MISS BEHAVIOR Dear Miss Behavior: I have been checking your archives, and I have concluded that it has been six years since you did a column devoted to Memorial Day. I am sure your readers will enjoy hearing, once again, about the activities of the Withits and the Lackings. How are they planning to observe Memorial Day? Yours,

Cecilia Celebrate

Dear CC: Thank you so much for the advice. I am always happy to comply with my readers' suggestions; I am also proud to be ecologically correct (so to speak) as I recycle old (but still timely) columns. I have cast my glance in the direction of the Lackings. They seem to be planning to spend the day engaging in the usual diversions: watching television, eating, engaging in a little shopping, maybe a little bickering, or even a full-scale argument toward the end of the day. As for the Withits, they have a full day planned. They will watch the Memorial Day parade from their favorite spot. They will recall that Memorial Day is about remembering those who have died in our country's wars. (The first Memorial Day, as many have forgotten, was observed on May 30, 1868, on the order of General John Logan, who wanted the graves of the American Civil War dead decorated. Our parents or grandparents may still call this event Decoration Day.) This year, the Withits will especially remember those who died during the last year in service to our country. As they place their American flag in its holder near their front door, they will offer prayers for the dead, for the missing, and for the injured; they will also offer prayers for an end to terrorism and war. The Withits always complete their Memorial Day with a backyard picnic to which they have invited all their neighbors and friends. Everyone brings delicious food to share, and as the sun sinks slowly in the west, they look back on a day filled with "all feasting and fun" (see Through The Looking Glass, Ch. II). As for me, I am still hoping for an invitation from the Withits; too bad they don't know who I am! And let me add another observation, one I neglected to mention before. Holidays should be holidays, days of rest, days of peace, days of celebration, not days filled with the “same old, same old” (unlike today’s column, which is the same as one from six years ago). Yours for a lovely holiday,

Miss B.

Saint of the Week Joan of Arc

The patron of soldiers and of France, Joan of Arc was born on January 6, 1412 in Domrémy, a village in the province of Lorraine in northeast France. As a young girl, Joan (Jeanne in French) claimed to hear the voices of St. Michael, St. Catherine, and St. Margaret, and in May of 1428 Joan reported that the voices had told her to help the king of France regain his kingdom. At the time the king was opposed by the Duke of Burgundy, who, in turn, was in league with the English king. Eventually, Joan was given a small army, which she led to a number of victories. In 1430, however, the Burgundians captured her and sold her to the English. She went on trial at Rouen, was condemned to death as a heretic, and burned at the stake on May 30, 1431; she was only nineteen. Thirty years later the verdict was reversed, and in 1920 Joan of Arc was canonized a saint of the Catholic Church. Many artists and writers have been fascinated with Joan’s story, among them George Bernard Shaw, who wrote a play titled Saint Joan, and Carl Dreyer, the Danish film director who created the classic silent film The Passion of Joan of Arc. Swedish actress Ingrid Bergman played the saint in the 1948 Technicolor film, Joan of Arc. Saint Joan’s feast is celebrated on the anniversary of her death, May 30.

SAVE THE DATE Hello Neighbors and Friends! We want to make you aware of a wonderful upcoming event on Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at St. Charles Church! Chris Stefanick – world-renowned Catholic author and speaker – will be presenting a life-changing event called REBOOT! Live! A number of parishes in our area, St. Dominic Parish in Youngs-town, St. Michael Parish in Canfield and St. Rose Parish in Girard are helping St. Charles Parish in sponsoring this event. His events usually sell-out, so we wanted to make sure you are aware of it before it does, precisely so you can get your tickets while they last. Below are some links on Chris Stefanick, and his organization (Real Life Catholic). To purchase tickets, you can visit the web-site below or call the Parish office at (330) 758-2325. The tick-ets are just $20 each, which includes admission and other re-sources. We really hope to see you there on September 19th at St. Charles Church! Your spiritual life is worth it!
