The Sunshine Coast Jersey Cattle Club once again held a youth camp during the October school break. Ray and Catherine Devere of River Ridge Jerseys kindly opened their property to the very enthusiastic 23 kids.

The youth camp is held in conjunction with the clubs annual calf day. There was 44 calves entered in this years show. The youth were divided into 3 groups each under the guidance of a mentor. The 44 calves were divided among the 3 groups and over the next 2 days the youth had to teach them to parade, clip and feed the calves ready for judging in the calf day. None of the calves were clipped previous to the youth camp. Jeremy Josefski did an excellent job with his clipping presentation and the youth couldn’t wait to

get into it. They had 36 hrs, 10 set of clippers , 8 clipping frames 44 calves.

It was a clipping beehive. The youth also competed in a team against team clipping and parading youth challenge. As the sun set in the evenings the fun continued with the youth taking part in their own rendition of MINUTE TO WIN IT !

The youth did an excellent job in the short amount of time they had to learn . The calves were presented extremely well for the calf day as the owners of the calves sat back and watched their once untrained and hairy calves parade around. A special thanks to everyone involved in making the camp a great success once again.

I enjoy sitting down to write a Christmas message as it gives me the opportunity to perform what is effectively a half yearly review of the progress made by the Australian Jersey Industry.

I look around me and I am literally blown away by the opportunities our Jersey is presenting to us at the moment.

We have just seen the culmination of the most signifi cant export order ever for Jerseys in this country, with the promise of more to come. There is enormous demand

stake-holders around the world because it will broaden our currently severely curtailed genetic horizon so signifi cantly.

It is important that we follow our breeding vision or goal as individuals. Our individual opinion creates a communal diversity that, in turn, brands the Profi table Australian Jersey as a cow that is now demanded by dairy farmers. That demand is snowballing. (Jersey Australia has seen a 5% growth in Annual Membership just six months into the year)

On behalf of the Jersey Australia Board of Management, I would like to wish everybody involved with our wonderful Jersey Breed all the very, very best wishes for the Christmas season and for the year 2011. Keep breeding those cows, our brand is in demand.

Kind RegardsTrevor SaundersPresident - Jersey Australia Inc.

for our Jersey milking cows, rising two year old heifers and younger stock domestically. The commercial prices being paid for Jerseys is consistently equal to and in some cases beating the commercial prices being paid for other breeds of cows. This suggests a signifi cant cultural change in the mindset of milk-harvesters with regard to the value that they place on our highly profi table cow and we must continue to reinforce that mind-set.

The science of Genomics has blossomed in front of us this past 6 months with a huge Dairy Australia and Government funded project underway to genomically test literally thousands of our Jersey cows to give us an industry accepted reliable Genomic ABV. The opportunities that this potentially presents to our breed when the project is concluded in the not too distant future are enormous. I am confi dent that Australian Jersey breeders will benefi t from this technology as much, if not more, than other

THE WORLD RENOWNED FERNLEAFS The foundation cow Ecker Fernleaf purchased from a Gippsland stud in 1945 never classifi ed, with a top milk of 7,684 lbs in 275 days. She was bred from the then famous Selsey stud and only produced one heifer calf. Her great grand-daughter, Bushlea Fernleaf 7 HC 84 produced 4 daughters sired by 4 different bulls. The family multiplied quite rapidly from these 4 cows. A great grand-daughter of Fernleaf 7, Bushlea Fernleaf 106 Ex, 9, lactation AV PI 120, born 21-7-79 had the biggest individual infl uence on the stud’s history. Closely followed by her grand-daughter, Bushlea Fernleaf 161 Ex 92 who bred 8 90 point daughters, her grand-daughter Bushlea Brook Fernleaf Ex 92 continued this prepotency into the next century. “106” sired by Katandra Royal Jingo (4 times Most Successful Sire Melbourne Royal), Dam Bushlea Fernleaf 76 HC+ sired by Babrooten Major Dreamer, a bull bred from New Zealand’s best Big Hollow and Glenmore lines.

