Auckland Chatter By Nicola Kinzett

End of June already, start of international season for some lucky and skilled club members, the start of the OY season for the rest of us.

Firstly commiserations to Reuben Wilson who fell at the Four Seasons OY event breaking his collar-bone. He has assured us that it doesn't hurt now and that he won't be orienteering for quite a while but the doctors say that he can orienteer before he does other sports like riding his bike and soccer. Also on the club injured list is Jill Mains w i t h a badly bruised and swollen knee after taking a spectacular tumble while competing on the first day of the New Zealand mountain bike orienteering champs. We wish you both speedy recoveries.

Thanks also to the CM organisers of the mountain biking event - you did a great job despite the difficult lead-up with Rob C being out of action. The weather even came to the party and was magnificent at race time contrary to the threatening forcasts.

Next congratulations to Imogen Scott on being awarded a scholarship to the international college here in Auckland - lots of serious and rewarding study ahead.

Happy 40th Birthday to Pete Swanson. He seems to have celebrated it in style over the last month -firstly with a close encounter of the painful kind with the flora of West Auckland and secondly with a win in the veteran's section of the NZ mountain bike champs without the benefit of cycling shoes.

Unfortunately (or not) none of the early (female) finishers had any size 10.5 shoes to lend him. We hear that Tim Renton was 73rd at the World University O Champs. Look forward to following his races at JWOC 4th to 11th July and O-Ringen 18th to 23rd July. We will also be following Jeff Greenwood, Alison Comer, Heather & Tom Clendon, John & Rae Powell and Jill Brewis over at the World Masters competition 3rd to 10th July. All the best everyone. Back to Queens Birthday. Congratulations to: M35A Dave Crofts 2nd M40A Pete Swanson 1st M21AS Rudy Hlawatsch 2nd M60A Mike Ashmore 1st M60A Vee Smirnov 3rd M40AS Norm Jager 1st M40AS Nicholas Oram 2nd M40AS Clive Bolt 3rd M65A Terry Nuthalll 2nd M14A Toby Scott 1st M50B David Scott 2nd W40A Nicola Kinzett 3rd W50A Joanna Stewart 2nd W60A Rae Powell 2nd W40AS Chris Jager 1st W65A Heather Clendon 1st W40B Bronwyn Holcombe W12A Lydia Scott 2nd W12A Kate Smirnova 3rd

Congratulations to the NZ team for the weekend for a fine win including AOC's Rob J who was fourth overall M21E and first on Day 3. Also a huge thank you to all the QB organizers - well done - we had one very good event!!!

Counties Manukau news By Hilary Iles

Welcome back Chris from her holiday in the UK although having sick children for the first two weeks won't have been much fun. Next challenge will be moving into their new house. It's been great to see lots of our junior members doing so well at the secondary school champs and at the queen's birthday event. The first OY has passed and for some of us it will be memorable, for those who weren't there -great area - new start location - challenging courses - muddy mud, many thanks to the setter, controller and helpers for all their hard work. An update on Martin Peat's overseas orienteering

adventures - he was 60th in the short distance World University Champs and was only 10mins 40sec behind the winner. The distance and standard was equal to a world elite race. The long distance (14.4k) was won in 82.59min. Martin was 68th, 48min behind. He now goes to the World Juniors, which may be a little more forgiving. Good luck. I'm now off to the South Island for a weeks tramping and Ross is off to Fiji, the rest of the club will be working hard at the Mountain Bike

orienteering champs in Waiuku forest - looking

like being a great event.

Happy hols! Hilary Iles 5

North West News by Gay Ambler

Hi All,

Well after all the events up until the end of May, the calendar seemed to go quite quiet after the Queens Birthday event, that gave us large hills at Kelland Road on the Saturday (and just for good measure the heavens gave the competitors cold driving rain), driving wind and sand off the sand dunes at Otakanini Coastal on the Sunday (more sun and downpours in the morning, but got a bit brighter in the late morning). Lastly Monday at Hobbits W o o d with more wind and driving sand from the dunes but the weather was definitely kinder. On the Sunday the Coffee man in his little trailer arrived about lunchtime after he had already been making coffee at the Orewa markets. What a sight for many he was. Made great coffee and Chai Latte's. A couple from the South Island were standing in line waiting for their coffee, laughing and making comments about "This could only happen in Auckland, where else would you find a mobile Latte Machine in a forest". We gave them heaps, needless to say. Told them we only organised it for the competitors from down south, to teach them some Auckland culture. There was lots of fun and laughter as we waited in line. The coffee man also came along on the Monday and I think we will have to organise him as a fixture for more of our multi events.

