Program NoteComposed in 1967 by Ariel Ramírez (1921 – 2010),

the Misa Criolla (Creole Mass) combines European influ-ences with South American folk traditions . In his early twenties, Ramírez wandered through parts of South America playing piano and studying indigenous musical traditions . After studying music in Madrid and Vienna and teaching at a convent in Germany, he returned to his native Argentina to complete studies in Buenos Aires . It is here that he composed the Misa Criolla, one of the first major Mass compositions in a vernacular

language as mandated by the Second Vatican Council . Ramírez is quoted as saying that he intended to write a Mass that “refers to man, to his dignity, his courage, to freedom… and to his relationship with God the Creator .” Misa Criolla was prompted by his conversation with two German nuns who had secretly brought food to Jews confined in a concentration camp during World War II. Inspired by this act of courage, Ramírez wrote his “Folk Mass” for all peoples of the world, celebrating their common humanity .

The guelPh Male Choir was founded in 1997 by two men with a love for male choirs in the Welsh tradition . Since then, men of all ages and stages of life meet to rehearse every Wednesday, 7:30pm at Westminster-St . Paul’s Presbyterian Church from the beginning of September until early May . Each evening session is two hours of enjoyable vocal and choral training while pre-paring for two annual concerts given in December and May . The revenue generated from these public appear-ances provides support to UNICEF and the Kiwanis Music Festival of Guelph . Members pay a modest mem-bership fee for each of the two semesters—September to early December and January to early May—which helps defray expenses and allows the organisation to loan each singer a full set of music, a music folder and a tuxedo for performances . The men of the Guelph Male Choir enjoy exploring repertoire that spans all styles and genres, from Broadway to Bach, folksongs to gospel songs, unison to four parts .

Gordon Adnams has been involved in music education and leadership, as well as profes-sional music-making throughout his adult life . He earned both MusBac and MusM degrees from the University of Toronto and a PhD from the University of Alberta . Gordon served as Minister of Music at Forward Baptist Church in Toronto and Ellerslie Road Baptist Church in Edmonton, forming and leading adult and youth choirs . As Associate Professor and co-chair of the Music Department at Taylor University College in Edmonton, Gordon taught choral conducting, and directed the choirs and vocal ensembles . Currently, Dr . Adnams teaches at Redeemer University College in Ancaster, coordinates worship at MacNeill Baptist Church in Hamilton, conducts Strata Vocal Ensemble (Hamilton) as well as the Guelph Male Choir, and serves on the board of the Summer Institute of Church Music .