The introduction of a Nine Top Brass took this family to a new level. We purchased 6 straws and fl ushed our best 6 cows, all Fernleafs. ET technology was a new tool for breed development. Fortunately for us Fernleaf 106 was a prolifi c embryo producer. We registered 52 progeny, 18 males and 34 females which included 8 daughters of Brass. At the 1992 Melbourne Royal, Bushlea Brass Fernleaf 2 Ex 93 was made Champion. Bushlea Brass Fernleaf 11 Ex 90, 1st 2 yrs in milk and was made junior champion. Brass Fernleaf daughters stood 2,3 and 5 in the 3 year old class. This triggered a tremendous era for the stud with 4 other Fernleafs winning 5 championships in the following 6 years. Then B Jude Fernleaf 6 Ex 92, B Brook Fernleaf Ex 92, B Etta Fernleaf 7 Ex 90 and B Jace Fernleaf Ex 92 winning in 2001, ‘02, ‘03 and ‘06. A special mention for Bushlea Brass Fernleaf 10 Ex 91, twice over 7,000 ltrs won Champion Melbourne ’95 Sydney ’97 Res/IDW ’97. A near perfect confi rmation cow. Another to have great success was Bushlea Lester Fernleaf 36 Ex 92, IDW 1997, 1st 2 yrs in milk Jnr Champion 1st cow & daughter, with Bushlea Brass Fernleaf 22 Ex 93 Snr Champion Melbourne 1994 and ’96 . IDW 1998 Res Intermediate Champion 1st 4 yrs in milk World Conference Show Sydney 1999. Top price animal at our all Fernleaf Sale 2000.

March 7 1995 was the date of our 50 years of Breeding Sale. To mark this milestone all females selling were sired by Lester. Tim Abbott USA was guest pedigree reader. He also judged our pre-sale show - 4 classes, 4 cows per class, all Fernleafs. The sale females were also paraded and judged. Top price at $6,000 and 2nd top at $5,800 were daughters of B Brass Fernleaf 2 & 10.

14 March 2000 we held our 21st annual On Farm Sale. History was created when all 27 females selling were Fernleafs, a feat never equalled in Australia of any breed before. 26 of the 27 lots were bred up from Bushlea Fernleaf 106 Ex. The one that was not B Herm Fernleaf 10 went on to classify Ex 92 and win 2nd 6 yrs in milk and

1st Best Vessel IDW 2002. The best average from the 21 sales was achieved $2,450.

In 2003 Holstein International based in USA produced a special on The Jersey and Australia Brown Swiss breeds. We were interviewed for a story in this publication. Quote (1). “Embryos from Australia’s famous Fernleaf family have been exported to both the US and Canada. North America has for many years been the export hub for Jersey genetics and now this family is one of the fi rst to reverse the trend.”

Quote (2). “The arrival of 36 embryos from the Fernleaf family at Tim Abbot’s, Vermont USA marked the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the Fernleaf family. Every time I went to Australia over the past 10 years or so the Fernleafs have dominated explains Abbot. They are just a unique blend of type and production. The fi rst time I saw them they had a great group of Top Brass daughters, the best T.B. daughters I had seen anywhere. The blend of the tall dairy Top Brass line with the wide chest, powerful front end of the family was magical.” End quote!!

Fernleafs can now be found in New Zealand, Canada, USA, South Africa and Germany.

In October this year I had the privilege of being at the largest dairy show in the world. 2,700 head of dairy cattle, 377 Jerseys at World Dairy Expo Madison USA.And to see Pyramid Hallmark Fernleaf Daisy Ex 91 being paraded was a very fulfi lling experience. She being a grand-daughter of B Jude Fernleaf 4 Ex 90.

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS ON DAIRY DOOR

Australian dairy farmers and advisers will have two fabulous opportunities early next year to attend conferences focussing on dairy breeding: Herd 11, which is being held in March, and the Applied Genomics for Sustainable Livestock Industries Conference in May.

Michelle Axford from the Australian Dairy Herd Improvement Scheme (ADHIS) said Herd ’11 will focus on the three big issues: fertility, genetics and data.

“Herd ’11 will provide the latest news and a good look at the future so make sure you are there if you want to be ‘in the know’. It’s also a great networking opportunity as it’s well-attended by the dairy breeding industry,” said Mrs Axford.

“Once again ADHIS has teamed up with the National Herd Improvement Association and Holstein Australia to create a program that’s relevant and exciting, so put Herd ’11 in your diary.”

The genomics conference has a full day (Thursday 5 May) dedicated to answering breeders’ questions about getting the most out of this exciting and rapidly developing technology.

“We are encouraging dairy farmers from across the country to come to this day. It promises to take a very practical look at the applications of genomics for animal industries. Come along prepared to test your ideas for using genomics on farm, with leading genomics scientists and breeders.”

International speakers from North America, Europe and New Zealand will join their Australian counterparts for three days of exciting presentations and hearty discussion about the on-farm applications of genomics.

The Dairy, Beef and Sheep Co-operative Research Centres have joined forces to bring this conference to you with the support from the Sir Mark Oliphant Conference Series.

DIARY DATESHerd ’11: 30, 31 March 2011, Ballarat, Vic.Applied Genomics for Sustainable Livestock Industries Conference: 2-5 May 2011, Melbourne.

For more information contact Michelle Axford at ADHIS Phone (03) 8621-4240 or email [email protected].
