あなたが作るアルゼンチンアリ駆除器（アルゼンチンアリ･ストロー）で

す。アルゼンチンアリは住宅敷地に設置されたアルゼンチンアリ･ストロ

ーの中に入って、ホウ酸と砂糖を水に溶かした薬液を吸って（図１、図

２）巣に持ち帰り、仲間に分けますので多数のアルゼンチンアリを駆除す

ることができます。

作り方は、一端が閉じられたストローに薬液を入れ、六角ナット（重し）

を取り付けるだけです（図３）。説明文は読まなくても図（図１～７）と表

（表１～３）だけで作ることができることでしょう。

The Argentine ant straw is an Argentine ant extermination container

that can be made by yourself . Argentine ants enter the straw placed in

a garden to take the boric acid and sugared water solution (see Fig.1

and Fig.2), and then bring it back to their nest s to share it with the

others. In this way you can exterminate a large number of Argentine

ants.

You can make the Argentine ant straw by injecting the solution into a

straw which is sealed at one end and by attaching hexagon nuts as

weights (see Fig.3) . It is possible to make the straw by looking at only

the Figures (Fig.1 ～ 7) and Tables (Table1 ～ 3), without reading the

explanatory description .

アルゼンチンアリ･ストローの作り方

手順１．ストローの片方の端をアイロンで閉鎖

一端が閉鎖されたストローの中に水を注入した状態で、もう一端の開放口

を下に傾けても直径が 6mm より細いストローでは、水は外に漏れ出しにく

いです（衝撃を加えると漏れ出します）。そこで、表１に示す直径 5、 6mm

の市販ストローの一端（長さ 3～ 4mm）をアイロンでくっつけて閉鎖します

（熱融着）。

アイロンにストローがくっつかないようにするため、図４に示すように、

ストローの端にあらかじめアルミ箔を巻き付け、木の台に載せてアイロン

で熱融着します。アイロンがけの温度と時間は、あらかじめ別のストローで

試験して決めておきます。時間は数秒単位です。熱融着するストローの数は

失敗を考えて多目にします。

なお、蛇腹部（屈曲部）が付いているストローは、蛇腹部から遠い方の端

を閉じます。また、六角ナットが蛇腹部を通らない場合は、あらかじめ六角

ナットをストローに通してから端を閉じます。

How to make an Argentine ant straw

Process 1. Seal one end of a straw by the heat of an electric iron

With the water included and one end sealed, i f the diameter of the straw

is less than 6mm, it is harder for the water inside to escape (Unless force

is applied). The first process is to seal one end (3～ 4mm in length) of a

straw, with a diameter of 5mm and 6mm sold at a local market, by the

heat of an electric iron . The size and prices of the straws are shown in

Table 1.

One end of the straw is covered by aluminum foil as shown in Fig.4 to

prevent the adhesion between the straw and an electric iron, which then

can be sealed by the heat of an electric iron on a wood block. The heating

temperature and heating time (in seconds) for sealing can be determined

by a preliminary test using a different straw. The number of straws being

sealed should be more than is needed, considering the number of failures

during sealing.

When using a bendable straw, the end without the bent should be sealed.

If the bent of the straw cannot be passed through the hole of the hexagon

nut, you have to seal the straw after inserting it into the hole.

ストローの端が完全に閉じたかは、図５に示すように水の中に閉じた端を

入れて反対側の開放口側を口に入れて息を吹き込んで確かめます。空気が

水の中に漏れなければ OK です（図５左）。漏れれば（図５右）もう一度熱

融着をするか、諦めて捨てます。

You can confirm whether the sealing of the straw is perfect or not by

watching for air leakage from the sealed end of the straw in water by

breathing through the straw as shown in Fig.5. If there is no air bubbles

in water, the sealing is perfect ( see Fig.5 left) . I f there is air bubbles,

the sealing is not perfect ( see Fig.5 right), and so you can try sealing

again or discard the straw.

