During the week of October 8th and 12th elementary and junior high students had a

presentation from Dare to Care. The presentation was given by Kim Edwards and Randy

Chevrier. The presentations were on anti-bullying and were very engaging. Comments

made by students during the presentation were said that the presentation was an eye

opening and an emotional experience.

better working environment. At the end of the presentation students were given a time to

apologize to those who they have teased or bullied.

AOOL in the Am It’s back and better than ever!

By Kaitlyn Scott-Brown A fresh start to the year and a whole new cast and crew for this year’s AOOL in the

Am. If you aren’t familiar with Ascension’s news broadcast, it is a way for our students to

connect and keep up with our school so you can partake as much throughout the school as

possible. We have a bright, lively team to report to you all of Ascension’s upcoming

activities, your weekly sports events, and canteen being sold every day in the upcoming

week. It will air on every Monday morning during your religion period. Our cast consists

of Jamie Simms, Grayden Stangness as our wonderful hosts, Alexis Espanioli and Kathrina

Espanol as our sports broadcasters. Lastly there is Thomas Lobb as canteen broadcaster

and Riley Webber. They all work on the editing and filming together.

After speaking with sports and side broadcaster

Alexis Espanioli she has said they really make a good

team. They all have their own creative ideas and

personalities to bring to AOOL in the Am, making it

the broadcast to watch. I also spoke with host and

editor Jamie Simms who has quite a passion for

AOOL in the Am. Jamie originally decided to take

part in AOOL in the Am because he is skilled in

editing, creating storylines and editing videos all the

time. He is imaginative and editing is a fun way to

pass time. Everyone who is involved in the process he says, works very well together and it

is overall an awesome experience. Jamie’s goal through the broadcast is to build from last

year’s but also to put their own spin on it by mixing comedy with entertainment. They

want to get the information out in a way that is understandable but fun too, Jamie has told

me. If Jamie could describe their team in one word he said it would be “helpful”. He can’t

wait for you to see their next material.

The 7Th Graders head to Winsport for Obstacle

Course Training By Mira Ty

On the the 16th, 17th, and 18th of October, the seventh graders head out for an

exciting time at Winsport to participate in an obstacle course training program. The

purpose of this field trip was to see whether kids would be interested in these types of

activities, and more importantly to stay fit. The course included obstacles seen on the show

American Ninja Warrior like the known Warped Wall, Quintuple Steps, and many others.

“It was fun but, very tiring.”a student said, “I would maybe do it again but, I will

risk having some sore arms.” Others were indifferent, another grade 7 student said, “It was

very tiring and scary. Especially when you climbed objects but, I would do it again.”

Overall, majority of the kids wanted to do it again. “It was fun but made me sore. If I had

the chance I would do it again,”a student replied. There were comments that did wish that

there were more variety in the obstacles, like this one, “It’s actually pretty nice but they

should have added more things to it. Also, the obstacles we’re quite challenging.”

The Obstacle Course Training Program takes place at the WinsportTM Institute

Building and is held by Cor.fit.

Hallway Etiquette Be safe around your buddies

By Kathrina Espanol Don’t you hate it when you’re rushing to your next class and the people in front of you are

walking at a speed of a snail? Always constantly thinking about how to make it to your

next class safely and quick? Ever thought we can do something to improve our transitions

from class to class? I have interviewed 2 perspectives to see how elementary and junior

high students think about our school hallways.

Gabrielle Robles, a grade 1 student, stated that “They push people when they walk. The

hallways are always crowded. People should nicely say ‘excuse me, can I please get

through”. Another student named Yna Aspiras, a ninth grader also voiced her opinion on

our hallways. “I think it's very crowded because there are kids who don't move and stops

the traffic from moving. I think we can improve the traffic in the hallways by having one

class at a time so not all students would be in the hallway at the same time.” There is an

unwritten rule about walking and some people may not be aware of it. The do’s and don’ts

of walking are 1. NO SLOWING DOWN. This unwritten rule applies everywhere not just

in schools. People have places to go and when other people slow down, is just asking for a

disaster. Rule 2. NO ROUGH HOUSING WITH EACH OTHER. Please acknowledge

others around you, especially the young ones coming from the music room. Rule 3. STAY

ON YOUR OWN LANE. Stay on the right side when walking to avoid collision with

others. This rule is similar to driving a car!

