Introduction

Frants Vilhelm 810m 1879-1970

This is an effort by David Carl Bloom (grandson of Frants ViIhelm Blom) to trace the Blom family roots back in time as

:=:--:£_far as possible. So far I have traced our branch of the Blom family to the year 1713 in Sweden. Frants Vilhelm Blom is a direct descendant of Carl Jacobsson Blom, born 1713, 19 years before the birth of George Washington. His place of birth is still unknown but the earliest record found for him is in the church records of Visnum Parish in Varmland, Sweden in 1743 when he married Catharina Asmundsdotter. He is then found in many later church records in Visnum Parish and AIster Parish. He was a Smedmastare (Master Blacksmith) at Jonsbols bruk and Backhammar in Visnum Parish, later moving to Forsnas bruk in Alster Parish. There will be more about bruks and blacksmiths in following sections.

The search started with Frants Vilhelm in Norway using the internet to view and copy Norwegian church records, Norwe

gian census records, and emigration records working backward in time. The records showed that both Frants Vilhelm's father's family and mother's family immigrated to Norway from Sweden. Both families came from Varmland and were from parishes close to one another. However, I have found no evidence that the families knew each other while living in Sweden. For the research in Sweden I used Swedish church records almost exclusively due to the great amount of information contained in those records. For Norway I used Norwegian church records and Norwegian census records. There is more about Norwegian and Swedish church records in a following section. You will also 'find herein various genealogy reports and family trees shoWing Blom descendants, and ancestors in different ways.

Names of individuals in these reports are spelled exactly as they were recorded in their birth records whenever birth records were found. Surnames were very rare in Sweden until the 17th century. In the time period researched for the Blom family in Sweden (18th and 19th centuries), I found that surnames were still rare. At that time the patronymic system was still customary in rural areas. In towns and cities surnames were often adopted by nobility and clergy. Others used place of origin as a surname and other surnames were derived from a trade, profession, product or tool. Our family had the surname Blom and we often wondered what the origin of the Blom name was, since it didn't seem to be associated with a skill or trade.

Research revealed that the Blom surname is of 7th century Anglo-Saxon origin. It is an occupational name for maker of blooms, a type of worker in the industry of making iron. It was derived from the Olde English pre 7th Century "bloma" (Middle English "blome"), ingot of iron. He would have worked in what was called a bloomery. Bloomery is the name of an ancient process, or place, for making wrought iron. Charcoal and limestone would ~e

2

used in the masugn (smelting furnace) to separate the iron from ore. The iron and slag, being heavier, would settle in the bottom of the furnace. Then, while the mass was still spongy and white hot but not yet liquid, it was pulled out of the bottom of the smelting furnace. This glowing mass was called a "bloom". The bloom was immediately put on a smalthammare (a very large water powered hammer) where a hammarsmed (blacksmith working at a large powered hammer) would begin to hammer it to a solid mass. Hot slag would shoot out all over the place. It would take several re-heatings in the forge and much more hammering to beat out all of the slag and carbon and would make the mass nearly pure iron. This was how iron was originally made and refined and was called wrought iron. These ingots (blooms), now nearly pure iron would eventually be moved to the hammarsmedja where hammarsmeds would reheat them until white hot and then, by hammering on a large power hammer, form them into the final product, which was iron bars. The hammarsmedja might be located some distance from the masugn. There will be more about hammarsmeds and the hammarsmedja in a following section.

The Blom surname now seems to make sense considering the fact that all of our Blom ancestors and their male relatives worked in the industrial process of making iron. It may be that further back in our 810m history, one or more of our ancestors worked at the smalthammare in a bloomery.

You will notice that some family branches are short and have not been traced back very far. That is because this is a continuous work in progress that I will add to as time permits. Any family member who reads this and is interested in pushing any branch further back in time can contact me and I will be glad to help you get started and would appreciate it if you would forward whatever you find so that together we can keep this tree growing.