手順２．ホウ酸・砂糖水溶液（薬液）の作製

図６に示すように、お湯 100g（＝ 100ml）にホウ酸 3g を溶かし、さらに

砂糖 25ｇを溶かして薬液を作ります。薬液価格は、表２に示すように 1ml

約 0.25 円です。薬液 100ml から直径 5 mm、6mm のストローで、それぞれ

34 本、 22 本のアルゼンチンアリ･ストローを作ることができます。

Process 2. How to make the boric acid and sugared water solution

You can make the boric acid and sugared water solution by first,

dissolving 3g of boric acid and secondly, 25g of sugar in 100g（＝ 100ml）

of hot water as shown in Fig.6 . The price of the solution is about 0.25

yen per the volume of 1ml as shown in Table 2. You can make 34

Argentine ant straws with straws with a diameter of 5mm or 22 with

ones with a diameter of 6mm from 100ml of the solution.

手順３．薬液をストローに注入

薬液を注射器に吸いとり、図７に示すように、注射器の針をストローの開

放口から奥に差し込み、薬液面がストローの開放口から 10mm 位奥にくる

まで薬液を注入してください。注入量の目安は、表１に示すように、直径 5、

6mm のストローで、それぞれ 2.9、 4.5ml です。

注入の途中で空気が薬液に入り込んだ場合は、注入をやめて、ストローを

立てた状態で振り下ろして閉鎖側の端を机か何かに当てて衝撃を与えるか、

あるいは、指でストローを弾いて衝撃を与えて空気を上に移動させます。空

気が抜けたら注入を再開してください。

余った薬液は蓋付き容器に保管して、ストローの薬液が空になった時に、

またストローに注入します。

Process 3. Inject the boric acid and sugared water solution into the straw

After fi l l ing a syringe with the boric acid and sugared water solution,

insert the needle of the syringe to the bottom of the straw as shown in

Fig.7 and fi ll the straw to about 10mm from the opening with the

solution. Standard volume of the solution injected into the straws with

a diameter of 5mm and 6mm is 2.9ml and 4.5ml respectively.

I f the solution contains air during injection, stop injecting and remove

air inside the solution by tapping the sealed end of the straw against

something, such as a desk, or by tapping the straw with your finger,

moving the air bubble to the top. Then you can continue injecting the

solution into the straw.

You can store the solution left in a container with cap , and use it when

the straw of the solution is emptied by the ants .

手順４．ストローに六角ナットを取り付け

表３に示す六角ナット 2 個を、図２および図３に示すようにストローの前

後に取り付けます。これでアルゼンチンアリ･ストローが出来上がりました。

六角ナットが、重しとなってストローが風で飛びにくくなり、また、台と

なってストローの開放口が地面から浮き上がり、雨水が開放口から浸入し

にくくなります。

Process 4. Attach hexagon nuts as weights to the straw

Finally you have to attach two hexagon nuts, shown in Table 3 , to

both ends of the straw as shown in Fig.2 and Fig.3. Then you have

made an Argentine ant straw.

The two hexagon nuts act as weights which prevent the straw from

being blown away and also raise the straw from the ground prevent ing

rainwater from entering it .