The competition that the Kiwi Elites had with the Aussie Elites over the Queens Birthday Weekend was very entertaining, and great to see the great friendship between the two camps. For those of you who do not know, the New Zealanders won the competition.

North West members who did well over the weekend are as follows. These are the men's overall placings for the weekend. MARK LAWSON - M21E (2ND), GEOFF MEAD and PAUL GILKISON M45A (had their usual tussle for 1st and 2 n d , ROBERT MURPHY M21AS (1st), DAVE MIDDLETON M55A (1st) Dave won the comp by just 28secs over one of his hot competitors Ross Brighouse of Counties Manukau, GARY FARQUHAR M60A (2nd), THOMAS REYNOLDS M16A (3rd), PETER GODFREY M65A (3rd), BERT CHAPMAN and PHIL MELLSOP M70A (1ST

and 2ND), OUR EVERGREEN RALPH KING M80A (1st), OWEN MEANS M21B (1st - Owen blew away his competitors, he was the only one to finish the 3 days in his class. Way to go Owen.), NICK MEAD M14A (2ND), JOHN BARRETT M50B (1ST) and BJ REYNOLDS M10 (2ND) Great effort BJ.

The women did well too with MARQUITA GELDERMAN W21E (1ST), LISA MEAD Aand PHILLIPA POOLE (W45A) (1ST

and 2ND), JILL SMITHIES W50A (3RD), JILL DALTON and MARY MOEN W55A (1ST AND

2ND) MELANIE MICHELS W16A (1ST), VICTORIA PIKE W21B (1ST), SARAH GILKISON W14A (1ST), RENEE BEVERIDGE W12A (4TH)

The first OY of the year was at 4 Seasons Map on Sunday 26th June and I see from the results that the North West runners did well. The Amblers and the Middleton's were recovering from a Mid Winter Christmas Dinner at Cooks Beach on the Coromandel Peninsula. We had a great time, hope you all did at the event.

Jill has put out a great July news update on the email waves, and has included the results from the New Zealand Mountain Bike Champs from last weekend. Congratulations to you all that competed. But amongst you all there is a wounded soldier who finished the last 3 controls after he had a bad fall, put his bike into his car, drove home and didn't want too much fuss made about his arm, and finally was dragged to Emergency at the Hospital on Sunday morning. To be told after an X-Ray that yes Mr Moen you will have to have an operation and a plate put in your arm. And they say Kiwis are tough. These Norwegians may have it all over us. Rob and I visited today and Mary took some photos of Terje and Rob showing their wounds, as Rob has had an operation on his knee and is on crutches for another 5 weeks. Rob did manage to get a clearance though to fly to Australia last weekend to attend our son Peter's engagement to his lovely fiancée' Kristina (better known as Kricket). We had 4 days of beautiful fine weather, not a cloud in the sky. It was all over too quick and we were flying home again.

From the Archives By John Powell

July 1994 was a quiet month. Central club had a promotional event at Kiwitahi with Scott Vernell and Rob Crawford setting and controlling. The first of the OY series started on the last day of the month on the 1993 edition of the Waiuku map with Tania Robinson and Shane Phillips putting it together.

The orienteering may have been sparse but the newsletter was an omnibus edition of thirty one pages. The editor, Mark Roberts, continued his campaign to have more detailed and easier specifications for beginners courses and for median times, rather than winning times, to be used for beginners.

The club news sections recorded winners at the national championships, which were hosted by the Hamilton club. The classic was held on the Glenora map, "very scenic and strenuous, but it did not present the many technical challenges that we have come to expect ..". A highlight of the weekend was the hangi meal at the Maketu marae next door to the Kawhia forest map, which was the venue for the other two events.

Winners were:

Central - Katherine Bolt, W12A, classic; Jamie Munro, M14A, short-O; Richard Bolt, M18A short-O; Rob Jessop, M21E, classic and short-O

CMOC - Tania Robinson, W21E, classic, short-O and relay; Shane Phillips, M21S; Linda Brighouse W35B, classic; Trish Aspin, W45A, classic; and John and Val Robinson (no further information given).

NWOC - Peter Ambler, Phillip Larcombe, Colin Martin and Ralph King (ditto).

Other club news included a welcome to Pip Poole, Paul Gilkison and daughter Sarah and a report from the Jagers who had recently moved to Brunei ("runs in the jungle are tame and the social life after the runs is wild"). There was also a brief description of Central club's beginnings - Tony Nicholls on a forest run finds Gordon Pirie and Ralph King, who are known to Tony through harriers, doing strange things with orange buckets hanging from trees. Tony and some of the harriers that he ran with took up 'cunning running' and formed the Central club.

