The appreciative Alberto has even found a way to give back to help others. A self-taught painter, Alberto recently painted a still life which he donated to MMOW’s Annual Golf tournament auction. “I was so excited to help MMOW provide for other people in need!” he said, “just as others have done for me.”

If days are growing shorter and the hint of crispness is in the air, can Thanksgiving be far behind? The season of giving thanks offers MMOW the opportunity to say thank you to our very special volunteers. On Tuesday, November 13, we will gather at Allen Samuels Chrysler Dodge Jeep Alliance from 5:30 pm-7:30 p.m. to honor you and your commitment to our participants. We look forward to celebrating with you.

Your assistance has taken many forms--delivering meals, pantry staples, or fresh produce, assisting with senior center luncheons, helping raise funds at the golf tournament or fall fashion show, guiding MMOW through the Board of Trustees, helping with mailings and administrative tasks, or working at Sadie’s. Regardless of the assistance you provided, your impact has indelibly touched the lives of each of our participants. We thank you for enriching the lives of our participants and inspiring each of us on staff at MMOW.

Executive Director

Jim: The first time Jim came to a MMOW senior center luncheon in Haslet, he says he “felt like a shy girl at a dance.” But by the second visit he felt right at home.

Jim worked “as a grocery man” most of his life. At 16 his first job was delivering groceries — making 60-70 stops a day — for a grocer in Fort Worth. With food delivery in his blood, it was only natural that Jim eventually help out with MMOW. “I started delivering MMOW’s meals in Haslet about a year and a half ago, and I really enjoy it.”

Jim actually began attending the luncheons several years ago at the suggestion of a nurse who was caring for his wife of 51 years, Pat, after her stroke. Since her passing in 2011, Jim now says, “I would be isolated if it weren’t for these senior center luncheons,” Jim says. “Now I love taking care of these folks.”

Burt: When Burt retired in 2006, he had not really gotten to know anyone in the community, as his wife Peggy was ill. As her sole caregiver, the couple both received meals from MMOW, and Burt tremendously appreciated the respite

Birthdays are always cause for celebration, especially when

celebrating Mama Dot’s 94th!

Brigid Rose’s servant heart inspires all who know her. She loves people and expends tremendous energy helping make the world better, especially for MMOW’s seniors. Whether delivering meals, coordinating volunteers for MMOW, working with daughter Casey at Sadie’s, assisting at the golf tournament, or modeling in MMOW’s fashion show, Brigid’s upbeat attitude is infectious! She is a master of organization, bringing

order, fun, and humor to everything she does. Brigid has made a lasting impact on MMOW. She is dedicated to our participants and a terrific ambassador for MMOW. Brigid is our brilliant Shining Star.

meal. When Peggy died last November, Elizabeth Arnett, MMOW’s Home Delivery Division Coordinator in Haslet, encouraged Burt to visit the senior center, but he says, “I didn’t want to go.”

“Then one day,” Burt says, “Elizabeth stopped in, dragged me to a luncheon, and introduced me around. Everyone was so nice! I was ‘here to stay’ after that!”

Both Burt and Jim declared in chorus, “WE LOVE THIS PLACE!”

For a schedule of upcoming Senior Center Luncheons, please call the office at 817-491-1141. We’re always looking for new people to help serve, or just attend.

the big “Stocking Tree” decorated with paper stockings identifying those special gifts that will make the holidays memorable for MMOW’s homebound participants. The stockings don’t last long as eager customers, volunteers, civic organization members, and corporate friends take one (or more) to fulfill seniors’ wishes. A second tree is set up at Tater Junction in Wise County with a stocking to stuff for each of the participants in Wise County.

Your participation in Stockings for Seniors will not only make wonderful holiday memories for our participants, everyone involved in the program walks away with something special. From the donors who lovingly select special gifts, to the volunteers who deliver the gifts, the corporate groups

Fall is here, and the harvest is winding down. The bags of fresh produce food we’ve delivered all summer long to our meal participants have filled bellies and made smiles all across our region. Our goal of delivering over 1000 lbs. of fresh food to our participants this year is nearly met, thanks in part to your donations to our Summer Emergency Appeal.