アルゼンチンアリ･ストローの設置の仕方

六角ナットの直線部分を接地させて、アルゼンチンアリ･ストローを複数

本バラバラに敷地内全体に設置します。アルゼンチンアリの行列上にスト

ローの開放口を置くと入りやすいです。また、図２や図３のように、開放口

に接するように周辺にある小石や小枝を置くとアルゼンチンアリが入りや

すくなります。

水平に設置したストローに入っている薬液は通常は漏れ出しませんが、ス

トローの内側が結露したり、その下側に線状に薬液が残ったりしている場

合は薬液が開放口側に移動することがあります。移動した場合は、ストロー

内に気液交換で空気が入り込み閉鎖空間ができます。この状態でストロー

内の温度が上がると、閉じ込められた空気が熱膨張して薬液を開放口から

外に押し出します。この漏れ出しを防ぐには、開放口側の六角ナットの下に

何かをはさんで高くし、ストローの開放口を少し上向きにして、薬液が開放

口側に移動しないようにします。

毎年 5 月位から 9 月位にかけて設置します。薬液がなくなるまでずっと

放置できます。薬液がなくなったら入れ直してください。寒くなってアルゼ

ンチンアリが少なくなってきたらアルゼンチンアリ ･ストローを回収して

ください。

アルゼンチンアリの数を減らすことによって家の中への侵入を抑制する

ことはできますが、すべてを根絶することは困難です。

How to place the Argentine ant straws in a garden

The Argentine ant straws must be placed separately in your garden.

Make sure to keep the straight part of hexagon nut in contact with the

ground. Many Argentine ants can easily enter the straw when the hole

of the straw is adjusted over their column with a small stone or twig put

beneath it , being in contact with the straw, as shown in Fig.2 and Fig.3.

The boric acid and sugared water solution does not escape from the

straw under ordinary circumstances after the straw is placed

horizontally. But when the inside of straw gets wet with dew or i f there

is solution left at the bottom linearly, the solution may move from the

bottom side to the opening. If this occurs , air wil l enter the straw owing

to the gas-l iquid exchange and make an enclosed space , which causes

expansion as a result of heating and then will push the solution out of

the straw. In order to prevent this , the hole of the straw has to be faced

sl ightly upward by ti lt ing the straw with something which is inserted

under the hexagon nut attached to the open side.

You can place the Argentine ant straws from about April to about

September every year and leave it until the straws of the solution are

emptied. When emptied, f i l l the straws with the solution again. You have

to collect the straws as it gets cold, and the number of Argentine ants

decrease.

It is possible to decrease the number of the Argentine ants enough to

stop them from getting into homes considerably. But it is very difficult

to exterminate them completely.

アルゼンチンアリ･ストローの作製費

アルゼンチンアリ･ストロー 1 本あたりと薬液 1ml あたりの作製費用は、

表４に示すように、直径 5mm のものでそれぞれ 12 円 /本、 4.1 円 / ml、一

方、直径 6mm のものでそれぞれ 28～ 32 円 /本、 6.2～ 7.1 円 / ml となりま

す。したがって、直径 5mm のもの方が安く作ることができます。

なお、六角ナットを除いたストローと薬液だけの価格は 1 本あたり約 2

円と非常に安いです。したがって、六角ナットがもっと安く手に入れば、

または、六角ナットに代わる安い重しが手に入れば、もっと安く作ること

ができます。

The cost of making an Argentine ant straw

The total cost of the Argentine ant straw with a diameter of 5mm is

12yen per piece or 4.1yen per the volume of 1ml, and that with a

diameter of 6mm is 28~32yen or 6.2～ 7.1yen respectively, as shown in

Table 4. And so it is cheaper to make the Argentine ant straw with a

straw with a diameter of 5mm than that with a diameter of 6mm.

Viewing the costs mentioned above from another point, t he costs

without hexagon nuts, i .e. those of straws and the boric acid and

sugared water solution , are only about 2yen per piece of the straws. So

i f you can get cheap hexagon nuts or weights in place o f them, you can

make the Argentine ant straw cheaper than the total costs .

注意すること

１．薬液が手など皮膚に付いたら水で洗い落としてください。薬液が付いた

容器や注射器は水で洗浄して下さい。

２．子供やペットが薬液に触れないようにしてください。

３．薬液が入ったストローを振ったり、衝撃を与えたりしないようにしてく

ださい。薬液が飛び出します。

４．空になったストローに薬液を入れ直せば何回も使えます。

５．寒くなってアルゼンチンアリが少なくなって来たら、ストロ－内に残っ

た薬液はストローの開放口を下にして下向きに強く振って出し、ストロ

ーを空にしてください。ストローを水で洗浄し乾かせば来シーズンにま

た使えます。六角ナットとともに保管してください。余った薬液は来シ

ーズンも使えますので、蓋付き容器に保管してください。

Note

1. If the boric acid and sugared water solution gets on your skin of hand

or other body parts , wash it away with water. Container and syringe

must be washed, after using them.

