1GettingStarted
Drawing animals is more than just making a realistic picture; it’s aboutcapturingananimal’sessenceinawaythatmakesitcomealiveonthepaper.Todothis, thereareafewtechniquesyouneedtoknowandmaterialsyoushouldbecomfortable with. You don’t need much to draw your favorite animalsrealistically, andthischapterwillshowyouhowtousethesefewdrawingtoolsand techniques effectively. Always remember that one of the most importantsecretstodrawinganimalsistoenjoytheadventureandchallengeofbecomingabetterartist.

Artist’sField-Pack
Obtaining referencematerial on animals oftenmeans going afield. Youmust, after all, go to where the animals are. This means going to zoos, parks, mountainsandmeadows.Everyanimalhasadifferenthomeandyoumustseekthem out to obtain the necessary information to accurately portray animals inyourart.Althoughcatsanddogscanoftenbestudiedanddrawninthecomfortofyourownhome,mostbirdsandmammalsliveinthewildorinotheroutdoorenvironments.Therefore, you should travelwith a field pack stockedwith thenecessary art tools.A decent camerawithwhich to take reference photoswillsimplify your job of illustrating animals, too. After all, without adequate andaccurate reference material, it is more difficult to portray your subjectrealistically. I recommend a 35mm SLR (single-lens reflex) camera withdifferentlenses.
MYFIELDPACKMypersonalfieldpackisnormallystockedwithasketchpad, pencils, erasers, pastels, watercolorbox, brushes, sharpeningtools, tortillions, transparenttape, rulers and a can of fixative. Depending on my quarry, I may also carrybinoculars and camera gear. Certain animals such as small, fidgety birds areeasier to illustrate with reference photos. More dangerous animals are bestdrawnfromasafedistance.