There are several software programs that you can use to enter data and generate your reports and trees. I use Family Treemaker. My e-mail [email protected].

The Norwegian Church Records

The Norwegian church records were used extensively for tracing the Blom family roots. They go back many centuries. Records of births, christenings, confirmations, marriages, and

deaths are found there. Also used were records from several censuses.

A large part of the Norwegian Church records plus certain types of civil records have been photographed or transcribed and are available for viewing on the internet at http://digitalarkivet.uib.nol as a free public service courtesy of the National Archives of Norway.

Gamle Aker Kirke Akersbakken 26, Geitmyrsveien 70, 0172 Oslo

Here was recorded the marriage of Kristian Kristensen and Britta Nilsdotter who were the parents of Alma, Marie, Fred, and Simen.

This medieval church is the oldest existing building in Oslo and is Scandinavia's oldest stone church. It was built by King Olav Kyrre in 1080. The pulpit and baptismal font are dated to 1715. It is still an active parish and a favorite place for concerts because of its excellent acoustics.

Vestre Aker Kirke Ullevalsveien 117, Oslo

Recorded In this church were the birth record for Marie Stine Blom (daughter of Knut & Maria Blom) and the death records for Knut Ericsson Blom and wife Maria Jansdotter (parents of Carl Knutsson Blom). They died one day apart and were buried in same grave.

Also recorded here, was the marriage record for Carl Knutsson Blom and Elizabet Johannesdatter.

And recorded here were the birth and baptism records for Frants Vilhelm Blom (AKA William Bloom Sr.) and his siblings Eugenie Blom, Son Blom (died same day he was born), Ragnvald Blom (AKA John Bloom), Magda Blom, and the Birth/baptism and death records for Ruth Clara Blom who drowned in the Glomma River when she was four years old.

In 1861 the original municipality of Aker was divided into Vestre Aker and 0stre Aker. This is the Vestre Aker Parish church. Other subdivisions of Aker were Ullern and Nordstrand in1906. In 1948 the area was incorporated into the city of Oslo.

Vestre Aker Church was built of built of brick in 1855 and can seat 500. The baptismal font is made of sandstone and dates from 1855. The pipe organ is an Eriksen and Svendsen 1860.

The Swedish Church Records

The Swedish church records have been the most valuable source for tracing the Blom family /" roots. The records also go back many centuries. The Swedish Lutheran Church was the state

church of Sweden and since 1686 parish priests were required by the government to keep meticulous records of births, christenings, confirmations, marriages, and deaths. Additionally, the church did an annual examination of each household recording all individuals in the household, the individual's title, position in the household, year of birth, in what parish they were born, and what parish they moved in from or moved out to and what year. They were also examined by the priest on their degree of literacy and understanding of the Scriptures and catechism. Every Swedish baby born automatically became a member of the Swedish Lutheran Church.

Nearly all of the Swedish Church records have been photographed and are available for viewing on the internet at Genline.com by paying a subscription fee for any of several specific time periods from 24 hrs to one year.

Thus far, all Blom ancestors in Sweden were found in Varmland. Here are some of the churches where Bloms were members.

The Bruks

When you examine the following genealogy reports you will notice that the Blom ancestors in Sweden lived in

and worked in bruks. In Sweden a bruk was a community centered around an industry. Most of them were iron manufacturing ironworks called jambruk. They were located near iron ore deposits found in the deep forests in many places. All

.. of our Blom ancestors in Sweden worked in iron manufacturing bruks in river inlets around the north end of lake Vanern for generation after generation.

Iron manufacturing bruks were located in nearly idyllic forested areas next to a stream large enough to provide water power. Water power was essential for the iron making proc-

Borgviks bruk ca 1865 ess. The ironworks crushed and smelted ore that was mined locally. Charcoal was made from wood cut from the surround

ing forests and was used to roast the ore, fire the masugn (blast furnace), and the iron working forges. Water from the river was directed in wooden sluices from a dam to the iron works and turned large water wheels that powered the ore crusher, bellows for the blast furnace, bellows for the forging hearths, and the heavy industrial hammers.