2. Don’t let a child and pets touch the boric acid and sugared water

solution.

3. Don’t shake the Argentine ant straw which contains the boric acid and

sugared water solution , and also don’t put force on straw to prevent

the solution jumping out of the straw.

4. The Argentine ant straw which has been emptied by the ants can be

used many times by fi l l ing it with the solution again.

5. When the number of Argentine ants has decreased due to the cold,

empty the Argentine ant straws of the remaining solution by shaking

it strongly, facing the hole of straw downward. You can use the straws

which are washed with water and dried , the hexagon nuts and the

boric acid and sugared water solution stored in a container with cap

for the next season, keep ing them in a safe place .

補足（高度なアルゼンチンアリ･ストローの作り方）

補足１（ストローの端を斜めに切り落とす）

図８に示すように、ストローの端をハサミで斜めに切り落とし、とがった

先を上にして設置すると雨水が入りにくくなります。ただし、ストローが

180°回転して、とがった先が下になると逆に雨水が入ってしまいます。

六角ナットの穴が大きく、ストローとの間に隙間ができる場合は、ストロ

ーにビニールテープを巻いて隙間をなくせば、ストローの回転を抑えるこ

とができます。

Supplement (How to make an advanced Argentine ant straw)

Supplement 1 (Cutting a straw at an angle at one end )

You can cut an Argentine ant straw at an angle (45°) at one end with

scissors as shown in Fig.8 and place it with its hole facing downward to

prevent rainwater from entering it . But if this straw is rotated at an

angle of 180 degrees about a horizontal axis with its hole facing upward ,

rainwater enters it rather than the straw without cut.

When there is a clearance between the straw and the hexagon nut,

which is due to the larger diameter of a hole of the hexagon nut than

that of the straw, the straw is easy to move and rotate. You can prevent

the straw from moving and rotating by wrapping plastic tape round it

to f i l l the clearance.

補足２（ストローに保液体を挿入する）

クッキングペーパーを細いストロー（芯ストロー）に巻き付けた後、長さ

10mm に切って保液体とし、これを、図９に示すように、アルゼンチンアリ･

ストローの開放口のすぐ奥に装着します。

注射器の針を保液体の穴（芯ストローの穴）に通し、保液体全体が薬液に

浸るまでストローの中に薬液を注入した後、保液体と薬液面との間に 2、

3mm の隙間ができるまで薬液を吸い戻します。

薬液が染み込んだ保液体にアルゼンチンアリは、図１に示すように、すぐ

に取り付き、続いて、ストローの中に入り込みます。

保液体があるとストローに衝撃が加わっても薬液が漏れにくくなるほか、

アルゼンチンアリより大きな昆虫がストローの中に入り込みません。

Supplement 2 (Inserting the absorptive pipe into the straw)

You can insert the absorptive pipe into an Argentine ant straw with

just a short distance from the opening of it as shown in Fig.9. The pipe

is made with a core straw of small diameter wrapped with a piece of

cooking paper and is cut off to a length of 10mm.

After inserting the needle of a syringe fi l led with the boric acid and

sugared water solution into the straw through the hole of the absorptive

pipe (i .e. that of a core straw) and fi l l ing it with the solution until the

pipe is soaked all in the solution, the solution has to be sucked back

until a gap of 2～ 3mm between the pipe and the surface of the solution

is made.

Argentine ants can take the solution absorbed in the pipe easily as

shown in Fig.1, and then will go into the straw.

The pipe prevents the solution from leaking out of the straw and also

other insects larger than the ant from entering the straw.
