The Future of a HealthStudies Student: Programs toConsiderOne benefit to being in suchas broad and multidisciplinaryprogram such as HealthStudies is that there areendless options of excitingcareer paths to pursue. If youwant a career where you canenable people to increasetheir health and quality of life, health promotion may be thepath for you. Health Promotioninvolves prevention andintervention to reduce healthrisks.

A common means of healthpromotion is through publicpolicy addressing the socialdeterminants of health suchas income, housing, transportation andemployment. Some sub-specializations of healthpromotion include educationon alcohol, nutrition, stressmanagement, sexual health, healthy lifestyle, and chronicdisease prevention.

Graduate programs in HealthPromotion have beenreplaced by Schools of PublicHealth, with an increasedfocus on epidemiology, policyand health sciences. TheMasters in Public HealthProgram is a HealthPromotion graduate program

in the field of Social andBehavioural Health Sciencesthat prepares graduates forcareers in government andcommunity health agencies.

The program, or one similar toit, is offered at a number ofschools across Canada, including the University ofToronto, University of Alberta,Dalhousie University, andWestern. The programincorporates both healthpromotion and public healthstrategies such as healtheducation, communitydevelopment, and healthadvocacy. This program willenable students to contributeas researchers andpractitioners to assess needsand implement and evaluatethe impact of health promotionstrategies.

If you want to take more of atreatment approach in yourfuture career, OccupationalTherapy (OT) may be the pathfor you. OT uses assessmentand treatment to assist peopleto develop, recover, ormaintain daily life and workskills. They work closely withclients who have a physical, mental, or cognitive disorderto achieve goals andparticipate in activitiesmeaningful to the client.

OT is a very competitiveprogram offered at a numberof schools across Canadaincluding the University ofAlberta, University of Ottawa,McMaster University, andWestern. Within theprofession there is the optionto pursue a Masters inOccupational Therapy, whichtakes a therapeutic andhands-on approach or aMasters and PhD inOccupational Science, whichtakes more of a researchapproach. Students in theMasters OT program will beinvolved in fieldwork wherethey will directly work withclients using strategies suchas eliminating barriers in theenvironment, modifyingactivities, facilitatingindependence, and enablingparticipation in daily activities.

These are just two of thenumerous options for careersto pursue in the field of healthcare. It is important to getstarted early looking into all ofthe potential options for furthereducation so that you cantailor your undergraduatedegree to your interests andrequired courses. The optionswith a Health Studies degreeare limitless and ultimately, you are responsible forchoosing the path mostmeaningful to you.

I’m astonished that it’s alreadybeen a year since I was electedthe Health Studies President forour amazing School of HealthStudies. When I first came intothe position, I was supernervous and excited to bring myideas to life. I am so proud ofwhat HSSA has been able toaccomplish. To begin- werebranded from the HealthStudies Students’ Council to theHealth Studies Students’Association – identifyingourselves with a new colour, new website and a new logo. Itsdefinitely been successful ingetting our name out there aswe’ve increased our followerson social media and I’ve heardour name mentioned in briefconversations when I walkedaround campus (not to becreepy). Its been an exhilarating

experience and we’ve been ableto produce exciting initiatives’that I hope will become atradition in our program. Forexample, the Health CareChallenge was aninterdisciplinary competition tochallenge undergraduatestudents to be innovate andthink outside the box. We alsodeveloped the “Golden AppleAwards” to recognize HSstudents not only in academicexcellence but in healthbehaviour and advocacy. We’vealso been working closely withthe SHS office and the FHSDean’s office to increase studyhours in the building andprovide concerns and feedbackin academics. There were manyups and downs, challenges andbarriers that HSSA had toovercome behind the scenes

but with the help of my amazing,hard-working members, wewere able to engage HSstudents in ways we’ve neverimagined. I am super excited tobe your president again for nextyear and I am very interested inhearing feedback from YOU-the students that are receivingthe programming we have beenhosting. If you haven’t seen thefeedback email we’ve sent out-please don’t hesitate to [email protected] withany ideas, concerns, orcomments about HSSA’sperformance for the year. Forthose of you who aregraduating- CONGRATS! Forthe rest of the student body-Have a safe, healthy, funsummer and I’ll see in you inSeptember!
