Introducing the next-generation Peugeot 308. Unusually for a Peugeot, the name has been kept the same – but everything from the chassis up is new and improved. The small hatchback segment is incredibly competitive and to beat their rivals the team at Peugeot worked hard to make the new 308 more stylish, more effi cient, higher quality and a better drive.

You’ll have to try it for yourself to come to your own conclusion, but the facts speak for themselves. The new chassis saves 140kg of weight, though thanks to new construction techniques,

it’s stronger than before. That makes the new 308 more responsive and controlled, with shorter stopping distances and better performance.

It’s also more effi cient. Eight engines will be offered, mixing power and effi ciency. Every diesel engine option emits 100g/km of CO2 or less and achieves at least 70mpg, and next year’s BlueHDi model will deliver a segment-leading 91mpg.

But it’s not all dry effi ciency fi gures – the driver-focused interior comes equipped with a small steering wheel for better feel and pod-style instruments.

The centre console is dominated by an ultra-modern 9.7-inch touchscreen allowing for a mostly button-free dash. It’s a very stylish solution to the problems of cluttered modern interiors. The ŠKODA Rapid Spaceback recently arrived at our newly re-launched ŠKODA site in Leamington Spa and is turning heads already.

Spaceback improves on the Rapid’s looks no end, and the slick rear hatch glass extends down the tailgate in a waterfall effect. Elsewhere it’s the same uncluttered, timeless lines borrowed from the saloon. Suspension has also

Nissan took home three top trophies from the end-of-year WhatCar? Awards, more than any other manufacturer. Still more impressively, the all-new Qashqai took the hotly contested Car of the Year Award, fending off models from dozens of manufacturers. It was also named Best Small SUV – and it’s already at Arbury ready to test drive.

The Nissan Qashqai defined the crossover sector when it was first released in 2007. It’s been a best-seller ever since, finding favour with millions of buyers attracted to the mix of SUV practicality and hatchback running costs. So when it was time to introduce a new model, Nissan faced a challenge. The new car would have to live up to the success of its predecessor, and remain on top in a segment now brimming with tough competition.

Nissan needn’t have worried. The new car, designed engineered and built in the

UK, saw off all competition to claim the top prize.

What Car? Editor-in-Chief, Chas Hallett said: “The new Qashqai brings excellence and polish to a class of cars that was already brimming with talent and tempting buys. It has an interior worthy of its stylish looks, and it makes a fine family car. It's fantastic value for money and a very worthy Car of the Year.”

Nissan’s models weren’t only popular with the WhatCar? staff. The Nissan X-Trail was named the Reader Award Winner, chosen by 10,000 voters on the WhatCar? website. The X-Trail was revealed for the very first time at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2013 and will go on sale in July 2014. The new model is a significant departure from its body-on-frame predecessor but one thing is already clear : it’s going to be popular.