Huia Rogaine By Shaun Collins

Another great day for a rogaine at Huia!. We ended up with 220 people making up 82 teams. Route choice was even more crucial at Huia (Southern end of the Waitakere ranges) than our Piha event last month with a smaller network of tracks meaning once you had committed to a loop you were stuck on it with very few cut-off options. Rain leading up to the event also meant there was a good amount of mud on the tracks.

The 6 hour event attracted 28 teams (76 people) and was won by a mixed open team "www.sarva.co.nz" team of ex-Auckland club orienteers Darren Ashmore and Rebecca Smith. Darren and Rebecca won this race with a great route choice that collected 1030 points and arrived home with 5 and a half minutes to spare. Their route made use of the better running (roads and better running tracks). This tactic is something I'm sure all the competitors would agree, was a good plan. Next home was open mens team "The Ox and Trail Junkie" (Lach Grey and Wayne Oxenham) with 990 points after deducting 30 points for being late. In third was veteran mens team "Parkin/Hodgetts" (Wayne Hodgetts and Geoff Parkin) with 980 points after deducting 70 points for being 6 1/2 minutes late. All three teams did the special stage (a 1:5000 map of a local permanent orienteering course) first collecting a quick 200 points before leaving a 2 square kms area around the event centre. Phil and I have a couple of different routes that we think would be competitive so we'll let you know what we managed once we've done it.

The 3 hour event was the most popular with 54 teams (142 people) battling it out. The winners were Veteran mens team "Fast Forward" made up of Malcolm Law, Pete Swanson and Auckland club orienteer Guy Cory-Wright who collected 590 points. The next three teams were tied on 520 points but based on time - 2 hours 52 was fastest so taking second was mixed open team "Matt & Tania" (Matt and Tania Tuck). And in third in a time of 2 hours 56 was open mens team "MIGS" (Ben Watt and Jonathan Cleland). All of these top three teams did the same controls all to the west of the event centre, just in a different order from each other. Huia is quite difficult to plan a good three hour route and this was proven in that all of the

timed out teams (more than half an hour late) were from the 3 hour event.

Thanks also to Sean Coleman who was our paramedic for the day and to all those people who stayed behind afterwards to help us with a search. Thankfully they didn't need to go out into the cold dark night as the lost party ware eventually picked up and dropped back at the event centre.

P6 Adventure Race (Paddle, Pedal, Plod, Puzzle, Plan, Pursuit) This is our next race and is planned for 6th November 2004 @ a secret location less than 90 minutes from Auckland. A 6 hour adventure race involving kayak - mountain bike - run/walk - simple navigation - team work and strategy and mystery activities. Teams of 4 or 2 people with no support crew required. This event will use the rogaine format so will be 6 hours for everyone - from speed freak to weekend warrior!

Keep an eye on our website www.lacticturkey.co.nz for more details coming soon and full race results.

Cheers Shaun and Phil

Peter Godfrey - AOA OY Statistician

4 July 2004 Footnote 1: Some juniors may not realise that their OY grade depends on their age at 31 December 2004, not their c u r r e n t age. For example, if they are currently aged 14 but turn 15 in November, they are not eligible to compete for points in M14A or W14A even now, but should run in M or W 16A. Footnote 2: A number of people have been listed as Casuals. Some of them are ineligible for OY points as they belong to no club, but others may have joined an affiliated club recently, and wonder why they have been excluded from points allocation. Clubs have the duty to notify the OY Statistician of any new financial members before an OY event. If the club does not do so, the new member can not be given OY points.

Hi everyone, There's not really much happening in the orienteering world today, the score series has finished, and it's the school holidays. But the OY series has just started and there should be some great courses set to battle it out for the title, so I hope I'll see lots of keen people out there getting into it. Not so long ago (the day before the 1st OY) there was a mountain bike event out at Woodhill forest, on the back of Beautiful Hills, almost at Pulpit Rock. This was a really good event, the courses (well the one I did) weren't too long, the tracks were in rideable condition, there weren't

many hills, it was an overall enjoyable ride, and the weather was just perfect! I think there's another few mountain bike events coming up, so it'll be great to see people into that as well as foot orienteering, it's a bit more physical, but easier orienteering.

The New Zealand secondary schools champs is coming up as well, so good luck to all you going down there, and show them what you're made of!

Sarah
