Read Alliance works to improve the educational trajectory of at-risk kindergarten and first grade students through one-to-one tutoring in foundational reading skills.

“It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child”

-Pablo Picasso

What does a Literacy Room Art Studio look like?

Imagine a place where struggling readers respond to picture books through conversation…

…writing…

…creating art…

…and dramatization.

For many of us, a picture book is our first exposure to both art and literature.

For many Read Alliance students, the Literacy & Art Program provides them with their first art-making experiences.

Students use a variety of materials and techniques to respond to literature through self-expression.

They make personal connections to stories and pictures, which helps develop listening, speaking and writing skills.

When students are encouraged to use their imagination…

…create conversation…

…experience new shapes and textures…

…and work together…

…they are provided with a powerful means of self-expression that leads to language and literacy development.

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.”

–Pablo Picasso