Bruks were modern, nearly self contained communities consisting of attractive cottages where the workers lived, farms where crops and animals were grown for food, and shops such as cobblers and others. A bruk would also contain a grain mill and a sawmill also powered by water wheels. Originally a bruk was headed by a patriarch called a brukspatron, later called a disponent. Iron making rights were granted by the Swedish government, usually to people who were already noblemen. These ironmasters often purchased other farms in the surrounding area to help support the bruk. Forest grazing and patches of farmable land were allocated to bruk employees.

The hammarsmedja: This is the area of the bruks where our Blom ancestors were always found. The hammarsmedja is where iron ingots (blooms) were reheated in hearths called rackhard until white hot, then hammered into iron bars on a rackhammare, a heavy mechanical hammer powered by a large water wheel. It would strike about 50 blows per minute.

Each piece would be reheated as many times as necessary to hammer out the final bar product. The resulting product called stangjam (iron bars about three meters long), would then be sold and used somewhere else to manufacture various products made of iron. Some of these ancient hammers were still in use in the 1920s. Hammarsmed at Rackhammare 18th century

A man who worked at the heavy hammers was called a hammarsmed. All of the Blom men were hammarsmeds and would have been found working at the heavy water powered hammers. Generations of Blom men worked in several of these iron manufacturing bruks located in various river inlets on the north end of Lake Vanern, the largest lake in Sweden.

This is how iron bar stock was made for centuries, until rolling mills came into being during the last half of the 19th century. Swedish iron was of very high quality and many thousands of tons of it were exported to other countries, especially to Holland, England and Africa, During the 17th and 18th centuries iron bar amounted to around 75% of total Swedish exports.

Forsnas bruk stangjarnsmedja

Above is a sketch of the stangjarnsmedja at Forsnas bruk in Alster Parish as it probably looked ca 1860. It was drawn by Per Lindroce in 1962. The large building in the center is the stangjarnsmedja. Two water wheels are visible on the side. One would drive the bellows on the forges, the other drives the hammer. Smoke coming from the chimney is from the rackhards where the iron was heated before hammering.

The smaller building in the center is a sawmill. Piles of logs and lumber can be seen in the yard near it.

The building in the right foreground is a grain mill. A couple of millstones are on the ground in front of the building.

The small building with the chimney in the background is a cottage typical of where a family lived in the bruk. Possibly the miller lived there.

The two buildings in the upper left are sheds where charcoal for the rackhards was stored.

The road in the middle is on top of the dam. Damming the river was necessary to develop a head of water high enough to turn the water wheels. Also visible are the wooden sluices that direct water to the water wheels.

Bloms who worked at Forsnas bruk at one time or another are Carl Jacobsson 810m, Erik Carlsson 810m, Carl Carlsson Blom, Johannes

- Carlsson 810m, and Anders Carlsson Blom. -

The Blacksmiths

In the Swedish blacksmithing trade all had to belong to the guild. Sons of blacksmiths had precedence over all others to enter apprenticeship in the trade and membership in the guild. Knowing that they would

be much better off and enjoy higher social status than unskilled workers, nearly all sons followed in their father's footsteps. You will see this in the Blom lineage when you examine a following genealogy report titled The Descendants Of Carl Jacobsson Blom where all of the male descendants entered the blacksmith trade, most of whom attained the rank of Mastare (Master). There were several ranks of workers in the blacksmith trade. Here are the different levels starting with the most senior:

Smedmastare Master blacksmith, tested and approved by the guild. Mastersven A master smith's assistant. Smeddrang Smith's helper, lesser in rank than a mastersven. Smedgesall Journeyman blacksmith, tested and approved by the guild. Smedlarling Blacksmith apprentice.

Blacksmiths and other highly skilled employees at the bruk were better off and enjoyed a much higher status and privilege compared to other workers and farmers. For example:

• A Mastare was entitled to a cottage with a bedroom, a kitchen and a cattle shed. He was also entitled to free feed for two cows.

