in the Spiritual category. It's an Easter song and as

soon as I say that the Easter images set into the lyrics become clear to people.

At the same time, it's a personal story about finding new strength by dropping all my defenses and certainties. I left the chorus without words because I love drifting with the

melody and I want listeners to have some empty space in which to wonder about the verses. I realise that only some of the people

who love music and listen to songs are looking for layers of meaning and imagery in the lyrics, but that's my favourite part of songwriting.

ASA: The songs are featured on your new CD Sword Crown and Creed which you describe as bristling with passion and soul. What are the tracks that best define the passion and soul of the album?

Dani: Simple Sum probably does it best. Simple Sum is Track 1 of my debut album, Sword Crown and Creed. It is a defiant and joyous anthem that explores my belief that we are simply the sum of our experiences. We can’t change the past - it has already shaped us. But, once we realise this we can become more deliberate

about what we allow into the equation. We are what we are - the simple sum.

ASA: Where are you hoping that your music will take you?

Dani: My music has already taken me to places I might not have otherwise gone. I

have found that I love performing and the songs are really my gateway to this. I don't consider myself a fabulous musician, but I can write songs that fabulous musicians are happy to join me on. I love the interaction on-stage and the buzz afterwards.

In the last twelve months I have performed more than any time in the past, one of the highlights of course being the ASA Awards Night and just recently our band from the local 'Open Mike' night found itself on the ABC 702 'Exhumed' stage. Tony Wilson who played at the ASA Awards with me also joined me for spots at Winter Magic and

The Illawarra Folk Festival and its Green Music Train. I love the festivals because our families can be there. We spend the day enjoying other muso's work, and then get a turn on-stage ourselves. Perfect.

My husband keeps threatening to buy me a Combi van for my 'tour'. I don't really know how to make that work so local gigs might have to satisfy. I would be very happy to see any one of my songs picked up and taken to a bigger audience by someone who does know how it's done.

Page 10: The Australian Songwriter · Welcome ASA members to the May 2012 edition of The Australian Songwriter. This month we feature interviews with some of the category winners from the

Christopher Pye: Winner of the 2011 Australia Category

Christopher Pye is the winner of the 2011 Australia Category

with his song Real People. Christopher displays a very smooth and attractive musical

style. In 2010 his song Jacaranda Falls placed second in the Australia Category.

We asked Christopher a few questions about his music and his songwriting.

ASA: Firstly Christopher, can you give us a bit of background

information about yourself? Where you have been, how you ended up in Australia and what you have been doing in the

intervening years. Christopher: I was born in the U.K, but my parents, who had

been educators most of their lives, sold everything and bought a small sailboat when I

was 11 and my sister 12. We spend 7 years traveling the Mediterranean, across the Atlantic and around the

Caribbean, before I left family and boat in the Virgin Islands

at age 17 to spend two and a half years in New York City, studying music and

theatre. I moved to London when I was 20 and worked as an actor for a few years, playing music in bands at the same time. In my late twenties I developed a passion for

youth work and began retraining. I moved to Australia in 1998, where most of my family had ended up in Queensland and I set up my own small business, using music and drama as tools for engagement with marginalised youth, all the while maintaining my own songwriting, but with less focus on performing. Today, at the

ripe age of 45, I work as a counselor and facilitator of youth projects with a large charitable organisation in Brisbane.

ASA: Your 2012 Award winning song Real People is such a Queensland themed song. Can you give us some background on the story and how you came to write the song?

Page 11: The Australian Songwriter · Welcome ASA members to the May 2012 edition of The Australian Songwriter. This month we feature interviews with some of the category winners from the

Christopher: Between 1998 and 2001 I spent a lot of time traveling

around my new State of Queensland, working for various organisations and authorities in my capacity of youth arts practitioner.

I was privileged to see real Australia in all its forms. I was struck by the spirit of hope that still dominated for so many young

people in the mining belt of Queensland, where “fly-in-fly-out” workers made up a significant

portion of the population and towns were lacking essential community infrastructure, particularly for young people. The

plight of young people in towns like Dysart and Moranbah tugged at me and I just had to write about them.

ASA: How has winning the Australia Category affected you and your songwriting?

Christopher: More than anything, winning an ASA award has been a huge validation. As a lone artist,

locked away in my little bedroom studio, I can feel quite isolated and after a few rejections from

publishers or what have you, I am prone to self-doubt. I've always believed that I had something to offer, particularly as a lyricist.

When affirmations like this come along, they offer a clear indication that there are people out there

who agree. That's enormous for me.

ASA: Where to now for Chris Pye's career? Do you have anything special on your musical and songwriting horizons? Christopher: I am still plugging away at raising my profile as a songwriter and

trying to get my work into the right hands. I have a couple of fledgling opportunities in the offing this year, but too early to talk about them. Juggling my musical pursuits with my 'day job' is an intricate balancing act, but it's not in my DNA to ever stop

telling musical stories that I hope will touch people in some way. Photos (above): Christopher Pye at the 2011 National Songwriting Awards with Kylie Kain and Dani Karis (top), and during rehearsals (middle and below).

Steve Lymburn and Carly Van: Winners of the 2011 Rock/Indie

Category Photo: Steve Lymburn and Carly Van perform at the 2011 National Songwriting Awards

Steve Lymburn and Carly Van are the winners of the 2011 Rock/Indie Category with their song Beautiful. They also won the same category in 2010 with their song Simple Little Reason.

We spoke to Steve about their music:

ASA: How did you get together as songwriters? Steve: We got together as a songwriting team after I was asked to mix and master an album Carly had done with someone else. I recognised the wonderful voice Carly

had and approached her to up the ante so to speak. Carly was a rough diamond that needed smoothing in terms of her writing. ASA: Who writes the words and who writes the music or is it a collaborative effort?

Steve: I write and compose all off the music. We collaborate on the lyrics and Carly would contribute 30% of the melody. On some of the new songs for the

second album, Carly has written all the lyrics which is something I encourage.

ASA: You have now had back-to-back wins in 2010 and 2011 in the Australian Songwriting Contest. What do you think is the secret of your success?

Steve: With songwriting my approach has been 1: Belief in your idea. 2: No attachment to that belief when a better way is shown either from within yourself or

from someone else. 3: Being a student of the history of the craft of songwriting. 4: Always learning and evolving past the point you are at in any given moment. ASA: Do you perform together or do you have solo acts?

Steve: We perform together as a duo and with a complete band as is required

Page 13: The Australian Songwriter · Welcome ASA members to the May 2012 edition of The Australian Songwriter. This month we feature interviews with some of the category winners from the

ASA: Where are you hoping that your music will take you now?

Steve: We are working towards making Carly the complete artist that can sustain a lengthy career. Also we are writing songs to place in the medium of film, television and advertising. And above all have fun and joy doing it so regardless of outcome we are successful in our hearts.
