Introduction

First of all, Poss, please tell us something about yourself. For example, where did you grow up, and where did you do your schooling?

Where did you meet Vince, and where were you married?

I remember Vince from my own school days at Ashgrove. I remember particularly his feats on the athletics track under the guidance of coach, Mr Arch Ferrier. I imagine that he spoke fondly of his Ashgrove days?

I believe that your own brother, Dan Currier, came to Ashgrove some years after Vince. What did he end up doing?

I know that Vince’s own father, Bill, received a Marist education by attending St Joseph’s College Hunters Hill in Sydney. Did you know Vince’s dad, and what were the circumstances of his going to Sydney when there were several Queensland boarding schools much closer?

What work did Vince’s dad do in Winton?

And what about Vince himself? What work did he apply himself to upon leaving school? What was his lifetime occupation?

INTERVIEW WITH MRS POSS EVERTTopic: Two College Captains from the Evert family

Grandfather Vince Evert, (1950) and Grandson Sean Coughlan (2010)24 March 2010 at Marist College Ashgrove Q

Conducted by Br Roger Burke

Now I would like you to share something about your own family, the one raised by yourself and Vince. First of all, how many children?

Did all your children complete their primary schooling in Winton?

I believe that your four (4) sons went to Ashgrove. How was that for them?

Where does son James live now, and what does he do?

You said you had six daughters. Where did you and Vince send them for their secondary schooling? Let’s take them one by one.

Evert family, would you kindly say where each of your daughters is now living?

You must have received a big thrill to have their lad, Sean, elected as College Captain.

Page 16: The Ashgrovian 2010 Edition 1

T H E A S H G R O V I A N

To summarise what we have beentalking about, how many grandchildren do you now have at the College?

You had ten children of your own. How many grandchildren and great grandchildren?

I went to school here at Ashgrove with Vince’s younger brothers, Neale and Peter. I know that Neale, himself the father of a large family, passed away a few years ago, and Peter now lives on the Gold Coast. Would you like to tell me about each of them, starting with Neale, and including whether any of his boys came to Ashgrove?

What about Peter? What did he do? Any boys at Ashgrove?

I sense that Winton town has been a great nursery for Ashgrove boarders over the years. Are you able to name some Winton boys who have come?

Are there any further comments you would like to make?

talent fronted up for an early start at our annual golf day, to be greeted by our host at Keperra Country Golf Club, Col Lansberg. As usual, Col and his band of merry workers ensured that it was a trouble free day for all concerned, and for that I thank him and his staff. It is our eleventh year that we have been running this day and all these have been at Keperra, which probably tells you something.

Clear skies, well groomed fairways and cold beer, perfect! Then I teed off, ah well, nothing else to do but

was not the only one. The determination of a particular Headmaster not to succumb to imbibing any form of brewed substance was indeed admirable. As it was, my group made up for his reluctance. I must have made an impression as Peter asked if I was available to say grace at the Year 5 parent’s dinner that night, but I graciously declined, or at least I think I did. There may have been some profanity involved.

As usual from what I could understand from those at the 19th hole, there were indeed some memorable shots both good and bad.Congratulations to Bill Andrews from Trilby Misso and his group who were winners on the day. For those of

gross 66, net 54.34. John Shanahan and Gary Allen won nearest the pins and Dom Kelly for longest drive. To Mark Nightingale and Brendon Ainsworth who supplied prizes for the day, a big thank you. To Barry Flaherty from the Defence Reserves Support Council, who I am told, spoke passionately about the role of the Reserves, thank you for your ongoing support.

To our hole sponsors, Trilby Misso, Harg & Co, College Foundation, Campbell Dynamics and Ithaca Ice Works,

only roughly 296 sleeps until the next golf day.