• A Mastersven and married forge hands were entitled to a room, a kitchen and a cattle shed plus free feed for one cow.

Feed was in the form of pasture rights and a certain amount of meadow for haymaking, or a cash allowance for fodder. Forest grazing and patches of farmable land were also allocated to bruk employees

In Sweden, during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, the making of iron bar stock was the work of highly skilled smiths. They had much to say about who they would work with and the pace of the work. So quite often crews would organize along family lines. In the hammarsmedja work went on at the forges around the clock during the work week which typically was from Sunday evening to Saturday morning. There would be as many as ten men divided into two crews under the charge of a master hammarsmed. Once a man became a journeyman, it was customary for him to move around to other bruks and learn as much as he could so he could advance to the next level. Testing by the guild was required before advancement to journeyman and master. Most did not marry until after completing their journeyman years and attaining the next rank. Also, many were content not to become a master. Masters were supervisors who ran a crew or a whole shop.

Iron bars were later made from ingots of iron that had been refined using a newer process called the Lancashire method. This greatly reduced the impurities in the iron such as silica and carbon but still required some hammering on the smalthammare. The ingots came to the hammarsmedja from the bloomery and were called tackjarn or blooms and weighed about 30-40 kilos (66-88 pounds). In the smithy the blooms would be put in an oven called a rackhard and heated to white hot and then quickly put on a stangarnshammare, a large mechanical hammer for production of stangarn (iron bars). As hammering progressed, the piece would cool and have to be reheated several times before a bar was completely formed. It is logical to assume that there would be several pieces in various stages of hammering moving between the rackhard and the hammer so that the hammer would rarely be idle.

At the stangjarnsmedja smiths normally stayed at the workplace all week. There would be a small labbi (house) or smekuja (room) where they ate their meals and rested. This house or room was very spartan, having only a place to eat and a place to sleep made of nailed up boards with loose rye straw for bedding. Usually there were no windows but it would have a stove that burned coal and was started with embers taken from the forging hearth in the smithy. .

12

It was the custom for blacksmiths to stay at the smithy the whole work week. It was hot, sweaty, dirty, noisy work. Their clothes and bodies would become filthy from grime, soot, and sweat. Salt from the sweat would actually encrust their skin and clothes. There were no facilities for bathing and changing into clean clothes. In the labbi or smekuja, the atmosphere was a mixture of sweaty feet, sweaty skin, and salty sweaty clothes. It was also necessary for them to use their spare time to get proper rest because the work was very hard. So in the st~mgjarnsmdja, the blacksmith was entirely separated from his family for the entire work week.

The work was hard on the men's bodies. It wasn't unusual at forty years of age to have a crooked back, and at fifty to also be deaf and occasionally have a maimed limb.

This would seem to be an extremely grueling routine for smiths to endure all year, year in year out. However, the furnaces, forges, and hammers required lots of water power to operate, so operation was mostly limited to spring and summer when the water was high in the streams. The smiths then could do other work and tend to their farming.

The hauling of charcoal pig iron and bar iron was done in the winter over frozen ground and lakes on sledges.

Upon retirement, the smed and his wife or widow were provided with housing, some arable land and meadow.

A smith could not leave without his employers permission, nor could he ask for an increase in wages. Apparently permission to leave wasn't that hard to get. You will see in the section titled The Descendants of Carl Jacobsson Blom that they all seemed to be able to quite freely move around from one bruk to another.

13

The Emigrants to Norway In 1857 Knut Ericsson Blom that brought our branch of the Blom family to Norway. Before that he had a history of often moving from one bruk to another in different parishes and at least two times moving back to a bruk where he had worked before.

