The Articles of Confederation

Articles of Confederation (1777) = 1st American

constitution

The articles created a very loose alliance of states

Written after most state constitutions

Intended to unite the nation

Difficult to write a constitution ALL states would

approve

People feared replacing tyranny of British rule with

another strong government

*Congress needed 9 states to approve a law*Congress could NOT:

-regulate trade between states -regulate trade between states & foreign countries

-tax the states-force the states to contribute funds

Successes of the Articles of Confederation

LAND ORDINANCE OF 1785- Set up a system of settling the Northwest Territory(i.e. Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio)- divided the land into townships- Divided further into square miles to be sold for $640- set up one school per township

Successes of the Articles of Confederation

NORTHWEST ORDINANCE (1787)

- set up government for the Northwest Territory- guaranteed basic rights to settlers- outlawed slavery in the territory