We couldn’t have done this without the support of our preschool farmer teams from Primrose of Heritage Trace, Primrose of Eagle Ranch, and The Spanish School of Keller. Pinewood Hills Gracious Retirement Village residents also came out to plant, weed, and harvest. And vendors at Keller’s Farmers Market have been more than generous with our seniors by donating their surplus vegetables.

Donations of fresh fruits and vegetables from Common Ground Community Garden in North Richland Hills, the Wong

family in Southlake, and the Stone family in Southlake also made up a generous portion of the deliveries.

We have been blessed to have a new garden added to our family; West Wind Community Garden in Keller has donated a garden plot to MMOW’s Sharing the Harvest. Not only are we harvesting but we are replanting our gardens for a fall season harvest. So come out and get your hands dirty for a great cause!

You can help us surpass our goal and really reap in the bounty for our seniors. If you would like to volunteer on a weekly basis to help take care of the garden, we would love to talk to you. With your help we will exceed our goal of 1000 lbs of fresh produce delivered. If not this season take some time this next couple of months to think about planting a garden for us next spring. We will even supply you with some seeds!

Sharing the Harvest Program Keeps Growing

Stocking Tree Br ings the Joy of Giv ing

With the chill of fall in the air, we are reminded once again of the annual event our meal participants dearly looke forward to, the Stockings for Seniors program and the MMOW Stocking Tree on display at Sadie’s Upscale Consignment & Resale.

As early as October, elves busy themselves contacting MMOW’s home-delivery participants to determine their wish lists. Then, on Saturday, November 5th, Santa lights

who participate in the workplace, and civic groups that embrace our seniors . . . all are touched in special ways. Contact Amy at 817-491-1141 to see how you can take part.

Teachers and students at Timberline are

planting their first garden. Hopefully our fall

gardens will be as successful as the summer

gardens.

2012 Fashion Show & Shopping Bazaar

Sadie’s Fal l Outlook

2012 Fashion Show & Shopping Bazaar

and LINK Award Presentation benefitting

Metroport Meals On Wheels Friday, October 12th

Fall fashions arrive daily at Sadie’s providing their ensembles for the runway, including elegant and trendy fashions from Doncaster, Brooks Brothers, David Hunt Furs, Brides & Beaux and Sadie’s Upscale Consignment & Resale coordinated by fashion team of Candy Miller, Debbie Felps, Colleen White and Sadie’s staff.

Runway models — whose looks will be perfected by hairstylist Isabel Sidwell, owner of Isabella’s Exclusive Salon — will include area officials, spouses, and philanthropic group members.

The luncheon will offer an exciting live auction with travel and dining experiences, items for the sports enthusiasts and fashion “must haves.”

Fall has finally come and we’re ready to put the summer’s heat behind us. With cooler temperatures we can begin to envision new wardrobe pieces and color changes. Some of the new looks you’ll see this season are various tweeds, lots of jackets, and a more masculine effect. And don’t forget hats, they will complete your ensemble.Grays, browns, and neutral colors

The shopping bazaar will spotlight unique vendors from throughout the Metroplex with fashionable accessories, jewelry, sports memorabilia, “one of a kind” collectibles, home décor and more.

Established three years ago, MMOW’s LINK Award honors an outstanding leader. The LINK Award, which symbolizes Leadership, Inspiration, Nurture, and Kindness, is presented to a leader whose legacy to the community includes these characteristics. The recipient of the 2012 LINK Award, Laura K. Hill, will receive the award at the luncheon.

Please join us for this great event! All proceeds go towards feeding our local seniors. For ticket and table information, contact the office at 817.491.1141 or visit our website at www.metroportmow.org

“A special thanks goes out to the Auction Committee and all the volunteers who organize, attend fittings, and set aside time in their day to make the 2012 Fall Fashion Show & Shopping Bazaar a success for Metroport Meals On Wheels and our seniors. You all are priceless!”