What the conditions were that caused Knut to take his family out of Sweden are unknown. The church records in Gunnarskog and Boda parishes show that a small child of Knut and Maria died in 1855 and another in 1856. The Boda Parish Household Examination record for 1856-1860 show Knut age 41, and family emigrating with destination as Mariesdal Hammar, Norge, 1857. With him were his wife Maria age 38, son Eric Gustav age 15, son Frants Edvard age 13, daughter Anna Catharina age 10, and son Carl age 1.

In Norway the church records do not include an annual household examination as was done in Sweden, so it is not quite as easy to find where people were. Censuses were infrequent and not all inclusive. The 1666 census counted only men and boys and some widows. There are also missing parishes. The same is true of the 1701 census. The 1768 census counted men and women but not all children. The 1801 census is considered to be the first real census.

The 1865 census: This is the first Norwegian census after the Blom immigration in 1857 and is a very good census. In Municipality number 0218 Vestre Aker we find Knut age 50, and his family living in Maridalen school district at Svingen place. Knut's occupation is recorded as Hammersmed. With him are his wife Maria age 47, daughter Anna Catharina age 18, son Carl Knutsson age 10 and daughter Marie Stine age 7. Marie Stine was born 1859 in Aker (In 1861 the municipality of Aker was divided into Vestre Aker and QJstre Aker) Knut is also recorded to have three cows, four sheep, and is growing some wheat, barley, and potatoes.

In a nearby household, at Steensrud place, is Hammersmed Peter Janson and his family, also his son-inlaw Eric Gustav Knutsson Blom, occupation Krutarbeider (Gunpowder Worker), age 24, married to Peter's daughter Nicoline age 22, plus Eric and Nicoline's daughter Alette Mathilda age 1.

Also in Vestre Aker is Snedkermester (Master Cabinet Maker/Joiner) Carl Blom age 46 and family, also born in Sweden. He has not been found in our branch of the Blom family but may be connected several generations back.

The 1875 census: This census is also on the internet, but does not show Municipality number 0218 Vestre Aker.

The 1900 census: Here we find Municipality number 0218 Vestre Aker again. Knut and Maria both died in 1890 so are not here. Knut's son Carl Blom is found in Vestre Aker as head of household and living with him are sons Frants Vilhelm (listed as Vilhelm), and Ragnvald. Carl's occupation is listed as Arbieder v/ Spigerverk (Worker at nailworks). Frants Vilhelm's occupation is listed as Smed v/spigerverk (Blacksmith at nailworks). Ragnvald's occupation is also listed as worker with nailworks. Their address is listed as Guldhoug nedre, H. Eriksens hus.

Carl's wife Elisabet is not found with Carl. She is found in 0419 Sl2mdre Odalen as head of household in Skarnes QJdegaarden. With her were daughters Magda and Ruth Klara.

Daughter Eugenie is in 0301 Kristiania living in the household of restaurant owner Sigurd Hanson and his wife. Her occupation is listed as Wait Girl, what we would call waitress. Several other wait girls and kitchen girls are also living there.

Carl's brother Eric Gustav Knutsson Blom and wife Nikoline are also still in 0218 Vestre Aker. He is recorded as owning his house and his occupation is listed as Vognmand (CabmanlWagoner).

14

The Nail Factory

When Knut Eriksson Blom and family left Varmland for Norway in 1857, the Gunnarskog Parish church record noted his destination as Mariesdal Hammar, Norge. As of this writing, I have been

unable to find any information about a Mariesdal Hammar. The 1865 Norwegian census records Knut's occupation as Hammersmed but this census does not record place of employment for individuals.

The 1900 census finds Knut's son Carl and his sons Vilhelm and Ragnvald working at the spigerverk (nail factory). Research revealed that the spigerverk is what is known as the Christiania Spigerverks in Nydalen which started production in 1853. In 1900 Nydalen was not part of Christiania, (spelled Kristiania at that time).

This is a photo of Christiania Spigerverks in 1925 and is probablyChristiania Spigerverks ca 1860 very much like it looked in 1900.

The Christiania Spigerverks is still in existence and still in Nydalen. It makes nails and screws of all types, plus miscellaneous fastening plates used in construction.