In conclusion, please be aware of people around you to keep you and others safe. Our

school consists of more than 800 students, so our school is very pact. We not only have

Junior High students, but we also have the little Elementary students with us. We must all

act in a cautious manner. Having everyone respect each other in the hallway will keep our

school safe.

Vaccinations By Christal Robles

WINTER IS COMING...but so are vaccinations!

“ I couldn’t care less, just get it over with, jam me with some dead viruses,” said Sarah

Tapping. Our beloved gr.9s are quaking by the thought of vaccines. Around end of October

2018 the gr. 9s were getting vaccines from our beloved nurses. They will getting

throughout the year. There has been mixed emotions from the occuring event. First off, the

gr. 9s are getting vaccines for Diphtheria , Tetanus , Pertussis and Meningococcal

conjugate quadrivalent. Even though there might be a lot, it is still free and can save you

from death. For other grades from gr.1-5 some may get a check up.

Vaccinations can come as pretty scary for most people . Some of the ways you could

cope with the anxiety and fear of needles are distracting yourself and know that it would

just take up less than a second. You could also try to breath slowly to calm your breathing

if you are ever in a panic situation and there would be stuffies and squishes available.

Make sure to eat healthy and eat a lot before and the day of the vaccinations. Get enough

sleep and if ever any doubt, ask a trusted adult for advice or questions about the

vaccinations. Even though it might be scary, at least you will be immune to this viruses.

Don’t forget to go check out Jamie Simms’ (A grade

9 student at Ascension of our lord School)

youtube channel- Icey Pie!

Remembrance Day : The time to remember our heroes By Sarah Dickinson

November 11th, a day to remember the people who have fallen

for us. They sacrificed their lives for us just to save our freedom and

protect us from people who could possibly harm us Canadians. They

went through such tragic events to save Canada. This year is the 100th

remembrance day since the end of World War 1. We should honour

this remembrance day just a little bit more than usual as it is more

significant than other years. To be involved in this memorable day you

can wear a poppy either from a store that you will donate money for it,

or they our given to you in our school on the Remembrance day

celebration. If you find a poppy on the ground and seek no want for it,

Ms.Hryhoryshyn has a great collection of poppies on her curtains that

she has been collecting for 2 years.

Jacket Racket

You got a jacket, put it on our racket!

By Sarah Dickinson

Editor Fiona Manuel

It’s that time of year again when snow starts falling and the

weather is too cold to just wear a sweater. People all around

Calgary are bundling up to stay warm. But, what if people can’t

afford winter clothing? What will keep them warm during this

weather? That’s why AOOL participates in Jacket Racket.

Jacket Racket allows people in our community and school to

contribute to the safety and health of people from all over the

city. An interview from Meika Malig, a Grade 9 student, about

her opinion on Jacket Racket states: “It’s a good charity event

and it helps a lot of people, but there’s one problem to it. The

main problem is that not everyone participates in it. There’s no

encouragement and no motivation.”

This event is run by Ms. Hryhoryshyn. She has asked for clean, gently used hats, mittens,

scarves, jackets, and snow pants. All donations will be filtered through Kingsland

Elementary School and distributed throughout the city to places in need of winter clothing.

Some of these places include the Drop in Center and the Mustard Seed. Ms.Hryhoryshyn

has asked that all donations are to be in by November 5th in Portable 15. Donating to

Jacket Racket really helps people across Calgary. The people who receive the clothing are

very grateful and will not waste any of it. If you have any further questions about Jacket

Racket you can email Ms.Hryhoryshyn ([email protected]) or talk to her

personally in portable 15. Hope to see you bring your jackets in!
